It is the month of festival in Bali, Balinese Hindu celebrate New year in a celebration known as Nyepi or the silence day. They are not celebrating big loud party, instead they taken a day to reflect on what they have done in the last year and preparing self for a better new year. On the eve there will be an interesting ceremony held, the Ogoh-ogoh festival. All this ceremony certainly will add something special during your visit.

In this edition we also talk about Kolbano Beach the hidden beach in Timor Island. Jatiluwih rice terrance in Bali, a natural and cultural heritage for the world. Also other information to accompany you during your trip. Let’s get ready for the Journey.

A White sandy beach, black or gray is common. A colorful rock studded beach? Have you seen it? If not,

try going to the island of Timor, NTT! There is a very unique beach, the Kolbanobeach! The beach is different from most of the beach because the beach is not decorated with white sand but the expanse of colorful stones.

The beach is located in the District Kolbano, South Central Timor, East Nusa Tenggara . To reach the beach, you have to travel a distance of approximately 135 km from the city of Kupang or approximately 3 hours drive. The condition of the road to the beach are quite rough, with winding hilly roads, with a steep rise and fall. Along the way, you will see a variety of scenery. A green forest, paddy field, modest houses town with walled bamboo and thatched roofs.

You will also pass some unique bridge. One is Noelmina Bridge, which spans over the River Noelmina. The bridge is the limiting Kupang Regency South Central Timor. With a length of 240 meters, Bridge Noelmina received the title as the longest bridge on timor island and NTT. In addition of Noelmina Bridge, you will also pass two wooden bridges which are quite challenging, with a hole here and there. So you have to be extra careful through it. All four-wheeled vehicles that will pass this bridge had to queue for, because in addition to the narrow bridge condition, it is also quite old so feared not withstand heavy loads.

After a traveling 135 km from Kupang, you will arrive at a beach with a stunning panorama. As far as the eye could see, Stretch of colorful turquoise stones on the beachoverlooking the Indian Ocean and Australia.

world that makes people curious to visit. Uniquely, these stones have variance shape, size and color. There are round, oval, cube, prism, and others. Its size varies, ranging from the size of a marble to an adult fist. The most interesting is the colorful rocks. Ranging from standard rock colors, black, white, gray to gorgeous colors such as red, pink (pink), brown, peach, orange and gray-green. There is even a colored stone grading blend multiple colors with a pattern that is similar to marble.

In addition to colorful stones and blue ocean water, a giant rock stood on the right coast of the beach. The locals named it FatuUn. At first glance, a rock overgrown with grass and shrubs is shaped like a lion’s head. It is not easy to reach the summit of FatuUn because in some places the surface slippery and steep rocks. However, if you are up to some adventure, the prize is a breathtaking panoramic scene of Kolbano beach.

Unfortunately, the beauty of the Kolbano beach isnot matched by adequate supporting facilities. Until now, there has been no public transport to reach Kolbano Beach. On the beach is also not available in any facility such as toilets, gazebo or shelters. No restaurant or diner around the area, so don’t forget your lunch box.

A serious problem also threatens the beauty of Kolbano Beach, the illegal mining of colorful rock by local people. It makes a great ornament home decoration. Without any interference from the authorities, or else beauty and uniqueness Kolbano Beach only a memory that cannot be seen by our grandchildren.

Indonesia is a vast country with various tribes, cultures, religions, traditions, and festival. Specially when we talk

about Bali. As we know, Hinduism is the main religion practiced on Bali. The Hinduism in Bali is a lot different than the one practiced in India and the Hinduism in Bali has one of the most unique festivals called Nyepi Day.

silence, is an annual event that observed to celebrate Balinese New Year. It is very contradict way to celebrate new year, while in International New Year or event Chinese New Year, we will feel the crowd, noise, fireworks, and all night long party, but in Balinese New Year we celebrated it without much sound or cheer. It is a day of

reflection.Nyepi Day is commemorated every

Isakaswara (Saka New Year), a new year day as per the Sasih, the 12 month lunar calendar of Balinese people. The Balinese using the Gregorian calendar for business and government purposed and using other calendar system for the endless procession of holy days, temple anniversaries,

celebrations, marriage, building house, starting business, sacred dances, and other activities defines the Balinese life.

And Nyepi Day falls on the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox and opens a new year of Saka Hindu era which began in 78 A.D.

On March 21, 2015 is the next Nyepi Day in Bali. It observed annually from 06.00

A.M. until 06.00 A.M. the following morning. No traffic is allowed, not only cars, but also people. Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, but non Hindu residents of Bali observe the day of silence as well, event tourists are not exempt.

It’s a 24 hours prohibition, were all restaurants, stores, and businesses throughout the island are closed, including the international airport of Ngurah Rai. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles carrying those with life–threatening conditions and women about to give birth.

What should we do? Nyepi Day is a day

reserved for self–reflection or self-introspection to decide on values, eg humanity, love, patience, kindness, and all of other good things that should kept forever. On Nyepi day the world expected to be clean and starts as new. There are 4 main restrictions called Catur Brata Penyepian on this day, which are “amati geni”, no lighting fires; “amati karya”, no working; “amati lelanguan”, no entertainment; and “amati lelungan”, no travelling. The Hindus will also doing a 24 hours fasting on this day. They stay at home with families doing meditation and try avoiding any kind of noise.

Folklore states if the island remains quite and dark throughout Nyepi, it will fool any lurking demons into thinking that no one is home on the island and they should visit elsewhere. It means good luck and peace for the Balinese New Year.

Not only the Nyepi day in interesting, a few days before and after also have interesting ceremony occure.

The Tawur Kesanga or the Bhuta Yadnya Ritual is performed in order to vanquish the negative elements and create balance with God, Mankind, and nature. All village in Bali hold a large exorcism ceremony at the main village cross roads, the meeting place of demon, else know as the Ogoh-ogoh festival. It was held on the eve of Nyepi day. The Ogoh-ogoh is a puppet or demonic statue, made of bamboo and other materials, in the form of mythological beings, mostly demons named Bhuta

Kala (Bhuta : eternal energy, Kala : eternal time). It is considered a symbol of modes of nature that form the malicious characters of living beings.

The ogoh–ogoh are made by the group of artist or youth found in Banjar in each village. It will be carried around the village to bewilder the evil spirit so they go away and finally burnt into ashes as a way of exorcising evil.

So, being in Bali during this time, it is a very unique cultural experience and

celebrate this marvelous festivals and most honored annual tradition of Balinese Hinduism to bring good luck and peace in our lives and one you will never forget.


Berugak is a typical building of Sasak tribe inLombok. The building is supported by four pillars called

“sekepat” or six poles called “sekenam”. Berugak is inseparable part of traditional Lombok home; it is dated back from the 17th century, when the Kingdom of Karangasem rules the island. The architecture of Lombok mated the premises of Balinese architecture, up until today.

The existence of berugak for Sasak people has important meaning. Berugak used as living room, a place to gather with family or hold a cultural event.

A”Sekenam” or “sekepat” berugak, each has a different value of philosophy, the four poles berugak has meaning of the truth must take precedence, confidence in holding the mandate, to deliver something should be honest and innocent and as a believers should be smart in addressing or responding to a problem.

Likewise, the Sekenam berugak has a similar value of philosophy;it is usually located at the rear of the house and used as a place of learning and teaching manners to the family members, cultivation of cultural values and as an internal meeting family.

As in any part of the eastern civilization, there is always a philosophy behind every single part of life and so does the berugak. It is not just a structure for the people of Sasak, it is an integral part of their life, it is where they learn about life’s itself.

Jatiluwih, in the Balinese dialect, is translated to mean Beautiful Teak. This stunning stretch of rice fields is located in

the Tabanan District, lies about 40 kilometers from Denpasar, or about 2 hours by road.

At an altitude of 640 meters above sea level, the cool mountain air merges with the warm sea breeze. From atop the hill, visitors can take in the fresh air, appreciate the scenic views, and relax in the calming atmosphere.

It was extremely peaceful and the fields even provided us a concert in the form of gurgling waters and the rhythmic drumming of wind powered noisemakers designed as scarecrows to keep birds from eating the rice grains.

The vast expanses of terraced, green rice paddies are stepped along an entire mountain, from its peak to where its foot meets the sea.

The fields that make up this area have adopted the traditional “Subak” irrigation system – a method that has been preserved for centuries and passed down from generation to generation.

The Subak System reflects the philosophical Balinese Hindu concept of Tri Hita Karana, which brings together the realms of the spirit, the human world and nature.

Each of the carefully carved terraces can be seen together with the intricate system of irrigation paths running in between.

The centuries old site offers one of the most striking examples of terraced

agriculture anywhere in the world.Using only hand tools and pre-11th

Century technology, early Balinese terraceformed entire mountain sides to accommodate the growing of Bali’s most important crop.

Tunnels and channels, sometimes many kilometers long, had to be carved out of solid rock to provide irrigation for the crop.

Later in 2012, the world acknowledges its beauty, as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) set The Jatiluwih as a part of Bali’s Subak System.

Whether for agriculture, nature or heritage, Jatiluwih remains a site that should be preserved and must remain sustainable for future generations. Not just Balinese, but the whole world to cherries.

Indonesia has a rich and various kind of cuisine and one of the best dishes is the rendang.

A spicy meat dish which originated from Minangkabau, Sumatra. The easiest way to describe rendang, probably describe as a ‘West Sumatran caramelized beef curry.

The caramelized process is not using sugar, but with coconut milk instead. And the authentic rendang is nothing like curry, the true rendang is the dry one and the color is usually dark brown.

To cook the dried rendang is time consuming; it takes about 4 hours to from boiling to frying with perfect heat. The meat in the spicy coconut milk should be slowly and carefully stirred and turned over without burning or ruining the meat.

By slow cooking, it allows the coconut milk evaporates and the meats absorb the spices perfectly. If cooked properly dried rendang can last from three to fours weeks in room temperature.

Rendang in its best served with ketupat (compressed rice cake) or steamed rice, accompanied with vegetable side dishes of boild cassava leaf or young jackfruit gulai and lado (green chilli pepper sambal).

A single bite of Rendang and as if its explodes with sophisticated flavour within your mouth.

And the best place to find a good rendang is at Padang / Minang restaurant. So, make sure that you try this amazing Indonesian delicacy, Selamat makan.

Indonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point of Merauke. From
