“The Life of David - Part 4”

1 David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there.2 All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he became their leader. About four hundred men were with him. (1 Samuel 22:1-2)

– God had a whole new direction for David’s life.

– We want to look at his cave dwelling experience and watch God at work as He continues to mold and shape the new king of Israel.

(David on his face).• God cannot help those who think they

don’t need Him.• David poured his heart out before God.

1 I cry aloud to the LORD; I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy.

2 I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble. (Psa. 142:1-2)

• He could find no help or comfort from anyone.

3 When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. In the path where I walk men have hidden a snare for me. (Psa. 142:3)

4 Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life. His enemy was greater than he was, but he knew that God could deliver him (Psa. 142:4).

– He was honest enough to cry out for help (David on his knees).• God wants us to ask for His help.• When David realized how much he

needed God’s help, he was not too proud to cry out (cf. Psalm 57:1-3).

– He was honest enough to learn from God (David on his feet).• Pride is a hinderance to learning.• The cave experience was a training
