IELTS Speaking Test Part 2

• At the start of part 2, the examiner will say. “Now in this part, I’m going to give you a topic and I’d like you to talk about it for 1 to 2 minutes. Before you talk, you’ll have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes if you wish. Do you understand? Here is a pencil and some paper for making notes and here is your topic.”

IELTS Speaking Test Individual Talk

• The topics are many and various and may include many things about your personal life: best friend, an older person you know, an exciting time you had when traveling, a shop you know well, a gift you received, your favorite book, a book that you really liked, a time when you were scared, a time when people congratulated you, someone you know who is good at studying, etc…

IELTS Speaking Test Individual Talk

• The examiner will give you a booklet with your topic and some ideas about what to say about your topic. The examiner will also give you a blank piece of paper to make notes with. After letting you think and make notes for 1 minute, the examiner will ask you to begin speaking. You should try to speak for a full 2 minutes until the examiner says to stop.

IELTS Speaking Test Part 2 : Structure

• In this part, it’s a good idea to try and structure your speech. For example: “Today I want to tell you about my favorite book. There are three main reasons why I think Journey to the West is my favorite. The first is….”

• If you can think of 3 reasons or 3 points or 4 qualities or 2 ideas, etc… This will impress the examiner.

IELTS Speaking Test Part 2:Structure

• For some topics, it may be difficult to come up with 3 reasons, or 4 points or whatever.

• If that is the case, try for a story in chronological order or organize it in some other way. If your speech is in random order, it will likely not make as strong an impression on the examiner.

• Another thing to keep in mind for this part would be vocabulary. Perhaps as you think in the 1 minute of preparation time, you can write down good vocabulary words to use in your speech.
