Happy Thanksgiving, Sorors! Thanksgiving is a day that we all look forward to for the food, fellowship and football. The Webster Dictionary defines Thanksgiving as the act of giving thanks, a prayer expressing gratitude, or a public acknowledgement or celebration of divine goodness. During this season of Thanksgiving, take a moment to give thanks to all of the wonderful things that God has done for you over the last year and will continue to do for you. At the November 6, 2010 general body meeting, we will elect the new leadership for Zeta Chi Omega and vote on our 2011 dues and assess-ments. Voting will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. during the general body meeting. The election results will be given prior to the end of the meeting. All 2011 chapter dues and assessments are due by December 31, 2010. Per capita and EAF are submitted to the Corporate Office by an online mass payment system that requires both the Basileus and Tamiouchos to input the data. I encourage all sorors to pay their 2011 dues at the December general body meeting to ensure that you have uninterrupted service. As a reminder, membership cards are valid from Janu-ary 1, 2010 until December 31, 2010. The Pecunious Grammateus report will have a detailed timeline for submission of chapter dues. The Tamiouchos and I will submit the last mass payment of 2010 for 2011 per capita and EAF on December 20, 2010. The next payment for 2011 will be submitted after the New Year due to the Christmas holiday. All officers and committee chairmen are reminded to submit their end of the year reports to the Basileus and Grammateus by November 15, 2010. All end of the year reports will be posted in the Members Only section of the chapter’s website in December. If you do not have inter-net access and desire a copy of a report, please contact Soror Vanessa Jackson. Registration is available online for the 2011 National Founders’ Day, to take place on January 13-16, 2011 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Early regis-tration is $115 and will end on November 15, 2010. Late registration is $150 until December 15, 2010. The 2011 National Founders’ Day will honor our Founders, along with paying tribute to the “Little Rock Nine.” More information can be found in the fall edition of the Ivy Leaf. The December general body meeting will take place on December 4, 2010, at the Fort Myer Officers’ Club in Arlington, Virginia. There will be an abbreviated meeting, with installation of officers immediately following the end of the meeting. At the conclusion of the installation of officers, a holiday luncheon will take place. All chapter members are invited to attend but must RSVP by November 12, 2010 to Soror Tiffany Montgomery. If you invite a guest to the meeting, please RSVP for your guest and remit payment for your guest’s meal. Sorors, don’t forget to get your ticket for the 52nd Annual Cooley-Moore Scholarship Luncheon Fashion Show — and bring a friend. Remem-ber, all monies raised from this event benefit our scholarship recipients. This event needs the support of the chapter members to ensure its success. Yours in Service, Soror Michelle M. Jones

The program theme of our Supreme Basileus, Soror Carolyn House Stewart, is “Global Leadership Through Timeless Service.” Our new Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Soror Linda Gilliam, states that “our overarching mission and renewed vision will require every Alpha Kappa Alpha woman to work SMART: Strategic, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Transferable.” We must all remember that in order to be successful in the mission of our Supreme Basileus using the attributes stated by our Mid-Atlantic Director, we must first be on the same page as and using the plan that God has given us. If we do, we will accomplish this goal. His plan is always perfect, so our success will always be guaranteed. In order to know what God’s plan is for us, we must be SMART, but in another way:

S.M.A.R.T Seek God first – Find some quality time every day to spiritually connect. He is available 24/7. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:32-34 Move as He has instructed you to – Listen to what God has planned for you. But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be My people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you. Jeremiah 7:22-24 Acknowledge Him – Realize that the supernatural work that you have achieved was done because of the supernatural source. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-7 Respond appropriately – Give Him your thanks and praise. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name. Psalm 100:3-5 Tell others about His promises and his faithfulness -But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do his work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted. 1 Peter 2:8-10 Yes, as we go forth with new officers, with a new mission, with new tools and with some soon-to-be new chapter officers of this chap-ter, let us remember to be SMART in the only way that counts – God’s way! Let your good idea be a God idea. Success is then as-sured!! Submitted by Soror Pat Wallace Chairman Spirit and Inspiration Committee

Officers’ Reports Anti-Basileus

CALLING ALL SORORS!! As a part of our Supreme Basileus’ Emerging Young Leaders (EYL) initiative, Zeta Chi Omega continues to work with young ladies at the Charles Houston Recreation Center with the STEPOUT program. Project STEPOUT is a program that provides young girls with informa-tion and skills to take control of their lives in a responsible manner in order to become productive citizens. Zeta Chi Omega has been involved in this program for over 20 years and has seen many of the young ladies finish high school and college and take their place in society as productive citizens. Our sessions are conducted on the second and fourth Tuesdays, October through June at 5:00 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center. The goal is to provide activities and information about health, career goals, financial literacy, Afri-can American heritage, and other topics that may be of interest to the participants. We need your help in providing your expertise in any of the areas mentioned above. Many of you have responded, and we appreciate your help in the past and welcome your continued involvement in the lives of the Emerging Young Leaders of the future. The first session of this year took place on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, and two of our members, Sorors Robin Mazyck and Jessica Sims, presented on their positions in television media. For additional information about ways you can assist, please contact Sorors Joyce Hen-derson, Louise Gordon, Regina Crawley, or Doris Shannon. We promise that you will be uplifted by your involvement with these young ladies. PLEASE GET INVOLVED!! Soror Doris Shannon Anti-Basileus

Sorors are reminded to submit vouchers within thirty (30) days of an event, unless there are extenuating circumstances. After 30 days, vouchers may not be honored. Officers’ Reports (continued)

Sorors, My how time flies….the holiday season is upon us! In advance preparation of holiday vacation schedules, I submit the following to assist you with the planning of paying your 2011 dues and assessments, which are due and payable by December 31. Keep in mind that you are most welcome to submit partial dues payments at any time prior to that date. I am happy to receipt your dues payments at the November and December chapter meetings. For those who plan to submit to the chap-ter PO Box, the payment must be postmarked by December 15, 2010 in order for it to be processed prior to December 31. The per Capita and EAF portion of your dues payments are electronically submitted to Corporate Office via a process called “mass pay-ment.” The Basileus and the Tamiouchos are the only two officers authorized to affect this process. The final mass payment for 2010 will take place on December 20, 2010. As a result, I will need to have receipted and submitted to the Tamiouchos all dues payments prior to that date for those who wish to meet the end of year timeline. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about this or any other sorority-related financial matter.

Toiletry Collection for Carpenter's Shelter

Platform V, Health Resources Management, is facilitating a Zeta Chi Omega community service activity to support the Carpenter's Shelter in Alexandria. The committee will collect travel-sized toiletries from sorors at each MONTHLY chapter meeting and deliver them to the shelter as a community service activity. This no-cost activity also supports "Section B. Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability " of the Health Initiatives 2010-2014 Signature Program Initiatives by encouraging conservation and support to women with limited resources.

Carpenter's Shelter ( http://www.carpentersshelter.org/ ) is dedicated to ending homelessness through services, education and advocacy. It is located at 930 North Henry Street, Alexandria, Virginia.

Health Initiatives ~ These initiatives encourage personal fitness and healthy life styles. November is American Diabetes MonthNovember is American Diabetes Month

Pre-Diabetes: Did You Know? Before people develop Type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "pre-diabetes"—blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. There are 57 million people in the United States who have pre-diabetes.

Health Initiatives ~ These initiatives encourage personal fitness and healthy life styles. We will support organizations which advance access to treatment and coordinate awareness and advocacy campaigns to reduce health disparities, save lives and impact health related legislation. The blood glucose levels measured after these tests determine whether you have a normal metabolism, or whether you have pre-diabetes or diabetes. If your blood glucose level is abnormal following the FPG, you have impaired fasting glucose (IFG); if your blood glu-cose level is abnormal following the OGTT, you have impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Both are also known as pre-diabetes.

Pre-diabetes is a serious medical condition that can be treated. Treatment consists of losing a modest amount

If your weight is normal and you're over age 45, you should ask your doctor during a routine office visit if testing is appropriate. For adults younger than 45 and overweight, your doctor may recommend testing if you have any other risk factors for diabetes or pre-diabetes. These include high blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides, a family history of diabetes, a history of gestational diabetes or giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds, or be-longing to an ethnic or minority group at high risk for diabetes.

There are three different tests your doctor can use to determine whether you have pre-diabetes: The A1C test The fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)

While diabetes and pre-diabetes occur in people of all ages and races, some groups have a higher risk for developing the disease than others. Diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Native Ameri-cans, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders, as well as the aged population. This means they are also at increased risk for developing pre-diabetes. If you are overweight and age 45 or older, you should be checked for prediabetes during your next routine medical office visit.

of weight (5-10 percent of total body weight) through diet and moderate exercise, such as walking, 30 min-utes a day, 5 days a week. Don't worry if you can't get to your ideal body weight. A loss of just 10 to 15 pounds can make a huge difference. If you have pre-diabetes, you are at a 50 percent increased risk for heart dis-ease or stroke, so your doctor may wish to treat or counsel you about cardiovascular risk factors, such as tobacco use, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Treatment of pre-diabetes can prevent the devel-opment of Type 2 diabetes.

Charter Member Soror Ophelia T. Pinkard

Something very special came out of Chicago – our very own Golden and Charter member, Soror Ophelia Braden Taylor Pinkard! Born to Georgia Taylor and Benjamin L. Taylor, soror Ophelia spent her infant years in Chicago and later spent an academic year and a summer engaged in graduate study at the University of Chicago in French and Spanish. Soror Ophelia attended Baltimore, MD Public Elementary schools and graduated from the high school department of Kittrell College in NC. She received her B.A. degree with a major in Romance Languages at Talladega College, AL, where she was an honor student and member of the college choir. It was also there where Soror Ophelia became a member of Chi Chap-ter in 1935. (Yes, Soror Ophelia is fast approaching her Diamond status!!!) She received her M.A. degree in educa-tion at Howard University. She has done further study in Library Science at Catholic University, and has studied at Co-lumbia University under a John Hay Fellowship in the Humanities. Under scholarship from the Arlington County School Board, she was part of a reading clinic at Howard, and she attended a summer NDEA Institute in French at Bucknell Uni-versity.

Soror Ophelia is happily married to John H. Pinkard, Jr., a retired physicist, and they have shared many common interests throughout their enduring marriage - to include travel, photography, drama, stamp-collecting, and music (she at the piano and he with the violin). Soror Ophelia grew up in the church. In early life, she spent all day Sunday at church where her mother was a Sunday School teacher and her father was the superintendent. She was pianist for Sunday School, church service and other services. She is currently a member of Plymouth Congrega-tional Church of Christ in Washington, DC, where she has served in various capacities on various committees and boards. Noteworthy is that she served as the church’s first archivist. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, and a charter member of Zeta Chi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she served in several offices, to include chapter Basileus. Sorors, it’s an honor to salute a very precious gem – Soror Ophelia T. Pinkard! Submitted by Soror Starr Garrett

“Strengthening our Sisterhood”

Retreat Reflection At the 2010 Retreat, Zeta Chi Omega sorors were challenged to come up with words that em-body the letters and the spirit of the word “sisterhood.” Sorors met and exceeded the chal-lenge by coming up with over 300 words. Each month we will feature new words in a Sister-hood Reflection. This month’s reflection is:

An Alpha Kappa Alpha woman is tender, she is humble, and she is dependable in her work and

play to provide service to all mankind. Precious Pearls Day Calling All Inactive Sorors - We are asking all sorors to bring at least one inactive soror to the November chap-ter meeting. We plan to welcome the sorors with open arms and a light continental breakfast. There will be a prize for the Zeta Chi Omega soror who brings the most sorors!

Holiday Party Get ready to put on your holiday cheer and celebrate the season with your sorors! The Membership Commit-tee is inviting you to join us for fun, food, and festivities. As you know, it is very important that we get an accurate count to the caterer. Please RSVP to [email protected] or 703-730-2075 by November 15.

November Movie Outing The Membership Committee would like invite you on a date after the November 6 general body meeting to see the new Tyler Perry Movie, For Colored Girls. Committee Reports (continued)

October was a busy month for the Connection Committee, and we would like to first thank all of the committee members and all sorors who contributed in any way to help make these events a success. Our next meeting will be on November 23, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. Location: TBD. All are welcome!

One Nation Working Together Rally On October 2, 2010, sorors participated in the One Nation Rally for jobs, justice and education. The Na-tional Pan-Hellenic Council partnered with over 150 progressive groups to address issues related to education, health care and the economy. In the words of our Supreme Basileus, this is part of the journey in our Global Leadership through Timeless Service initiatives.

2010 Political Forum: An Employed Northern Virginia In partnership with the Young Professionals Network of the Northern Virginia Urban League, the Connection Committee participated in the 2010 Political Forum on October 5th. CNN Political Analyst Jamal Simmons served as moderator for candidates seeking election for the House of Representatives within Virginia's 8th and 11th congressional districts. We also had the opportunity to personally thank Congress-man Connolly for submitting Zeta Chi Omega in the Congressional Record for work on Census 2010. Trick or Vote As a part of the NOVA Coalition, sorors participated in the Trick or Vote Campaign by first taking the pledge themselves during the October general body meeting. According to a 2001 Yale study, face-to-face interaction is the single best way to get someone to vote. The purpose of this initia-tive was to increase voter participation and awareness. We were responsible for asking resi-dents to sign pledge cards stating they will vote in the election. On October 30, the coalition held a party to collect all information and announce a winner. Trick or Vote is the nation’s largest get out the vote effort.

Sisterly, Sorors Margarette Peterson & Betty Morrison
