HONORING OUR 2017 GRADUATES !!
Jeremiah 29:11 says, for surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm
to give you a future with hope. I think this verse speaks volumes to me as I head toward retirement after 35 years serving in ministry. This is a verse
for the future. I know that God will guide us in retirement just like God has guided us all these years of ministry.
This verse also speaks volumes to the people of First Methodist Rockingham after 231 years of serving in ministry. You
have a “future of hope”. Rev. Allen Bingham is the appointed pastor of FUMC and I believe he will guide the church to be a
faithful future in ministry. I know that you will love him and his family just like you have loved us all these years.
I have been your pastor for 8 years. As I reflect on 8 years of ministry, I am encouraged to remember so many high
spiritual moments. I want to share one that is really not a spiritual high moment but one that brought a smile to my face as I
opened the mail one day. Here is the letter.
Good morning. I sure hope this letter brightens your day. I was at an antique shop here and found this old circa 1940 picture card of your beautiful church. It’s an old classic for sure. So I thought to myself, “By golly, I’ll send it back home where it can be appreciated.” Our heritage is important to all of us. Lots of changes, too, over the years, I suppose. Enlarged it will make a nice display. Well I gave $5.00 for it so if you want it for $6.00 or $7.00 or so why that’s sure o.k. Throw in a little postage if you want, too. My wife says if I hear from you I will have to take her to lunch. I am eighty-six years old and still going strong. I like to call my little hobby “a re-distribution of happiness.” Our world sure needs it. Thank you and Godspeed in your work, Lowell Joerg Stockton, CA
I’m happy to announce that I sent him $10.00 and I grin every time I think of the surprised look on his wife’s face as
he shares my letter with her. He probably said to her, “Where are we going for lunch”? It was worth every penny to receive
this darling letter. I placed it in the history folder to be left here at the church.
There are certainly many funny stories in my memory from being here this long. Many I can’t remember and many oth-
ers are for “my ears only.” But, spiritually, I have been blessed far more than I deserve.
The most spiritually uplifting moments center on times of worship. Christmas Eve Candlelight and communion service,
the Ash Wednesday Service, the Maundy Thursday reenactment of the Lord’s; Supper, Baptisms and reception of new members
all seem to have made an indelible mark upon me. I will miss these worshipful times.
It is exciting to think about retirement. But I admit that there is much sadness as I prepare to move. I will miss you.
I will miss the community of the church. Our fellowship is important and meaningful as we gather together as the church of
Jesus Christ. I will miss you all but clearly believe Jeremiah 29:11 for my future and the future of the church.
Mike

Church Family,
We are planning a BBQ Retirement Lunch for Mike and Pat on June 11 after our Worship Service. This will be a great time to share memories and reflect on what their ministry has meant to you. We will also be collecting a Love Offering for them as they begin their retirement journey. If you would like to con-tribute, you may drop your check in the offering plate or by the church office. Please mark your check for the Love Offering.

SONGFEST June 18
On June 18, the Chancel Choir will present a Songfest: “The Majesty and Glory of God”.
As we think about our Father the Almighty, the
Creator and Sustainer of life; it is important that we contemplate what our response should be to Him.
It is with this spirit that the choir hopes to lead the congregation in scripture, narration, unison reading
and song. We hope you can attend and receive a special blessing.

Mike and Members of First United Methodist Church: It is with humility and deepest appreciation that the Williams Family thanks you for all your love and support during Monroe’s hospitalization and recovery. Your visits
and cards and prayers and financial contributions have helped sustain and strengthen us all along the way. God has used you as instruments of love and grace and we have been the beneficiaries of your Christian works. God has worked in miraculous ways to bring recovery to Monroe. He is back at work, still doing rehab and working with physi-cians with the hope that he might regain some use of his left arm. We continue to praise God for returning our son to us and pray for God to give him the strength and courage he needs to adjust to his new normal. We trust that God will help him find his way. Again, thank you so much for your love. Dwight Williams

Dear Church Family: Thank you for all of the calls, cards, many words of support and encouragement, and your prayers for me since my car accident. Recovering has been made easier with all of the love I have felt from FUMC. Please continue to remember me in prayer as I jour-ney along this path to full recovery. Beth McQueen
Dear First United Methodist Church:
Thank you for letting me display my
supplies box in your church and
collect hygiene items. I ended up collecting 714 items in
total. They will benefit many people in this community.
Thank you for all the support.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study
Beginning May 30, Margaret Leak will lead a 5 week study called Half
Truths by Adam Hamilton.
True or false:
1. Everything happens for a reason.
2. God helps those who help themselves.
3. God won’t give you more than you can handle.
4. God said it, I believe it, that settles it.
5. Love the sinner, hate the sin.
All true? Not so fast. We’ve heard these phrases all of our lives, but in
Adam Hamilton’s, Half Truths, you’ll learn that although they capture
some element of truth, when compared to the wisdom found in Scripture,
they’re really just popular sayings. You will be welcomed at 10:00 am
each Tuesday morning in the Chapel. NOTE: We will not meet July 4.
ZOE SUNDAYS are
