“The Prophets” Coming March 1! You are invited to join in this study. If we consider that God is the Divine Bridegroom and the Church is his Bride, then the prophets can be seen as “spiritual marriage counselors.” They afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted, call us to return to our covenant relationship with God. They urge us to repentance, warn us to the dangers of sin, and an-nounce the blessings of faithfulness. Their prophetic words speak to us even today, as they draw us closer to our heavenly Bridegroom, and show us how to share him with others. Why Bible Study? “The morning glories Bible study community [here at St. Bridget] has definitely showed me that you receive mutual encouragement and growth when you put your-self in God’s pathway for cultivating spiritual growth.” Judith People who have studied The Prophets say: “I love this study! … Now we know where they were when they said it, why they said it. Thomas Smith [one of the au-thors] was so clear. He illuminated it so well that it was easy to understand.” Celesta “This study really helps you understand that God’s calling all of us to be His messenger of love…” Eileen

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Light of Christ Catholic Collaborative, Today we continue to read from Mark's Gospel, learning more about the ministry of Jesus. Jesus cured Simon's mother-in-law. Jesus also cured many others who were brought to him, healing their illnesses and driving out demons. Today's Gospel completes a picture of Jesus' ministry: preaching, curing the sick, driving out demons, and then moving on to continue this work in another place. Jesus is teaching us what God is like. By reaching out to the sick Jesus is teaching us that God reaches out kindly and graciously to the all the parts of me that are weak, even our personal demons. Those places within me that are frail, that I'm not proud of, that I don't want anyone to know about - those are the places that Jesus wants to care for. Those are the places where Jesus wants to be with me. Those are the places where Jesus especially loves me. We all know that Jesus went around curing the sick. But we can forget why he did it. He did it to teach us that he came to be with us in those parts of our lives where we don't feel so good about ourselves. He came to say, not simply "I love you," but to say, "I love you there... in the part of your life no one else sees. I love you, weaknesses and all." If you get a chance today, or sometime this week, spend some time with the Lord talking about that part of you. Experience his healing, loving, strengthening touch. As His Disciples in Mission, invite a relative, friend, or neighbor to come to Church with you next week and experience the same. Many people don’t feel worthy to come. Invite them anyway. God wants to touch their lives, too. The Cold and Flu Season is upon us. Upon the recommendation of the Joint Parish Council, we will not be offering the cup with the Precious Blood during Communion – until further notice. Please be cautious if you are not feeling well. You may wish to refrain from shaking hands at the Sign of Peace. If you are a Eucharistic Minister and have symptoms, please find a replacement. If you are experiencing symptoms, please know that your obligation to participate in Mass and receive Holy Communion is lifted. Please use your common sense in this regard. Our Second Grade Students at Holy Ghost Parish received their First Penance on Saturday. They experienced the healing power of the Lord. Many of their parents and family members joined them in receiving God’s healing power through forgiveness of sin. Perhaps the Lord is calling you to experience it as well. The Season of Lent is almost upon us. It begins next Wednesday. It is a great time to be reconciled with God. Pope Francis has asked all Episcopal Conferences across the world to have a “Day” or “Prayer and Penance” in recognition of harm done to children. Cardinal Seán has asked all parishes to offer

prayers this weekend. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops created this prayer that I share with you. Please offer this prayer for healing. “God of endless love, ever caring, ever strong, always present, always just: You gave your only Son to save us by his blood on the cross. Gentle Jesus, shepherd of peace, join to your own suffering the pain of all who have been hurt in body, mind, and spirit by those who betrayed the trust placed in them. Hear the cries of our brothers and sisters who have been gravely harmed, and the cries of those who love them. Soothe their restless hearts with hope, steady their shaken spirits with faith. Grant them justice for their cause, enlightened by your truth. Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people’s wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us the courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers and labors. Grant that all harmed by abuse may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.” Lent begins Next Wednesday, February 14. Here are the 2018 Lenten Guidelines. You may want to hang this on your refrigerator! REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. So what is Fasting and Abstinence? FASTING is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. Let us pray for each other. God bless, Father Mahoney
