Inside Story

If there’s one thorn in the side of commerce – it’s handling and processing returns from your customers and/orsuppliers. If you recognise this scenario and are looking for a simplified way of organising returns, then solutionsare at hand with the new range of UPS Return Services.

Returning goods made simple

WelcomeHello and welcome to the latest

edition of UPS Forum, our news-

letter created especially for you.

This issue is all about making life

easier, from enhancements to

existing systems to new services

and products that really make a

difference to your business. The

editorial team have compiled a

whole host of articles to ensure you

are kept fully up to date with what

UPS can do for you.

Please note that items for collection, are

returned via the UPS Standard Service.

To calculate the cost of the return service,

simply look up the costs of shipping to that

destination, from your location. Each pack-

age will be rated individually and a nominal

surcharge is applicable on some of the

Return Service options.

Costs of the service and surcharges

can be downloaded from your country

page on www.ups.com, looked up in the

2001 UPS Service and Tariff Guide or

obtained via the call centre.

Return services can be useful, whatever your size or business:■ Manufacturing companies fre-

quently have a requirement for return

services to offer their customers total

peace of mind. Items bought under

warranty and in need of repair can be

more easily returned if the necessary

shipping documentation and pro-

cedures are already established with

suppliers or included with the goods.

■ Medical equipment manufac-

turers can benefit from a straight-

forward returns process for the recall

of obsolete apparatus for updating

or recycling. This ensures that their

customers stay at the forefront of

medical technology at all times.

■ And if you are a virtual business

or sell on-line, then you can help

your customers overcome shopping

nerves by offering an easy option

for returning goods. For example,

customers ordering clothing or equip-

ment online, are happier knowing

there is an easy return option should

the item not be suitable.

In the last edition of UPS

Forum, we highlighted the new

UPS SMS Tracking service,

which allows you to track your

shipments directly from your

mobile phone. However, some

of the European mobile carriers

block the use of the “*”

character as the first symbol

in a message. So, we have

introduced an alternative to

ensure excellent performance.

As a recap:

To track using SMS:1. Select the message option on your mobile phone2. Select the “write” message option3. Key in your tracking number4. Press “send”5. Enter the local UPS SMS Tracking phone number. This can be obtained

from your local call centre or log onto your country website Tracking page. Please note:■ If you want to be notified once the shipment has been delivered,

simply add “UPS” before the tracking number (do not use the “*” optionany more).

■ If you want to immediately know the status of the shipment, just includethe tracking number in the message area – you will be informed of thecurrent status – either “in transit” or with full delivery details.

If you haven’t tried it out already, give it a go, you’ll be surprised how easy andconvenient the service is.

InBriefUPS offers solution for SAP usersAs you will see from many of the articles

in this edition of UPS Forum, information is

a really key component in streamlining

business processes, saving cost and time

and enhancing customer service.

Our aim is to make the information we

capture on your shipments available, so you

can seamlessly integrate it into your internal

systems.

Realising that many organisations use SAP

as an Enterprise Resource Planning System,

UPS has developed the first certified shipping

interface for SAP – UPS Enterprise Solutions for

SAPTM. A seamless interface between SAPTM and

the UPS OnLineTM Tracking function, users can

access online shipping information directly from

their applications. This means our shipping

software can be seamlessly integrated into

your accounting, ordering and warehousing

systems, eliminating costly manual processes

and providing other departments with automatic,

real-time data to help them plan ahead.

Service ExpansionFrom 5 February 2001, customers can

prioritise between speed and economy with

the introduction of the UPS Expedited

service to and from China, Honduras,

Guatemala and Columbia.

As a compliment to the current

UPS Express service offering, the UPS Expedited

service is ideal for less time-sensitive

shipments – imports or exports. With a day

specific time-in-transit, it is a reassuring

door-to-door alternative to airfreight.

New Rates now in effectYou should have received a recent

communication from us advising you of

a slight increase in our rates and the

introduction of a small surcharge for

residential deliveries, both valid from 5

February 2001.

You can be sure that our prices are still

highly competitive and we are constantly

working to bring you the best value possible.

To this end, we have introduced a new

portfolio of UPS Return Services (see front page)

as well as more enhancements to our technology

services. If you would like more information,

please log on to your country page at

Service details and Tariffs as well as our current

Olympics – almost forgotten, no chance! How did your favourite athletes fair in the Sydney Olympic Games…withthe heat and excitement of Sydney cooled by our winter weather, have wealready forgotten the summer heroes? At UPS, no chance!

We are proud to report that UPSers

around the world watched with a mix-

ture of pride and trepidation, as three

of our fellow employee athletes from

our internal Athlete Training Assist-

ance Program (ATAP), success-

fully made it through to the

Games in Sydney. On this

occasion, national alleg-

iances were cast aside.

UPS employee Monique

Hennagan, from Columbia,

S.C., won her first Olympic

gold when she and U.S.

team mates ran a

season best time of

3:22.62. in the women’s

4x400m relay.

Kathlene Haughton, from UPS

Mississauga, Canada couldn’t compete,

due to injury, in her 400m speciality, hur-

dles, but made it through to the semi

finals of the 4x400m relay, competing

directly against Monique. Our

Paralympic gold medal hope-

ful, Ray Dunmeyer, from

UPS’ technology centre in

Mahwah, NJ, competing

in the judo 81 kilo

category for the visually

impaired, had to accept

defeat after two rounds.

Fantastic achievements

by all, and heroes in

their respective UPS

offices.

Around the world, around the clockDue to the continuing growth experienced in international export volume to and from the US and Asia, UPS has

increased the number of UPS aircraft circumventing the globe weekly to five. The additional flights will allow us to

provide excellent service reliability and reduce transit times, by gaining critical additional lift formerly supplied through

common carriage agreements with other carriers.

Specific to Europe, the most

important change is the enhanced

service between Europe and Asia,

with a daily Boeing 767 freighter flight

to Taipei, stopping in Bombay and

Singapore along the way. At the same

time, the rotation is reversed with aircraft

carrying volume from Asia back to

Europe with an additional stop in

Sharjah (U.A.E.). The aircraft then con-

tinuously repeats the loop, linking with

flights to and from the United States.

One immediate benefit for our cus-

tomers is a 48 hour service from Europe

to all major business centres in Asia*.

Closer to home, larger aircraft are

providing increased capacity within

Europe with Boeing 757 aircraft re-

placing 727’s between our European air

hub in Cologne, Germany and Madrid

and Barcelona respectively. An ad-

ditional 727-100 QF from Cologne to

Leeds, UK, an Airbus A300 between

Dublin, Shannon and Cologne, a dedi-

cated 757 to Israel and a 727 aircraft to

Poland are just some of the additional

enhancements made in the last quarter

2000.

With the 11th largest airline in the

world and a total of over 570 aircraft in

service, you can expect enhancements

to continue – just one of the many

reasons we have been ranked ‘The

World’s Most Admired Company’ in the

mail, package and freight industry for

the third consecutive year, as quoted by

a Fortune magazine survey.

*Check with call centre for your specific time-in-transit details

In Spring 1992 the Maastricht

Treaty had just been signed, the

target date for completion of the

Single European Market was

arriving, the opening up of Eastern

Europe was under way and

German unification had just

become a reality. It was then that

UPS launched its first Europe Busi-

ness Monitor, providing a unique

insight into the issues shaping the

business community.

The panel has answered questions

covering a wide range of issues over

the years and some have remained the

same, allowing the changing mood of

business to be tracked.

Highs and lows Company performance and economic

predictions of the panel can be

compared statistically with what

actually happened over the following

year (see Figure 1) and are a good

indicator of Europe’s economic growth

in each economy.

Overall the fortunes of Europe’s

companies have had noticeable highs

and lows. In Spring 1992, optimism was

rife, though German business leaders

were more cautious, perhaps sensing the

potential economic problems caused by

the high cost of unification. However, six

months later, enthusiasm for the future

took a nose dive in Europe and the reality

turned out to be even worse – economic

growth was strongly negative.

Over the next two years, results

indicated a recovery – endorsed by

economic performance as EU growth

went from 0.4% in 1993 to 2.9% in 1994

and 2.4% in 1995. But in the mid-1990s

countries retrenched so that they could

be permitted to join the prospective

euro-zone and growth slowed.

However, all was not lost as 1999

showed improved corporate optimism

and the economic performance of the

panel’s companies in

2000 justified their

predictions – all

countries except Italy

have grown by 3% or

more. Not surprisingly

a further acceleration

in growth is forecast

in 2001, implying

3.0% GDP growth for

the EU in 2001.

More manpower across Europe The panel has been remarkably good at

predicting the pace of job creation in

Europe as is shown in Figure 2.

Throughout the 1990s all countries

workforce prospects have been negative,

coinciding with a period of high unemploy-

ment in Europe, with EU unemployment

averaging 10%. However things started

to improve in 1999, with only Germany

and the UK remaining negative, and the

Millennium painted a brighter picture with all

European businesses planning to expand

labour forces in 2001.

Changing attitudes to the EUPolitical matters and EU issues have not

gone untouched by the survey. In Spring

1992 a majority did not think that customs

and border controls would really be lifted

in 1993 and there was concern about

whether Italy, Spain and Portugal would

meet the qualifying criteria for member-

ship of the Single Currency.

By the Winter of the same year,

the Danes had rejected the Maastricht

Treaty in a referendum and

the European Exchange Rate

Mechanism was breaking up.

Euro-enthusiasm seemed to be

waning. By 1995 79% felt that

the European Commission ‘either

makes no difference to their busi-

ness or actively hinders them’ a

proportion that rose to 81% the

next year.

By 1997 the tide had turned.

Belief in the start of the Single

Currency by 1999 had become

widespread and the expectation that Italy

and Spain would join had risen sharply.

Majorities in all countries were ‘confident

in the concept of a strong euro’ and

thought ‘it would become strong and

stable against the US dollar’.

In the Millennium survey, for the

third year in a row, a clear majority

still believed that the euro, despite

losing a quarter of its value against the

dollar, would be good for their company.

However, the proportion of Germans

who believed the euro would be good

for them had dropped below 50%. And

half overall believe that the euro will

never replace the Dollar as a reserve

currency compared with 35% two

years earlier.

More underneath the surfaceIn the second part of the review we will

reflect on how companies are coping

with the fast pace of changing

technology and share with you

evidence that, in its Millennium year,

despite our ever-increasing European

involvement, the survey results show

that we all still have our national

allegiances and bias. For those hungry

to see the changing views and

expectations of Europe’s business

leaders, a fully interactive web site

documenting the most recent survey,

and previous survey, results can be

found at www.ebm.ups.com

European business – a review of the pastand a look at the futureThe UPS Europe Business Monitor – tenth edition

About the survey The UPS Europe Business Monitor surveys1,500 business leaders from Europe's top15,000 companies on an annual basis acrossBelgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Nether-lands, Spain and the UK.

Respondents are at director level. Theaverage turnover of businesses interviewed in2000 was US$ 1.64 billion (1.94 billion Euro);average employee size is 3,310. Interviewing isconducted in the respondents' native tongue atthe TNS Harris international telephone unit inLondon, UK.

The UPS Europe Business Monitor wasfounded by UPS in 1992 to provide a fresh viewof business opinion throughout Europe. The results of thesurvey serve to provide UPS and its customerswith an insight into the latest conditions, trendsand obstacles predicted to influencebusinesses in Europe as they interact on theglobal market place.

For almost a decade, UPS has been feeling the pulse of Europe’s top companies with an annual survey, The UPS Europe Business Monitor. The Millennium year saw the completion of the tenth edition. To mark this we invited Douglas McWilliams, CEO, Centre for Economics and Business Research, London, to reflect on some of the past predictions and opinions of our panel, highlight key trends andexplore how attitudes and habits of European business leaders have changed. This is the first of a two-part review, the second of which will appear in the next edition of UPS Forum.

Winning Deliveries

ENG/GEN

While our ATAP athletes were gearing up to compete, other UPS employees were performing Olympian feats, delivering

all imaginable urgent and last minute items to participants at the Games – admittedly, driving around the Olympic

villages on Harley Davidson motorbikes might be considered more of a pleasure than work! Here is just a flavour of

what was moved behind the scenes.

■ 832 pairs of black vinyl marching

shoes (totalling 11,265 Ibs.) were

“Expressed” to the Sydney 2000

Olympic Marching Band, so that all

members would be properly out-

fitted for the Opening Ceremony.

■ New sails bound for the yachting

and sailing teams of South Africa,

Switzerland, U.S., Denmark, France,

Questions& Answers

? Why should I be interested inUPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM?

a If you are not using either of our

existing shipping systems, then you

are probably working too hard when

preparing shipments. Now is a great

time to move over to our free software,

which you can install on your own PC

or in a LAN environment, if there are

multiple shippers in your company.

UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM prepares

all the necessary documentation and

labels for your shipments. If you have

a modem or Internet access, then this

information is communicated directly

into our data systems. Operating in a

LAN environment, shipping information

can be accessed and shared across

your organisation simultaneously – for

example, your customer service depart-

ment immediately has access to all

shipping data, while your accounting

department can allocate costs and your

despatch staff can prepare further ship-

ments, all at once.

? If I currently use UPS OnLineTM EnvoyTM,can I continue?

a UPS OnLineTM EnvoyTM will continue to

work and be supported by our help desk in

2001. However, we encourage all users to

move over to UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM to

experience the significant benefits and

greater options this system provides.

We will be contacting you with the new

version of UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM in

the coming months and providing you

with the software so you can move over

with no disruption. Any data bases built

up in UPS OnLineTM EnvoyTM will transfer

easily over to UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM.

? How do I get a copy of UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM?

a If you currently use UPS OnLineTM EnvoyTM

or UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM, we will be

contacting you during the year. However,

if you are keen to get started with

the benefits UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM

offers, especially if you are interested

in our Return Services, then please

send us your details – name, company,

UPS account details, address, and

phone number via this email address

[email protected] and we will

send you the software immediately.

Preparing shipping documentation can

be one of the more tedious parts

of your business day, but if you

already use UPS OnLineTM EnvoyTM or

UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM, you will

already appreciate the time saving and

numerous benefits that these electronic

shipping systems can bring you.

Not only do they save you time and

energy by preparing the necessary shipping

documentation, these systems enable you

to use your shipping information more

efficiently. What’s more, they also speed the

entry of your shipments into our systems –

either through the direct upload of information

via UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM or due to the

easy scanning of the pre-printed bar codes

produced by UPS OnLineTM EnvoyTM.

This immediate provision of shipment

information speeds the path of your package

in our systems, for example we can start pre-

clearing your export shipments, even before

they have left the country.

And to make sure you can take advan-

tage of the latest enhancement to our IT

systems we have introduced a new, upgra-

ded version of UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM.

This version has all the functionality of the

existing one, with some great enhancements

you don’t want to miss. For example:

■ It is the only channel to the new suite

of UPS Return Services – you need

this latest UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM

version to access the UPS Return

Services (see article on front page).

■ Advance email notification enables

you to pre-alert your customers that their

order is on its way and provide them

with the tracking number and shipment

information. This gives them great peace

of mind and can reduce calls to your

customer service desks.

■ Your day’s shipping costs are provided

to you via your UPS OnLineTM WorldShipTM

connection next business day. This gives

you fast reconciliation of costs and

can speed your internal accounting

processes.

■ Locate shipment information faster and

easier using an enhanced search func-

tion in the shipment history file.
