“Studying at Lancaster University Management School has really benefited my own personal development as a manager. The course has given me a lot of confidence, showing me new ways to lead and manage my team, and had a great impact on my company’s practices.”

The Lancaster MBA transforms ambitious managers into strategic, responsible leaders, providing you not only with the theoretical knowledge and understanding necessary to achieve your goals, but also with the self-awareness and practical experience required to be truly outstanding.

Whether you are considering the Full-time MBA or the Executive MBA, at Lancaster University you will be joining a leading global management school that’s well-connected and well-resourced, attracting expertise from across the business world. The contacts you will make here, coupled with your enhanced approach to business, will stay with you forever.

I’m delighted that you are considering joining us during our 30th Anniversary of the MBA. Here you will be part of an established programme, where you may take the single biggest step towards enhancing your career trajectory.

The Lancaster advantage is well recognised, with the Financial Times ranking us first in the world for Corporate Strategy and first in the UK for Careers and Corporate Social Responsibility. This is all testament, not just to our outstanding academic pedigree and uncompromising commitment to excellence, but to the success of our exceptional alumni.

I wish you every success at this important juncture and would urge you to visit us, talk to our staff, and meet our students and alumni.

We all became more accomplished people with a broader horizon and I consider the MBA one of the best and most rewarding years of my life so far. Working with people from over 20 countries on highly demanding projects taught me patience and tolerance, and deepened one of the core messages of Lancaster’s programme: The answer is rarely simple and there is always more than one way to do something. Working with this mindset is something. I learned to be comfortable with that, which is something that will help anyone no matter which field they turn to after their MBA.

For me the most valuable thing taught on the Lancaster MBA was not one specific subject, but the way of thinking that is strengthened in all of Lancaster’s modules. The extraordinary strategy modules are only one example of that. I learned to question everything very carefully, take little for granted and, most importantly, learned how to distinguish a good argument from one that sounds big but is really just hot air. At Lancaster we got the theoretical and critical thinking skills to judge the arguments that cross a manager’s path on a daily basis. For me the Lancaster MBA was as much a lesson in ‘real life’ as it was an academic programme.

From its inception, the Lancaster MBA has provided relevant and cutting-edge content to students. The Lancaster MBA programme aims to deliver a challenging and rigorous curriculum that excites, inspires, and transforms students from across the world.

Modern organisations face a volatile and changing environment. As such, they need leaders who are strategic and responsible. A strategic, responsible approach, grounded in real-world experience, allows leaders to overcome challenges and find opportunity in everything, from the environment to staff development and retention. It should guide our thinking at all stages of business, from supply chain and production, through to retail and the customer.

These principles—strategy, responsibility and practice—underpin the Lancaster MBA. Our programme delivers impactful teaching from internationally respected academics and leading business practitioners. It is an experience that blends study with applied action learning throughout the programme.

Strategy

Organisational strategy is the art of planning, which ensures the best possible results for all stakeholders. But, it is also an ethos that transforms good managers into inspirational leaders. Adopting a strategic mindset allows leaders to work through challenges, create opportunities, and innovate on an everyday basis. Strategy is fundamental to organising and essential in all business functions, including marketing, finance, HRM, and business development.

As a cornerstone of the Lancaster MBA, strategy is foregrounded in the programme curriculum. In addition, we offer elective modules that allow students to specialise in more specific aspects of organisational strategy.

Responsibility

Business as usual is no longer acceptable. Responsible management is world changing. It’s the tool through which we overcome environmental challenges, support staff wellbeing and ensure a healthy, sustainable future for all. It is vital to the success of any 21st century organisation, and should be reflected in the qualities of staff and in the discussions in the boardroom; everything from emotional quotient to sustainability accounting.

The Lancaster MBA considers responsibility in all aspects of business, ensuring graduates are equipped to make good decisions and lead mindfully. Specialist aspects of responsibility include cyber security, mindfulness and leading responsibly.

Practice

As a research led institution, our teaching in informed by the theoretical vanguard. However, it is only when this is put into the context of the real world that we can truly understand the value and impact.

As such, the Lancaster MBA integrates practice into the programme. Teaching on the MBA is grounded in real life, and students are encouraged to apply everything they learn.

In addition to case studies and mock business projects, our programme features a significant amount of live client and real project experience. As well as allowing you to put theory into practice, these develop your strategic, global, entrepreneurial and responsible mindsets.

30 Years of Business Networks

The North West of the UK was at the heart of the First Industrial Revolution, and Lancaster is at the heart of in the fourth revolution, Industry 4.0.

As such, Lancashire and the UK as a whole is a hub of bustling business and is rich with opportunities. We regularly work with internationally well-known British companies such as Barclay’s Bank and National Rail.

But, not all opportunities exist in large organisations. There were an estimated 5.6 million small businesses in the UK at the start of 2018. This accounts for over 99% of all private sector businesses; increasing to 99.9% when we include medium-sized businesses. Not surprisingly, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) account for 60% of all private sector employment.* The Lancaster MBA programme purposefully connects our students with British SMEs, including entrepreneurial start-up companies.

Over the last 30 years, we have cultivated strong relationships with the UK’s vast entrepreneurial network.

Our efforts were recognised when we were awarded the Small Business Charter, which celebrates the effective role we play in supporting small businesses, local economies, and student entrepreneurship.

Lancaster University Management School is also home to the country’s largest network of Entrepreneurs in Residence. This thriving community of business owners and entrepreneurial leaders contribute to our programme by informing teaching and curriculum development, mentoring students, and presenting at masterclasses.

Connections with organisations are also maintained through our alumni. As a result, the Lancaster MBA is a gateway to opportunity.

We are dedicated to creating the best learning environment possible. The Management School is designed for collaboration; it is a place where our students challenge convention, push boundaries, and shape agendas; a place for the very best research-led teaching and engagement.

Over £170 million has been invested into the campus since 2013, with up to £250 million planned over the next five years. The Lancaster University Management School Space Programme is one such example of a multimillion pound project that will enhance student experience, with a new five storey

The MBA broadened my knowledge base tremendously and gave me the confidence to converse in and constructively contribute to all aspects of my organisation’s value chain.

From marketing to logistics, I was provided with a well-stocked business toolkit, together with a new network of friends met on the journey. The MBA programme took me out of my comfort zone. It was a challenging and rewarding journey, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

On graduating, I was promoted to Business Process and Applications Director. I am also one of the mentors in my organisation’s targeted leadership programme, which is a fantastic scheme for lower and middle managers looking to progress to be our next business leaders. And, I continue to explore new opportunities to learn and develop.

“The teaching on the course is excellent and it opened my eyes to a lot of subjects that were not in my undergraduate degree. In terms of soft skills, I feel a lot more confident at work. I think about things differently now.”

What did you do before joining the Lancaster MBA?As with the majority of computer engineers, my first job was as a software developer. Looking for something less technical, I decided to venture into the business world and joined PwC, working as a business consultant for projects in various industries. Finally, I joined Claro, one of the largest ICT organisations in Latin America, where I brought together both my technical and business interests.

Why did you decide to do an MBA?In my last role, I had a lot of freedom to try different approaches and methods to create and further develop products. However, this also meant my tasks involved a high degree of complexity and risk. Because of this, I found myself constantly studying after hours trying to learn new skills related to marketing, finance, operations and strategy, among others.

I felt that to be a good product manager and to thrive in the tech world, I needed to be an expert in both technology and business subjects. Having graduated from a top computer engineering school, UNICAMP, I already had a good technical academic background. However, I felt I still needed to develop my business skillset much further, and that was when I decided to do an MBA. Talking to one of my former bosses, who became my mentor, we agreed that I should look for a world-class MBA, not being restricted by the universities in my home country of Brazil.

Why did you choose the Lancaster MBA?I started looking through the global MBA rankings and universities’ league tables, reading through a range of programme descriptions. I also considered the university culture itself, as I didn’t want a programme that emphasised the mentality of making profit above all else. When assessing my options, I was very careful with marketing strategies from universities that overcharge students for a brand on their CV instead of providing a fruitful learning experience.

In the end, I chose the Lancaster MBA because it had an interesting approach to management that included learning from ancient philosophers, delivering more than just a skill set, but a whole mindset for management.

What did you enjoy most about the Lancaster MBA?The whole MBA journey was interesting. Lancaster is set apart from big urban centres giving a higher level of immersion, allowing for constant reflection on learning experiences. We also developed our self-awareness, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Of course, we also explored typical topics, such as marketing, finance, economics, operations management, strategy, leadership, international business, ethics, digital innovation, entrepreneurship, and human resources. From those, my favourites were the strategy based modules. They covered a wide range of strategy subjects in considerable depth, and the delivery method was a mixture of formal lectures and development of business cases in practice, making it an effective and pleasant learning experience.

How has the MBA benefitted you overall? In the end, the Lancaster programme made me realise that a great MBA is much more than just a course. An MBA should be a fulfilment of the mind; a personal and professional transformational journey that, through theory and practice, helped me better understand the business world in all its uncertainties and paradoxes. It gave me much more confidence to engage with opportunities and face challenges to further develop my career, even beyond my country’s boundaries.

The Executive MBAWhether you want to set up your own business venture, or take your existing career to the next level, the Lancaster Executive MBA gives you the platform to develop your business knowledge and leadership skills whilst continuing to work full time.

The part-time programme has eight core modules that combine online and workshop based teaching during Thursday, Friday and Saturday blocks. The design of the programme gives you the flexibility to tailor your MBA to your area of specialism

whether that is leadership, finance, strategy or management. In addition, there is a specialist elective stream for healthcare professionals, endorsed by the NHS Leadership Academy.

All of the teaching on the programme is informed through Lancaster’s outstanding research pedigree, meaning you will be learning contemporary theories from leading academics and industry professionals. Our assessments aim to transfer this knowledge into practice, with the majority of assessments focusing on your own context.

The Lancaster Executive MBA is a global programme delivered in the UK, Ghana and Malaysia. The elective modules provide you with the perfect opportunity to work and engage with management professionals from different locations around the world.

Designed for You

To embark on two years of intensive study while continuing in your current role is one of the biggest career decisions you will make. Since this demands a significant time commitment, it is vital you choose an Executive MBA that both delivers world-class learning and fits in with your work and home life.

The Executive MBA is designed for ambitious, time-limited professionals who want to optimise their studying by balancing it with work and family life. We understand the pressure of having multiple priorities and the Executive programme is specifically designed to fit with these.

Blended learningWith flexibility being so critical, we have designed the Executive MBA to combine online and face-to-face learning. Each core module is blended with two weeks of online learning before three days face-to-face, allowing you to take control of your progress at your own pace, working at times which are convenient for you.

Modules, interactive workshops and work-based studyThe programme is delivered via a series of highly interactive workshops. These combine new ideas and theories from tutors with in-depth discussion, ensuring you learn as much from each other as you do from us. We employ a range of practical activities designed to reinforce your learning and make it useful for you. In between modules, you will undertake self-study, applying your new knowledge in practice. This is supported by tutors and our virtual learning environment (VLE).

You will then be able to apply all your knowledge to your organisation, essentially acting as a consultant to them and providing contemporary and cutting-edge insights from the forefront of business and management.

Leadership practice and the Mindful ManagerThere is a powerful, practical focus on developing the skills you need to lead others. This programme asks you to consider your fundamental behaviours, attitudes and processes that underpin decision making, with a view to enhancing your thinking. It is designed to shape your development as an aspiring senior manager and help you build the skills to succeed at the most senior levels.

Career developmentThe chances are that you will begin the Executive MBA with specific career objectives in mind. What did you do before joining the Lancaster Executive MBA?Prior to the MBA, I was a commercial Finance Manager leading a small team within a UK-based cash-management company. The role was focused around demand analysis, pricing and costing, and new contract bids.

Why did you decide to do an Executive MBA? I had worked in accountancy and finance for a decade and wanted to expand my knowledge of business more widely. My aim was to develop my leadership and business skills in general. I also wanted to prove to myself that I was capable of achieving a Masters degree.

Why did you choose the Lancaster Executive MBA?Lancaster became my first choice as soon as I attended the Open Day. After speaking to the programme director and attending a sample strategy lecture, I knew it was the perfect fit for me. It ticked all the standard boxes–Quadruple accredited, highly ranked, a great reputation, good location—but it was more than that. Compared to some of the other schools I looked at, there was a strong community feel and I didn’t worry I would get lost in the “impersonal machine” that I perceived might be the case with other MBAs. The focus on mindfulness also gave me the holistic, ethical and inclusive approach to leadership that I was after.

What did you enjoy most about the Lancaster Executive MBA? The people! The cohort was amazing and we quickly became close. Although everyone wanted to excel individually, there wasn’t the “everyone out for themselves” mentality that you might expect from a stereotypical group of high performers. We worked together and helped each other through difficult times. The staff were also great. The lecturers and the support staff go out of their way to help you get through what is, undeniably, a challenging experience.

Sarah O’Rourke, Lancaster Executive MBA graduate and Global Process Manager at Hilti, shares her experience of the Executive MBA.

ChallengingExpectations

How has the Executive MBA benefitted you overall? It gave me a broad toolkit of knowledge and increased my skills base in a way that complemented my existing financial experience. The MBA also took me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to challenge the expectations I held about what I’m capable of and can achieve.

During the MBA, I was promoted into a strategic finance role, focusing on a high-profile project and widening my responsibilities outside of pure finance. I’ve also become more active with causes that mean a lot to me. The MBA helped me to realise I have experience and knowledge that could benefit other people, so I’m finding ways to use everything I’ve learned about leadership, learning, and development to support and mentor young people just starting out.

I’ve also set up a Women in Business network for the Lancaster MBA and Executive MBA alumni and current students. The aim is to connect and grow the community of Lancaster MBA women, and provide a place where women in leadership can inspire and support each other through meet-ups, mentoring and events.

What advice would you give to someone considering an Executive MBA?To do well, you need to make the effort. Some things (like keeping up with the latest TV series) will need to take a back seat until you’re done. Be conscious about where and how you spend your time and you’ll be fine. You also can’t do this without the support of the people around you; whether that’s your partner, your family or your friends.

BenefittingYour OrganisationIn deciding to start a part-time MBA, you will be taking on a two year project that will improve your knowledge of business, and your capability as a manager and leader. This is excellent news for you, but your employer may need a little more information before they will fully support you!

Employers will generally be concerned about three main things:

+ How much time will this take? How often and for how long will you be away from work, and what will the impact be?

+ The cost (if they are sponsoring you).

+ The benefit that the organisation will get by supporting you.

Fortunately, the Lancaster Executive MBA has been designed with these concerns in mind.

TimeThe Lancaster Executive MBA is taught in block modules that run Thursday-Saturday. This means you are only away from work for two days every 6-8 weeks. The majority of assessment is work-based, meaning that when you are working on an assessment after a module, you will be improving your organisation at the same time.

CostLancaster’s Executive MBA is very competitively priced for a fully accredited, high quality MBA. Payment can be spread in four instalments across two academic years, which equates to three budget years for most organisations. So your organisation would not be asked to find the full fee out of one year’s training budget. There are scholarships available, and the new postgraduate loan, which can help with the fee decision.

BenefitOriginally, the Executive MBA was designed with a consortium of businesses who wanted to develop their people and their organisations at the same time. As a consequence, most of the assessments on the course require you to focus on a ‘live’ issue, one that is important to your organisation. Under supervision from a tutor, you use your experience and the ideas learned on the module, to tackle an issue and produce recommendations. This means you get to network internally, develop a more holistic understanding of your organisation, and provide valuable recommendations that will improve the organisation. In addition, our consultancy challenge module will be made available to your organisation, offering a consulting project from a group of experienced managers.

Of course, your organisation also gets a more knowledgeable, capable, motivated and dedicated employee who can improve the business into the future.

Diversity, Flexibility, Impact

Why did you choose the Lancaster Executive MBA?To me what makes it stand out from other business schools is the focus on learning and the learning process, and not just on final outcomes. Of course, the outcomes are really impressive at Lancaster, but there’s such a focus on what you learn and the whole approach to the programme, which I find really interesting and really refreshing in comparison to how other business schools market themselves.

The diversity of the cohort really attracted me, and the range of different professions, backgrounds and sectors involved, from healthcare and charities, through to the corporate sector, and everything in between.

The final things for me are the cost, which I think is competitive, and the location. It’s very easy to get to Lancaster from anywhere in the country so that is attractive to me as well.

How beneficial is the flexibility of the programme? The flexibility of the programme works really well for me and it’s one of the main reasons that I chose to come to Lancaster. I’ve got a full-time job and I also have a young family, so time away from work and time away from home is at a premium. I really like the blended approach between taught experiences at Lancaster and online teaching. The amount of time away from home works really well for my family.

I want to benefit from a taught programme and not only be online, but be able to be more flexible in my work around my family and professional commitments. I want to work with a cohort, and I also want that intensive taught experience, which I think is very hard to replicate online. Being able to come up to Lancaster to do three days on a module, then for that to be supplemented with classes taught through video conferencing and work that I can do around my own working and family commitments works really, really well.

Which element of the programme have you found most interesting so far?I find it very hard to choose an individual module that I find most beneficial because actually, every module has been really fascinating. If anything, I think each one gives you a different lens with which to look at your work; so whether that’s from an economics perspective, an ethical perspective, a marketing perspective, an operations perspective. Instead of just looking at something from my own experience, you think ‘okay how would I look at this now from the perspective of that particular module’. So for me, it’s not just about which individual module is most interesting, it’s about having that range of perspectives.

How have you been able to apply your learning in the workplace and what impact has it had?One of the modules that we do is about ethics and that is really interesting to me. I work in the classical music sector, working in publishing contemporary classical composers. But actually looking at that from an ethics perspective was something we’d never done in a structured way. So as part of the ethics module, we’ve developed a programme of mentoring for young composers in partnership with a prestigious classical music charity. This has directly come from the MBA study, and it is really interesting for our organisation and also really beneficial for the composers on the programme.

Sam Rigby, Lancaster Executive MBA student and Managing Director at Schott Music Ltd, tells us about his Executive MBA experience.
