To honour Walter Verling’s 85th birthdaywhich he celebrated last month, and to coincide with a major exhibition of Walter’s workat the Town Hall, and at 84 North Main Street, Youghal, County Cork, The Lavit Galleryare delighted to exhibit his oeuvrein an intimate Showcase exhibition.

Walter’s connection with the gallery goes back to the very foundation of the Cork Arts Society, having had his first solo show at its galleryat 16 Lavitts Quay, in 1964, and he hascontinued to show with us on a regular basis.

Whilst Walter has painted many still life pieces and some portraiture, he is mainly interested in the colour of landscape, the shape of that landscape, and the meaning of landscape. When I look at his landscapes I cannot butthink of the words of the late John O’Donohue:

‘Landscape ‘has a soul and a presence, ‘and landscape – living ‘in the mode of silence – ‘is always wrapped ‘in seamless prayer.’

Charles Lamb, whom he painted within the 1960s, has been his greatest influence, and his choice of working has faithfullybeing en plain air throughout his painting career. Some of my most enjoyable times have beingin Walter’s company listening to himjust talk about his love of painting.
