S PEAK UP!NEARLY 29,000 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ADULT LEADERS WERE CHALLENGED TO SPEAK UP AGAINST INJUSTICE DURING THIS SUMMER’S MOVE TOUR.

Page 3: The Kingdom Worker Connection Sept 2015

I was standing in the cafeteria during lunchtime at a week of CIY MIX, fully engaged in a conversation with an adult leader, when I sensed there was somebody who wanted my attention.

As I turned around I noticed two Jr. high boys waiting very patiently. As I focused my attention on them, one of the boys said, “We wanted to say Thank You!” And then he shyly dropped his head. “Thank you for what?” I asked them. In unison they said, “Thank you for MIX!”

Their youth worker proceeded to explain that this was the first time their youth group had been to an event like MIX and that both of the boys had placed heart stickers on the door outside the auditorium, signifying first-time decisions for Christ. They were two of 840 Jr. high students who made first-time decisions for Christ at MIX this summer, and 1,260 high school students did the same at their weeks of MOVE!

If you receive the Kingdom Worker Connection, it’s because you and/or your church partners with Christ In Youth by sending students and providing financial support. As a result of your faithfulness, more than 73,000 are projected to attend a CIY event or trip in 2015.

We praise God for your faithful partnerships. And we step forward in faithfulness at this CRITICAL MOMENT in CIY’s life, accepting a challenge that God has put before us. CIY has seen such a growth in attendance that every program has needs for expansion to new locations in 2016 and 2017.

The estimated cost of expansion is $2.35 million. More than $1 million has already been received and has been applied to expansion efforts, specifically to the MIX program. CIY must also expand its facilities to meet the needs of growth, with an additional price tag of $2.15 million. We desperately need three facilities:

• A workshop/warehouse – Land has already been purchased at the CIY headquarters in Joplin, MO. Drawings are being finalized for this facility. Estimated cost of this project (land and building) is $550,000 – $250,000 of which has already been allocated through giving. Remaining cost: $300,000

• Remodel current garage/storage to office space, and expansion of lobby – CIY’s headquarters in Joplin is out of room. This remodel will allow for 20 new cubicles and two meeting rooms. Remodel costs: $350,000

• New Training Center/Video Production Studio – Our film department creates more than 125 video elements a year in support of programming and marketing needs. Several of these films are now resources for churches. The film used this summer for MOVE has won first place in the Justice Film Festival and was recently accepted as one of the entrants into the Heartland Film Festival. Project cost: $1.5 million.

Would you or your church consider making a significant financial commitment to CIY? Please see the attached envelope and prayerfully consider responding to this opportunity to advance the ministry of CIY.

I have a huge heart for going and loving on the kids that get to go.”

Other youth leaders had similar experiences with their students this summer. Keith Parker from Hazelwood Christian Church in Clayton, Indiana, said he had a student cancel at the last minute, leaving a place open for an incom-ing freshman to invite a friend. That student – who agreed to come almost at the last second – ended up being baptized at MOVE; something that his family had been praying about for months.

Steve Vercrumba from Bloomington, Indiana, also baptized students at his group’s week of MOVE. This is the third year in a row that his church has attended MOVE, and each year the impact has been such that students return home raving about their experience and encouraging

Take Nancy Coughlin, for instance. When she first started working at Christ’s Church of the Valley in Arizona, she joined a worship team for weeks of MOVE in Colorado and reflects that she was “amazed at how awesome it was.” Her son, Jonah Coughlin, attended MOVE two years ago, where he commit-

ted to a life of full-time ministry. He currently is majoring in Christian studies at a Christian college. This year Nancy joined CCV for the third year in a row at a MOVE conference in southern California. She said the impact CIY has had on her and her son is something she wants to share with as many students as possible.

“I never had that kind of opportu-nity in high school,” she said. “I remember crying the first night (that she attended MOVE). I was a little sad that my high school life wasn’t impacted like that. So now

their friends to attend the next year. In the first year his church attended they brought six students; the second year they brought 17 and this year there were 28 students.

In total, CIY saw 28,678 students and adult leaders at its 31 MOVE events across the country. Of those, 1,260 made first-time decisions for Christ, 5,004 made decisions of repentance, 2,086 made commitments to vocational ministry and 9,535 made commitments for Kingdom work.

According to Eric Epperson, one of MOVE’s program directors, the emphasis on the life of Daniel served as the perfect example to this generation of how to live daily for Christ.

“Daniel’s life proved to be a perfect story to encourage students to live faithfully and to remember that God is here no matter what,” Epperson said. “We believe that this was the narrative God wanted to use to remind students how close He is to them. We saw firsthand, time and time again, God calling students to live shrewd and innocent lives. He whispered in their ears, reminding them that He is with them in the furnaces of life. He implored them to speak up for justice and stand up together. And He sent them out from MOVE, armed with the knowledge that His Spirit will be with them no matter where He calls them. Daniel isn’t just a story for VBS – it’s a blueprint for living a life of Kingdom work.”

LANCE STOCKTON FOUND HIMSELF IN A FAMILIAR SITUATION ON THE THIRD NIGHT OF MIX. SITTING IN AN AUDITORIUM ALONGSIDE A HANDFUL OF HIS STUDENTS, THE YOUTH MINISTER FROM WHITE RIVER CHRISTIAN CHURCH WAS TAKEN BACK 16 YEARS TO A DIFFERENT CIY CONFERENCE.

He was a student at the time, listening to Jeff Walling – one of CIY’s trustees and a speaker on CIY stages for many years. The message at the time was one of salvation, and Stockton said it was

the first time he fully committed his life to Christ.

This year, as he sat next to his students and watched the awe on their faces as Walling wove a simi-lar tale of salvation, he was over-whelmed by the awesome work of God. At the end of Walling’s message this year, students were invited to make first-time com-mitments for Christ – and many of Stockton’s students did just that.

“Truth is more real than your feelings,” Stockton said. “That’s really relevant for Jr. high students

right now. This message helps them to identify that and separate their feelings from the truth, and they’re responding to that in the best way possible. It’s been amaz-ing to see the bonding that has happened during this week – to see them all coming into MIX with all their differences, but at the end of the week all coming together.”

According to Taylor Brown, MIX director, all of the elements of a week of MIX are intentionally created to help youth groups experience God’s definition of community – from small group studies to large-group games to energetic corporate worship experiences.

“The MIX team is both humbled and thrilled over what God has accomplished this summer,” he said. “We got to see students

baptized in swimming pools. We heard stories of students learning to love those around them. Youth ministers have told us that students began their weeks saying Jesus wasn’t real and ended their weeks worshipping Him. We can’t wait to hear what else God does through the resources MIX provided students and youth ministers to continue their journey beyond the event. All glory to Him.”

This was MIX’s fourth year as a CIY event, and the program continued to see a climb in at-tendance, much as it has each year since it began in 2012. This year saw nearly 6,600 students

and adult leaders – an increase of approximately 2,500 over the previous year. Most impor-tantly, 840 students made first-time decisions for Christ at MIX this year, while an additional 1,238 made decisions of repen-tance and 4,784 made commit-ments for Kingdom work.

Plans are already under way to expand MIX in the summer of 2016 to more locations. The program will also be launching a new website on Oct. 1, which is also the first day for registrations for 2016.

Some dates and locations for next year’s tour are already online at www.ciy.com/mix.

ministries at Colonial Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, who brought a group of students to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a week of Engage. “Service is best in relationships. As teenagers it’s kind of all about them, and it’s good to make it not about them – to make it about someone else. Jesus served and he taught His disciples to do likewise. We need to teach our students the same so that they will capture a heart for serving others.”

That’s exactly the purpose of CIY’s Engage programs – training

students to become Kingdom workers by connecting them with missional leaders, global Kingdom work and cultural intelligence. Reck’s students, for instance, applied their physical acts of Kingdom work to a variety of projects in and around schools throughout Tulsa. In addition to meeting some of the school staff at their work sites, they also got to meet with people like Terry Hozhabri (pictured below) – one of the co-founders of a ministry in

Tulsa called Project Elf that helps the Tulsa School District with school supplies, special projects and even clothes for children.

“I feel like God wants us to do something good together,” Hozhabri told the Colonial Presbyterian students during a lunch break one day. “He’s just waiting for us to be ready. It never starts big – it starts with one thing and God is waiting for somebody to act on it.”

A group of students from First Christian Church of North Vernon, Indiana, learned this lesson first-hand when they joined CIY Engage for a trip to Washington, D.C. The fo-cus of the trip was evangelism outreach, and the group was able to teach VBS lessons in a poverty-stricken area.

“The trip was a complete game-changer for me and for several of my youth,” said Angee Leeds, First Christian’s youth leader. “We live in rural Southern Indiana, where we tend to be pretty protected from the realization of urban poverty and all the happenings of the inner city. We were told that we were going to a poverty-stricken area, and that’s exactly where we went. We cleaned up the area that was riddled with broken glass and debris and then we laid down tarps for the children to sit upon. We found great joy when the children responded to the hands-on activities and games.”

Ariel Galliher was one of the high school students who traveled to D.C. She said she felt God calling her to specific vocational ministry throughout her experience.

“I fell in love with the kids of the Woodland Housing Project in inner-city D.C.,” she said. “I realized that children just like them are a part of how God is calling me to serve. The entire trip made me realize that faith is about so much more than doing service projects or helping someone out – it’s also about how I present myself in front of people and the words I say and the ac-tions I take throughout my day-to-day life. Our Engage trip to Washington D.C. changed my perspective on faith and action and showed me my passion and my calling.”

KINGDOM WORKERS ENGAGETHIS SUMMER ENGAGE LAUNCHED A CAMPAIGN CALLED “KINGDOM WORKERS ENGAGE,” ENCOURAGING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO ENGAGE THEIR FINANCES, SKILLS, PRAYERS AND ACTS OF SERVICE FOR THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

IMPACTING OTHERS FOR CHRISTA GROUP OF STUDENTS REPRESENTING CHURCHES FROM ALL OVER

THE U.S. JOINED CIY ENGAGE FOR A SHORT-TERM TRIP TO ZAMBIA THIS SUMMER, WORKING WITH ORPHANAGES, AMONG OTHER THINGS.

The response to this challenge has been incredible – with a 50 percent increase in applications for interna-tional trips over this time last year.

According to Rachel Grindle, senior director of Engage, training Kingdom workers to engage other cultures is taking on a new level of intentionality within the team. One of the best examples of this was the trip to Zambia this summer, which was led by Grindle and her husband.

A group of 12 from churches all over the country traveled with CIY to Zambia for 10 days. The ma-jority of their experience involved working alongside Seeds of Hope International – an organization that works to provide solutions to the water crisis in Africa.

Grindle said the group also visited three orphanages and led VBS activities. An intentional process of awareness throughout the trip helped students

understand what it means to see other cultures through God’s eyes.

“It starts by helping them to get past the mentality that America is the best and everybody should be like America,” Grindle said. “Most students who travel to other countries for the first time have thoughts such as, ‘This place isn’t America and it needs to become like America.’ As they experience more of the culture and the people, it can become very easy for that thought process to change to ‘This place has it figured out and they love Jesus more than we do.’ But if we’re intentional about our training, we’re leading them through this progression of thoughts so that by the end of the trip they’ve discovered that both countries have really good things and that God is present in both.”

Grindle said much of this awareness comes through conversations and debrief sessions at the end of each day. She said the

students who traveled to Zambia responded to Christ’s call on their lives with a willingness to partner in Kingdom work in their own homes and communities. One student she pointed to as an example is Brad Loeffler, a college student from Indian Creek Christian Church.

“Zambia was the only real time that I had deeply impacted a person’s life,” Loeffler said.

“I prayed to God about how I could bring that feeling home to Indianapolis. And so at church when I got home this random lady came up to me and told me that she was looking for volunteers for a program where I would help tutor youth who live at or below the poverty level and show them the love of Jesus through worship and Bible study. And so I signed up! I feel like my life truly has meaning again since I’ve left Zambia. I have so much joy because of Zambia and I can feel my heart go out to people in need so much more now.”

MADE FOR GOOD

CIY’s mission is to amplify Christ’s call on students’ lives to be Kingdom workers – to help them understand that they are MADE FOR GOOD.

CIY communicates this message of hope each year to more than 73,000 students attending nearly 100 events and mission trips, and to thousands more via resources designed specifically for the local church. Every CIY event, trip and resource is designed age-intentionally to impact students.

When they understand that they’re made for good work in God’s Kingdom, it affects every aspect of their lives. They go on to become leaders of churches, communities and government. It is vitally important that every student hears the message and has the opportunity to live for Christ.

We are extremely grateful for the ongoing support Christ In Youth has received from churches, individuals, corporations and foundations in the ministry’s 45-year history. We’ve been able to reach hundreds of thousands of students and their leaders with the Gospel message.

All that we are – all that we can be – MADE FOR GOOD.

“FOR WE ARE GOD’S

HANDIWORK, CREATED IN

CHRIST JESUS TO DO GOOD

WORKS, WHICH GOD PREPARED

IN ADVANCE FOR US TO DO.”
