The Gospel According to Greg

Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor Greg Taylor [email protected] Yesterday in church we studied Galatians 6 and that famous passage “you reap what you sow,” and concluded that our decisions – all of our decisions – make a difference and leave a legacy – one way or another. It’s in this context I share with you an incredible illustration/article by Jonathan Merritt of Duluth, Georgia, I discovered last week during sermon prep:

On February 24, 1955, Stephen was born in San Francisco to an unmarried mother named Joanne Simpson. Joanne was a graduate student at the time and had concluded that her life was just too hectic to raise a child. We don't know what thoughts went through Joanne's mind, but given a similar set of circumstances, many pregnant women in our world face the following decision: to have an abortion or to bring the child to term and put the child up for adoption. Joanne Simpson chose the latter and gave birth to her son. Stephen was almost immediately adopted by an accountant named Clara and a machinist named Paul, two parents who would provide a loving home for him. Stephen would go on to graduate from Homestead High School in Cupertino, California, and attend only one semester at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. For the next 18 months, he spent his nights sleeping on a friend's floor and spent his days returning empty coke bottles for the 5 cent deposit and dressed up as characters from Alice in Wonderland in a San Jose mall for $3 an hour. But in 1974, Stephen's fortune changed. He would become a designer for the video game giant Atari, where he would create one of the most popular games of the era: Breakout. He would stay there for two years before leaving to start a new computer venture with two friends. They chose a simple name for their company: Apple. Today, the late Steve Jobs is considered one of the greatest creative minds of the modern era. Many cultural observers place him among the ranks of innovators such as Thomas Edison in terms of his contribution to the way humans live their everyday lives.

The Gospel According to Greg (cont’d)

Throughout the week many of you will use an Apple computer or an iPad. Or you may listen to music downloaded on iTunes and played through your car stereo speakers by your iPod. Many of you have an iPhone sitting in your pants pocket right now. You've enjoyed memorable moments with your children while watching the latest film from Pixar, a company Jobs founded that pioneered computer animation. He was executive producer of Toy Story, one of the most beloved children's films of the last twenty years. Even though, as far as we can know, Steve Jobs never came to know Jesus, millions of Americans have encountered the Word of God through apps on his products. It will take decades to assess the impact of his inventions on modern society. Steve Jobs has changed our world. And all because on February 24, 1955, Joanne Simpson said yes to life and yes to adoption.

What a difference one decision can make! Can we even imagine what our world might look like if Steve Jobs was never given the gift of life? As someone blessed by the gift of life via adoption, I’m thankful every time I read stories about people like Steve Jobs and Tim Tebow and others who reinforce that truth that literally every life matters. Have a great week, Greg

Young at Heart David Buck, Coordinator

When our souls prosper, we flourish on the inside. We are at peace; we are full of joy; we are content; we live with a sense of destiny and purpose; we are growing spiritually; we have strong, loving relationships with others. God is a God of abundance and He wants us to live abundant lives. He came so we could have and enjoy life in abundance and to the full. “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” John 10:11 KJV On the 2nd of November, the Clinton Chiropractic Center is sending Dr. Stephanie Cluver to enlighten us to some new ideas to ease our problems with pain. Then on November 16th, we’ll be blessed by Phil Hansen singing and playing Christian Gospel. The 7th of December, the Heyworth choir will treat us to Christmas music, as they do every year. Our very own Christmas party with free dinner, gift exchange, Angel Tree Auction and many other events will be on December 21st. “Recall it as often as you wish, a happy memory never wears out.” Libbie Fudim Seven shows and much more are waiting for us in Branson, Missouri on November 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th. Then when we return, we’ll go to the Christmas in the Chapel to really get into the holiday spirit. To finish our year we’ll see the Gaither Homecoming Christmas Show on December 15th. Have a Happy New Year! “Write on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.” Ralph Waldo Emerson You can enjoy peace with yourself, but you will have to pursue it. Make a decision that since you are with you all the time, you should like yourself. God created you and He does not make junk, so start seeing your strengths and stop staring at your weaknesses. “I’ll tell you how to stay young: hang around with older people.” Bob Hope

Diaper Drive for Grab N Go Last year there was a need for diapers at our Grab N Go, so this year we’re having a diaper drive to help out. During the four Sundays of November, we will have a crib set up in the foyer for the collection of disposable diapers. The sizes needed are 2, 3 & 4. There will also be a diaper bag in the crib for monetary donations to purchase diapers. If you write a check, please make it out to FCC and put diaper drive in the memo line. The next Grab N Go will be Saturday, December 17th.

Donations for Thanksgiving Baskets The 1st - 3rd grade Sunday school classes will be collecting food for families in need within our community for Thanksgiving baskets. Please join with our children to help these families. Let’s demonstrate that love this year (as in the past) by sharing with others. Our food pantry will be giving out Thanksgiving baskets and needs your help - both in adding to our supply of food and in providing names of those in need, especially those in our Christian family (as God’s word instructs). Forms will be provided at the information booth and in the church office. Please pick one up and fill it out, returning it to the church office by November 14. (Our average monthly distribution to families to date this year is 265. We thank God and you for providing so that we can provide.)

“Resources” Jim Coonce“Resources” Jim Coonce“Resources” Jim Coonce“Resources” Jim Coonce

This week I have decided to share some worship resources that include music, magazines, books and other materials that I use often. Some of these are new favorites; some are well-established bastions of information. I hope they serve you as well as they continue to serve me! Worship Leader Magazine I started subscribing to this standard in worship journalism many years ago and still eagerly await the latest issue. This is probably considered a trade magazine for worship leaders, but there are always great articles on various issues and aspects of worship. Subscription costs $25/year. www.worshipleader.com www.worshiptogether.com This is a great website that I visit often so I can listen to many current worship artists that are recording for free. Also, there is great feature called New Song Café, where, you guessed it, new songs are highlighted. This is a short video “webisode” that features various Christian artists. They are interviewed, then will play a live version of their song and will then give us worship leader types some “how to” tips on playing the song. Relevant Magazine Relevant is an excellent pop culture resource with a Christian perspective. They often do articles on various celebrities, trends and ideas (Christian and non-Christian). I will be honest with you on this; I often disagree with their perspective on many of the issues they discuss. However, I believe that it’s important to be up on what is happening in the world and they have created a niche in Christian journalism. www.relevantmagazine.com Some Books Worth Mentioning (Not in any particular order) “Who Stole My Church” Gordon MacDonald “The Great Worship Awakening” Robb Redman “A Whack On the Side Of the Head” Roger von Oech (This is not a “Christian” book, but an excellent book on creativity!) “Worship Evangelism” Sally Morgenthaler “Worship Old and New” Robert Webber Music Gungor “Ghosts Upon the Earth” - An eclectic mix of contemporary, classical and rock using many various instruments. This is my current favorite collection to listen to right now.
