Rabbi’s Message: Chanukah began Sunday, December 22, 2019. We lit the Chan-ukiah to help shed God’s light in the world and recall the Oil Mir-acle. The Chanukah menorah is a reminder of the religious free-

dom our ancestors, the Maccabees, fought for and won by military means against the Syrian-Greeks. During this dark time of the year, let us be among those who shed light. Let us shed the light of God’s teaching through the per-formance of God’s mitzvot — God’s commandments. One of the mitzvot is to remember. On Monday, December 23, we celebrated the 2nd night of Chanukah and screened a documentary about our congre-gant Sam Burke. In “The Little Dentist,” Sam shares some of his Holocaust ex-periences. Why remember? In order to learn, teach, celebrate and commem-orate. The word Chanukah means “dedication” and we must dedicate our-selves to remembering Holocaust survivors, learning and teaching the history, celebrating the miracle of Sam’s survival, and strengthening the Jewish people and the land of Israel. 75 of us gathered to see the “The Little Dentist.” It was a very powerful evening. We plan to screen additional films with Jewish and Israeli cultural themes. The beginning of December marked the conclusion of our 11th year making PB&J sandwiches. We have started year 12. Years ago, Peter Freimark posited the PB&J idea and we rolled up our sleeves and got started. We have made more than 100,000 sandwiches — 180 sandwiches each week for 572 weeks. We have helped countless Clevelanders who live on the streets. We do not know how many people have felt the ripple effects of our tzed-akah. We do not know their names. We know, only, that doing acts of Tzed-akah is part of the mission of Temple Israel Ner Tamid. As Jews, we are called to help God’s children — Jews and non-Jews alike. We have an abiding faith that the ripple effects warm the lives of others and fill us with warmth and satisfaction. Consider your life and the ripple effects of actions you have taken. And con-sider the ripple effects of things which have affected you. In Parashat Vayeshev — the Torah portion named Vayeshev — Genesis 37 — Jacob sent his favorite son, Joseph, to join his brothers as they pastured the flocks. Joseph got lost on the way … and then the Torah teaches, “A man dis-covered him, and behold, he was lost in the field. The man asked him, saying, ‘What do you seek?’ and he said, ‘My brothers do I seek … tell me please where they are pasturing.’ And the man said, ‘They have journeyed on from here, I heard them saying: let us go to Dothan.” So, Joseph went after his brothers and found them at Dothan.” — Had this unknown man not bumped into Joseph… he would not have been thrown into the pit and ultimately sold

Religion: It’s Good For Your Mental Health

In 1982 Bruce Springsteen released the album “Nebraska”. It was dark and depressing; songs about serial killers, death row prisoners, people down on their luck from the recessions of the seventies and early eighties comprised almost the entire album. But the last song — ah, that last song — “Reason To Believe”, always stuck with me. “At the end of every hard earned day, people find some reason to believe.”

It was a subject he dealt with often. In “Badlands”, “I believe in the faith that could save me.” In “The Promised Land”, “Gonna be a twister that blows everything down, that ain’t got the faith to stand it’s ground.”

You may ask yourself why am I rambling on about Bruce Springsteen songs in the synagogue’s newsletter. It’s because I read an article about children and faith in the Wall Street Journal. You see The Boss knows and sings about the great American value of faith, of belief in a higher power. And now…

A 2018 study in the American Journal of Epidemiology examined how being raised in a family with religious or spiritual beliefs affects mental health. Harvard researchers had examined religious involvement within a longitudinal data set of approximately 5,000 people, with controls for socio-demographic characteristics and maternal health.

The result? Children or teens who reported attending a religious service at least once per week scored higher on psychological well-being measurements and had lower risks of mental illness. Weekly attendance was associated with higher rates of volunteering, a sense of mission, forgiveness, and lower probabilities of drug use and early sexual initiation.*

Shalom

It is my hope that you had a meaningful and Joyous Celebration with your family and friends during the holiday of miracles and lights - Hanukkah.

At our last staff meeting I emphasized that we must remember to teach with Joy - not just about the Oy...

Some might come to believe wrongly that Judaism opposes happiness and favors worry, guilt and conflict. The media seem to be so down and obsessed with our problems: anti-Semitism, anti-Israel propaganda, assimilation, scandals and on and on. But actually, the opposite is true:

Judaism very much embraces the importance of happiness and joy!

The great Chassidic Rabbi Nachman famously taught that “It is great mitzvah to always be happy”. Yet, to be sure, happiness and joy alone cannot be our end point. History and current time events must be thought, explained and learned from.

In our world today, as anti-Semitic sentiment grows rampant amongst large and thriving groups all across the globe,

Temple Israel Ner Tamid Speaker Series

Nov. 5 was opening night of “The Band’s Visit” in Cleveland, yet the show’s producer was nowhere near Playhouse Square. In-

stead, Cleveland-native and Tony Award winner Orin Wolf graciously spent his evening at Temple Israel Ner Tamid in Mayfield Heights. As part of the Temple’s 10th annual Speaker Series, Wolf’s conversation with Rabbi Matt Eisenberg was enjoyed by a packed house filled with congregants, theater enthusiasts and his kvelling mom, Svetlana Schreiber, sitting front and center.

Topics discussed ranged from Wolf’s memories of performing in the Heights Youth Theatre at Wiley Junior High School to his determined pursuit of actor Tony Shalhoub to what to expect when watching, “The Band’s Visit.” “It’s not ‘CATS.’ It’s not a show that you sit back and let it wash over you. You have to listen,” Wolf said.

Presenting Wolf with a “Be a Mensch” baseball hat, Eisenberg said, "It is besheret. Our 10th speaker with 10 Tony Awards!”

Afterward, attendees mixed, mingled and discussed how lucky Cleveland is to have a rich theater scene while enjoying a custom cake baked and decorated by Susie Strom. Two lucky raffle winners received pairs of tickets to a performance.

The event was chaired by Linda McMullen and money raised will go to the temple’s Tzedakah Fund.

Shabbat Shirah - Sabbath of Song 2020 When the children of Israel crossed the Sea of Reeds and escaped Pharoah's chariots, they sang joyfully to their Redeemer. In commemoration thereof, Jews throughout the world observe Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song. It is a service with special melodies. This year, Shabbat Shirah will be Friday evening, February 7, 2020. Join our Cantorial Soloist Rachel Eisenberg, and sing with us for what promises to be an enjoyable evening of Jewish music.

President’s Message, continued from page 4

Wow! Who’d have guessed that belief in religion, in G-d, would elevate our children? Who would imagine that believ-ing in The World to Come as a reward for a life lived justly would motivate people to live well? Who could imagine that our children are traumatized by reading about hate crimes, school shootings, climate change, divisive politics, and all the rest of the negatives that are currently emphasized in American life? But those who have the faith to stand their ground are not traumatized. Those who find some reason to believe don’t turn to opiates.

We teach our children that there is free will, they can choose between good and evil. We teach them to study and learn well enough to question everything. We teach them to search for answers, to think critically. But most importantly, we teach them that life is not meaningless. There is a place for the righteous. There is sense to be made from a crazy mixed up world. Judaism, Torah, prayer, Tikun Olam will earn you a place in The World To Come. Now even some academics agree.

Bring your children to Shabbat services. They will have fun at some, like our Chanukah service on December 27th. They’ll be uplifted at others. Send them to religious school. Join them in learning about our faith. It’s good for their health.

*Don’t Believe in G-d, Lie to Your Children, Wall Street Journal, December 5, 2019

Education Director’s message, continued from page 4

we have to look upward, inward and toward each other for assurance and shelter.

These sentiments of violence are eerily similar to what the Maccabeam faced during the history of Chanukah and the second Temple - Beit Ha’mikdash. And just like Matithyahu’s sons, we must strength our children of their glorious tradition, we must unify together, find solace in one another, pray in unison and focus on how we can better ourselves; pass the knowledge and proudness of our Heritage to our children; and in turn, better the world, as the Jewish people have done for thousands of years.

Indeed the Jewish people still have much to be preoccupied with, but when we infuse joy and light into our teaching, service and commitment we can be assured that we are guiding our children to more sustainable and meaningful ways with which to lead our Jewish Community, and be secure and proud of who they are, wherever they might be now and in the future.

As we are just about to start our second semester of this busy and meaningful school year, please follow our calendar and join us for all the wonderful celebrations and events ahead. Our first day back to TINT religious school is Sunday, January 12, 2020. Our Tu B’shevat Seder will be held on February 9th. Looking forward to welcome all back to school soon. Todah - Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: If a name is listed twice or not on the date you expected, it is because some are listed according to the Hebrew calendar date, others by the civil calendar, as per a family member’s request.

If you have any questions about when a yahrzeit should be observed or when a name will be read at Shabbat services, please call the office.

In Memorium Our deepest sympathy to the family of Elaine “Cookie” Yelsky. May her memory be for a blessing.

Rabbi’s Message, continued from page 2

into slavery by his brothers. The whole Egyptian experience and slavery never may have happened! AND, Passover — the glorious redemption of our ancestors from Egyptian slavery would not have happened either! Nor would we have journeyed to Mount Sinai for the Ten Commandments and the Torah. And you know what? If you think about it — your life can change by bumping into Mr. Unknown or Mrs. Unknown. Whether we realize it or not, every person we rub shoulders with, every person we come in contact with — is effected by the encounter. A smile may brighten someone’s day. A nasty look may depress her. A kind word may lift his spirits and start a chain reaction of cheerfulness. Let us be comforted in the knowledge that there are countless unsung heroes all around us — you might be one of them — who will keep our country strong and our people invigorated. You never know the ripple effects of your actions. Take a good look at this IsraeLight and see how and where you can create some ripple effects. Let me conclude with two clichés — which means, they are wise and true teachings. (1) You never know the ripple effects of your actions. (2) Pray as if everything depends upon God, and act as if everything depends upon you. Happy New Year 2020.

January 17 — 2nd Grade Naming Service & Oneg The Book of Exodus begins, “These are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob.” The Torah then goes on to list the names of our ancestors. So too, do we list the names of our second grade religious school students. Every year, during this service, the rabbi reads Torah with the students and talks about each child’s name and meaning. Join us for an even-more-joyous-than-usual Shabbat. Coming to the bima this year are second grade students Sophia Derin, Nathan Mitchell and Eytan Shtoff. Mazel Tov to them and their parents!
