MISSION AND HISTORY
OUR MISSION
Since 1978, the mission of The John Crosland School has been to provide students with specific
attention and learning differences the individualized college preparatory education to achieve
their highest potential. This college preparatory school creates an environment that nurtures and
protects what we value: curiosity, talents, character, humanity and dreams.
OUR HISTORY
The John Crosland School was established in 1978 by Mary Dore, PhD to address the needs of
children with learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Disorder. The original school as founded in
1978 was named Dore Academy. In 2012 the school was renamed The John Crosland School and
relocated to the 6-acre property on Parkway Plaza Drive. As the oldest comprehensive and
accredited K-12 school of its type in the state, Crosland has touched the lives of more than 3,500
students and families in the region. Dr. Dore believed that every student could learn, and in doing
so, become a productive member of society. She also believed that every student with a learning
disability should complete high school and be given the opportunity to go on to college, technical
school or career of their choice. Dr. Dore believed that advanced education would help students
begin a successful career allowing them to ultimately achieve success in life. The program she
established thrives today, 39 years later, and is a testament to the founder’s belief in education and
the impact it has on society.
Every staff member at The John Crosland School has specific training to ensure that the
educational needs of each student are met. A team of Crosland professionals develops a strategic
plan for each individual. Students are placed in small groups to maximize individualized
instruction and personal attention. Children participate in a wide range of extracurricular
activities including community service and athletics. A strong emphasis on technology and the arts
broadens and enhances our core program.
LETTER FROM HOS AND BOARD CHAIR

LETTER FROM HOS AND BOARD CHAIR
Dear Friends,
We have had a busy and productive year at The John Crosland School. As you read this report you
will see a few highlights of a year filled with successes. Though we were not able to list every
accomplishment we hope you will get a sense of the amazing community that is The John Crosland
School.
This year we had a significant change. Dr. Sean Preston left in December and we welcomed back a
former Head of School, Cathy Schlesinger, in an interim position, while we launched our search for
a permanent school leader. She hit the ground running in December with great passion for our
students and families, providing vital leadership during a time of transition. The new Head of
School will begin on or before July 1, 2018.
In the midst of changes this year we gained some nice additions to our team. We welcomed
several new students and families to our school community along with new therapy dogs, Callie,
and Bruce who joined us just before the holidays.
Our volunteers always make a significant difference to The John Crosland School and we can’t
thank them enough for all they did in 2016-2017 to make our school a welcoming place for
students, families, and staff. Parent Council volunteers and Gala committee members worked
throughout the year to enhance our school, show appreciation and raise needed funds. Our
volunteer board members kept us on a sound fiscal path and provided valuable leadership for our
Crosland community.
A heartfelt thank you to our donors who contributed to the school this year allowing us to keep
our systems up to date, provide scholarship assistance and program support for our teachers and
students. As you read through the report you will notice some of the new items provided by our
generous donors. We thank all of our community members who provided their time, talent and
treasure to The John Crosland School. We look forward with great anticipation to our 2017-2018
school year where we will be celebrating our 40th birthday. We hope you will celebrate with us!
Sincerely,
Christian Cherry, Chairman Catherine Schlesinger
