FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR
Wrestling with God Ge 32:24 So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. Ge 32:25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Ge 32:26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Ge 32:27 The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered. Ge 32:28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome.”
Genesis 32 is one of the strangest, most wonderful passages in the Old Testament.
We find Jacob the trickster at the end of his rope, worried for his life, as he approaches his estranged brother. No wonder, the day before the encounter, he has a sleepless night of fear and apprehension.
When Jacob is completely alone a man appears and they are locked in a wrestling match. The strange thing about this match is that Jacob isn’t wrestling to escape, or wrestling to win…Jacob wrestles to hold on. At some point in the night, Jacob realizes he is wrestling no mere man but God Himself (a theophany; perhaps an Old Testament appearance of Jesus!) Jacob refused to let go until God blessed him! Jacob was asking for a blessing to meet his perceived greatest need and wrestled all night! Can you imagine…all night!
As I was praying this morning the thought crossed my mind, am I wrestling with God over the great and important things in my life? Is my prayer frequent and intense, refusing to let go of God until He answers? Do I have the passion and desperation necessary to wrestle with God? At the thought, I had no choice but to return to my prayers and wrestle for my wife and sons, for you, and for the future of the church. I don’t believe wrestling with God in prayer is an affront to Him, but rather His desire. And when we refuse to let go, showing our faith, passion and desperation (He IS our only answer!) I believe it honors Him and He hears and acts on such behalf.
Who are you wrestling for? For most of us we have loved ones who don’t yet know Christ or aren’t walking the disciple’s path…wrestle for them! We have brothers and sisters in our church family who are struggling with physical or spiritual challenges…wrestle for them! The contemporary church, our church, has so many challenges when considering the future…wrestle for us! I believe God hears and honors such prayers!
As you read this we are more than half way through our 30 days of prayer. I hope you have been wrestling daily in your prayer time. If you have forgotten to pray, please, begin again. We desperately need a fresh vision and a fresh wind to sweep through our congregation. And I believe our Father is waiting for us to acknowledge Him so that He might bless us.
18:3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ Lk 18:4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, Lk 18:5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!’ ”
FROM THE DESK OF THE SENIOR PASTOR (Continued)
This parable is called an ‘a fortiori’ parable or a ‘how much more’ parable. The point seems to be if an unrighteous judge will answer the request of a persistent person, how much more will your Father in heaven do for you as you persist in prayer with Him? Wrestle with God – to hold on! Persist in your prayers – this honors Him and demonstrates your faith! And surely the righteous God of heaven and earth will hear and act on our behalf.
Pastor Cal
(I’ll be wrestling for YOU!)
OUR JHBC CHOIR CHRISTMAS PROJECT
To show the real meaning of Christmas 2018, our JHBC Choir collected a variety of food items that would be donated to the Christian United Outreach Center located in Sanford. When all the donated food items were delivered, we had collected 179 pounds of food for CUOC.
JOB WELL DONE CHOIR!

WMU NEWS Many thanks to all those who contributed to our Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. In March we will turn our focus to our North American missionaries and on the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. More information on that mission study and emphases in the March Announcer. Also thanks to everyone who brought pillows for the homeless shelters. We will continue to collect those hotel toiletries throughout the year. Our goal is to provide small hygiene kits for all those who come to the Powell River Shoe Ministry in August. We have made up around 50-75 kits so far—but our goal is 400 plus. So we still need lots of toiletry items!
I want to take this opportunity to talk about a couple of recent developments concerning our online presence. One that you are aware about and one you might not be aware of. The one you may have heard about is our live webcast. We started it during Advent, and it took up some time to get some sound issues worked out, but every Sunday morning we will have the morning worship service live on the church website and on our Facebook page. As time goes by, I’m looking to add some more features to it. Right now, though, I’m looking for a couple of people who are dedicated in learning how to run it each week. If you are interested, please let me know. The one that isn’t so obvious concerns our website. Ever since I’ve been at JHBC, it’s been a labor of love to tweak and update our website to what it is today. Part of that process has been working on our search engine optimization. In other words, when a person does a Google search, I want our church to be at least on the first page, if not the first item that comes up. I’m pleased to tell you that if you type, “Baptist churches Sanford NC” in Google, our church is the first one that shows up in the organic search results (outside the advertisements). The website is still a work in progress, and you’ll be seeing more changes to it soon. Finally, I want to talk about our upcoming Senior Adult Valentine Breakfast sponsored by the Children’s Ministry Team. We’ve done the Senior Adult Valentine Lunch / Breakfast a few different ways over the years. This year, I want to emphasize intergenerational community, which is why we will be having the breakfast at 9:45 AM on February 10. I’m asking all senior adult and children’s Sunday School classes to meet in McDowell Hall for a time of fellowship, food and a Sunday School lesson led by me. So, I look forward to seeing you all that morning for a wonderful time. Finally, we are having a Family Movie Night on Sunday night, February 17 at 6:00 PM in McDowell Hall. We will be watching the movie The Case for Christ, which came out in theaters a couple of years ago. We will have all your favorite movie snacks available. I hope you will come out that evening and encourage you to bring a friend.
Blessings, Rich

Worship Notes from Scott
Postures of Worship Read this:
Mark 12:30 – “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
You cannot love the Lord like this (above) in the same way as you do when you’re watching the latest episode of Blue Bloods from your couch or recliner, or with the same mentality as when you are driving across Nebraska… snore… yahn… Worship is an experience that should engage not just your mind, or just your heart, or just your spirit, but all of them, and not just in a subtle way. Worshiping God engages your whole being and includes a physical dynamic. If you’re engaged in a football game, or whatever, and something awesome happens, what do you do? In a low, monotone voice say, “Yay.”? No, you jump up out of your seat, scare your children or your spouse and yell, “Yes, that’s the way it’s done!”. When looking for examples of worshipers in the Bible, David may be the best example we could offer up as the ‘complete worshiper’. We remember his as a great writer of hymns/psalms, as a musician, and a singer, but one of his most memorable worship experiences that we have recorded is in 2 Samuel 6. They are bringing the ark of the covenant back to Jerusalem, and in v. 14-15 it says, “David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the Lord with all his might while he and the entire house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.” When confronted by his wife Michal, he exclaims to her, “I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.” Essentially saying, “What I do, I do for the Lord, and if I make a fool out of myself in doing so, so be it!” Matt Redman, in his book The Unquenchable Worshiper writes,
“One of the Hebrew words for praise, hallal, means to be clamorously foolish or mad before the Lord. (That’s where we get our word “hallelujah.”) In a “reasons to be passionate competition”, the church of God should come in an easy first; yet too often we find ourselves lagging way behind in this area. Isn’t it time we saw a bit more holy mayhem in our worship?”
Don't misunderstand me, I am not suggesting, nor will you see me anytime in the near future partially disrobed and strenuously dancing in one of our services. But I can't help but think that God is pleased when He sees His people worshiping Him with all their being. He gives us many examples of what that looks like. Clapping Psalm 47:1 - "Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy." Kneeling Psalm 95:6 - Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker." Lifting Hands Ps. 63:4 - "I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands." Shouting Psalm 66:1 - "Shout for joy to God, all the earth!" If you have been waiting for permission to give God a round of applause after one of our songs, to kneel in prayer right there in your row, to lift your hands in praise and honor of God, or just sing a little louder or give Cal an "Amen!" when he preaches the truth about God, then this is your cue. Go for it! Love and worship God with everything you have and are.
Deacon’s Corner Submitted by Russ Stevens
Mr. John Hall, Deacon Chair, called the Monday, January 7, 2019, Deacons meeting to order at 6:30 PM. Twelve of fifteen deacons were present with the staff represented by Pastor Calvin Sayles. Mr. Sam Wornom led the devotion based on Joshua 1:1-9 and Matthew 28:30, reminding us all that our all-powerful, all knowing God is with us “wherever we go.” After everyone present shared their prayer requests, Sam led us in prayer. All deacons reported 315 total contacts for December. Pastor Cal Sayles discussed his activities for the month with emphasis on prayer and fasting. Ministers Richard Wood and Scott Davis submitted written reports.
Business of the church discussed: Annex Building Ad Hoc Committee Report by Jamie Bowen—found some language in
question concerning the foundation. Jamie Bowen was to contact Mr. Sublet with a modified document for his approval.
Tolliver Scholarship—$10,000 invested through Edward Jones. Additional donated funds
will be sent to Edward Jones.
Security Camera Request—Jason Howard of J.S. Howard Electric has been contacted for quotes on installing cameras at the front door of the sanctuary as well as providing power to cameras covering the parking lot facing the Covington property and the parking lot at McDowell Hall.
Deacons: A Biblical Perspective—a letter has been sent to all members concerning change
to qualifications of deacon candidates concerning divorce. Meeting was closed in prayer.

Jesus Loves Even Me
I am so glad that our Father in heave’n Tells of His love in the Book He has giv’n;
Wonderful things in the Bible I see— This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me.
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me.
Tho I forget Him and Wander away,
Still He doth love me wherever I stray; Back to His dear loving arms would I flee
When I remember that Jesus loves me.
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me.
O if there’s only one song I can sing
When in His beauty I see the great King, This shall my song in eternity be:
“O what a wonder, that Jesus loves me!”
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me, Jesus loves even me.
