Kip McGrath Education Centres offer professional tutoring

programs for primary through to high school students.

We help build the foundations for academic success.

I have been thinking lately about how important it is to buy and shop locally. You might have noticed that ‘local’ is pretty important to us!

Wherever possible, I try to purchase either in one of our publication areas or in the area where we live ourselves. And I do so, even if it means it’s a little bit more expensive, or they have to order it in.

To me, shopping locally is thinking long term, instead of short term.

Short term thinking is all about ‘me’ - I want it now, at a cheap price regardless of who owns the company, how many people they have laid off or cut back the hours of, or whether the money you are handing over will go offshore.

Long term thinking is all about the community and supporting our neighbour. It’s about understanding and caring where our dollar goes. It’s about supporting the local shop owner so he can then employ local teenagers who might otherwise find ‘other’ things to do with their time.

It’s also about thinking longterm for our local economy. If we don’t support these independent products, services and stores, soon they won’t be there as an option at all. And we are naive if we think the big chain stores are going to keep their prices down once the small local competition is gone. Prices will skyrocket, and we will have no option but to pay them. I don’t want to do that! And I really don’t want to do that knowing that I was one of the ones who helped create that situation.

Shopping locally is also about building relationships. If I’m going to shop regularly in a local store, it’s much more likely that I’ll forge a friendship with the staff of that store. And what happens when we are friendly with staff? They are accommodating and friendly right back, particularly as you are showing loyalty and helping them stay in business. The owner also knows that there is a greater chance he/she will see you in the street, or in the school carpark so will be motivated to give you even greater service!

And to those of us in business in the local area - take care of your customers who faithfully come and spend their hard earned dollars with you. Treat them nicely! It’s amazing to me how many business owners don’t treat their patrons with respect or any sign that they are grateful that person is shopping there.

It’s a two way street isn’t it? As consumers, we need to give the local business owner a chance, before we decide to take our custom outside the area. And as business owners, we need to value and appreciate those who do make the choice to shop locally and support the independent businesses in the area.

If as business owners, we keep in mind how we like to be treated as a customer, we may just find there is more synergy between the two, which can only be good for our communities and those of us who live in them.

Casey has just returned from a well earned holiday overseas.

Did you know?

Did you know smiling and laughing are actually healthy for you? It’s true!

A s w e l l a s b e i n g attractive; smiling and laughing are beneficial to your entire well-being Everybody loves a big smile when they receive one. It is just as rewarding to give a big smile.

The activity of smiling releases natural anti -depressant chemicals from your brain, beneficial to your entire being. Laughing also has a direct affect on the body. The popular saying “laughing makes good blood” is scientifically accurate.

When we laugh, it produces rapid rhythmical contractions of the diaphragm. These contractions stimulate abdominal organs and pulmonary function, modify breathing and heart rate.

The psychological value of smiling and laughing is just as impressive. These activities release built up tension and inner anxiety. When a person is tired or unhappy, it is better to relax through smiling and/or laughing than any other non-active means. Exercise can help as well.

Smiling impacts our everyday lives – personally, professionally and socially. When you are ashamed of your smile, you either hide it or you do not smile as much. Self confidence is also a big factor, the ability to smile and really smile happily lifts your self esteem.

Today, through the continual advancements in the field of Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry or Orthodontics, your dream smile is now closer than you think. There are many different options available to improve your smile or give you the perfect smile you always wanted.

Contact us at Lakedental today and speak with one of our friendly team members about transforming your teeth into a healthy, natural smile.

Smile yourself healthy!

Local teenager, 14 year old Jonathan Ward (pictured), has been playing soccer competitively since he was nine and just two years ago joined a futsal team. He is now excited to have been selected for a tour to Brazil as part of the Australian Futsal squad.

The trip is for three weeks, where the squad of approximately 30 boys will gain extensive training and play in competitive games, while also having the chance to visit football facilities, enjoy some sightseeing and meet members of the Brazilian football team.

Jonathan was selected at the Schools National Competition held in Townsville in October where he represented Queensland City team which won the competition and has been selected as a keeper and field player.

To fundraise for the trip, local business, Building Futures Montessori, is hosting a unique event that the whole family can participate in on May 18.

The event will be an adaptation of the orienteering game, Rogaine, which is gaining in popularity all over the world, and is being dubbed ‘strollergaine’ by event organisers.

Starting at 2pm, strollergaine is designed specifically for families with a child in a stroller and has the full support of the Queensland Rogaine Association.

Rogaining is a race to find markers using a compass and map with competitors determining their own course and choices. The original model is played in the bush, however, there are now metro-rogaines which are held in urban/city areas.

Organisers describe the event as ‘an afternoon stroll meets the Amazing Race meets Minute to Win It’. Information on Rogaining is available at: www.qldrogaine.asn.au/qraonline.

Building Futures Montessori welcomes sponsorships from the business community to participate in this fun day for local residents.

Cost of entry for the event is just $15 (plus a $10 membership fee to Queensland Rogaine if not already a member) which includes a hot meal at the end of the conclusion of the day. Register on the Queensland Rogaine website: www.qldrogaine.asn.au.

Residents and business owners are welcome to contact Vicki on 0417 199 755 for more details.

for all Preventative DentistryUna Gray, from The Terraces at Forest Lake, is pretty

handy with a needle and thread but her real talent lies in stitching up community support for children battling cancer.

When Una’s granddaughter told her about Pillowcases for Oncology Kids, she was determined to contribute to the cause. Instigated by a teenage cancer sufferer from New South Wales, the initiative creates and donates bright cotton pillowcases to children’s oncology wards around the country.

“Cancer is a dreadful scourge and when you see it in a child, it is just heartbreaking,” Una said. “I’m passed the age of getting too physically involved in things but this is a project where I can really make an impact.”

Thanks to Una’s decade-long association with The Forest Lake Probus Club, she was able to rally the group to stitch up almost 80 pillowcases before Christmas.

This year she’s turned her attention to The Terraces, the retirement village she calls home. “I approached the village manager to see if I could access the leisure centre for a monthly sewing bee and she thought it was a great idea.”

Before long, Una mobilised members of her Probus Club, the Forest Lake Seniors and residents from The Terraces. She held her first meeting onsite at The Terraces in mid-March and had over a dozen volunteers stitching up a storm.

“We had one lovely male resident who couldn’t sew but he brought along a coffee machine and acted as our barista for the morning,” Una said. The group made 50 pillowcases at that first meeting.

The Terraces Village Manager Leigh Bradley said Una is a wonderful example of the generous nature of her residents. “Una brings such a spark to our community,” Ms Bradley said. “I’m thrilled to open our doors to such a valuable project.”

Una’s team of super sewers gather at The Terraces on the third Friday of each month, from 10.30am till 1.30pm. They welcome new crafty kin and are especially grateful for donations. Each pillowcase costs between $5 and $7 in material and yarn.

“We look for fabrics that are 100% cotton and feature light and bright designs,” Una said. “Unicorns, fairies and cherries are popular with the girls, while the boys tend to like robots and trains.”

Una and the team would appreciate monetary donations for purchasing fabric and supplies for the pillowcases. Una can be contacted by sending an email to [email protected] or call Tammy on 0402 228 125. Alternatively, residents are encouraged to call 3879 4401 for more information about The Terraces’ sewing bee in support of Pillowcases for Oncology Kids.

On Friday 22nd March the Student Council at Grand Avenue State School held a “Rainbow” theme Free Dress day to raise money for flood affected students at Bundaberg East State School.

As a result of the floods earlier this year, the Bundaberg East school community had lost many supplies such as computers, instruments and stationery as the rooms were soaked. Some students also lost their homes and are still living in temporary accommodation.

Every Grand Avenue student who was dressed in the Rainbow theme gave a Gold Coin donation. Staff members participated too.

A total of $1200 was raised! Thanks goes to the Forest Lake Westpac branch for helping with the handling of the money for us.

On behalf of the Grand Avenue school community, Chaplain Kathy is making a personal trip to Bundaberg to present the cheque to their Principal and School Chaplain.

Well done to everyone who contributed to this fun fundraising day and we hope Bundaberg East students can recover quickly.

For local resident, Laura Di Carlo, deciding to participate in this years Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer will be no easy ride.

“I only started riding a road bike at the start of this year, so this will be an extremely challenging journey for me,” she said. “But no matter how hard it gets I keep in mind that the struggle I face is nothing compared to what cancer patients must endure.”

Watching her aunt suffer and lose her life to breast cancer eight years ago has given Laura the determination and drive to help raise funds to conquer cancer.

“I am in my final year of university about to graduate with a Bachelor of Medical Imaging Science to become a radiographer.

“I decided to participate in the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer as it has been my ambition to raise awareness and much needed funds for cancer research since I lost my beautiful aunt.”

Taking place in August, the Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer event sees participants riding 200km over two days. Last year the ride raised 5.7million dollars across Australia.

With one in two people being diagnosed with some form of cancer in their life time, funds are desperately needed by the Queensland Institute of Medical Research to fund breakthrough and critical cancer research into investigating the causes of more than 13 cancers, as well as developing the most accurate diagnostics, designing new drugs, vaccines and immunotherapies. The new treatments will have the potential to allow for earlier detection and increased survival rates.

Laura needs to raise $2500 in order to participate in the ride and you can help her get there. Businesses, as well as individuals, are encouraged to sponsor and donate to Laura.

There are various ways the community can support Laura: visit www.conquercancer.org.au select Brisbane, then select Donate then in the name field enter Laura Di Carlo and follow the links; if you are a shop owner, place a money tin at the front desk for donations; or donate directly by sending an email to [email protected].

After the success of two quarterly markets and a twilight market last year, Grand Avenue State School P&C are now running a monthly market on the second Sunday of each month.

The May market is on Mothers Day, May 12th, from 8am until 2pm, so come and treat your Mum to a morning out exploring the many stalls on offer followed by a coffee, cake, ice cream, or she can choose her own gift from the wide choice of products on offer.

The market takes place in the school grounds and inside the auditorium, so you can still enjoy them whatever the weather. There are some familiar faces from the old markets previously held at the shopping centre, and many new stalls. There is entertainment for the kids, and a P&C run BBQ. All profits go to help the school. Find out more at facebook.com/GrandMarkets.

Mother’s Day treats on offer at the Markets

The Terraces Social Committee and Cafe de Paris are pleased to be hosting Cancer Council’s annual event, The Biggest Morning Tea, which this year, is celebrating it’s 20th year.

The popular event will be held on Thursday May 23 at 10am, and is open to all residents of the Forest Lake area.

With upwards of 70 people in attendance, the morning tea is much more than a cuppa and a piece of cake. Lucky Door prizes, raffles and an auction where residents have donated hand crafted items and local businesses have donated items and vouchers, will create fun and excitement to the morning.

The cost of the morning tea is $10.00 which includes a selection of hot food such as savouries, sausage rolls, vol-au-vents as well as sandwiches, scones, cakes, and as much tea, coffee, and/or fruit punch as you can drink.

Due to the popularity of the event, anyone wishing to attend needs to book their place by phoning Dianne de Lange on 3271 1852 or send an email to [email protected].

It will be ready, set, go for Forest Lake Little Athletics (FLLA) next season thanks to the second grant from Heritage Bank’s local community branch.

The group will share in $65,000 from the latest round of community grants, with $2,010.50 to go towards discus-throwing nets.

The first grant bought some high jump mats for the fledgling group, helping some of its young members get to state representative level.

FLLA Centre Manager Mr Norm Jefferies said his group was “really happy and grateful” for the two grants.

“We’ve just completed our third season, so it’s extremely rewarding to get the funding from Heritage to grow our equipment base,” Norm said. “We’ve been so happy with Heritage we’ve even transferred our banking to them. Heritage is definitely more community focused.“

Forest Lake Community Branch Manager Ms Chris Green said the latest round of grants raised the total the branch had donated to community groups to more than $150,000.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide grants to such a wide range of community groups,” Ms Green said. “We’re only able to give back to the community because of the support of our customers, so it’s definitely a win-win for all.”

Other beneficiaries include: • $28,000 to Forest Lake State School Parents & Citizens Association to replace the playground for children with

special needs. • $15,000 (plus $1,400 for signage) to Forest Lake Baptist Church to assist with the building of a new playground

and a food van to deliver breakfasts to children sent to school without the first meal of the day. • $9,500 to Inala Police Citizens Youth Club for resealing their indoor sports facility. • $4,275 to Pallara State School for the purchase of iPads and associated equipment to provide an interactive learning

environment. • $2000 to Forest Lake Uniting Church for parenting classes around the region, plus $1250 for trailer signage and

purchase of push bike. • $1,716 to Astrid Hawke School Chaplain to fund young children’s emotional and social intelligence classes.

Kidney failure, or more correctly Chronic Renal Failure, is the most common medical disease affecting cats. It is mostly seen in older cats with only about 10% of diagnoses in cats less than three years of age.

The kidneys have many functions. They play a vital role in removing waste products from the blood stream, retaining essential salts and proteins, regulating red blood cell production, maintaining blood pressure, maintaining hydration and producing urine.

Chronic renal failure is a condition where, over time, the kidneys deteriorate, resulting in the failing of all or some of these functions. The kidneys have a large amount of capacity to perform their various functions, so at least 70% of the kidneys need to be affected before any signs of disease are seen. In most cases this means that the damage has been occurring over a number of months or even years before the failure of the kidneys is evident.

Signs of possible kidney disease are weight loss, increased urination, inappropriate urination, incontinence, excessive drinking, vomiting, poor appetite and poor coat quality.

Renal failure is usually diagnosed by a blood and urine test. These tests help to determine the extent of the disease, allowing your vet to proceed with the best course of treatment. Full blood profiles should be run as it is common to find other problems in older cats present at the same time.

The risks associated with chronic renal failure can be minimized by maintaining good hydration and a high quality diet. Controlling and understanding other issues such as hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure and heart disease also found in older cats ensures the best kidney function. Once kidney disease is diagnosed, there are many specific diets available which can help support the kidney to maintain good function.

Forest Lake Lions Club update An altruistic deed by our youngstersYoung Jessica and her sister Alicia were moved watching the news about the

devastation caused by the recent Bundaberg floods. Determined to do something for the people who were so badly affected, they put together a project plan to raise money with a target of $300 to be donated to somebody who is adversely affected by the floods. With the approval of their school Head Mistress they set-up a stall to sell small items of food during tea and lunch breaks. They bought food items at discount prices and sold them with a reasonable profit. The cupcakes they made at home were sold at a better profit. Very soon they had a team of colleagues helping them in their venture and within three weeks they exceeded their target by collecting $425.

Jessica and Alicia made a beautiful presentation of their project at the Lions Club Dinner meeting in March. They presented the cheque for $425 to the president of the Lion Club Haley Grady, pictured above. The donation will be sent to the Lions Club of Bundaberg to be handed directly to a deserving recipient. Jessica and Alicia are the granddaughters of Lion Julie Barr, a long standing member of our club.

48,000 Specs to PhilippinesLast month Lions Recycle for Sight Australia shipped 48,000 refurbished spectacles to Mindanao, the flood affected area in

Philippines and another 20,000 to PNG. Also 10,000 refurbished specs were sent to NZ to be distributed among the islands in Micronesia by Lions club Yacht owners who frequent these islands. With our well organised distributions network we are able to deliver these valuable items with no cost. Our Forest Lake community responded well by depositing their used specs at Paul Fells, local optometrist. Lions Club of Forest Lake has so far collected and delivered over 600 used spectacles and sunglasses to the refurbishment centre at Redcliffe. Many thanks to the Forest Lake, Inala and Centenary suburbs communities who are supporting this project. Please note that this is an ongoing activity and the more used glasses we collect more people in the developing world will benefit.

Youth of the Year (YOTY) State FinalsState YOTY finals were held on 6th April at Wynnum-Manly Workers club sponsored by Lions Club of Morton Bay. Joe

Orange from Q3 district was judged the best public speaker and the overall winner was Jesse Trecco-Alexander from Ingham SHS sponsored by Lions Club of Lower Herbert-Halifax.

by John Prout

May is the month we celebrate Mother’s Day so happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, nannas

and grandmas. I trust your day will be appreciated and a memorable one. The rose is the flower for Valentine’s Day as it is a symbol of love however at this time of the year the Chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum grandiflorum) appears to be the popular one to give on Mother’s day. Maybe it’s because it ends in “mum”. Instead of giving your mother a bunch of flowers that will last a week or so, why not give her a living plant? There are many lovely ones available from your local nursery and this gift will last for years.

Talking about beautiful flowers, we have had our first bus trip for the year as we visited The Garden of Eden, at Ormeau and Jonica’s Garden in Logan Reserve. Even with the more than normal rainfall we have had, both gardens were in excellent condition and deserve to be part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme. On Saturday 11 May, at 9 am, we will be meeting next to the Post Office at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre and car-pooling it to Jerry Coleby-Williams home in Wynnum. This is an excellent opportunity to view his garden that we have seen several times during the Gardening Australia show.

Our next bus trip will be a ‘Christmas in July’ celebration on Saturday 20 July as we travel to the Ocean View Winery in Dayboro. Naturally a wine tasting and a tour of the winery are on the agenda along with morning tea at a garden in Mt Samson. For a flyer contact Heather, phone 3879 2129 or John, 3288 3131. Don’t be the one to miss out on this trip!

Residents in the Forest Lake, Ellen Grove, Richlands and Heathwood areas have the opportunity to participate in the Heritage Bank 2013 Parks & Garden Competition with Entry Forms available at the Heritage branch, Forest Lake.

The garden club, along with Friends of the Parks, have once again came together to organise the bi-annual garden competition with perpetual trophies and cash prizes to win. Judging will be on the 20th September so start preparing your gardens now. For further information contact Dawn phone 3271 1005 or Lorraine on 3879 6210.

At this month’s meeting our special guest will be Helen Rattenbury discussing ‘Up cycling in the Garden’. This will be Helen’s first visit to our club and the theme will prove helpful to all of us. Make sure you join us. All visitors will receive our newsletter, lucky door ticket, free plants and great conservation form other local residents interested in gardening.

TAXATION

For honest advice at an honest price

in your home

After much media speculation the Federal Government has now announced that from July 2014 if you are retired and have a superannuation fund that earns $100,000 or more, the earnings above that threshold will be taxed at 15%...in other words another tax on superannuation and increased complexity.

The potential reaction was immediately diluted by references to the fact that only about 16,000 very wealthy Australians would be affected, those with superannuation assets exceeding $2,000,000. Application of some basic arithmetic implies that the government must be thinking that 5% is a fairly standard rate of return for superannuation funds.

Admittedly the GFC has not been kind to cumulative investment returns over the medium term, but I guess if 5% was the best I could expect from my superannuation fund I might be looking somewhere else to invest. Even if 5% is considered a reasonable simplistic benchmark, one must recognise that this could comprise a 15% return one year, a minus 10% return the next and a 10% return in the third year. The 15% return in the first year means that the superannuation fund only needs one-third of the bandied about $2,000,000 figure to be subject to the new tax on its excess earnings in that year.

An interesting question arises with next year’s negative 10% return. Is this ever taken into account, that is, will there be some mechanism for recognising cumulative returns such as the carry back of tax losses regime that applies to companies this year? In other words will the system be symmetrical (wishful thinking!) or asymmetrical (more likely!).

Of course, there will no doubt be additional administration costs somewhere along the line when a person has multiple superannuation funds, the returns of which will presumably have to be consolidated.

I somehow don’t think I will have the magical $2,000,000 figure the government talks about so I could simply say “I don’t really care, it won’t affect me.” However, the more critical issue in my view is that this simply reflects more tinkering with the superannuation system under the slogan of “fairness”. If saving for one’s retirement is really a key priority to be encouraged, then let us have a stable and simple savings environment, not one where the landscape changes every year around Budget time.

The South West Progress Association’s ‘Queensland Day Volunteer Award’ nominations are now open. These awards honour our community volunteers who give their time for the betterment of our community. I am proud to partner with SWPA and have done so for many years so that these deserving people get the acknowledgement they deserve. If you know of a worthy recipient from my electorate who you would like to nominate, please phone my office on 3372 3207 and I will send out a nomination form. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday June 1st at the Lions Soccer Club, Richlands.

The Minister for Transport and Main Roads has recently handed over responsibility for finalising the Newman Government’s bus network review in Brisbane to the Brisbane City Council.

As such the bus service in the Forest Lake area is currently under review by the Brisbane City Council. Members of the community fought long and hard to give residents a service that provides safe, frequent and reliable transport through the area. Residents rely on these services and use them every day. 2000 community members recently signed our petition to keep bus services in Forest Lake and Inala safe from cuts. The Council needs to listen to the community and not touch our bus services.

As the Brisbane City Council will now be conducting its own review of bus services, I encourage local residents to tell council how important the local bus services are. You can give them feedback at brisbane.qld.gov.au. The Council aims to give its final recommendation to the State Government on June 1 with submissions closing May 20. You can have your say by contacting Cr Angela Owen-Taylor on 3131 7022 or Cr Milton Dick on 3407 1211.

As the months quickly pass, the Algester Electorate Office gets busier and busier, with exciting announcements from the State Government and plenty of planning for local events.

One particular event I am looking forward to is our Queensland Day Festival, to be held on June 8 in conjunction with the Algester/Parkinson Lions. Although the event will be held in Pallara, we are inviting community groups from all over the electorate to participate by holding a stall, selling food, or being part of our festive stage display.

While we have done our best to contact as many community groups as possible, if you are part of a community group who might be interested in participating, please do not hesitate to contact the Algester Electorate Office on 3278 9257 or [email protected].

In exciting news from the State Government, the Premier and Minister for Education unveiled a ground-breaking plan to improve teacher quality and give our students the best possible start in life. The Great Teachers = Great Results action plan will invest $535 million of additional funding in Queensland schools over four years, starting from 2015.

building better communities through communication

When I was in Washington DC some years ago, I bought a friend a President Obama “bobble-head” doll. The problem was I kept forgetting to give it to her every time I saw her. In fact, it was 18 months before I finally handed it over to her. There it was sitting on the shelf in my office and yet I kept forgetting to pass it on, even though I passed it every day. It’s not as though I had lost it – I just forgot to give it to her.

Sometimes our best-laid plans, though well intentioned just slip by. We just either forget or time just passes by without any action. This can often also be the case with our relationships. Investing in our friendships takes time and intentionality. Sometimes we know of a friend who could use a phone call but, though we plan to do it, time slips by and we just don’t get around to it.

The problem with letting our relationships just slide by is that we grow increasingly distant. So much time passes that we don’t feel comfortable to make the contact we should have made ages ago. Instead of being friends who are well-connected, we just lose touch and a valuable friendship evaporates.

No doubt, there are some friends who can go months or even years without speaking and yet just pick the friendship back up where it was last left. I have a mate like that – we went to School together and we can often go years without seeing each other. But, when we do see each other again, it’s like we had just talked last week. This is an important and valued friendship. But, it is also rare.

We need friendships – good honest friends who can support us when we’re down, who will allow us to support them when they’re doing it tough, who will give us the honest critique when we need it, who will laugh with us, relax with us and share life with us. We’re not meant to live in a cocoon.

God tells us through the Bible, “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) We are designed for friendship and community. Indeed, a hero of mine, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, said, “It is only in community that true solitude can exist.” And so, with the importance of friendships in mind, we need to invest in them.

In the hub-bub of life and work and family and pressures, take some time to connect with some friends - not just via Facebook but with a phone call or a coffee. The investment we make in friendships gives a better return than anything the share market offers.

Back pain is a common ailment for Forest Lake residents. It’s long been known to public health experts that 85% of us all will be disabled with back pain at some stage of our lives. Over two million Australians have back problems each year. The consequences of back pain are serious – it affects families, lifestyle and productivity. And people with long-lasting back pain report 2.5 times more other disorders, such as depression.

One in eleven Forest Lake residents can be expected to have back problems this year. And one of the most powerful preventative health steps you can take is to improve your postural fitness.

That’s the message from the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia (CAA) which is urging residents to Get Back to Your Best this Spinal Health Week (20 – 26 May).

Local Chiropractors Drs Michael and Keith Charlton have called upon Forest Lake residents to take up the challenge of improving their postural fitness.

“Postural fitness helps you lead an optimal healthy lifestyle; reduce muscle fatigue and improve your postural endurance,” Dr Michael said.

“Postural fitness means optimal spinal alignment. It gives you greater strength and endurance, better coordination and balance”.

To take control of your postural fitness, you need to think and walk tall and pick an exercise plan that strengthens your core muscles and if needed, to rehabilitate your spine.

Dr Michael suggests exercise such as brisk walking, yoga and/or swimming as good choices to improve spine function.

Let’s get back to our best - Spinal Health Week

But Dr Michael also says we need to pay attention to how we sit and how long we sit, especially since some spend up to 16 hours a day sitting. Recent research shows that those who sit more than eight hours a day shorten their lives.

Tips for improving your posture at work include: try standing when you’re on the phone for extended periods; during meetings, take regular stretch breaks or make them walking meetings; while working at your computer, sit tall, take short breaks to stretch and stand; check and adjust your position regularly.

Dr Michael is available to conduct free workplace health talks to educate local businesses and their staff.

For advice on how to Sit Right visit www.SitRight.com.au and for a free posture assessment, contact Dr Michael and Dr Keith at Forest Lake Chiropractic, your local CAA chiropractors, on 3372 9944.

Our next meeting to be held at Settlers Village, 41 High St, Forest Lake is on Wednesday 8 May. Parking is available on High Street and

the Salvation Army Car Park on High Street. Come along for a relaxing chat over morning tea. Sign in is 9.30am. Meeting opens at 10am.

Forest Lake Branch provides National Seniors members in Forest Lake and surrounding suburbs with an opportunity to get together not only to meet new people and enjoy social outings but also to have their say and be informed on important issues that affect over 50’s.

Irish Eyes were smiling at our March meeting and members enjoyed a lovely performance by the very talented Tamsin and her Gran.

On the 20th March, 28 happy travellers boarded the MV Mirimar on a 19km journey up river towards Lone Pine. A delicious Devonshire tea was served as we got under way. It certainly was an entertaining, narrated journey and many of us agreed we did learn a great deal about the river’s history.

There were some beautiful old historic homes and modern mansions to see along the river banks and many other landmarks of great historical interest. Our vessel travelled alongside Indooroopilly Island home of a unique inner-city colony of fruit bats hidden among

the trees. Indooroopilly Island’s vegetation is mainly mangroves and forest red gum trees. The Mirimar docked at Sherwood Forest Park. Some of us stretched our legs with a short stroll through part of the lush green parkland. It was then back on board for lunch, a lovely roast meal, a very nice dessert, finished off with tea or coffee. The weather turned pretty bleak part way through our return journey. On the upper deck some of the ladies, with much giggling, made use of their umbrellas to protect them from the showers as we relaxed and listened to John Williamson songs. What a great day out. Thank you to Rob, Chris and their friendly staff.

Travel Consultant, Cindy, from National Seniors Travel may have given some members “the travel bug” at our April Branch meeting as she spoke about the great many interesting local and overseas destination holidays which can booked through the travel service.

Coming up on our calendar for members and friends is entertainment at our 8 May meeting, a special Mother’s Day treat, and a trip to Samford Historical Village on Thursday 16 May. Some members will be attending our Zone Conference at Ipswich on 16 May.

For further information about our Branch please contact either Julie Baldwin 3278 7274 or Ros Dunell 3372 9432.

April found us on another monthly outing, with 63 members booked to go to Mt.Tamborine on our Concord Coach with the help of their mini bus. On a fine Wednesday morning we headed off to Tamborine where we had our morning tea stop, our lovely food was supplied by some of our lady members and as usual a big success. On completion of our morning tea, those who wanted to walk the Skywalk boarded the mini bus and headed off while the others finished off their morning tea and they made their way to the Skywalk later. Those who walked the Skywalk said it was great and most would do it again. Then it was back on the road to continue our way to Mt Tamborine township for lunch and a look around the shops, which was well worth it.

All good things must come to an end so we boarded our Coach and mini bus for the return trip to Forest Lake. Travelling home, those who purchased items showed them off while others pondered the wonderful day they had. Now we look forward to our next months outing.

Forest Lake 50+ Club meet at Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am on the third Friday of each month, and new members are always welcome.

For more information on the club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9406 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or Mob 0466 377 618.

Date Claimers for the next three general meetings are May 17th, June 21st and July 19th.

As we enter May we have almost reached the halfway mark of 2013 and there is still plenty more to be packed into the year before we see it out.

The Parkinson Ward Multicultural and Dragon Boat Festival is fast approaching on Sunday, 2 June. This BCC funded festival is now an annual event on Brisbane’s Multicultural calendar, co-ordinated by the HAKKA Association, Forest Lake Rotary Club and the Queensland Dragonboat Federation. Held at the Lake and surrounding parkland, the day traditionally commences with a citizenship ceremony followed by a full program of multicultural entertainment, Dragonboat races with professional teams competing in the Lord Mayor’s Dragonboat challenge and lots of multicultural stalls including a vast array of tantalising multicultural food. It’s an event the whole family can enjoy with something for everyone.

It is anticipated by the end of June (weather permitting) we will see the delivery of a facility and infrastructure upgrade at Claremont Parade Park. The scope of works will include concreting of deco pathways, repairs to an existing pergola and minor landscaping of new vegetation. This project is being delivered through the Parkinson Ward Footpath and Parks Trust Fund.

This month on the 29 May, Homeless Connect will return for its first event of 2013 and in its sixth consecutive year. While public donations close on 3 May, there is still time to register your interest in volunteering your services on the day. To find out how, phone Volunteering Queensland on 3002 7600. Entertainers are also required and should register their interest with Volunteering Queensland at [email protected].

EVERY YOUNG PERSON DESERVES

A YOUNG LIFE

Aged care is no place for any young person. Yet right now, more than 7,500 young Australians with high care needs are living in aged care.

700,000 more are being cared for at home by family and friends, often with limited support. Why? If you, or a loved one, were to suffer an accident or illness that left you, or them, in need of full-time care, there are currently few alternatives for care and housing available.

Youngcare works to change this by building more age appropriate housing; financially assisting through At Home Care Grants; and providing information and advice through the Youngcare Connect hotline. Every young person deserves a young life and you can help create change by visiting www.youngcare.com.au/donate

With a new President at the helm and ably supported by his elected Committee, Probus Club of Forest Lake Inc is off to an exciting start. President: Alan Johnson; Vice President: Joan Browne; Secretary: Shirley Soblusky, Treasurer: Jim Morris, Activities Officers: Lyn Scott & Val Horrigan, Membership: Kevin Howson, Hospitality: Elva Stewart, Newsletter: Lin Marshall. PAQ Delegate: Don Lecky, Program & Past President: Julie Barr, Publicity: Marge Breitenbach.

The first speaker for the year was Annette Henderson, author, anthropologist, teacher and half-marathon runner who shared her extraordinary experiences with the club.

Her talk was entitled “Out of my comfort zone”. All her adventures began in the 1970’s when she married her husband Win, an adventure leader and also a qualified builder. In their Kombivan, advertising places they had been, including their Brisbane origins, they travelled overland from Calcuttta to London. In that same vehicle they crossed the Sahara desert and landed in Gabon, West Africa. After 24 hours, in that hot equatorial climate, they were approached by a New Zealand geologist who was intrigued by all the signage on their van. This heralded the birth of their love for the great apes!

The geologist was working on an international project deep in the equatorial rainforest for an International Consortium and needed a builder to design, as well as construct, a workers’ camp. The workers’ camp had fallen into disrepair and part of it had been abandoned but there was some form of a guest house and fifty seven Gabonese families lived in the camp. She was the only white woman in the camp. Some of her stories are sad and heart-rendering. One German geologist, Rodo, brought back to camp a baby gorilla whose mother had been killed and the baby had been tied up waiting to be bought. It had a nasty wound in the groin and gangrene had already set in. There was no time to take it to the French Research Station, equivalent to our CSIRO, where there were veterinarians so Win, Rodo and Annette had to use their skill and commonsense to clean and stitch up the wound. They needed anaesthetic and what better to use than some French Beaujolais left behind by previous french occupants!

The operation took three hours and twenty stitches, she survived, was named Josie and behaved like a human baby. During the day Annette looked after her in the office, Josie needed lots of cuddles and at night she slept next to Rodo to the strains of Tschaikovsky. When visiting the French Research Station, Annette witnessed first hand that even when animals are released back into the wild, after being saved as orphans, now as adults, they still recognise their “saviours” and come for hugs! Josie eventually was cared for by a French family.

When the Hendersons returned home, Annette studied anthropology and wanted to become a true great ape conservationist and return to Africa but was unable to do so. She has made and kept copious notes of valuable information and has published some of her experiences. Judith passed a vote of thanks to this amazing speaker who so captivated and enthralled her audience.

Any retirees or semi-retirees, young at heart, come and enjoy our fascinating speakers and learn about life outside your “square” and enjoy camaraderie. We meet every second Tuesday, 10a.m. at the Forest Lake Hotel. Further information page 35 of this issue.

The Performing Arts Centre of Excellence offers the students the opportunity to practice and perform in bands, choirs, ensembles, dance and drama excellence troupes and musical stage productions leading to performances at local, state and national events.

As part of the PACE program students experience firsthand the life and work of practising and performing artists through links with arts industry professionals and intensive workshops with commercial theatre groups, dance companies and state and national orchestras.

Hello ReadersThe Arts – ornamental or fundamental? In following the government’s recent push for higher literacy and numeracy levels through high stakes testing and the pursuant media hype on the ranking of schools, there is a very real danger that schools will not have the time to focus on the artistic disciplines. At the very time in history where we need young people to be the future creative thinkers and problem solvers this would be a big mistake.

Children like Arts education because it is hands on, provides immediate feedback and is usually a positive experience; all of which are the ingredients for engagement. When students think positively about Arts learning this engagement is likely to spin off into other areas of their schooling.

Learning an instrument, creating a painting, learning to dance or singing in a choir teaches students persistence; that practice and patience are required to improve outcomes. Through the Arts then, students form habits and attitudes that are necessary in any field.

Arts education also fosters creativity, which is essential in this rapidly changing world. Creating and displaying an original work, using space and rhythm or simply writing and

producing a play all bring opportunities for developing skills to think critically and creatively.

Aesthetic learning teaches students about beauty proportion and grace; as well as, the conflict, power and emotion of life itself. As students learn music, dance, drama and art they are developing the skills they will also need in studying languages, mathematics and other scientific and technological areas.

Often, the Arts require students to work together in groups, collaborating and building skills in the art of teamwork. Students come face to face with diversity and difference, realizing that great teamwork contributes to great performance. Arts education is integral to a well-rounded 21st century education, building confidence, fostering collaboration and inspiring passion.

If you want to see how your child’s education can be taken to the next level call 3372 0113 for your personalized tour of our primary and secondary schools and see our Arts

Photography can be likened to hunting for treasure. You go somewhere, you do something, you feel excited or amazed. This is your treasure and you want to tell everyone about it. So you take a picture and you email it, post it, tag it, name it, print it and frame it. The Forest Lake Photography Club encourages you to get out and look for special and amazing treasure in our wonderful world.

Recently the club organised a sunrise walk around the Forest Lake lake. We were tasked with looking for treasure in the form of Nature and Texture. It was an interesting challenge, and we were amazed at the variety of pictures shown at our next club meeting all taken at the lake: water lilies, birds, flowers, a water dragon, a bird eating a fish and even bark. These were just some of the ‘treasures’ that we walk past each time we walk around the lake.

Future topics this year include ‘Sport’, ‘Scapes’ and ‘People’ which will prove challenging.

The Forest Lake Photography Club is open to anyone with an interest in photography, from beginner to expert. The club offers opportunities to improve your photography from monthly meetings with lectures and workshops, to a number of daytime excursions to help you create impressive photographs or just gain experience and inspiration from others. Guests are welcome to attend.

The club meets on the second Tuesday of the month at the Salvation Army Community Hall, High Street, Forest Lake from 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm. Our next meetings are May 14 and June 11. We’d love to see you.

On Sunday the 24th March 27 members enjoyed the course and facilities at Gainsborough Greens Golf Club at Pimpama. The committee contributed towards to cost of the day which included a round of golf, motorised buggy and lunch. I did not hear any complaints. The course was in good condition after so much wet weather.

The weather was fine, the company great and the golf in extremes of very good to very bad. That’s golf and that’s what we enjoy.

Winners on the day were A Grade Alan Corless, runner up was Brian Cruickshank. B Grade winner was Pat Ayling, runner up was John Clark OCB. C Grade winner was Stephanie Corless and Mick Eveleigh was the runner up. Longest Drive in A Grade Mick Morley, B Grade Pat Ayling.

Nearest the pin on holes 3 and 15 winners were Craig Robertson and Stephanie Coreless. Approach shot winners Brian Cruickshank and Kyle Fairweather.

The next game will be on May 19 at Oxley Golf Club, tee time at 7.00am.

Rule 2.d.6 (b)A ball hitting a tree shall be deemed not to have hit the

tree. This is simply bad luck and luck has no place in a scientific game. The senior player must estimate the distance the ball would have travelled if it had not hit the tree and play the ball from there.

Page 34 - May 2013 - The Lake News

At the beginning of April, I was please to present 14 young local sportsmen and women each with $500 through the Local Sporting Champions Grants Program.

This Grant is an Australian Government initiative which provides funding assistance to young sportsmen and women who are participating in a state or national sporting competition. The Grant contributes towards the cost of travel, accommodation, equipment and/or uniforms for the nominated sporting competition.

The latest round of Multicultural Youth Sports Partnership Program is currently open and I would like to encourage local community organisations in the Western Corridor to apply for funding.

The Multicultural Youth Sports Partnership Program provides grants of between $5,000 and $50,000 to organisations to help youth from new and emerging communities and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to participate in sport within their local communities.

Sport plays an important part in Australian society, and as a Government, we want to help local sporting organisations better connect with new and emerging communities.

Through this program we are helping refugees and new migrants to better understand Australian culture through sport.

Sport is a fabulous driver for building participation and inclusion for young Australians from diverse backgrounds – and this is very clear here in the Western Corridor.

The Multicultural Youth Sports Partnership will continue to play an important role in helping these young people to participate in their local communities through sport.

Applications are now open for the next round of Multicultural Youth Sports Partnership program. Applications close on 2 May 2013 and successful applicants will be announced this July.

For more information about the grants, visit www.ausport.gov.au.
