The Jack and Carla Weingarten Story By Beverly Garfunkel, Guest Reporter Jack and Carla Weingarten celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary this past month of August, 2016! They were childhood friends in Vienna, Austria, where the Klinger and Weingarten families were neighbors and friends. The rise of the Nazis and World War II saw Jack, at 17, emigrating to Palestine in 1935, and Carla excluded from school and witnessing Kristallnacht when her father was arrested and sent to Dachau. Carla was fluent in Hebrew and among those fortunate enough to be chosen to immigrate to Palestine in 1939. That was the last time Carla saw her family, who met their ends in concentration camps. Jack’s mother asked Carla to find Jack in Palestine to deliver a letter to him. Little did Carla know that two years later, Mrs. Weingarten would be her mother‐in‐law! Jack was in the British Army and visited Carla when possible. In 1941, they married after Jack was released from the British Army and joined the American Army ‐ OSS (Office of Strategic Service) ‐ until the end of the war. In Israel, Jack was an integral member of a large manufacturing company making cans and metal boxes. Together they raised two sons. In 1958, they decided to leave Israel and join Jack’s family in Oakland, later moving to Los Angeles. Here, Jack helped rescue a company in the fashion industry from bankruptcy and became its President. They lived in Mountaingate before settling at Fountainview in 2010. Jack and Carla are avid bridge players and enjoy their new life in our community. Ask anyone who has been around since the Weingartens moved in, and they will fondly remember Jack dressed up in full Island attire to hula at the first FV Labor Day luau, Carla enjoying all the dance classes offered as well as participating in every Walk of Ages event! A staff comment often overheard about these two, who still walk hand‐in‐hand after all these years: “They are so adorable together, they ought to be on the top of every wedding cake!” A well‐deserved compliment. Happy Anniversary, Jack and Carla! Saturday Night Live  ByEvelynBauer Not quite ready for prime time? I don’t think so. Here at Fountainview many of our entertainers are first rate. I’m thinking of the Andrews Sisters – oh wait – they were actually the “Swing Dolls” impersonating the Andrews Sisters. Three adorable ladies dressed in WWII army uniforms, right down to seams in their stockings, belted out “Rum and Coca Cola,” “The Boogy Woogy Bugle Boy,” “Bie Mer Bist de Shane,” etc. Thank you, Rabbi Tomsky, for bringing them to us. Then there was Tom Ogden with his unique combination of comedy and magic. His performance was a special Father’s Day treat and, although on a Sunday, it was a very special live performance. Bill Jones took us to Las Vegas for his 6th time at Fountainview. He was elegantly dressed, very professional, and an engaging crooner. It was as if we were at a show on the Strip, listening to Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Sammy Davis Jr. Outstanding is the adjective for the Dick Parent Trio. Piano, drums and a horn were combined to bring us our old favorite dance tunes. Some of our residents couldn’t resist and were on their feet dancing away. It was a nostalgic and very enjoyable performance. On a different note, classical pianist Michael Sellers returned for an impressive concert of Mozart, Schuman, and Beethoven. It was all first rate but the Gershwin pieces towards the end were particularly enjoyable. Saturday night does not have to be the loneliest night of the week. Come on down and join in on the fun. Thank you, Shelley and Lauri, for bringing us such great performers.
