The Annual Meeting was a glorious evening where the board and guests were able to express appreciation to Mar- shall as well as welcome Doug. In his report, Marshall reviewed the achievements of the Home as it continually strives to provide a high level of care to all residents. He was effusive in his praise of his colleagues on the board and their willingness to devote so many hours for the betterment of the Home. He acknowledged the work of the volunteer corps and their selfless efforts for the residents. Regarding his role he commented, “Getting an insider’s view of the workings of the Jewish Home and interacting with staff and board gave me a better appreciation of the magnitude and value of the Home and the enormity of the responsibility.” Attorney Jerry Weinberger, chair of the Finance Committee, reviewed the operating statement of the Home for 2017. He noted that the Home operates at a deficit in order to provide a high level of care to all residents. But he emphasized that the generosity of donors through the Annual Membership Campaign and general donations and bequests throughout the year make the deficit manageable. He thanked all the donors for their generosity. A special event of the evening was the presentation of a recognition award to Ilise Rubinow, retiring administrator of Elan Gardens. Rabbi Sandhaus recounted his long association with Ilise starting 38 years ago. Ilise first served as the Homes’ Director of Social Services and then Assistant Administrator. When Elan was built over 20 years ago, she accepted the assignment of administrator of that facility and developed it along with its board into the premier personal care facility in the region. Rabbi Sandhaus described her tireless efforts both at the Home and Elan Gardens. He said that “her pro- fessionalism and consistency of performance established a legacy within the Jewish Home family and indeed within the entire Jewish Community that will long be remembered and appreciated.” “You made a mark,” he added, “and leave a precious gift.” Rabbi Sandhaus devoted the majority of his report to recognition of the staff and key personnel. “So much of our success,” he noted, “is a result of a wonderful and capable leadership in each department.” The main emphasis of his remarks came toward the end of the meeting as he paid tribute to Marshall Kornblatt. Douglas Fink Assumes the Mantle of LeadershipAs we prepare to go to press, the Jewish Home announces

that Douglas Fink was elected President and Chairman of the Board at the May 31st Annual Meeting. Having served as Vice President, he succeeds Marshall Kornblatt who completed a three year stint in those capacities.

The Annual Meeting was a glorious evening where the board and guests were able to express appreciation to Mar-shall as well as welcome Doug.

Regarding his role he commented, “Getting an insider’s view of the workings of the Jewish Home and interacting with staff and board gave me a better appreciation of the magnitude and value of the Home and the enormity of the responsibility.”

Attorney Jerry Weinberger, chair of the Finance Committee, reviewed the operating statement of the Home for 2017. He noted that the Home operates at a deficit in order to provide a high level of care to all residents. But he emphasized that the generosity of donors through the Annual Membership Campaign and general donations and bequests throughout

the year make the deficit manageable.

He said that “her pro-fessionalism and consistency of performance established a legacy within the Jewish Home family and indeed within the entire Jewish Community that will long be remembered and appreciated.”

“You made a mark,” he added, “and leave a precious gift.”Rabbi Sandhaus devoted the majority of his report to

recognition of the staff and key personnel. “So much of our success,” he noted, “is a result of a wonderful and capable leadership in each department.” The main emphasis of his remarks came toward the end of the meeting as he paid tribute to Marshall Kornblatt.

Prior to presenting Marshall with a plaque as a memento of his years of service, Sandhaus said, ”For me, Marshall was both a mentor and friend. He motivated me to higher achievements with a gentle but firm resolve. He had perfect patience to guide the executive and made himself available to me at all hours. With great honor we will add his picture to our wall of Presidents as a way of expressing our lasting appreciation for devotion to the Jewish Home.”

Incoming President Douglas Fink expressed his sense of honor and accompanying responsibility inherent in assum-ing the Presidency of the Jewish Home. He, too, thanked Marshall for his service and would hope to build on his suc-cessful tenure.

Rabbi Dovid Saks served as the Installing Officer and de-livered an inspiring message.

Bill Conlon named Director of Environmental Services

When William “Bill” Conlon was hired as Environmental Services Supervisor in October of 2015, he hoped he would get the opportunity to step up to the plate and take on a big-ger role for the Home at some point. With a recent shift of director roles he was given just that!

After serving under former Director of EVS and IT Services, Kevin Tetreault, for over 2 years Bill was named Director of Environmental Services and officially took leadership of the department in March of this year.

Bill, a lifelong Archbald native, is excited that the Home has turned to him to lead the highly regarded Environmen-tal Services Department. “We have a lot of great long term employees and some new hires we are excited about,” Bill shares. “I am looking forward to working with the EVS staff and have some innovative ideas,” Bill said, referring to his plan to cross train EVS staff so that they are able to serve in several different roles within the department.

As a former police officer of 27 years, Bill brings a patient and steady demeanor to the EVS department. Desiring a more normalized work schedule than police work allowed, Bill began his career in facilities man-agement, work-ing in both secu-rity and environ-mental services, prior to coming to the Home. A volunteer fire-man, Bill also possesses exten-sive knowledge in Fire Code and Safety.

“ Th e H o m e has a great EVS p r o g ra m a n d gives us all the tools we need to provide great re-sults!” Bill states. “I am looking for-ward to the new challenges the position brings with it.”

Bill resides in Archbald, PA with his wife Brenda and their daughter Kelsey. He enjoys fishing, umpiring softball and travel. He plans to earn his Certified Healthcare Environmen-tal Services Professional (CHESP) certificate in 2019.

Bill can be found in the Environmental Services Department located in the lower level and reached by calling 570-344-6177, ext. 1126.

When Kevin Tetreault joined the staff of the Jewish Home 23 years ago, there may have been a computer or two in the Business Office. Today the facility is wired (and wireless) from the basement to the 5th floor!

Kevin joined the staff of the Jewish Home in June of 1995 as Director of Housekeeping & Laundry Services. He spent over 2 decades managing a department that gained a reputa-tion for maintaining an impeccable facility.

As the use of technology became widespread near the turn of the century, the Home turned to Kevin to support its ever growing computer network. In 2002 Kevin took on the dual role of Director of Environmental & IT Services and in the years that followed ushered the facility into the tech filled era that health care providers live in today. “The JH is now fully networked with computers, laptops, printers and many other forms of Technology. IT is found in every area of the facility,” Kevin states. “It is used by every employee and many of our residents on a daily basis,” he adds.

With the sudden and increasing growth of the use of IT, it was time to adjust Kevin’s role to focus on the needs of the facility in this area. So in January 2018 the facility did just that, naming Kevin Director of Technology. “I am excited with the prospect of being able to focus on Tech and provide our residents, staff and guests with full-time support. We have a lot of exciting things coming up on the tech side and it was time to make the change,” Kevin said referring to the ongo-ing implementation of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.

Kevin has always been a self-proclaimed “geek”, fond

Focus on Technology of technology from a young age. He grew up with a love of au-dio/video equipment and video gaming sys-tems. While in high School he attended the Career Technol-ogy Center (Vo-Tech) for three years, ma-joring in Electronics Technology. Kevin graduated from John-son College with a degree in Bio-Medical Technology. He holds the CompTIA Certi-fication as an IT Pro-fessional and several other Microsoft spe-cific certificates. Kevin is currently enrolled in Google’s IT Support Professional training which he hopes to successfully complete by the end of 2018.

Kevin resides in Lake Ariel with his wife Patricia and their two children, Ezra and Gabrielle. He is a passionate fan of his children’s athletic careers and volunteers his time serving on the boards of their various athletic programs. “I still find time for those video games,” he says with a smile.

Kevin may be found in his new office located on the 5th Floor and reached at 570-344-6177 Ext. 1160.

Each year presents a challenge as the Jewish Home reaches out to its friends and contributors throughout NEPA and beyond to ask for support of its programs. “We have yet to be disappointed,” noted President Marshall Kornblatt to the wonderful and generous response to the Home’s call for assistance. “It is truly heartwarming and encouraging to see such an enthusiastic response to our requests,” he added.

The campaign was directed this year by co-chairs Faye Bishop and Jeffery Roth with the assistance of committee members who joined in a successful telethon. Kornblatt credited them and the fine work of the Home’s administrative staff in reaching our goal. Kornblatt remarked that both Faye and Jeff displayed creative approaches and determination to achieve a success-ful outcome. As we go to press, the campaign raised a total of $140,000 from both members and business associates. We are listing the names and categories of our donors. We have tried to be accurate. If you spot an error, please let us know so we can correct it in the next Journal. Again, thank you!

View of the Administrator:Ilise Rubinow

Spring has sprung at Elan Gardens and we are looking forward to a long, beautiful summer. Each morning as I enter our campus, I am astonished by the beauty of our building and grounds. It never ceases to amaze me that this special place grew from a seed of thought from our founders. To have such a great facility in such a small community is truly a feat.

I know that our residents appreciate our property. Several of them brave the elements all year long and walk outside daily. But once the spring appears, the porches, patios, and walkways are packed. Some are sun worshippers, others enjoy the safe and level walking, and most just enjoy the feeling of the breeze and the benefit of a great view.

Our activities department makes the most of these months by moving as many programs as possible outdoors. On these pages we have compiled some photos showing some of our outside activities. We are so thankful to the original planners of Elan Gardens for thinking ahead to the best way to maximize our beautiful acreage. Additionally we are forever appreciative of the English Garden and patio which was gifted to us by Roz Marks. It is where we hold “Party on the Patio,” lunch time barbecues, live entertainment, happy hour, and a variety of games. Our Memory Lane residents benefit from the ground level patio adjacent to their living space. They can easily and safely get around with the added benefit of a beautiful and practical picket fence.

Many of you already know that my own personal view is about to change dramatically. After a total of 38 years at The Jewish Home and then Elan Gardens, I will be retiring this year. I must admit that it is quite shocking to realize that I am at the age when retirement is a real consideration. David and I are making a huge change in our lives by moving to western Pennsylvania to be close to our children and grandchildren. They are urging us to do so and we can’t imagine a better opportunity.

I consider myself tremendously lucky to have found a home in this great organization. I have had the privilege to know hundreds of residents and their family members. Similarly I have worked with so many people who began as coworkers and ended as dear friends. My Elan Gardens family is just that, family. I have learned from the very best in lay leadership, first at The Jewish Home and then from the past and present (and future) leaders of Elan Gardens. Last but definitely not least, I have had the benefit of being mentored by the very best, Rabbi Samuel K. Sandhaus. He has guided me through 38 years of professional challenges and opportunities, and walked with me through personal hardships and tragedies.
