Housing sales likely to improve expert says By B.C. Manion [email protected] Most of the time when you hear what Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors has to say — it’s during a congressional hearing or on the national news. But last week, Yun made an appearance before real estate professionals gathered for a meeting of the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors. He offered plenty of food for thought about the housing market’s condition. “The bottom line is that we have en- countered some degree of recovery. I think we will continue the recovery over the next two to three years, and then subsequently, the recovery may well change into expan- sion,” said Yun, who frequently speaks at conferences for real estate professionals around the country. “Now, you are just trying to get back to the prior principal in terms of prices. It may take an additional two to three years to get to where it had been in 2005-2006,” Yun said. When it comes to home prices, he said, Florida has a key advantage: Its warm winter weather. Through the years, people have moved to Florida from colder climates in northern states. “It sort of came to a halt during the hous- ing market crash. People up North just could not sell their home, or they were somewhat underwater,”Yun said. The market recovery has put them in a better position to move, which is good news for Florida, he said. “So, you will regain that flow of new resi- dents coming into Florida. Florida has been No 1, consistently, during normal years in at- tracting new residents,”Yun said. The housing market had generally expe- rienced a two-year recovery in 2012 and 2013, but then stalled in 2014, Yun said. So people are wondering what will happen next. “A two-year-and-out situation would be highly unusual, if one looks at the past,” Yun said. He considers it an anomaly and pre- dicts that there will be a continued recovery B PIGZ IN Z’HILLS INSIDE, PAGE 1B JANUARY 21, 2015 LAKERLUTZNEWS.COM The L AKER EAST PASCO EDITION The L AKER Free We’re your orthopedic connection. Despite objections, multifamily zoning gets OK in PascoBy B.C. [email protected]

Residents urged the Pasco CountyCommission to reject a request to allowmultifamily zoning on a parcel on ClintonAvenue, but commissioners went along withthe planning staff’s recommendation for ap-proval.

The new zoning designation, requestedunder the name of Six Feet Under, LLC, willallow a maximum of 157 units, according toCarol Clarke, the county’s zoning administra-tor.

The 21.6-acre property is on the north

side of Clinton Avenue, about 1,700 feetwest of U.S. 301.

Opponents raised concerns about addi-tional traffic that the project will create. They also said a multifamily project willchange the character of the area.

“Please keep Dade City a small town,”said Abelardo Cruz, of 37451 OrangeBlossom Lane. “We don’t have a problemwith single-family.”

Dorothy Moore, president of The RidgeHomeowners Association, said her associa-tion is “very much against higher density.”

Donald Dempsey of 37510 OrangeBlossom Lane, told commissioners: “We have

enough problems with traffic.”Another speaker told commissioners that

he’s in the process of building a new home inthe area, and he’s worried about his invest-ment in the area and also concerned thatothers will be less likely to build a home there,if the multifamily project gained approval.

Allen Altman, one of the owners of theland up for rezoning, said he was ap-proached by some people at his churchabout the possibility of creating some seniorhousing at the site.

“We don’t know exactly what’s going tobe there,” he said, but he does know there’sa need for that kind of housing.

Altman also noted that he’d seen a peti-tion submitted against the rezoning. The listcontained several names of friends he hasknown for years.

They didn’t know who owned the land,Altman said. They were reacting to a rumorthey heard that the multifamily housing wasfor low-income people.

Altman said his friends dropped their ob-jections once they knew he was involved.

County Commissioner Kathryn Starkeynoted that senior housing tends to be awonderful addition to a community.

Commissioners approved the rezoningon a 5-0 vote, without debate.

The art of business through small transactionsBy B.C. [email protected]

The children on the covered play courtbehind Chester Taylor Elementary Schoolwere having a blast.

They were learning the ins and outs ofbusiness without even realizing it.

As the kids made their way from stationto station, they could earn money by askingquestions.

They could then spend their earnings ongames of chance to win prizes.

Of course, the money was paper money, and the prizes were things like candy, tinyballs and pencils — but the experience gavekids a chance to interact with area business-es, learn a bit about their operations andhave some fun at the same time.

The event’s main goal was to pave theway for elementary school children to de-velop a greater interest in business, saidRene Martinez, a teacher at WeightmanMiddle School in Wesley Chapel.

Martinez, Gregg Clapp and Ryan Prieto, all serve as advisors to the Future BusinessLeaders of America chapter, which meets asa club at Weightman Middle.

Chester Taylor Elementary, in Zephyrhills, was just one of the elementary schools in-cluded in the American Enterprise Projectorganized by the Weightman Middle Schoolchapter.

Other schools they included wereWesley Chapel Elementary, Seven OaksElementary, Double Branch Elementary andNew River Elementary.

By the time they’d finished their rounds, thousands of children in nearly 75 classeshad the opportunity to learn about localbusinesses and have some fun.

“Every year, each FBLA chapter has to do

something called the American BusinessEnterprise. And the kids have to come upwith a theme and an idea and put it togeth-er and organize it,” Martinez said.

“Right now, Weightman Middle School isthe only middle school in Pasco County thathas an FBLA chapter. It’s our first year. We’rereally small,” Martinez said.

Chapter members were wondering howthey could expand, and they came up with

the idea of reaching out to elementaryschools, Martinez said.

Prieto, a student at Pasco-Hernando StateCollege, was involved in FBLA at WesleyChapel High and he saw the need to getmore students involved at the middle schoollevel, Martinez said.

The club came up with the idea of usingthe game Monopoly as a model, and fillingeach of the spaces with a local business.

The kids would make their way aroundthe board, spending money at the variousstops.

Their aims were a bit ambitious, Martinezsaid.

“There’s 22 squares on a Monopolyboard. Do you what it’s like to get 22 busi-nesses?” Martinez said.

But he admires their optimism.“That’s the beauty of children. They

reach for the moon. They really do.”They didn’t get 22 business, but they did

get Sagat Computer Inc., Parks Fiat of WesleyChapel, Hyundai of Wesley Chapel, WesleyChapel Nissan, Bank of America, Wells FargoBank, Busch Gardens, Pilote Bank and BrightHouse.

The FBLA members also experiencedsomething that businesses encounter all ofthe time, Martinez said. If one plan doesn’twork, you come up with another one.

“This is real-world stuff,” said Martinez, who teaches sixth-grade World History.

Crystal Enger was there from WesleyChapel Nissan, showing off a black 370ZNissan.

The kids lined up for a turn to sit insidethe car.

As they waited for their turn, they askedquestions. “Does that have a lot of torque?”one student wanted to know. “How muchhorsepower does it have?” asked another.

Enger was clearly enjoying herself.“I think it’s nice,” she said. It gives stu-

dents a chance “to think about thingsthey’ve never thought about before,” shesaid.

Seth Raigoza, a member of Weightman’sFBLA chapter, said he was having a goodtime.

“The kids get to play games and to hearabout business.”

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOCrystal Enger enjoyed showing off a sports car from Wesley Chapel Nissan to children atChester Taylor Elementary in Zephyrhills. Enger said the kids seemed to enjoy asking herquestions about the car, and she enjoyed seeing them have a chance to think about thingsthey might not have considered before.

Brandon Butts got a break when he was12 years old — working as an apprentice ina computer repair shop.

Months later, a promised job never mate-rialized. But his experience at the repairshop set him on a path toward becoming asuccessful businessman with his own repairshop, Anything Computers, 38501 Fifth Ave.,in Zephyrhills.

Now, 16 years after his youthful appren-ticeship, the 28-year-old Butts wants to payit forward.

He wants to give other computer geeksan opportunity to learn skills to either landa job at his shop or to work somewhere elsein the IT or technology industries.

At the very least, they’ll have a chance towalk away with a wealth of computerknowledge.

When Butts was an apprentice, he dideverything from mopping floors to fixingcomputers. He didn’t get the job he hadhoped for, but he said the experience wasimportant.

"It kind of mapped what I am today.Without the apprenticeship, I wouldn't bewhat I am today,” Butts said.

He wants to open a similar door of op-portunity for today’s youth.

He’s reaching out to local high schoolstudents who want to become interns.

Butts and his employees will train the in-terns, who will provide free diagnosis andrepairs on computers.

To build up an inventory of computersto use in the program, Butts invites peoplefrom the community to bring in computersthat need a repair.

The labor to repair the computer is free, but patrons must pay for any necessary soft-ware or parts, Butts said.

Butts plans to take on about three in-terns at a time for 90 to 120 days of training.

He’s looking for interns who are at least13 years old, but will consider younger ap-plicants.

"I've known 10-year-olds who can buildtheir own computer and are matureenough," Butts said.

The first graduate of his training program

— 18-year-old Pierce McMenamin — landeda part-time job at Anything Computers afterlearning the basics of computer repairs dur-ing a summer internship.

"I never knew how to do any of thisstuff. Now it feels awesome because I haveknowledge,” said McMenamin, a senior atPasco High School.

Learning how to remove a computervirus or how to respond when a computercrashes weren’t part of the learning curve athigh school, McMenamin said.

The 18-year-old said he wound up in theinternship program partly because he waslooking for a summer job and party becausehis dad and Butts are friends.

A little more than a week ago, a new in-tern arrived.

Zephyrhills resident Jesse McGee, 24, anengineering student at St. PetersburgCollege, said he’s a “little techie at heart.”

No matter what job he holds in the fu-ture, McGee said he knows that computerand technology skills are essential.

"This is how it's going to be from hereon out. I might as well learn."

Schedules for interns can be flexible, asthe students must juggle schoolwork andthe apprenticeship.

Butt said almost 80 percent of computertroubles the shop encounters are related toviruses. Sometimes a computer needs atune-up. Other times a system must be re-built from scratch.

"We've seen almost every problem underthe sun," Butts says. "I want to build up theinterns and keep them here. But no matterwhat the job market, they'll have a skill."

As a youngster, Butts was interested incomputers but wasn't certain of a career. His apprenticeship led to a job at anothercomputer repair shop and eventually work-ing with computers became a full-time gig.

Butts opened his first shop in 2009 onMain Street in the midst of the country'sdownward economic spiral. The shop sur-vived, and three years later he relocated toFifth Avenue.

"I wanted to be on Fifth Avenue, the mainpart of downtown," Butts said. “It's classic."

While looking to give young people new

opportunities, Butts also is looking towardexpanding his shop in Zephyrhills into afranchise, and to market socially responsiblemobile applications to a national audience.

One of his patented devices, known asQuiet Zone, is a mobile application market-ed to establishments such as movie theaters, churches and schools that have a need to si-lence cellphones.

His other patented device, DriveTAB, canbe installed in vehicles to prevent textingwhile driving.

Butts said he’s proud of his accomplish-ments, but he noted, "A lot of peopleweren't as lucky as I was.”

He hopes his future graduates will findtheir own path to success with the skillsthey learn at Anything Computers.

For more information about this intern-ship program, contact Anything Computersat (813) 364-1737, or visit their website atMainStreetComputerShop.com.

Internships aim to offer new possibilities

FRED BELLET/PHOTOSBrandon Butts is owner of AnythingComputers. Here, he makes a pointabout how important the internship programhas been for those wanting to further theircareer in the computer repair and IT busi-ness.

Anything Computers intern, at left, Jesse McGee, 24, and former intern and now store techni-cian Pierce McMenamin, 18, both of Zephyrhills, man the front end of the store and tackletechnical issues for customers and stay busy resolving the computer issues of customers.

AROUND THE PARKS

Be as busy as you like at Grand HorizonsBy Helene RubensteinGrand Horizons

The month of January continues withmore fun and many activities for GrandHorizons residents.

On Jan. 9, there were approximately 44residents who were at Cheddars inBrandon. We had several tables and the serv-ice was excellent. Everyone loved theirmeals, and some people took home por-tions of their lunch. The menu consisted of alarge variety, and people had trouble choos-ing their meals as everything looked sogood.

Cheddars is known for its onion rings, and I certainly see why they say that as therings are delicious.

On Jan. 10, we had another movie nightin the community center. Cheryl Leonehosted this activity, and approximately 20people attended. They were all treated tothe movie “Grown Ups,” and from what I un-derstand, it was a cute movie and had thepeople laughing.

Individual dishes were brought, so therewere many nibbles. There was a guest whoattended this function, and they had a cele-bration in which they gave everyone apiece of cake. There was popcorn served, because how can you attend a picture show

without popcorn? There was one cute part in the evening

when Colleen Smart Crandall was on the

of Mexican Train every Monday night andJan. 12 was no exception. We had several ta-bles of domino players, and you could hearsqueals of delight coming from the peoplethat were playing. Remarks were goingaround the room like, “My train hasn’t leftthe station,” or “This sure is a short train,”“You’ll Get Yours” and more. It is always afun game and so much conversation goeson. Everyone has a good time.

Pinochle afternoon was Jan. 13, and sev-eral of the residents came to the communitycenter for a friendly game. This game is fastmoving, and you sure have to be on yourtoes. It is a fun game with loads of bantergoing on.

On Jan. 14, hand and foot is played in thecommunity center and several people at-tend while there are some others playingpoker on the other side of theroom. Needless to say, the community cen-ter is packed with the men and womenplaying one game or other. Once again, youcan hear friendly conversation going on, andthe people that are there really enjoy them-selves. Billiards also was played in theafternoon on this day.

There are other activities includingmahjong, euchre, shuffleboard and more. The saying goes that “you can keep as busyas you like.”

By Ian Marwick Happy Days

Happy New Year! Was it just afew days ago that this wish wasgiven? Maybe it was Feliz AnoNuevo, Bonne Annee, Buon Annoor Olde Lang Syne. Your lan-guage or heritage has no impacton the universal wish tomankind — to have a new startin all your endeavors and sup-port the strengths you alreadyhave.

What a simple but deep aspi-ration. If we look at thecross-section of our winter resi-dents, we have all the aboveheritages, plus a few more.

People are the same every-where, with the same goals andwishes. This was proven on NewYear’s Eve when 2014 was gen-tly eased out the door and 2015was happily welcomed.

The hall was decorated, thetables clothed and the buffet

spread with goodies. Thedeejay cracked his knuck-les, the dancers flexedtheir toes, and smilesspread wide over rosycheeks. Wow, this had themakings of a great party, and it was!

The party also was thefirst official function of ournew king and queen for2015, Dick and MaggieJohnson of Sherburne, NewYork.

Long may your reign beas successful as your firstnight.

Our resident deejay, JimHowe, and his wife Nevaida,as usual kept everyone offthe chairs, especially with aspot dance called (we allhave that urge to win).Luckily our dance mastersalso showed up: RandyGuisso with the Macarena;Dan Olson, the chicken

dance; Linda Jenkins and Toni Fischer, theline dance; plus more. The happy crowd, however, did not require any help when itcame to just having a go at it.

Spot dances, door prizes, flower draws, plus the buffet kept up the mood.

Well, the New Year was opened. Now wehave to fill it to the brim for the next fewmonths until those northern breezes callagain. This is a no-brainer.

The monthly calendar of activities, plusthe special ones that are now becomingpart of the tradition, easily accomplishesthis.

Sports, we have them, even a few guyswho think they qualify.

Games, almost every day, even the onesthat require cards.

Crafts, yes indeed, and some very craftypeople.

Of course, Friday and Saturday jam ses-sions for the pickers and grinners.

And, food! Every month the calendar getsthe taste buds flowing. Mmmm.

Mark your calendars for Goofy Golf onFeb. 7. Get our your goofy hats and stuff, andsign up at the hall.

The year 2015 has just begun, but wesense a need to plan our days, and fit inwith those special activities that tickle ourfancy.

From burns to slips to trips, bathroomscan be hazardous. In fact, hundreds of thou-sands of injuries occur in the bathroomannually, according to the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Hot water can be a dangerous bathroomperil. More than half a million scald burnsoccur in the U.S. annually according to theCDC. Prevent “shower shock” by settingyour water heater at a maximum of 120 de-grees F.

Another potentially dangerous bathroomactivity is getting in and out of the bathtub.

Adding grab bars, hand grips or tub gripsaround your bathtub or shower can helpyou keep your balance

These safety features don’t need to lookdrab or institutional. Brands like Moen aremaking such fixtures available in a variety ofstyles and finishes to complement bathroomdécor.

Women who shave in the shower alsoneed to take extra care. A shower seat canhelp to avoid slips in the shower. To makethis option practical, a handheld shower-head can help you to maneuver water easilyfrom a seated position.

Special to The Laker/Lutz New

Life’s focus in today’s society often is onconsumerism -- from having the latest gadg-ets to possessing the latest status symbols.

Regardless of your religious beliefs, youmay be looking for ways to find moremeaning in your life.

Here are three ways to possibly find thatenlightenment:

• Spend more time with your family andclose friends. Turn off the TV. Ignore yourlatest text message. Linger in the companyof each other — whether that’s over a deli-cious meal or on a long walk. Giving yourloved ones your undivided attention canbring you closer together.

• Volunteer your time and talents to helpothers. You may have a packed schedule, but with a little effort, you may be able to

find time to set aside for some volunteerwork to help you connect with others inyour community.

• Give yourself time to be introspective. There is plenty of great literature availableto help you reflect and explore your ownspirituality. One new title, “Coming Home, ASpiritual and Religious Dialogue,” by StarChang, who has studied religious scrip-tures, history and spiritual books for years, delves into the teachings of the likes ofBuddha, Jesus, Plato and Muhammad. Thebook seeks to help readers navigate theirown path by discovering which teachingsapply to them and how to incorporatethem into a modern lifestyle. This readingcan be especially beneficial to those look-ing for more meaning around the holidayseason.

First impressions matter, especially whenyou’re trying to land a new job.

A top-notch resume and cover letter canhelp get your foot in the door, but only youcan seal the deal.

Follow these tips to help ensure thatyou make a positive first impression thatwill help turn that job interview into a joboffer.

• Be a good listener. Being engagedwhen others are talking is just as important— or perhaps even more important — thanwhat you say. Maintain good eye contactand ask relevant questions to demonstratethat you’re interested in what’s being said.

• Anticipate questions that you willbe asked so you are prepared with in-telligent, confident and articulateresponses. Be sure that you have definedyour strengths and weaknesses in advance,so when hard questions come up in the in-terview, you’ll be able to handle them withease.

• Be sure to be rested before head-

ing to the interview. You’ll look fresherand will think more clearly.

• Be ready to explain any gaps in your re-sume. If you have taken time off from yourfield to pursue a passion for travel, for in-stance, be ready to talk about that and toexplain how it has helped you professional-ly.

• Prepare your 30-second elevatorpitch to communicate your strengthsand goals. You never know where a con-versation with a hiring manager may lead.Be sure to tailor that pitch to every personyou meet, so it sounds natural and not re-hearsed.

• Be sure that your LinkedIn profileis current.

• Dress to impress. A unique acces-sory may help break the ice and start aconversation.

In the professional realm, presentationmatters from your social media profile toyour suit and tie.

Be sure that you showcase the best ver-sion of yourself.

COURTESY OF PASCO-HERNANDO STATE COLLEGE

Club helps to empower students through readingThe Pasco-Hernando State College Synergy Sociology Club hosted a book drive to collectgently used books for kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Students donated 1,276books to help children at Moon Lake and Cypress elementary schools, Family Partnerships,Sunrise Domestic Violence Shelter, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Tampa Bay, PHSCTodayCare, and the Spring Hill Head Start Program. The club also received 10 additionalboxes of books donated by a retired Hernando County teacher.

that may well lead to growth and higherprices in the market.

“One of the key reasons is pent-up de-mand, Yun said.

“We have 37 million additional peopleliving in the country and yet we are essen-tially getting the same home sales,” hesaid.

“We have lower mortgage rates today,”Yun said, adding that he expects those to in-crease. But they’ll be at historically lowlevels.

He also expects the pool of buyers to in-crease because the tight credit market iseasing.

There are also more buyers coming intothe market, he noted.

“Many people who went through shortsales, many people who went through fore-closures — they went into the penalty box. Now, they’re beginning to come out of thepenalty box,” Yun said.

An improved job market is another partof the equation.

“There’s more people working in theTampa region, so there’s more potentialhomebuyers,” Yun said.

But housing inventory is tight, which re-stricts the market, he explained.

The builders report that they don’t havetrouble selling the houses they build, but

not as many homes are being built, Yun said.“When the housing market bust came,

many went to Texas and North Dakota — oildrilling,” he said.

Another problem is the tight credit mar-ket for mom-and-pop builders, Yun said.

“New financial regulations have reallymade it difficult for the local communitybanks to make those construction loans,” hesaid.

“It was mom and pop who actually builtmore homes than the national builders, intotal,” Yun said.

“Homebuilders who used to get loans tobuild 20 homes are now able to get loans tobuild one home. They build it, they sell it,and then they repay the bank the moneyand they can get a loan for one more. So, it’sone at a time, rather than getting 20 all atonce.”

The lack of new housing has an impacton home sales, he said.

“We asked consumers, how many homesdo you want to see before signing the con-tract? They will say they want to see 10 to15 homes,” Yun said.

Besides creating forecasts for theNational Association of Realtors, he also par-ticipates in many economic forecast panels, including The Blue Chip Council and theHarvard University Industrial EconomistsCouncil. In 2008, USA Today listed Yun asamong the top 10 economic forecasters inthe country.

ture speaker of the Florida House ofRepresentatives said, “you wind up with agovernment that’s more transparent, moreaccountable and more efficient.

“This is just an opportunity for us to godown a path and see if there isn’t ways thatwe can create a government that’s even bet-ter than the existing government,” Corcoransaid.

Under state law, either a majority ofcounty commissioners or a petition signedby 15 percent of the county’s registered vot-ers can create a charter commission. InPasco, that would require more than 46,000signatures.

Once a panel is formed, it has 18 monthsto complete a charter that Pasco voterswould adopt or reject.

Fasano opposes the creation of a chartergovernment.

“I’m not a fan of charter government,”Fasano said.

“There’s no question, when you havecharter government, taxes will go up. Noquestion, when you have a charter govern-ment, you will have another layer ofgovernment that people will have to getthrough,” Fasano said.

“Think about charter governments inother counties. All you have to do is look atMiami-Dade, what a mess. It’s layer of gov-ernment after layer of government afterlayer of government. It is more taxes putupon the people of a community that isstruggling already.”

Pasco County attorney JeffreySteinsnyder said there are 20 charter coun-ties operating across the state’s 67 counties.

“If you look historically, across the state, most of the charters that got adopted werebecause of issues between the county com-mission and the constitutional officers orthe county commission and the cities,”Steinsnyder said.

Charter government is not a panacea, butit can be a good vehicle for a government toform its own way, he said.

The charter dictates the shape that thegovernment will take, he said.

“Government can be a much strongerform of government, if the charter so pro-vides. It can be a much weaker form ofgovernment, if the charter so provides,”Steinsnyder said.

On one hand, it may solve some prob-lems. On the other, it may create moreproblems than it solves, the county attorneysaid.

He also noted: “Once you turn that overto a charter review commission, you’rebound to put it on the ballot, and whateverthe voters say, up or down, that’s it.”

A charter can include such things as sin-gle-member districts for countycommissioners, terms limits, an electedcounty administrator or an elected countymayor and other changes to the composi-tion of local government.

Corcoran said that Pasco’s legislative del-egation wants local voters to decide howthey are governed.

“How we govern right now, is dictated tous from Tallahassee. I’m saying that’s notgood enough,” Corcoran said. “I think thesystem that we’re governed under should bedictated by Pasco residents and controlledby Pasco County voters. You do that, you’regoing to have a more accountable system ofgovernment.”

He said he’s committed to raise moneyand collect signatures to create a chartercommission.

But the delegation is open to a proposalby Commission Chairman Ted Schrader toform the charter commission — with com-missioners choosing 10 of the members anddelegation members choosing the otherfive.

Schrader said, “If it’s going to be done, itneeds to be done in Pasco County.” But headded: “In no means am I strong proponentof establishing charter government. I don’twant anybody to get that idea.”

Instead, he said, he’d like more informa-tion on the issue.

“This is all new dialogue to me,” Schradersaid.

FILE PHOTOSRep. Richard Corcoran thinks votersshould get to decide whether to reshapePasco County’s government.

Tax collector Mike Fasano thinks a shift tocharter government would lead to highertaxes and more layers of bureaucracy.

Commission Chairman Ted Schrader saidhe needs more information before takinga stand on the issue.

Commissioner Kathryn Starkey wants toresearch the issue more before dis-cussing it at greater length.

PASCO, from page 1A

Commissioner Kathryn Starkey alsowants to know more.

“Let’s just do a little homework beforewe start the next phase. I personally have al-ways wondered, would we better off as acharter or worse off as a charter?” Starkeysaid.

She’d like to talk to some other countiesand to have a workshop to discuss the issue.

Commissioners put the issue off untilthey can obtain more information and dis-cuss how they’d like to proceed.

There was one point that opponentsseemed to agree on, however.

Any charter issue on the ballot — needsto go on a presidential election ballot to en-sure the highest degree possible for voterparticipation.

New technologies flyinto Zephyrhills airport

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Leaders of the Zephyrhills EconomicDevelopment Council recently toured theZephyrhills Municipal Airport base of TurinAviation Group Inc., getting a close look atunmanned aerial systems — or drones— and a glimpse into what’s becoming amajor industry nationwide.

That visit would later lead to PascoCounty’s first regional Unmanned AerialSystems Commercial Markets Conference atPasco-Hernando State College’s PorterCampus at Wiregrass Ranch. It was organ-ized by the Pasco Economic DevelopmentCouncil, and attracted around 80 people in-terested in learning more about drones.

Two people attending the conferenceand paying close attention to the growingindustry were Zephyrhills airport managerMike Handrahan and Greater ZephyrhillsChamber of Commerce executive directorVonnie Mikkelsen. Their goal was to heartestimony by entrepreneurs, and exploremarket opportunities for Zephyrhills.

The event — sponsored by the FloridaHigh Tech Corridor, the Tampa BayPartnership, USF Connect and others — in-cluded panel discussions on commercialapplications in the fields of mapping, preci-sion agriculture, wildlife preservation, anddisaster search and recovery.

Other discussions focused on meetingwork force demands through higher educa-tion programs and training, federal and stateregulation, and industry legislation.

Cycle of Life: Seniors stay fit on two wheelsBy Michael [email protected]

If you see Charlie Griffiths riding his bi-cycle in Zephyrhills, the 70-year-old mightbe on a little ride just to keep the bloodpumping.

Or he just might be training for a 40Krace.

“Charlie’s always been a cyclist,” said hiswife, Mary Griffiths. The couple actually metonline a few years ago on a special websitefor fitness-conscious singles. Now Mary, 63,does a bit of riding herself: Both of themwon cycling medals at the recent FloridaInternational Senior Games and StateChampionships in their respective agegroups.

But while Mary has been more of aswimmer and even did some scuba diving,Charlie is the one who’s always preferredcycling. He joined a racing club at 16 in hisnative Liverpool, England, but had to give itup when family demands came first.

Later in life he got back into riding, andwhen he retired and moved to Florida 10years ago, he saw an advertisement for localraces. Being in good shape, he decided tojoin the 55-and-over age group and signedup for a race.

He finished last.“They just killed me. I couldn’t believe

what level these people were at in that agegroup,” Charlie recalled.

Not being one to back down from a chal-lenge, he kept at it and eventually workedhis way into the top half of the competitors. He began training regularly and improvedhis strength and skills. In addition to doing20K and 40K road races at the SeniorGames, Charlie also tackles other races, in-cluding 100-mile cycling events.

As a result, their living room is now filledwith medals and trophies documenting hissuccessful return to the sport he loved as aboy. But it’s the other rewards that motivatehim to keep riding.

“Really, what keeps me going with this, isit’s keeping me from getting old,” Charliesaid. Seventy was old 40 years ago, but Idon’t feel any different.”

While they’ve both found success cy-cling, Mary is quick to point out that it’s notany one activity that holds a secret to feelingyounger. It’s more about finding somethingyou like to do and sticking with it.

“It’s activity,” she said. “Find somethingthat you’re passionate about and you do it.”Some activities lend themselves to groupparticipation, she said. Runners, for example, often go out together and keep each othermotivated.

Even physical disabilities don’t have tokeep seniors from staying active. The SeniorGames also has competitions for activitieslike bean bag tossing and table tennis. Marybelieves that even participating in non-stren-uous games, which still challenge themmentally, can be good for seniors.

“They’ve got 40 different sports,” she saidof the Senior Games. “What if you aren’t real-ly physically able? That doesn’t mean youshouldn’t be active.”

And Charlie agrees. He’d love to seemore people out walking around, even in acasual setting. It’s become too common forseniors, and people in general, to settle intoa sedentary lifestyle and miss out on thehealth, social and mental benefits of beingmore active.

“You look around these (communities)where we are here and it’s just incrediblehow people waste away. And some of themare younger than me,” he said. “It’s just a wayof extending you’re life. That’s the way I seeit. Stay active as long as you can.”

Charlie is encouraged by people whocall him an inspiration, and he enjoys ridingand keeping up with riders many years hisjunior. Neither has any plans to slow downor abandon their active lifestyle, and theyhope people of all ages will find the motiva-tion to begin improving their own liveswith a little bit of activity.

“Find a friend, and set an appointmenttime and commit to meeting at that timeevery day and start walking,” Mary advises.“That’s the easiest thing, it doesn’t cost any-thing and if you did it, you don’t know whatthe next step will be.”

While the benefits can be realized by any-one, Charlie believes a lack of activity canespecially hurt seniors who can’t afford to sitaround and watch their golden years go by.

“If you’re used to a lethargic lifestyle, youneed to change. When you’re younger, maybe people don’t feel it as badly. But lifeflashes by, and suddenly you are a potato,”he said. “Just get out and do something, whether it be walking, running; make the at-tempt. Make the effort and you’ll enjoy it.You’ll meet so many interesting people.”

The Wiregrass Ranch boys’ tennis teamearned a share of the Class 3A state champi-onship last season. As a result, they knewexpectations would be high headed into2015. For his part, coach David Wilson hasalready admitted he doesn’t think the teamwill be as good as last year.

He thinks it will be better.“This will be the deepest team we’ve

had,” Wilson said of the current lineup. “Weactually added depth and strength to ourteam.”

Part of that depth and strength will comefrom a familiar last name.

Augie Moreno, defending state championand a top player on the team, will welcomehis little brother, Daniel, to the squad as afreshman. And with the championship teammostly intact from last year, the Bulls look tobe stronger than ever.

That’s a significant statement, sinceWiregrass Ranch has had successful tennisteams almost from its inception. Wilson hasbuilt a strong program since he took the jobfor the school’s opening athletic season in2006-07. While the tennis title was the firststate championship in school history, it wastheir third trip to the state tournament. Andthe district title was nothing new, either.Wilson said it was the team’s fifth-straightdistrict championship.

Part of the team’s success stems from theexcellent competition they face in practice.Wilson said the top players are all very com-petitive, and are capable of beating eachother on any given day. So, honing theirskills against each other makes the teamstronger.

“If you’re always playing against compet-itive players within your own team, thenyou’re just going to keep getting better,”Wilson said.

Senior Alejandro Feliciano, who wasranked fourth on the team last season, agrees that the team has taken steps for-ward as it tries to defend its title.

“We actually have better players thisyear,” he said.

Feliciano is one of those great players, with a United States Tennis Association rank-ing inside the top 100 and a national rankingaround 306 for players 18 and under.

While sheer talent gives Wiregrass Rancha clear advantage over most schools,Feliciano said that their coach plays a bigrole as well. Instead of trying to force themto adapt to his strategies, he gives them theleeway to simply put their talent on displaywhile he provides support however he can.

“I think it’s the fact that he bonds withus as if he were somebody our own age,” hesaid. “It’s like he’s one of us.”

Wilson is part of the tennis program be-cause he had a characteristic nobody elsehad when the school began athletic play: Hewas willing to do it.

“When I took the job, nobody else want-ed it,” he said. A recreational player, heknows that many of his players can beathim on the court. But his job is to providesupport, let them have fun and create a pos-

itive experience that keeps them wanting toparticipate in high school sports.

Creating that desire is no easy accom-plishment, since many players have theirown personal coaches, a bright future intennis and don’t really need the high schoolteam to further their careers.

“I think that’s the one thing that makesme the proudest, is that kids want to play inmy program,” Wilson said. “My saying for allmy sports (Wilson is also the school’s boys’soccer coach and athletic director) is the ex-perience outweighs the outcome. If it’s nota great experience for them, what’s thesense of doing it?”

Part of that experience includes hittingthe road to face elevated competition.Wiregrass Ranch will travel to Florida StateUniversity in Tallahassee next month to face

Pensacola Catholic High School, one of thestate’s top tennis teams. In March, they’lltravel to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the na-tional high school tournament.

Wilson isn’t concerned about a letdownafter achieving a state title. The team is fullof skilled players with plenty of experienceand a good working relationship together. But they also know that they had to sharetheir state title with Barron Collier HighSchool in Naples, since they finished withthe same amount of points in the competi-tion.

Being “co-champion” helps to motivatethem to claim the title for themselves in2015, Wilson said.

“The fact that we weren’t outright cham-pions by ourselves, we still have somethingto prove,” he said.

Wiregrass Ranch is ready to defend title

Things to considerwhen choosing a vetThe Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Choosing a health care provider for yourpet is one of the most important decisionsthat you’ll make, so you may want to consid-er these questions and answers posted onthe American Society for the Prevention ofCruelty to Animal’s website.

The advice comes from veterinarianLouise Murray, author of “Vet Confidential: AnInsider's Guide to Protecting Your Pet'sHealth.”

How Do I Find a Vet?The American Animal Hospital Association

(AAHA) evaluates veterinary practices on thequality of their facilities, staff, equipment andpatient care. Search the organization’s web-site at HealthyPet.com for a list of accreditedvets in your area.

Asking friends, family and trusted neigh-bors for a recommendation is a good idea, too. People who have a keen interest in theirdog’s health and well-being are particularlyhelpful sources.

How Do I Decide Which Vet isRight for My Dog?

When selecting a vet, it’s a good idea to:• Arrange the first appointment to be

without your dog so you can talk to the vet-erinarian and get an overall feel for thefacilities.

• Pay attention to the space: Is it clean?Modern? Well-organized?

• Ask how many vets there are on staff?Do vets share patients and cover for eachother during absences?

• Do you have a good rapport with thevet? Effective communication is essential toany health care relationship. Be sure to askany questions you have. Most vets appreciateit when their clients take an interest in theirpet’s health care.

What Questions Should I Ask When I’m Selecting a Vet?

Your questions may vary, depending onthe reason for your visit, but this list of ques-tions can serve as a guide:

• Is the practice accredited?• How are overnight patients monitored?• Does the vet refer patients to special-

ists?• How are patients evaluated before anes-

thesia and surgery?• Does the practice have licensed veteri-

nary technicians on staff?• What is the protocol for pain manage-

ment?Murray also offers a checklist, on the

ASPCA website, of what to expect when youare bringing your dog to the vet for the firsttime.

Those questions may include:• How long have you had your dog?• Where did you get your dog?• Has your dog been vaccinated? Against

what diseases?• What brand of pet food do you feed

your dog?• Is your dog’s appetite normal? How

much does he eat?• How much water does your dog drink?• Is your dog urinating and defecating reg-

ularly? Does he ever have accidents inside?• Is your dog displaying any of the follow-

ing symptoms: Coughing, sneezing, vomiting,diarrhea?

• Has your dog lost or gained weight?• Have you noticed any significant

changes in your dog’s behavior?• Has your dog ever suffered a serious

health issue? If so, what treatment did he re-ceive?

For more guidance on pet care issues, visit ASPCA.org.
