Welcome back to Term 2.

attended camp at the end of last term.

As ever, it was a great team adventure.

the introduction of a comprehensive

career guidance service called

report showing potential careers.

News from Humanities Department

World War One Centenary Exhibition

Humanities students in Year 9 and Year 10 History students will be attending an excursion to the Mel-

bourne Museum to view the World War One Centenary Exhibition at the Melbourne Museum. The ex-

hibition is very important given the Centenary of the Gallipoli Landings that are being commemorated

this Saturday 25th April. It is a poignant time in Australian history, which has been a focus for both

groups in Humanities this term.

The exhibition contains many artefacts direct from the Imperial War Museum in London that will be on

display overseas for the first time. Students will have the opportunity to view over 350 artefacts as well

as be immersed in multimedia displays and stories of World War One.

Year 9 will attend the museum on Thursday 7th of May and Year 10 History on Thursday 14th of May.

Economics Competition

On the 7th of May, a selected group of Year 12 Economics students will sit the prestig-

ious University of New South Wales Economics competition. We hope to repeat the

great success last year in which students were placed in the top 2% of entrants! Good

The Age Careers Expo

Caulfield Racecourse 10am – 4pm Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May

This is the largest Careers Expo in Australia with over 170 exhibitors including university, TAFE, private

providers and the Defence Force recruiting team. Admission is $10 per person,$25.00 for families (3 or

It is around this time of the semester when all students will need to complete their project task for

mathematics. This assessment involves students completing an extended task that explores a branch of

mathematics. The aim of the project is to develop in students the capacity to write mathematical

arguments and present them in a coherent manner.

Around 50% of the grade for the project is based on presentation and communication primarily with the

purpose to encourage students to use graphing tools and word processing features to present a final

submission that is eye catching, concise and easy to follow. The mathematics and results are important

though communication is the key attribute we are looking to enhance. For parents, please take the

opportunity to discuss the project with your child and check through the presentation to make sure it

addresses the criteria. The Semester Project (which equates to 10% of the Semester Grade) is a task that

is done twice a year and the skills developed throughout the junior years assist in Year 12, when

students are required to submit an Exploration Project that form 20% of their final IB grade. Currently,

Year 12 students are deep in the middle of writing their Exploration Projects. The first draft is due on

Monday the 27th of April.

Just a reminder, that Mr Gregory’s revision

classes are currently taking place on Wednesday

evenings from 6.45pm to 8.30pm. You will

receive a set of past exam paper revision

questions upon attending. Mr Gregory will run through these and answer any questions required. These

classes are available for all Year 11 and 12 students. Topics that will be covered over the next few

weeks include: differentiation and integration.

Year 10 Morrisby Careers Evaluation

About Morrisby

Founded by John Morrisby in 1967, The Morrisby Organisation are leaders in the supply and development

of assessment systems and services to careers advice and guidance professionals and to HR specialists

across a wide range of commercial settings.

The Morrisby Organisation is probably best known for the Morrisby Profile, an advanced version of the

Differential Test Battery, originally produced by John Morrisby in the 1950s. During these early

foundations in psychometric test publishing, the organisation built an impressive track record in

developing a number of tests and assessments for specialised industrial recruitment.

The organisation then capitalised on these specialist skills and experience in assessment

design, by harnessing computer technology to further pioneer the development of

advanced systems for guidance and assessment. Over the last 20 years the Morrisby

Guidance Service has evolved into the most widely used assessment system used in

guidance today, with schools and colleges throughout the UK and overseas now using the

Morrisby Profile as a key part of their careers guidance programme.

Our Participation

For the first time the Year 10s (excluding students in Intensive English) will have the opportunity to take

the Morrisby Careers Evaluation. This is used by a large number of schools in both Victoria and overseas.

A simple careers interest questionnaire will also be completed.

Following the testing, the Careers Coordinator will meet each student and discusses their strengths,

abilities and possible career directions. They receive a detailed personal report and ongoing access to the

Morrisby website. This information will be very useful for students and parents when the process for IB

subject selection begins later this term. The testing will be held on Wednesday 22 April, starting at 8.50am

sharp and finishing at lunchtime. Normal Period 5 and 6 classes will follow.

Feedback from Examination Room

The Morrisby testing went very well on 22nd April at TKIS. No surprise that the students were brilliant.

Clearly taking it seriously and trying their best. Punctual and listened quietly to all instructions so the test

ran perfectly to schedule. And with lots of humour too – ‘name as many things as you can that are white

and can be eaten’, drew lots of laughs.

The House Athletics Carnival was a great way to finish term 1. The weather wasn’t great, however, this

didn’t seem to bother the students. Nearly everybody participated in the 1.6km cross country and most

students participated in several more athletics and novelty events throughout the day. Well done to all stu-

dents and teachers for their efforts. This year was a very closely contested competition with only 17 points

separating 1st and 2nd place.

At the end of the day the final result was:

1st Green Kookaburra 1105 points

2nd Yellow Platypus 1088 points

3rd Blue Koala 1056 points

4th Red Echidna 875 points

The next Athletics event is the interschool competition for year 7-12 students on April 28 at Meadowglen

Athletics Stadium in Epping. Our students will be competing against 9 other schools in

our division. Good luck to the 25 students representing TKIS.

Glory for Green House

Green house’s effort on sports day was

extraordinary. Both Leon and I were

extremely proud to be representing

Green as their captains throughout the

day and we would like to extend a

huge thank you to everyone who

stepped in when Leon and I were

doing events or frantically searching

for people. It was an amazing group

effort. It was extremely close

competition in the end (17 point win!)

and I apologise to all those who were

subjected to my competitive yelling in

the dry ski races after the tiny 8 point lead we held was announced. Finally, of course, thank you to all

the teachers, particularly Mr Wittmer who helped all of the house captains get prepared for the day and

the other houses for their sportsmanship and close competition on the day!

Blue House

Our sports day last term was such a success, everyone in blue house was so enthusiastic and keen to do

their best in each of their events, and even though we came third, we still had great team spirit.

We found our strength in the best-dressed competition, with top 3 all being from blue house, which just

goes to show that even though we aren’t the best at sport we can still compete in style! Toufie and I were

very impressed by everyone’s willingness to give a hand and to encourage other competitors on the day.

Thanks everyone for making it so fantastic!

Yellow House

Despite the rather gloomy weather, the athletics day in term 1 was a huge success. Yellow house came

second overall for the day, and James and I are so proud of house's efforts. It was great to see almost our

whole school participating in the cross country event that started the day off, and it really displayed the

great sense of house spirit that our school has. Throughout the whole day all of the houses were partici-

pating and encouraging one another, which really made it a pleasant day for all of us. Everyone looked

fantastic in their house colours, and we are excited for the next sports day (Go Yellow!)

Red House

Once again red house did extremely well for sports day, however the overall rank is not a good reflec-

tion of our hard work. Despite coming 4th, it is our pleasure to announce that we have specialized in the

egg and spoon race, coming first in every race. Being optimistic for next sports day it is clear that we

will move up the ranks as there is no way lower. We hope that faith is upheld in the near future.

Junior School Production

The students involved in the Junior School Production are rehearsing hard and getting ready for their

performance of Once Upon A Mattress next Month. All performers give off an enormous amount of

enthusiasm each week and we are sure it will translate on stage. Once Upon A Mattress is a fractured

fairytale of The Princess and the Pea. Kyle Laffan aka Sir Harry says “It’s great to see everyone in

character, it’s a very amusing show.”

Once Upon A Mattress will be on show in Room 46 at TKIS on the

22nd of May at 7pm and on the 23rd of May at 2pm. Hope to see you

there!

If anyone has any medieval/fairytale type costumes that are size

suitable for Grade 3-7 or are able to be adapted to this size please send

them along to Ms Treanor.

Folio Preparation Courses Mid-Year School Holidays

RMIT’s portfolio preparation courses are

intensive practical courses held in the school

holidays. Although targeted to final year

secondary students, many students do take these

short courses in Year 11 to assist with their

hands on technique for their art/design course.

Social Issues Education

On Tuesday, 21st of April special guests from NEXUS Primary Health, Victoria Police and Ambulance

Victoria were invited to hold sessions with our Year 9, 10, 11 and 12 students to discuss Drug & Alcohol

use, Respectful Relationships, Social Media and Cyber bullying. The sessions were organised by our

TKIS School Counsellor Trudy Lavoipierre in liaison with NEXUS Primary Health. The information

during the first session allowed our students to be given an insight to the effects of drug and alcohol and

the poor decision making that both can lead to.

Social media has become increasingly prevalent within our society as people conduct themselves in acts

of cyber bullying from behind their computer screens. The second session gave our students some

education on the key issues regarding respectful relationships at school, at home and within friendship

groups. There is a need for students to be made aware that their actions online can have very detrimental

effects toward other people. These sessions will become an annual event in the future.

A Grade Debate

I am in the A Grade team and was first speaker for our team. Our topic was ‘That Indigenous

communities should be allowed to administer traditional justice’ and we were on the negative side. The

affirmative team from Viewbank College, suggested that the number of Indigenous people in Australian

jails could be reduced by allowing them to administer their own system of justice. We suggested an

alternative solution to the issue, proposing that increased levels of education, healthcare and employment

opportunities for Indigenous people, would reduce the crime rate among this group. We asserted that a

single justice system in which everyone is equal before the law is a source of unity and that operating two

completely different systems would divide our nation. I also spoke about the violence and consequences

that arise from using Indigenous traditional justice as punishments include duelling and spearing. Our

second speaker, Christian, persuasively pointed out that the implementation of a dual justice system

would present many problems such as deciding which system individuals

would be tried under. He also spoke about how a separate system for

Indigenous people would promote racism. Our third speaker, Jonathon,

excellently rebutted the affirmative team’s points and concluded our

arguments. After receiving feedback from the adjudicator, we were delighted

to hear we had won the debate.

News from Boarding Department

Here we are already term two, we have open another boarding house and welcomed seven new students

from Korea, Thailand, China, and Japan. We are looking forward to a year 10 girl who will be joining us

on Monday, our family is getting bigger and bigger.

Our activities program has been a great success thanks to Kate, on average around thirty students are tak-

ing advantage of the program of a Sunday afternoon they have played Basketball, made Poppies for An-

zac Day and played indoor games. Next weekend will be a table tennis tournament and then we are or-

ganising a trip to the Zoo next month.

The Boys in Golf house which we open celebrated with a B.B.Q. get together last Saturday. Photos were

taken with lots of laughter as everyone wanted a turn to cook. By popular demand the B.B.Q. will be

staying there for future use.

Year 12 students are all back and studying hard, heating is on and the houses are cosy.

We had 37 students stay with us for the holidays, they were all tired after returning from camp so had a

few days of sleeping in. Followed by a big day out shopping at Chadstone and a B.B.Q. at the beach.

Students kept the St Kilda locals entertained by playing our usual no rule game of keeping a number of

balls in the air while a few helped myself and Mr Archer cook the B.B.Q. A great day was had by all,

followed by pizza for supper.

a information session with some of our Year 12 and Year 11 students.

Year 12 Camp Report

Now that we are in year 12, everything takes on a different role. School becomes a time to get home-

work, and the weekends become a time to catch up on that homework. Holidays become a time to rejoice

in not getting any more homework for a few weeks, and suddenly 1 AM seems an early bedtime. So of

course, our school camp takes on a completely different meaning. Study, study, study.

A large part of our week down at Ace-Hi Ranch on the Mornington Peninsula was spent doing prac work

for some students, and then dedicating a lot of our time to working through IAs and EEs. Biology and

Environmental Systems and Societies Students had the opportunity to do two practicals, including a day

in Queenscliff examining the sand dunes, and a day in Cape Schanck detailing rock pools. We were very

fortunate to have sunny weather the whole week, however it did make for hot work down at the sand

dunes.

Although this was a study camp, there was still plenty of opportunity for us to take part in what will be

our last High School camp activities ever. We were able to participate in the good old traditional camp

activities. Things such as the flying fox, giant swing, rock climbing an archery. Those who opted for it

also had the chance to go for a leisurely horse ride around the nearby countryside.

It was a very nice change of pace after the craziness of our first term as year 12s. To just have the oppor-

tunity to spend some time with our mates, get a bit of work done and just relax was a well needed break

for all of us. It will only get more stressful from here, but as a

cohort we should be all able to get through it.

Year 11 Camp Report

Kangaroobie Camp was an amazing experience! The main highlights included, a visit to the Twelve

Apostles, a night walk, bush dancing and a hike to Princetown beach. Most of us hadn’t seen the Twelve

Apostles before and few hadn’t even heard of them! Bush Dancing was completely different from what

we had expected. You’d think it would be something to do with traditional dances, but we did a duck

dance instead! It was good fun! The night walk was very informative and we learnt a lot about the place,

its special location and a bit of history. The area is one of the special places from where you can see an-

other galaxy and is also a place where a lot of shipwrecks are known to have taken place. On the last day

we were presented with a series of challenges including an obstacle course. We also got to feed animals

and learn lots about them. Hiking to the beach was exhausting but was worth the challenge. We enjoyed

camp heaps, got to know others better and all agreed that it was definitely a camp to remember!

Year 9 and 10 Camp Report

On the first Sunday of the Easter holidays, all of the TKIS year 9 and 10 students made their way to

Melbourne airport to board their flight to the Gold coast. As it was a very chilly morning, many

students rugged up to stay warm at 5:30 in the morning. After an hour or so at the airport, the plane

took off to a beautiful sunrise, and many students took this as an opportunity to test their photography

skills. Without delay the group headed straight from the airport to Wet’n’Wild Water world where we

were let loose to explore the crazy waterpark. Some took this as an opportunity to relax in the warm

midmorning sun, while many others braved the wild side of the park, with the Aqua loop, the

Kamikaze, and Blackout among the more popular rides. After everyone had had their fill of fun or

relaxation, we headed to Mermaid waters hotel where we received our luggage and Key cards. Some

people didn’t hesitate to head straight out to the very nice pool in the hotel vicinity, whereas others just

took the time to make themselves at home before heading down to dinner.

The next day we went to Dreamworld after a breakfast of cereal and toast (No hot food unfortunately!).

Some were rather hesitant after seeing the dreaded Buzz Saw in action; however most people had a

great time and a great experience going on the various rides. Some endured the 119m high Giant Drop,

Wipe-out, and the dizzying Cyclone while others went on more tolerable rides such as the bumper cars

and the Tailspin. After a tiring but thrilling day we all bussed back to the hotel. We had dinner as

normal, but afterwards there was a special treat - Maddy Lezon had the whole group sing to her to

celebrate her 16th Birthday, and many students enjoyed cake as an extra luxury.

On Tuesday 31st of March, we travelled to the beach in our groups to have surfing lessons. We were

provided with surfboards and rash vests, and the instructors taught us about the safety precautions and

the correct way to surf. It was fun to get out in the water and try and catch some waves. Whether you

managed to catch a few waves or not, most people had a really great time! Some of the groups who

went surfing earlier in the day went and spent some time at the Robina shopping complex.

The next day we all went to SeaWorld. It was a great experience to see the wide variety of marine life

housed there. Many people also had fun on the rides there and some people even had a ride in the

gondola, which took people over the theme park, and gave them a bird’s eye view of the park. The

weather was a little disappointing on this day, so we met at lunch time and decided to stay only until

2:30pm. After we left, we went back to the hotel and we had the option to stay at the hotel and relax or

watch TV, go to the pool or go down to the beach. Despite, the disappointing weather I think everyone

still had a nice day.

On our last day in the Gold Coast, we packed up our belongings in the morning and headed off to

Surfer’s Paradise to do some shopping. At the airport, we bought lunch and waited for our plane to

begin boarding, it was delayed approximately 15 minutes. So many students were tired, lots of people

slept on the plane and bus ride home. We arrived back at TKIS around 8pm that night. Everyone was

really tired, but we had a really good time!

The thing I enjoyed most from camp was Dream World because there was lots of thrilling rides.

The Queensland camp was awesome! We had a great bunch of kids and teachers, it was good to see that

the teachers got involved as well. I would like to personally congratulate Mr Edmunds and Miss Siv for

The Charnwood camp pushed us to our limits! Activities included steep mountain biking, sinking rafts and

scaling the heights of rock faces. Overall a great experience. - Tim Spain

Year 5 and 6 Camp Report

On the 30th of March – 2nd of April, Year 5 & 6 went to Phillip Island for camp. We stayed for 3 nights at

The Colonnades in the adventure resort. We had many exciting activities planned for us including a visit to

the penguins, Amaze ’n’ Things , Panny’s Chocolate Factory.

Day 1 was great where we started at the beach where we had lunch and watched the pelican feeding. We

then drove to PIAR (Phillip Island Adventure Resort) and settled in. we were then split into 3 groups; the

Pelicans, the Seals and the Penguins.

Some of the activities were the giant swing where you were attached to a rope in a harness and hauled up to

20ft high, then you pulled a string in front of you and you went for a swing. The best thing about it was the

small random feeling of the free fall. The next one is the flying fox, where you were put in harness and sent

down the fox 210m. Archery was a very popular activity. You used a modern style Robin Hood bow. The

circotron was also a hit. It had three rings, the first one let you go back and forward, the second side to side,

and the third let you do 360s. Raft making was a huge hit. You had 25 minutes (including 5 minutes plan-

ning) to build a raft with 8 pipes, 4 boards of wood and 15 lengths of rope. You had to try and make it as

stable as possible but some rafts collapsed including two boy groups who ended up in the water, yet no girls

did! We also did dodge ball, swim spa and Smiths Beach on the third day. We went to the chocolate facto-

ry where you got to make your own chocolate and the boardwalk on the 4th day.

We all had a ball.

Year 5 and 6 Camp Report

On the 30th of March, year 5/6 set off for the long drive to Phillip Island…

Our first stop was at San Remo beach which is beside the bridge that connects Phillip Island to main-

land Victoria. We ate our lunch, and then we walked down the beach to watch the pelicans feeding.

There were so many pelicans, imagine them trying to fight for just one fish!

We hopped back on the bus and finally we arrived at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort (PIAR). This

was the place we were going to stay and do most of the amazing activities that were planned for us.

First we were introduced to Phil, our camp manager and Seb, our main activity organizer. We were

also introduced to the Cape Barren Geese. These large birds never live alone and will always be found

with a partner. They will also happily walk into your cabin if the door is left open!

Once we had gotten into our cabins, organised who would be sleeping in which bed and unpacked

some clothes, we went back to the main room. This was where we split up into our 3 activity groups;

Seals; Penguins and Pelicans.

Over the next few days some activities we did were…

The giant swing was an activity that everyone enjoyed. The aim was for everyone to haul the person in

the harness up to a chosen height and, the person in the harness will pull a rope that will release them

to start swinging.

Year 5 and 6 Camp Report

Another popular activity was the circotron. It was basically three rings that you were able to control by

shifting your body weight to make you do flips and 360 turns!

The twin flying fox was an awesome ride where two people were harnessed up and clipped to a cord each,

they jumped off a 10m high platform and sailed across to the end.

Archery was one of the activities that required the most concentration. After 8 practices each, Seb held a

competition to see who the most accurate archer was.

The camp also had a relaxing swim spa which everyone went in in their groups.

At the end of each day we went to the dining room where we had all of our meals. The food was fabulous!

Some of the activities we did outside the camp were…

We went to the Penguin Parade to see the penguins waddling across the shore. The penguins only come out

of the ocean at night, so it was dark and cold.

Another night we went to Amaze ‘n’ Things where we went through many exiting rooms that had puzzles

and illusions inside. There was a confusing outdoor maze and a fun mini-golf course.

On the last day, we packed up our things and left them to be put on the bus. Once that was done, we all got

on the bus and went to our last stop, Panny’s chocolate factory! The chocolate was delicious and all the year

5/6’s put together was enough to lift one tonne of chocolate!

Everyone had fun and overall, it was definitely the best camp ever!

Year 3 and 4 Camp Report

On the 27 March Year 3 and 4 went on a special camp to CYC City.

Firstly, we went on the bus to the wonderful city and travelled to Polly Woodside.

Afterwards, the whole group went to Captain Cook’s cottage. We split into two groups and learnt some

facts about Captain Cook’s ship and his family.

Next, the Year 3’s and 4’s explored the CYC camp and the anticipated announcement for who and where

we were sleeping!

Some people joined in for a little game with Mrs. Daniells which was awesome and great.

Soon, the very excited Year 3’s and 4’s went candy shopping and had a marvellous walk around the city.

Eventually, we had a relaxing movie night with warm hot chocolate laying on comfy cushions.

The next day all cabins were cleaned and we headed off to the zoo after breakfast.

When we arrived at the zoo we all got spilt into groups and walked around meeting animals and learning

about them. My favourite part was looking in the gift shop.

We loaded back on the bus and finally arrived back at Kilmore.

I couldn’t wait to give my parents a hug.
