Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES OF POSITION:

Under general administrative direction, develops, maintains, and provides library

services. Cross-training and working in other departments is a requirement. This position

requires complete confidentiality. Classification is exempt status.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Answers reference questions and gives bibliographic instruction.

2. Provides knowledge of electronic resources.

3. Teaches library related classes.

4. Recommends materials for purchase in assigned areas.

5. Prepares booklists, bibliographies, and pathfinders.

6. Weeds collection and supervises inventories in assigned areas.

7. Participates in fund raising, grant writing, and public relations output.

8. Participates in long range planning.

9. Works on library-wide projects.

10. Maintains and develops a library collection focused on adults.

11. Acts as a liaison with local community groups and organizations to provide an interest in

programs and disseminate information.

12. Provides readers advisory services and makes recommendations in locating age and

content appropriate materials.

13. Analyzes and recommends library policies.

14. Maintains a working knowledge of library trends.

15. Serves as Supervisor-in-Charge on rotating basis.

16. This position requires complete confidentiality.

17. Scheduled at Reference, Circulation, and Children’s service desks as needed.

18. Performs in-depth reference research.

19. Participates in all-staff shelving as needed.

20. Uses own vehicle for travel away from the library building.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

1. Considerable knowledge and understanding of basic library principles, procedures,

technology, goals, and philosophy of service.

supervisor, verbally and in written form.

4. Mathematical Ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction,

multiplication, and division) without the aid of a calculator and advanced calculations

with a calculator.

5. Time Management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.

6. Planning and Organizational Skills: develop required plans to solve problems; take

advantage of opportunities to accomplish goals; establish systematic methods for

accomplishing goals.

7. Equipment: computer literate.

POSITION TITLE: ILS Specialist (union) APPLICATION PERIOD: LOCATION: Service Center Beginning: December 22, 2014 RATE: $45,448-$55,494 Full-time, 40 hrs/wk Closing Date: January 12, 2015

DUTIES: Investigates and recommends ILS technologies utilized by staff providing patron services. Determines and establishes protocols for the set up and modification of the ILS software. Maintains the ILS software through creation of login accounts, database codes, tables and indexes. Creates both standard and unique statistical reports, performing analysis of patron usage, customer needs, material needs and acquisitions. Provides ILS training and guidance to library staff. Creates new training references and materials for end users in support of the ILS. Represents the organization's interest in ILS user groups, participating in meetings and facilitation upgrades or enhancements as needed. Collaborates with the Webmaster to ensure consistency of patron experiences and services throughout the KDL website. Collaborates with the Business Office to integrate ILS debt-collection services. Maintains the completeness and accuracy of the bibliographic and patron databases on the ILS. Coordinates the integration and maintenance of KDL's data in the MelCat library system. Maintains awareness of library trends through regular professional development and networking at the organizational, local and state level.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university. Library of Michigan Professional Certificate. Ability to travel between work locations and related places of businesses as needed. Working knowledge of public library operations, computer hardware and software applications. Ability to work under general supervision with latitude in exercising independent judgment and discretion. Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to plan and coordinate programs and activities, interact with various library staff and patrons. Analytical ability to interpret community interests and needs and identifies opportunities for improvement. Visual acuity and physical skills necessary to retrieve library materials from shelves and storage areas, maintain library materials and operate equipment. Physical ability to push/pull fully loaded book carts and lift/carry materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Hearing ability to answer telephone and patron inquiries. Computer skills necessary to effectively access information on the computer. Ability to operate a variety of library equipment including a computer, fax and copy machine.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: One to two years of professional librarian work experience. One to two years of ILS administrative related experience preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

HOURS AND LOCATION: KDL provides library services to our local communities seven days per week. All positions may require some evening and weekend hours, including Sundays. While this position is currently assigned to the above location, KDL reserves the right to require all employees to be available for assignments at any KDL location.

General Summary Under the direction of the Circulation service area supervisor or designee, performs a variety of library and clerical duties.

Essential Job Functions An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following functions. 1. Works at circulation desk, checking materials in and out, processing financial transactions, and

registering library borrowers using an automated library system. 2. May be assigned to interlibrary loan. 3. Maintains borrower database records. 4. Answers library telephone, assisting borrowers with circulation related needs and directing other calls

appropriately. 5. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to work in an environmentally controlled setting. Walking surfaces are well lit, tiled and/or carpeted. This is low physically demanding position, requiring a limited range of motion. The use of both fine and gross muscles of the body is not essential. Work is performed in the optimal working envelope of neck to navel and within arms reach. The use of a ladder to reach shelving outside of the work envelope is common. The employee is required to reach from approximately floor level to six feet. The side rotation of objects is approximately twenty-four inches (shelving of books). The employee is regularly required to lift objects of ± 5 pounds and occasionally lifts objects of 10 pounds. The employee must be able to manually write and work with a computer keyboard. The ability to use a phone system is essential to this position. Vision or assisted vision is required. Limited hearing is acceptable. Verbal communication is essential.
