    Missio Dei by Pastor Patrick

    Looking Forward to Lent?

While it seems like we just got done with Christmas and some of us are still dealing with the

remnants of the holidays in our homes, the season of Lent is just around the corner. On February 10,

many will gather in worship places like Christ the King to be reminded of their own mortality with the

marking of ashes on their forehead during Ash Wednesday worship services. Are you looking forward to

    Lent?

Lent is not the kind of season that excites the average Christian. However, there are a lot of things to

look forward to this Lent. This season in the church has some awesome traditions that many appreciate.

The soup supper on Ash Wednesday itself is one of my favorites. Having the opportunity to sample from

so many different delicious crocks of soup is a tradition that I hold near and dear. Another thing I enjoy

is the solemnity of the Ash Wednesday services themselves. The seriousness with which most folks

receive the ashes upon their forehead gives greater significance to the gift of Holy Communion that we

celebrate later in the service. It sets the stage for even the casual believer to understand that God is up to

    something big here.

We will once again participate in the Round Robin Preaching Series with pastors from area Lutheran

churches this year. Having the chance to hear from different voices and experiencing different preaching

styles is something that many in our pews enjoy during Lent. Instead of character portrayals this year, we

will be basing our sermon series off of a book written by Rachel Held Evans called Searching for Sunday:

loving, leaving, and finding the church. Held Evans is a millennial who has a deep appreciation for God's

church on earth even though she hasn't always felt like it properly represents the church Christ had in

mind. Our preaching partners will each base their message off a different section in her book which she

structures following the seven sacraments of the Catholic church. Confession will be the focus of Ash

Wednesday, and after hearing the five other topics, we will wrap up with Communion as our Maundy

Thursday emphasis. We will have the books available if you would like to purchase them.

As you enter the Lenten season this year, I encourage you to enjoy those things that you appreciate

about Lent, but maybe take it one step farther. Try to identify a spiritual discipline to engage in these 40

days. This could be the old traditional habit of giving something up for the season or it might be trying

something new instead. Maybe this year you want to try setting up a brief devotional time to begin each

morning. Maybe this year you want to journal daily about a way that you saw God active in your life that

day. Maybe it's as simple as reading a chapter of Scripture or taking a nature walk daily to appreciate

God's creation. No matter what you choose, please don't do it out of a sense of coercion or obligation. I

encourage you to engage in a way that lifts your spirits and brings you closer to God. As you spend more

time with God, you will experience God's love for you and no doubt want to share that love with others.

May God's richest blessings be with you this Lent as we move toward the cross of Christ and his glorious

    resurrection!

recitals. Recitalists will feature classical piano music from various composers. All are welcome to attend. A

free will offering will be received.

Our next Faith in Motion worship services are Wednesday, February 3 and Sunday, February 7. Come and

join Jonah on his journey as he first tries to run away and then follows God’s command. Hear about God’s

never-ending compassion and consider how we might respond with our own acts of compassion. A special

loose change offering will be collected to be used toward a Community Fish Farm sponsored by ELCA

Good Gifts. A Faith in Motion worship is aimed at children and their families, but people of all ages are

welcome and encouraged to attend. We invite you to participate as little or as much as seems right for you.

A light pancake breakfast will be served following the 9:30 service on February 7.

    Circle of Hope Update

Ambassador, Amy Olsen if you have questions.

    New Member Orientation—Spring 2016

Over the past several years, the Circle of Hope has been working to fine-tune our support of homeless

young people. We do this by supporting The Reach, the Lutheran Social Services drop-in center for

homeless and at-risk youth in the Mankato area. Thanks to the generosity of our good and faithful CTK

support, the needs of this group are being addressed. CTK’s Circle of Hope will continue four initiatives

per year, each focusing on a different area of need and contributing to the mission of The Reach:

December Advent Brunch: 100% of this money goes to general operating expenses.

February Heart of the Home: Collecting items that young people need to set up an apartment.

May Undie Sunday: Collecting new underwear, socks, personal care items, and diapers.

November Step Up To the Plate: Purchasing food packs that are nutritious and easy to prepare for cli-

    ents of The Reach.

. A sincere thanks to Christ the King for your continued support in this ministry. Please continue to keep . .

. The Reach and our homeless youth in your prayers.

With Jesus in the Prayer Gym

As we experience the coldest months of the year, please keep in mind Christ the King’s winter weather policy. All church events will be cancelled and the building will close on any day that District 77 closes or lets out early due to weather conditions.

    Winter Weather Policy

Jesus taught us to pray: Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. What does this mean? The good and gracious

will of God is surely done without our prayer, but we ask in this prayer that it may be done also among us. When does this

happen? God’s will is done when he hinders and defeats every evil scheme and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful

self, which would prevent us from keeping his name holy and would oppose the coming of his kingdom. And his will is done when

he strengthens our faith and keeps us firm in his word as long as we live. This is his gracious and good will. (Martin Luther)

Jesus gave us the Lord’s Prayer in response to the apostles’ request to teach them how to pray. So what do we

learn about prayer from this petition? We might wonder if there were any willful children in the first century

when Jesus lived and taught on earth. Or are willful children the product of our time? It is a sad scene when a

strong willed child confronts the strong will of a parent. Jesus probably chose to insert that word in this gym

session on prayer for very good reasons. By the time Jesus took his 12 apostles aside to teach them about

prayer, ten million prayers had already flooded the gates of heaven. And we might guess how many of those

petition reflected the willful nature of sinful humanity. God’s will is already here and our prayer muscles need

to bend to fit God’s will! - Pastor Donohue Sarff

Pray for: A willingness to seek and pray for God’s will, a deeper awareness of the needs of suffering, peoples

in all lands, a willingness to give of our abundance to help those who hunger for physical and spiritual

nourishment, our Christ the King congregation to be a spiritual power locally and globally, concerns that are

heavy on your heart, a thankful heart for all God’s blessings.
