Information Literacy & the Imperial experience

2003• Decided we needed an Information Literacy (IL)

programme.• Library staff to teach IL in ‘bite size chunks’

throughout the course. • Blended learning approach would be most

appropriate

aim objectives

The aim was to develop a Online teaching programme which could be used by students either remotely or in the classroom to develop their IL skills, thus enhancing their learning experience and developing their skills as an independent learner.

To provide access to an online environment which is made up of self-contained units that can be used either selectively according to the needs of the users, or as a complete linear programme.

Evaluation

• Focus groups• Learning summaries• Evaluation sheets• Critical analysis sheet• Quizzes – formative & summative

Combination of online & traditional teaching methods

Informality of the PC sessions

Ease of access to WebCT

24/7 & being able to revisit units (students whose first language was not English found this very helpful)

User friendly – navigation straightforward

Consistency of style throughout all units

‘I approached this report in the same way that I would have an A Level or even GCSE project. In retrospect, this was a grave error. My attitude in school was always to put things off to the last minute, then just complete tasks out of bare necessity. This tactic is not appropriate for a university level report.

I was extremely negligent in my methods towards both primary and secondary research, leaving me with a huge task on my hands when the report finally to come together. I hardly did any research towards research methods, and I know that this shows in my final report, which displays very weak methodology’

‘The most important piece of knowledge I have acquired from this academic writing is that I now know, or at least think I know, how to research. I have carried out plenty of research on methodology, and I now know where the important information is in the library for future projects. I have acquired a lot of relevant knowledge about the research procedure, …

This has been my first piece of academic writing. I hope that my reference list and bibliography show how thorough my research was. Basically the Imperial College London Central Library has been my second home. I now know how to research, where the books are for the next time, have acquired a lot of relevant knowledge about the procedure, and there is a lot of information that I had to leave out because of the word limit. Where the library is, how self issue desk works. I have learnt a lot by I have come to a point were I have become saturated and will stop reading science fiction literature for a while.’

Excellent system which can help me with my course work, I feel more confident.
