WHAT IS TZABA? (TRANSVAAL, ZIMBABWE AND BOTSWANA ASSOCIATION)TZABA has its roots in the 19th century when it was an association of people in British parishes, most of whom had lived and worked in Dioceses in Southern and Central Africa, and, on their return to Britain, wished to maintain their connection with the Church in Africa.

As the initials would suggest, the Association (eg Rhodesia changed to Zimbabwe) has kept updated and its members meet annually in June, whilst keeping in touch through “PARTNERS”, a journal which we produce twice yearly, at Easter and Advent, containing contributions, news and views from the 13 Dioceses we support in the Capricorn belt. We rely heavily on our companion Bishops in those Dioceses to keep us aware of the needs and projects within their see.

Today, TZABA administers a number of capital funds whose income is restricted for

particular purposes, and raises other funds which are at the disposal of the Trustees. We see ourselves as one channel among many supporting the Church in the ‘Capricorn Belt’ of Africa and informing the wider Church about the developing life of those Churches.

We are a UK registered Charity No.238146. Further details about TZABA can be obtained from the Secretary.

Happening - A Christian Experience

Diocese of Christ The King

Happening continues to be an active ministry to the youth, and by the youth, of our diocese. What is Happening?

For those unfamiliar with the programme, Happening is a Christian experience presented by teenagers for teenagers with the help of clergy and lay adult leadership. It is an internationally co-ordinated programme. We currently conduct three weekends a year, but as of 2010 four weekends a year will be booked.

The purpose of the programme is to be one of the instruments within the Anglican Tradition to renew the Christian Church in the power of the Holy Spirit, in order that the Church may respond more readily to its call to spread the Kingdom of God throughout the world.

Happening - A Christian Experience sm seeks to achieve this purpose by bringing young persons and adults to a fuller personal knowledge of and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, and to a deeper level of commitment and apostleship.

During the Happening weekend (beginning Friday evening and continuing through Sunday afternoon) there are activities designed for

fun and Christian community building among participants.

Throughout the weekend a series of talks are presented by youth and clergy to logically present the elements that define a mature profession of faith and the catechism process. The presentation of key talks by youth using personal life experiences is intended to offer Christ’s message to attending Happeners on a level they can understand, and to answer many of the faith questions youth struggle with daily. Talks about church teachings and their importance in the lives of youth attending the weekend are presented by clergy in a fair and friendly manner. Each talk is a critical building block in the creation of the Happening message. The entire series of talks is given in a sequence that is intended to guide Happeners by opening an avenue of discussions to help them verbalize and internalize their faith questions in a safe environment and hopefully lead to a renewed or new relationship with Christ.

Letter from Bishop Peter Lee to his Diocese.

I would like to thank all of you for your love and support over a very long time, and especially in this glorious anniversary year of 2015. (25 years)

From the great service at Eldorado Park with Archbishop Thabo on Valentine’s Day through to the joyful gathering in Vanderbijlpark in the week of the Christ the King Festival, we have celebrated and given thanks, reflected carefully on our life and witness as Christians together in this area, and rededicated ourselves to the service of Christ going forward.

I personally love the Advent season because it seems like the Christians are getting ahead of the secular world, beginning our new year in worship and reflection before the sometimes meaningless parties on New Year’s Eve. So after our celebrations we are starting again by the grace of God and needing to look forward.

I am asking you to pray for a number of big challenges in the coming year.

Firstly the Diocese of Virginia in the United

The region is part of the North West Province of South Africa and lies west of Johannesburg, stretching from Klerksdorp up to the border with Botswana... there are many rural settlements as well as townships outside the main towns (one of a number of hang overs from apartheid which still remain). The main industries are mining (Gold and Platinum) and agriculture. Unemployment is quite high in some regions as a number of the mines have closed.

HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY to Matlosane Diocese!

Revds Nita Edwards and Lesley Bentley were present for the main celebrations. The photo and these words came from Nita’s blog in matlosanematters.blogspot.co.uk Lesley’s sermon looked back and on into the future, echoing the words on the celebration cake: “For all that has been – thanks! To all that will be – Amen!” The singing, as always, was brilliant…

We are delighted to welcome our first ever St Chads Volunteer from Matlosane—Phillip Kgowe Moleme, a Youth Worker with experience with the Siyafundisa Peer Education programme working with issues of HIV/AIDS. He is based at All Saints Streetly and we hope he is keeping warm!

Diocese of Matlosane – formerly Klerksdorp.

States, with whom we have travelled for many years, has asked us to share with them some of our experience of racism as they grapple with the racial violence which has gripped the US this year, and which poses challenges to the witness of the Church. That is a difficult assignment which we will be undertaking as a team of 6 of us in January.

Secondly I have called a short session of Synod in February to prepare for Provincial Synod later in the year. We will use that weekend also to dedicate one of our new projects and to give thanks together for it.

Synod will also be preparing for the change of Bishop which is appropriate after this long time and after our year of celebration. According to the Canons I have asked the Synod of Bishops to allow me to retire on 30 June 2016, The Archbishop has set the date for the election of my successor as 8-10 June. You will hear more about that in due course.

Meanwhile thank you again for the privilege of being your Bishop and let us keep on ploughing together until a new team takes over.

Sincerely in Christ

+Peter: Christ the King

Shared Diocesan Vision

Explaining the Logo

The Celtic Cross, symbol of our faith and of God’s unconditional love for us, is used here to remind us also of the five main points of our Diocesan Vision:

• The practice of the ministry of all believers is deliberately at the top, as that is the main desired outcome – ‘that every parishioner takes responsibility to contribute in an effective way to the life of the faith community and to be an effective Christian presence and witness in the broader community’.

• The ongoing spiritual formation of every member is central to our ability to achieve all the other aspects of our vision. God, increasingly visible in each of us, uses us for the transformation of church and world.

• Visionary, servant leaders are the roots that will encourage new growth and ensure the health of the community, while also modeling a different, more effective and more empowering style for society.

• Becoming vibrant, Christian community and being focused outward for the benefit of others and for the transformation of the world are the consequences of our commitment to serve God and others, within and beyond the congregations – the visible arms which proclaim Christ to the world through our lives and our relationships

How the days are flying by, we are already well into Lent and the Bishop’s schedule is overburdened. This is partly due to Bishop Dan taking a well deserved Sabbatical this October and November.

On 23rd January 2016 we welcomed two new Deacons to the Diocese at their Ordination at St Paul’s Church, Mashishing – and five Deacons were Priested – we wish you all a blessed and happy ministry in Mpumalanga.

At the Diocesan Office recently we had a small disaster (see photo) – a line of Blue Gum trees border the property next to the offices – these very old trees had been ring-barked by their

owners – we have been watching them slowly die! – one of these huge trees eventually fell over and onto our property causing damage to the wall and the veranda of the office. However....... “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Cor 4:8-12) We give thanks to God that nobody was hurt and that the tree missed the actual offices! We ask for prayers for the people of our

Diocese especially in the Barberton area – there was an unfortunate incidence at the Lily Mine just outside Barberton in the Lowveld Archdeaconry,

Huge rock falls occurred and three miners were trapped 14 days ago, at the time of writing they had not been brought to the surface... Please pray for their families. Ongoing strikes/vandalism/and general unrest continues in our townships and outlying areas due to lack of service delivery by Municipalities – the people have inadequate or no water supply, electricity and refuse removal etc. etc. People in these areas are desperate and very frustrated. DAYS 1 - 16: PRAY FOR THE BISHOP

Pray for Bishop Cleophas Lunga as he continues to hold the Diocesan vision, for the Clergy to share the vision with members of the laity in their various parishes; so that objectives are met and transformation, development and growth is realised in the Diocese.

DAYS 2 - 17: IN THE OUTLYING AREAS OF BULAWAYO

The challenges in the semi-urban and semi-rural areas seem to be quite different from the rest of the Diocese, notably:

1) Parishioners are not gainfully employed

2) They cannot sustain themselves adequately on the small portions of land that they have.

3) When the rains fail the problems are intensified.

DAYS 3 - 18: IN HIGH-DENSITY SUBURBS

In these High-Density Suburbs, houses are small and families are usually big. The extended family support system seems to be collapsing though there is vitality of faith and vigour of worship. Numerical and spiritual growth is significant.

DAYS 4 - 19: OUT OF BULAWAYO PARISHES

These parishes are characterised by vast areas which Priests have to cover both in town and in the rural areas. They face transport problems (there is limited Diocesan fleet). However the faithful worship with vigour and there is vitality of faith and growth is also significant there.

DAYS 5 - 20: IN THE RURAL AREA

In rural areas people produce their own food. In a normal situation, there is no stress and the pace of life is slow and very little money is required when the harvest is good. Unfortunately this year they have found life harder because of the current drought

(el-Niño induced). Priests are witnessing a high level of malnutrition. Pray for the desperately poor and hungry.

DAYS 6 - 21: IN LOW-DENSITY SUBURBS

The parishes in low density suburbs are usually well attended and so numerically bigger because of short distances that parishioners have to travel to the Church.

These multi-racial parishes need clergy who are able to value cultures of all races, and who are dynamic, imaginative and creative.

There can be more pressures to cope with in such parishes e.g. bills (water, electricity - wages), fuel support for rural Churches

However the de-industrialisation process forced by poor economic performance has posed difficulties to parishes that were once very viable. Lack of employment has become an issue.

DAYS 8 - 23: IN ST. MARY’S, ESIGODINI (Farming Area)

Pray for Fr. Francis Day and his parishioners of St. Mary’s; once a vibrant parish of successful farmers but now struggling.

Farmers are now challenged by the reality of having to learn new methods of farming and are forced to remain productive if they are to keep their land. Farm labourers have poor accommodation and their wages are low.

DAYS 9 - 24: IN DIOCESAN SCHOOLS AND CHAPLAINS Pray for: SCHOOL HEADS, DEPUTIES, TEACHERS, AND STUDENTS

(The rest of this prayer diary will be printed in the Advent issue of Partners; If anyone would like a full copy now, please let the editor know)

Bishop Chad Gandiya has revealed.that the Anglican Church has set up a committee to establish an institution of higher learning which the church can build. The Church Of the Central Province of Central Africa which inherited a ballooning debt from the excommunicated Bishop Nolbert Kunonga, who had forcibly occupied the church properties for five years, is still on a recovery path, however, things are going on well.

“A committee has been set up by the standing committee of our diocese to look into the possibilities of establishing an institution of higher learning. We don’t know what form that institution will be at the moment but the committee into it,” Bishop Gandiya said.the church had completed a feasibility study on some of the properties one in particular the church’s intention to construct a conference and convention center that will include a health and life style in Glendale. The church has already invested around US$5 million in the wedding venue and outdoors.

Gandiya said work is already in progress in renovating some of our institutions that had been left to dilapidation and “our education secretary is working with the heads of our schools on renovating those schools and improving them and so as a diocese.” Gandiya hailed church members for being, “tremendous in the support of their diocese. They have given sacrificially so that we can exist.”

On the debt that the church is owing Gandiya said the church has liaised with city council and Zesa (utility company) to pay what they afford until the debt is cleared. “When you think of 98 thousand dollars that’s only one of several debts owed that’s going to take us years and its painful-it’s painful for me as a leader-it’s painful for the members of the. church as they did not incur these debts

The Archdeacon of Lewisham and Greenwich leading a retreat for Manicaland clergy at Nyanga:

This photograph highlights the continuing importance of the link between the Diocese of Manicaland and the Diocese of Southwark in London. Frequent exchanges and visits are made between the two dioceses who support one another in many and various ways. In its turn, TZABA supports all our dioceses with their links.

A Partnership between the Croydon Episcopal Area of the Diocese of Southwark and the Anglican Diocese of Central Zimbabwe

The Croydon Zimbabwe Link is a two-way thing. At difficult times in Zimbabwe’s history, our partnership with them can and does make a great deal of difference, not just to them but also to us. We can help them in providing practical support for the projects they are undertaking (aid given via the Link goes directly to vital accountable projects, with no overheads taken off) and by encouraging them in their hope for the future. They can help us by sharing with us their faith, love, joyful worship and a real day-to-day trust that often puts ours to shame.

Medical/Orphan Project (UK Fundraiser: Jo Barton)

despite all these difficulties, the youngsters being cared for and nurtured by these centres appear well-fed, decently clothed, and generally in very good hands. The importance of their education is paramount, and every effort is made to ensure that the relevant fees are fully paid so that there is no interruption to their progress.

A major difficulty for many of the children is lack of official birth certificates, which can mean exclusion from many activities organized by the schools. At Bonda, particularly, there is great need for investment in the buildings and facilities – the Home is extremely dilapidated, and furniture and fittings desperately need to be renewed or updated. There are now 17 children resident there, some 10 fewer than some years ago, but conditions are certainly not up to the new standards recently introduced in Zimbabwe for such institutions. We shall need to consider what help we may be able to offer towards any upgrades that may be undertaken.

These photos give an idea of the conditions.

The children, however, appear well-fed and generally cheerful:

Recent news from Zimbabwe has been worrying, the current drought being classed as a major disaster, and this is borne out by our regular reports from Mabvuku (Harare) – in

January: “The rains are very poor this year. ... less than half of the rain we would expect by end Jan. Seasonal total to date is 288mm compared to 660mm this time last year. ... very hot and dry. Poor outlook for any crops.” and again, in February: “The economic situation in the country continues to worsen, with seasonal rains much below normal and very patchy resulting in severely stressed crops that will lead to even more hardship especially for the rural poor. Unemployment is at an all time high.” The same is seen in Bonda, some 150 miles away, from where we have a recent report that “... they had started a farming project but with the drought and poor rains this has affected the crop. Sadly, they do not have a reliable alternative source for water, they have 1 [tap? Pump?] provided by the school which is … for the most part dry, covering the home and hospital. They had started building a second one but it was never completed as villagers stole parts and pipes.” However,

Finally, our University student is almost at the end of his course, and we understand is hoping to land a job in the pig industry. We wish him well, and can only pray that the difficulties in the Zimbabwean economy will not prove insurmountable to such a committed and inspiring young man.

Once again, we are saddened to have to say “Goodbye” to one of our most long-standing members and supporters; JOHN DURNFORD who died just before Christmas in 2015. What follows was written by his widow, Angela who has also been a TZABA member for many years.

REV JOHN DURNFORD 1930 -2015

John grew up in a Northumberland Vicarage and to him, that county was always ‘home’. After Cambridge and Lincoln Theological College, he served curacies at Selby Abbey and Hull before marrying Angela and setting off to what was then Rhodesia.

The first two years were spent as an assistant to Reg Clark at St John’s, Umtali (now Mutare Cathedral) and he then moved to Bindura to be Rector of Mazoe Valley for 12 years. It was a large scattered multi racial parish and became a training parish for assistants, among them Jonah Borerwe (later Dean of Mutare) and David Gandiya (father of Bishop Chad). Returning to England in 1976 with Angela and their three children, John became Vicar of Hebden Bridge and then later Rector of the Blanchland group in Northumberland. John regarded his time in Zimbabwe as perhaps the most important in his ministry and the country remained in his thoughts and prayers right to the end of his life.
