Over one hundred miles of electricalcable, 11,750 sheets of drywall, 230,000exterior brick, 599 tons of steel and 175construction workers later, IndianaUniversity – Purdue University Fort Wayneis privileged to offer the campus andcommunity a stunning new 110,000square foot space in which to gather.

With a project this large, how does adesign team begin to determine all of theingredients needed in an extremelycomplicated recipe? It was essential forthe building’s architectural firm ofSchenkel Shultz to seek not only theinput of acousticians and theatredesigners nation-wide, but also theneeds of the student musicians andfaculty.

Robert Bean, chair of the IPFWDepartment of Music, was an integralmember of the planning committee,responsible for preparing the 32-pageAcademic Program Statement outliningall of the space requirements needed bythe department in the new John andRuth Rhinehart Music Center.Relocating from the basement of theClassroom Medical Building to the northend of campus, Bean had the concernsand wishes of numerous individuals tobring to the design team.

“The opportunity to help meet theneeds of our department in a newbuilding was a thought-provoking andexhilarating process,” said Bean.

“Keeping in mind a set budget, wehad to make sure we included thefacilities to house the resources tofoster dynamic growth in ourdepartment.”

Music education, for example,has a dedicated classroomconfigured like a typical elementaryschool music room, where futureeducators will learn to teach, as well

as, a resource room that housesspecialized music educationmaterials. Orff instruments are nowstored on convenient carts andracks with their own closets forstorage, saving dozens of hoursloading and unloading supplies.

The instrumental and choralrehearsal rooms each have adjacentstorage for instruments and risers,

along with a library convenientlylocated between, and easilyaccessed by, each rehearsal room.Rather than 14 practice modules,student musicians now have 24separate practice rooms in which torehearse, with four of those roomshaving state-of the-art recordingcapabilities. Faculty and studentswho want to record rehearsals andperformances can now do so oncutting-edge equipment in bothrehearsal halls, along with theRhinehart Recital Hall and the AuerPerformance Hall.

More space was created forperformance instruction includingspacious piano studios largeenough to accommodate matchinggrands and a large sound isolatedpercussion studio. Computer labsand classrooms accommodate notonly current technology, but areready to handle futureadvancements.

Chancellor Michael Wartell alsowanted to have dedicated officespace allocated for Community ArtsOrganizations, making the IPFWcampus the central location for theiroperations. Those groups includeFort Wayne Area Community Band(FWACB), Fort Wayne Children’sChoir (FWCC), Foundation for Artand Music in Elementary Education(FAME), and Unity Performing ArtsFoundation, Inc.

Unity is currently in their seventhyear of operation and have had theiroffices on the IPFW campus sincetheir inception in 2000. Their newoffice space will be ready to occupyby mid-fall. Choral Program

“We enjoy being on campus andfind it is a great benefit to ourstudents. They get the experienceof being on a college campus and ithas definitely inspired many of themto go on to college,” Johnson said.

Welcome from Chancellor WartellWhen you look at plans for a building as magnificent as The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center and have all the intricate details pointed out to you, you know it’s going to take time to bring that vision to fruition. In fact, it’s taken more than five years for those plans and blueprints to be turned into these exquisite spaces you see here tonight. It also takes daring

individuals, innovative thinkers, and leaders in the community with the same vision the university has to make it happen.

It was through the support of the Rhinehart family,the Auer family, our state and local elected officials, and the dozens

of other supporters who have so generously donated tothis project, that this Music Center has become a reality.

“Maestro Tchivzhel is, simply put,a master. I was stunned to hearMaestro Tchivzhel’s music-makingthat is indisputably commanding andcommunicative,” wrote Yo-Yo Ma afterperforming Dvorák’s Cello Concertoin Greenville, South Carolina,with Tchivzhel. Born in Leningrad (St. Petersburg),Russia, into a family of professionalmusicians, Tchivzhel (pronouncedchiv-gel) showed exceptional musical

talent from an early age. He graduated from the LeningradConservatorie with the highest distinction in the areas ofpiano and conducting, and completed three more years ofpostgraduate study at the Conservatorie’s Higher Academy ofMusic in the prestigious conducting classes of Arvid Jansons. While still a student, Tchivzhel scored a remarkablesuccess by winning the Third Soviet Conductor’s Competitionin Moscow. He worked as assistant conductor to thelegendary conductor Evgeni Mravinsky with the St. PetersburgPhilharmonic Orchestra from 1974–77. By the late 1970s,Tchivzhel appeared as permanent guest conductor withthe Leningrad Philharmonic and conducted the MoscowPhilharmonic, the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra,Leningrad’s Kirov Theatre of Opera and Ballet, and otherorchestras throughout the former U.S.S.R. In 1973, Tchivzhelbecame music director and principal conductor of the KarelianSymphony Orchestra of National Television and Radio, a positionhe maintained until 1991.

Tchivzhel’s career has achieved international statuswith appearances in England, Germany, the Czech Republic,Poland, Romania, Scandinavia, Australia and New Zealand.As associate conductor of the U.S.S.R. State SymphonyOrchestra, he toured widely and scored great success during atour in Japan in 1990. Tchivzhel is permanent guest conductorof the Auckland Philharmonic in New Zealand (where he servedas artistic advisor for two years) and continues to conductregularly in New Zealand and Australia. In February 1991, Tchivzhel was enthusiasticallyreceived during a tour of the State Russian Symphony Orchestrain the United States. “In a burst of firepower and pinpointprecision, the USSR State Symphony under conductor EdvardTchivzhel dazzled the Van Wezel audience,” wrote a critic for theSarasota Herald Tribune. “The crowd went wild!” exclaimed theDetroit News. At the conclusion of this tour, he defected to theUnited States. Tchivzhel has since conducted with several Americanorchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony and the AtlanticSinfonietta, where he served as the music director from 1992–1994. Tchivzhel returned to Russia in 2003 (for the first timesince his defection) to once again conduct the St. PetersburgPhilharmonic in a performance of Mahler’s Fifth Symphony. In addition to his primary position as music director ofthe Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Tchivzhel serves as music directorof the Greenville Symphony Orchestra (South Carolina) andteaches master classes in conducting as distinguished visitingprofessor at Furman University. He and his wife, Luba, have ason, Arvid. The Tchivzhel family became U.S. citizens in 1999.

Todd O. Prickett, is assistant professorof music and director of choral studiesat IPFW where he conducts theUniversity Singers, Chamber Singers,and Choral Union, and teaches basicconducting and choral conducting. Hereceived a Bachelor of Music Educationand Master of Music degrees fromTexas Christian University, and a Doctorof Musical Arts from Michigan StateUniversity. His conducting mentors

have included Ronald L. Shirey, Charles K. Smith, JonathanReed, and David Rayl. Prior to his appointment at IPFW in fall2003, Prickett served as a graduate teaching assistant at MSU

in East Lansing, Michigan. In that position, he conducted theState Singers (the university’s largest and oldest undergraduatechoral ensemble) and Chamber Singers, as well as teachingchoral conducting. While in Lansing, he was also musicaldirector of the Steiner Chorale, a semi-professional chorus,and director of music at the historic Plymouth CongregationalChurch. A member of the American Choral DirectorsAssociation, Prickett sang for five seasons as a tenured memberof the world renowned, 54-voice professional chorus of theOregon Bach Festival, conducted by master-teacher HelmuthRilling. He also serves as conductor of the Fort Wayne YouthChorale, the most advanced ensemble of the Fort WayneChildren’s Choir.

Amy Prickett, lyric soprano, is quicklygaining a national reputation, Pricketthas appeared as a guest artist with theGrand Rapids Symphony, Fort WaynePhilharmonic, Lansing Symphony,Adrian Symphony, St. Clair Symphony,Calvin College Oratorio Society, NorthEast Texas Symphony, and OregonBach Festival. She has appeared as the sopranosoloist in performances of Brahms’Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s

Requiem, Poulenc’s Gloria, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Faure’sRequiem, Haydn’s Mass in Time of War, and Mozart’s CoronationMass. In Fort Wayne, Prickett has been a frequent soloist with

the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium, singing Bach masterworksincluding the St. John Passion, B Minor Mass, Christmas Oratorio, and Magnificat. Prickett has also appeared regularlywith the Wind Ensemble and Early Music Ensemble at IPFW. Equally at home in operatic roles, Prickett has sungthe roles of Fiordiligi in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, Lola in Douglas Moore’s Gallantry, Diana in Offenbach’sOrpheus in the Underworld, and Elisetta in Cimarosa’s Secret Marriage. While residing in Texas, Prickett performed with theFort Worth Opera Chorus. Combining a career of performance with teaching,Prickett is a sought-after voice teacher. A graduate of MichiganState University and Texas Christian University, Prickett currentlyserves as a continuing lecturer in voice at IPFW. In this position,she teaches courses in diction for singers and applied voice.

Winner of the silver medal in the1981 Van Cliburn International PianoCompetition, Panayis Lyras hasbeen seen and heard by millions oftelevision viewers on PBS and the Artsand Entertainment cable network. Heis also the first prize winner of theGina Bachauer International PianoCompetition in Utah, the Universityof Maryland International PianoCompetition, and the Three Rivers

Piano Competition in Pittsburgh, and the silver medalist in theArthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition inIsrael. A native of Athens, Greece, Lyras received a Bachelor andMaster of Music degrees from The Juilliard School and is artist-in-residence and professor of piano in the College of Music atMichigan State University.

Since his 1980 recital debut in the prestigious AmbassadorAuditorium in Pasadena, California, Lyras has performed solorecitals in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, theKennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and other cities acrossNorth America. His orchestral engagements have includedperformances with the Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras,the Buffalo and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, the BostonPops, and the San Francisco, Dallas, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh,Indianapolis, Baltimore, Phoenix, Florida, Omaha, New Mexico,Nashville, New Jersey, Utah, North Carolina, Honolulu, andPacific symphony orchestras. Internationally, Mr. Lyras has performed with theHong Kong Philharmonic, the Orquesta Filarmonica de la UNAMin Mexico City, the Orquesta Filarmonica de Montevideo inUruguay, the Jerusalem and Haifa Symphony Orchestras inIsrael, the National and Capetown Symphony Orchestras inSouth Africa, and toured England and Taiwan. He is a Steinwayartist, and has recorded for Varèse Sarabande and Pantheon.

The IPFW John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center

was designed by the architectural firm of Schenkel

Shultz to serve the university and the community.

Visually exciting, the building was created with

glass-prismed piano studios, conference rooms,

and lobby that provide exquisite spaces for

learning and interaction, with panoramic

views of the IPFW arts plaza and the

heart of the campus.

Inside and out, The John and

Ruth Rhinehart Music Center

fine-tuned. Teaching studios,rehearsal spaces, and practicerooms are acoustically isolated andacoustically calibrated. Floatingfloors and ceilings, massive walls16”-18” thick, and door seals ensurethere will be no vibration, nobounced sound, and no echo. Twoprograms can occur at the sametime, one in the small recital hall andone in the larger performance hall,without interfering with each other.

“The challenge was to make thearchitectural design an acousticenvelope,” says Schenkel ShultzPrincipal, Richard Stump. Eachbuilding element was designed inconcert between the architect andacoustician to enhance sound. Foracoustic balance, the 1,600-seatAuer Performance Hall and 250-seatRhinehart Recital Hall feature woodand canvas reflector panels hangingfrom the superstructure toaccommodate unamplified vocalsand instrumentation for the IPFWMusic Department and Fort WaynePhilharmonic musicians, as well asamplified spoken word for theOmnibus Lecture Series speakers.

Beginning in November 2005,at a cost of $25 million, the

entire project was developedusing a synchronized

walls, and windows, books andtests. It is more than science andmath, English composition andreading comprehension, engineeringand physics. It is also the structureof a melody, the mechanics ofplaying the piano, the symmetry of adance, the delivery of an actor’s line.All of these elements have cometogether in a symphony of planning,building, and giving to become TheJohn and Ruth Rhinehart MusicCenter at Indiana University-PurdueUniversity Fort Wayne.

There are many people whohave given generously to this projectand I want to publicly recognizesome of them right now. TheRhinehart family has always had astrong love for music and education.John and Ruth and their fourchildren enjoyed playing music; infact, they all played more than oneinstrument and often put on familyconcerts. The entire music building,as well as the 250-seat Rhinehart

Recital Hall is named in theirhonor. Ione and Edward Auerloved music of all kinds andreveled in the joy it gavethem. The 1600-seat Ione B.and Edward D. AuerPerformance Hall is named in

honor of their contributions to thisproject.

Ten other rooms or areas of thebuilding have been named in honorof the generosity of specific donors.Those rooms are the Schatzlein BoxOffice, the June Enoch MusicClassroom, the Ron VenderlyFoundation Music EducationClassroom, the Chapman ChoralRehearsal Hall, the Ator WoodwindTeaching Studio, the Dr. Rudy andRhonda Kachmann StudentCommons, the Edwin C.Schouweiler Family Music EducationResource Room, the Linda and KenBalthaser Music Practice Room, theLinda and Joe Ruffolo MusicPractice Room, and the GeneMarcus Piano Practice Room. Inaddition, we want to express ourgratitude to the many donors whohave purchased a seat or seats inthe Auer and/or Rhinehart Halls tohonor or memorialize a familymember or friend, plus the multitudeof donors who made gifts withoutnaming rights.

Others who have contributed to

the dream of this building becominga reality are the legislators, past andpresent, from northeast Indiana.Without their unwavering support atthe Indiana Statehouse, this musiccenter would have been virtuallyimpossible to build.

The John and Ruth RhinehartMusic Center will allow IPFW to offera wider variety of culturalopportunities to the community.With the added seating capacity,many more people will be able toattend our Omnibus Lecture Series,the vocal and instrumental concertspresented by our music studentsand faculty, and in the future, eventhe Fort Wayne Philharmonic.

The arts education of ourstudents and others will also beenhanced with the dedication of thisnew building. The practice areasare some of the best that can befound in this area, allowingcompeting styles of music topeacefully co-exist in side-by-siderooms, neither bothered by theother’s rhythms. Students will alsolearn the nuances of liveperformances with the wonderfulacoustics in both the RhinehartRecital and Auer Performance Halls.

As we prepare to dedicate thiswondrous structure, I am confidentthat the symphony of elements thatcame together to build The Johnand Ruth Rhinehart Music Centerwill continue to weave its magicthrough our lives and community,bringing the performing arts closerto everyone.
