Welcoming...Doctor Marwah

From the AdministratorSeth Gillman

This month may be a good time to give medical thanks to a group of people who could be the hardest working, most under-valued bunch in the health care business: our brothers and sisters who provide care and love in the nursing home. We, your admirers at Passages Hospice, wish you the best for Nursing Home Week.

These people do the real work that gives nursing home residents the best quality of life they can have, considering their conditions, diseases, disabilities and inabilities. These workers are true angels from heaven — they care for those persons who require the most care, who can no longer care for themselves and who cannot go on without their help. They provide comfort and calm in an environment that can be turbid and tumultuous. They endure hard conditions, heavy regulation, low recognition and high pressure.

The residents and patients don’t have any “days off,” so neither do the nursing home staff. Sickness and disabilities have no holidays. The same is true for staff members in those establishments.

I must give special thanks to the staff who works in a nursing home dementia unit. Last week I spoke to one of my aides who is assigned to a facility with such a unit and she said it really makes her appreciate what they do. “It’s hard work. I’m sweating a lot of times,” she said.

We are blessed at Passages Hospice to partner with health care facilities that provide good care. None of us ever hopes to find ourselves in need of such care, because it represents a compromised way of life. But I know that if I ever wind up in one, I will be sure to give great thanks to the health care workers who make my quality of life as decent as it can be.

Even if you have not had reason for nursing home involvement, it is right to give thanks for these unsung heroes, hefting about sometimes pretty helpless folks in a very helpful way. I hope you have a happy and healthful Nursing Home Week.

National Nurses Week in an annual initiative to raise awareness and education about the role nurses play in meeting the health care needs of the American people.

National Nurses Week is sponsored by the American Nurses Association, beginning on May 6th and ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, every year.

Nurses have been named the most trusted profession for their honesty and ethical standards for 9 consecutive years, according to a Gallup poll. That trust is especially important during the final months of a person’s life, and nurses with Passages Hospice always seek to become the patient’s advocate, caregiver and friend.

“You have to be able to put yourself in other peoples’ shoes,” says Passages Hospice Nursing Director Bonnie Fisher, “and value the patient and family as a whole.”

Ways to Give

We’ve Moved!

We celebrated a pre-construction open house at our new office in Bloomington on April 28th. The

McLean County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony and graciously welcomed us to the new location. Families, friends and members of the community toured the office and enjoyed appetizers.

After some updating and construction, the new office will have more meeting space for our staff and a private family conference area. Please feel free to stop by to tour our new home!

Passing It On...Staff gives back

Passages Hospice staff are priveleged to work with wonderful people and in great communities across the state. We're committed to giving back to both local and larger causes to improve ourselves, our company and our communities.

Anita Lostutter has been with Passages since April 2010, and has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in everything she does. When a coworker required an extended leave of absence from his position, Anita stepped in to fulfill not only

her own responsibilties as an LPN but also those of an admissions coordinator.

Anita exemplifies teamwork, integritry, kindness and humility. She goes above and beyond in everything she does, from caring for patients and working with families to filling in for other staff members. Anita's coworkers say that no job is too big or too small for Anita, and that each day she gives all of herself in everything she does. They consider her an inspiring person to be around. "Her positive attitude and smile are infectious, and she always goes above and beyond to help anyone in need. She is the type of person we all look up to and are proud to call a coworker," said Kelly Delbridge, Social Worker.

Passages Hospice Dream Foundation

Agnes Murphy has vivid memories of her grandson's 21st birthday celebration in Las Vegas. But the family trip was just part of the thrill. Agnes loves the lights and glamour of Las Vegas, and the excitement

of the games.

The Passages Hospice Dream Foundation wanted to recreate those special memories when Agnes was the guest of honor at Harrah's Joliet Casino and Hotel on April 27th.

Harrah’s Joliet Casino and Hotel welcomed Agnes for a V.I.P. gaming experience as an honorary member of its Seven Stars club.

Agnes indulged in a complimentary lunch at the casino's restaurant and even tried her luck at her favorite nickel slots.

“We are honored to help recreate one of Agnes’s fondest memories," said Harrah’s Joliet Administrative Assistant Melinda Mackey.

Dinah Miller is the kind of person who was always giving - to her family, to her neighbors and to her community. She was generous with her money, time and love.

"She never thinks of herself," said her son Brian Miller.

Dinah's family, friends and caregivers know that she deserved some personal attention now more than ever, so her community came together to give Dinah the pampering she deserves. Dinah's royal treatment began on a Friday afternoon with a manicure by Fashion Focus salon, and continued through Sunday with a new dress and

makeup in preparation for a night on the town.

Dinah dressed in her best to be chauffered from Rivershores Rehabilitation and Nursing to celebrate with her family. Dinah first stopped by the riverfront to see the ducks and spring flowers blooming in the town she loves, and the evening culminated in a special dinner at Monte's Riverside Inn.

Your passage to care and comfort.

Govenor Quinn's proposed budget cuts of at least 6 percent in Medicaid funds would mean a

$140 million annual reduction in services provided to Illinois nursing home residents.

The cuts could mean the loss of 7,000 senior care jobs and an additional 11,000 jobs in the economy. Passages Hospice stands beside our skilled nursing facility partners as the healthcare field faces this challenging time. The proposed cuts to Medicare funding would be devastating for millions of older Americans, and would seriously change the availability and quality of care in healthcare facilities across the country. We fully support the residents and staff who rely on Medicaid for their health and wellbeing in speaking out against the proposed funding cuts.

SPEAK OUT >> Learn more about the proposed cuts and make your voice heard by clicking here to visit the Healthcare Council of Illinois.
