D elegates from Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE are continuing to register for the first LEEA Lifting & Rigging Conference Middle East, which takes place at the Shangri-La Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, 14-15 December 2015. Following the success of LEEA’s recent conference of the same format in Singapore this June, the prospect of two days of presentations and networking for lifting industry professionals working with cranes, hoists and rigging equipment in the Middle East has been embraced by professionals in the emirates and beyond. Two days of educational, technical presentations will once again be punctuated by refreshments and networking amongst tabletop exhibits showing the wares of lifting and rigging equipment suppliers. A windswept Geoff Holden updates members about onlinelearning, opening the Dubai office, new technical staff and more.

PLAIN SAILING

Quick as a flash andit seems thesummer is gone,

not that we noticed muchof a summer in the UK,but the sun did shineoccasionally so that musthave been it. Things

remained busy and we made progress in anumber of significant areas.

Thanks to the dedicated work of thetraining team the first twocourses are now availableon the new onlinelearning platform.Enrolments for Part 1 andLifting Equipment Generalare now underway.Anyone waiting to enrolcan now do so. The newsystem offers a muchfuller learning experience;the old, dense pages oftext are gone andreplaced with a brighter, more interactive processwhich we are sure willbenefit all students.

After a tortuousapproval processinvolving seemingly neverending amounts ofpaperwork, we now havethe approval for our officein Dubai together with ouroperating licence.Contractors have beenappointed to make thenecessary changes to theoffice layout and we areaiming to have it open bymid-November.

Kevin Crilly will bebased in Dubai and we will be offeringtraining locally on a more regular basisfrom the new facility from the beginning of2016. The ADIPEC exhibition in Abu Dhabialso takes place during November, whereLEEA are exhibiting on Stand 8620C. Allmembers are welcome to visit Kevin andRob Messenger.

The technical team have been busywith many audits of members across theUK plus Germany, Egypt and Turkey. We

have been looking to strengthen thetechnical team and I was delighted towelcome Robert Rorison who joins us fromLockheed Martin and brings a wealth ofexperience to the association.

Training remains busy both through theHuntingdon training centre and manycourses at members’ premises across theUK. Additionally we have delivered coursesin Oman, USA and Cameroon.

Sales of stands at LiftEx have alreadyexceeded those sold inBolton and we have goodearly bookings forvisitors. All signs are thatthis will be a not to bemissed event, so makesure you are there! Wehave added a conferencealongside the exhibitionwith a great line up ofspeakers which addsanother dimension to theshow. All details can befound on the website.

Since the last issue, Itook the opportunity totake some holiday andtogether with mydaughter sailed at theFireball WorldChampionships inPwllheli, North Wales. The weather wasn’t tookind to us with strong togale force windsthroughout the week andtemperatures more likewinter, but we had agood time and werepleased to fly the LEEAflag during the event. Westruggled in the

conditions and didn’t threaten the leaders, but with 106 boats from six differentcountries it was a great experience. Thenext World Championships are in SouthAfrica in December 2016 so I might notneed a woolly hat there!

“AFTER A TORTUOUSPROCESS INVOLVINGSEEMINGLY NEVERENDING AMOUNTS

OF PAPERWORK, WENOW HAVE THE

APPROVAL FOR OUROFFICE IN DUBAI

TOGETHER WITH OUROPERATING LICENCE.”

Providing more rigorous, flexibleand engaging professionaldevelopment, the LEEA Academyencompasses a range of deliverymethods, including a new e learningservice that employs the latest 3Dmodelling and interactive techniques. The comprehensive range of optionsavailable also incorporates instructor ledpractical training, and ‘blendedlearning’, which combines both e -learning and hands on courses.

LEEA Academy e learning can be

accessed round the clock via PC, Mac,laptop or tablet. An extensive library ofhigh quality, computer generated 3Dimages of equipment such as hoistsand load lifting attachments has beencreated, making it easy for students torelate their learning to day- to- dayworking practices.

In addition, fully interactive quizzesand revision assignments are usedthroughout each training course, providing students with immediatefeedback on progress and helping toidentify any gaps in their knowledge.Students work at their own pace, andbenefit from access to a dedicated tutorand technical helpdesk. A new onlinelearning community connects fellowstudents.

The LEEA Academy will replace the

ROD TOWNS LEADS INCEPTION OF MOBILECRANE EXAMINATION DIPLOMA

ROADSHOW TAKES PLACE IN CARDIFF

LEEA has launched its latest Diploma-level training course—Mobile Crane Examination. The Diploma will be held over a total

of seven days (five days theory/practical followed by two days ofpractical assessment and theoretical examination).

Four initial mobile crane courses have taken place at PetroleumDevelopment Oman (PDO) in Muscat, Oman but the first coursesavailable to all members will be held at member company Al Farisin Dubai next month (October) where places are still available.

Andrew Wright, learning and development manager, said:“Feedback has been most encouraging and as members in theMiddle East receive news of the course, further interest has beengenerated. LEEA is acutely aware of the dangers and accidentsassociated with mobile cranes and we wanted to be at theforefront of the drive to raise standards globally, from anexamination perspective.”

The inaugural courses in Oman were fully booked (24delegates in total) within a matter of weeks from release of thedates. The subsequent Dubai training course is gaining interesteddelegates on a weekly basis.

Wright explained that the final build of the course was devisedover an eight-month period. He said: “After having researched themembers’ requirements [training needs analysis] and deciding onthe scope of the course, we were able to produce a syllabus. Thesyllabus contains the key learning points, or objectives, and fromthis we formulated a lesson plan. To a great extent, it is the lessonplan that determines the length of the training course, havingfactored in all of the learning elements involved.”

The Middle East, a hotbed of oil and gas activity, will continueto be the largest market for the course. However, interest isexpected from Southeast Asia and North America in due course.LEEA members participating in the training typically performstatutory examinations of mobile cranes as third party servicecompanies in their regions.

LEEA has welcomed Rod Towns, training officer, to pioneer thisprocess. He brings 30 years of mobile crane experience to theassociation and played a key role in the course’s development.

Wright said: “LEEA members have been asking for the MobileCrane Examination Diploma training course for almost five years. Itwas always a priority for the learning and development team toproduce a world-class training course, meeting the needs of ourmembers on a global scale.”

He added: “Of particular importance to us was the competenceof the training staff that would be assigned to deliver the courseand that any training we provide is in keeping with our core values. It took many years to recruit the competent person for the role andwe have been very fortunate to have Rod join us. He is also ourinternal coach and mentor for the mobile crane training staff.”

The hugely successful ‘Lifting the Load—Out on the Road’Roadshow delivered a lifting equipment exhibition, seminars and

networking to a Cardiff audience on 17 September. The Roadshowtook place from 10am to 3pm and included presentations on topicalsubjects, professional networking, exhibition space for LEEAmembers, a complementary buffet lunch and was free to attendees.

Presentations started at 11am and were delivered by Andrew

Wright, learning and development manager, and Denis Hogan, UKcountry manager and regional manager—west. Wright introduced theLEEA Academy initiative before Hogan tackled a new discussionabout instructions for use and maintenance of lifting equipment.

Hogan discussed the reasons why there is a sudden surge ininterest to improve the contents of such instructions and how LEEAwill help by the publication of the LEEA 062 series of guidance notesto cover that particular subject.

Each presentation included a question and answer session toenable attendees to interact with the presenter and obtain moreinformation on the subject matter. The popular Roadshow conceptwill return for more exhibitions, seminars and networking across theUK next year.
