Who is Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? (Matt 18:1-14, Mark 9:33-37, Luke 9:46-48)Verse 18:2-4 is not referring to “sinlessness” but humility.

Without doubt, babies are sinless (Rom 9:11) and children are innocent who are not yet able to “believe with all their heart” that Jesus is God’s Son (Acts 8:37), or who are not yet able to understand repentance (Acts 2:37). But because of verse 4, I don’t believe that is the intent of Matt 18:3.

“whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child…” (Matt 18:4)

Who is Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? (Matt 18:1-14, Mark 9:33-37, Luke 9:46-48)One who would be “great” in God’s Kingdom is one who:

Would humble himself as this little child (Matt 18:4) Is last of all, and servant of all (Mark 9:35) Is least among you all (Luke 9:48)

Isn’t Jesus the epitome of this? (Php 2:3-8)

One who is “first” in God’s eyes in one who is last in his own eyes.

“but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” Is 66:2

If Thy Brother Trespass Against Thee(Matt 18:15-20)Sin creates a difference between brethren that does not exist between Christian’s and the world.

“if thy brother shall trespass against thee… let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.” Matt 18:15-17

“But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be… no not to eat.” I Cor 5:9-13

“But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be… no not to eat.” I Cor 5:9-13

Matt 18 speaks of a sin against a brother, while other passages such as I Cor 5 speaks of a sin in general.

If Thy Brother Trespass Against Thee(Matt 18:15-20) – No CompanySin creates a difference between brethren that does not exist between Christian’s and the world.

“if thy brother shall trespass against thee… let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.” Matt 18:15-17

“But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be… no not to eat.” I Cor 5:9-13

Jews and Gentiles understood these concepts.

“Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation…” Acts 10:28

If Thy Brother Trespass Against Thee(Matt 18:15-20)“if thy brother shall trespass against thee, tell it unto the church… let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.” Matt 18:15-17

Remember the concept of preparatory teaching from the sermon on the mount. Jesus’ teaching was not exclusive to OT law, but Jesus also spoke doctrine to which we today must adhere.

Jesus framed kingdom law (tell it unto the church) in a manner to which they could understand and relate (heathen man and a publican).

If Thy Brother Trespass Against Thee(Matt 18:15-20) – Jesus is With Us“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Matt 18:20

Jesus is with even two or three who do his will - anywhere. It could be two brethren ironing out a trespass (v16), two having a Bible study in a break room at work, or a group singing at a home.

But the passage doesn’t say that where two or three are, there is a church.

Also, the context in which verse 20 was stated indicates otherwise. Two or three brethren who come together to iron out a sin(v16) aren’t automatically a church. Because Jesus taught that if that arrangement didn’t work, then tell it to the church (v17).

Two or three brethren might band together as a church, fulfilling passages that describe a church. But two or three brethren who come together do not automatically create a fly by night church that pops in and out of existence (for example while someone is on vacation.)

Until Seventy Times Seven(Matt 18:21-35)

70 times 7 – whatever it takes

21 ¶ Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

70 times 7 - from the heart

28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. 29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Citizens of the Kingdom are this way

Shouldest not thou also have had compassion…

Show Yourself to the World(John 7:2-10)

Jesus’ brethren did not believe

2 Now the Jews’ feast of tabernacles was at hand. 3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest. 4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world. 5 For neither did his brethren believe in him. 6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. 7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil. 8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. 9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee. 10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

The Sermon on the Mount

As Gabriel told Mary, God would give Jesus a Kingdom. In Matt 5-7, Jesus describes the character of citizens of this coming Kingdom. The law of the Kingdom would not be in force until he fulfilled the law.

In some areas, Kingdom citizens would be totally unlike OT citizens.

1) Instead of divorce for uncleanness, kingdom law would allow divorce on the grounds of fornication alone (Matt 5:32)

2) Instead of swearing, even unto the Lord (Matt 5:33), kingdom law would allow “yes” and “no” (Matt 5:37)

3) Instead of hating enemies with perfect hatred (Ps 139:22), hewing them in pieces (I Sam 15:33), and utterly destroying them (I Sam 15:3), kingdom citizens love and do good toward their enemies (Matt 5:44)
