ANTIQUE SLIDESHOW ON: Artifacts Crafted by Coopers On Thursday July 20 at 1:00 pm

From the settlement of Plymouth Bay Colony until the mid-nineteenth cen-tury, coopering was one of the larger and steadiest trades practiced on the South Shore. Coopers fashioned circular wooden objects to store every-thing from jewelry to fish. Their wares ranged from delicate bandboxes to huge hogshead barrels for whale oil. They also created domestic objects like butter churns, butter paddles, and toys. Our survey will include objects from early Colonial times to the beginning of the twentieth century. The speaker will be antiques writer Bob Jackman. If you have any objects craft-ed by a cooper, bring them to the show, and Bob will be happy to offer comments. While the talk will be organized around a sequence of 70 slides, the atmosphere will be informal with questions and answers throughout the presentation. Expect to learn a bit, share some laughs, and have a good time. Admission is free but please sign up as refresh-ments will be served.

A New Statewide Council Is Estab-lished To Address Aging

This past April Governor Charlie Baker signed an Executive Order establishing the state’s first “Governor’s Council to Address Aging” in Massachusetts. It will be supported by the Executive Office of

Elder Affairs and the MIT AgeLab. The Council will develop a plan to improve public and private efforts to support healthy aging in Massa-chusetts and to achieve the goal of making the Commonwealth the most age-friendly state for people of all ages. The Council will investi-gate what the state can do to celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of older adults, while protecting their right to live in re-spectful, inclusive communities, free of ageism. It will focus on engag-ing older adults as contributors to the social, economic, and as the civic fabric of our communities. It also will promote physical and psy-

chological health and well-being.

Older adults are the largest and fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population and they will make up 23% of the Commonwealth’s population by 2035. “The notion that people are fully retired at the age of 65 is inconsistent with what I see,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “Many of our older adults still have ample time, energy and talent available to start a second or third career, volunteer in their communi-ty, become a mentor or pursue an unfulfilled passion.” It was noted that many older adults work, volunteer, and contribute to their commu-nities through civic engagement in a variety of capacities and continue

to contribute to our state.

This new Council will identify current effective and efficient practic-es, gaps in services and opportunities to support healthy aging The Council’s plan will also include recommendations for improving public awareness of and access to services for older adults and family care-givers. One of the challenges identified is not just to live longer, but also better. Innovations being developed at MIT and throughout the Commonwealth promise to improve life for older adults and their fami-lies. Moreover, these new technologies, services, and related busi-nesses are fast positioning Massachusetts as the global leader in the fast-growing longevity economy. The Council is expected to deliver a preliminary report to the Governor by the end of 2017. (Source Execu-

tive Office of Elder Affairs)

WHAT IS A MOON?

For people with Medicare, MOON has a new meaning: “Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice”. This newly required notice must be given to some patients who have been admitted to a hospital for “observation”. Hospitals are increasingly admitting patients under observation status. You may be surprised to know that even if you are admitted to a hospital room overnight, you might not be an “inpatient”. If you are under observation, you are considered an outpatient even though you may stay in a hospital bed for many days. This changes how your Medicare coverage works. The MOON will explain the reason for observation status and how it affects your Medicare coverage. For example, if you have Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap plan, an inpatient hospital stay of at least three days is needed to get any coverage for skilled nursing facility (SNF) care. If you are under observation, you would not get any follow up SNF coverage paid for, even if it is medically necessary. However, if you are in a Medicare Advantage plan or your doctor is in an Accounta-ble Care Organization, the rules are different and the three-day requirement may be waived. For further assistance about this or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE Counselor, Judy Sansone. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health and drug insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE ap-pointment, call the Senior Center at 781-834-5581. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.

MARSHFIELD FOOD PANTRY is currently at The First Congrega-tional Church Parish Hall every Tuesday & Friday 9:30 am - 12:00 noon and on Wed. evenings from 6:30-8:30 pm. It will be relocating to the Library Plaza in the early summer. Assistance in getting to the Food Pantry may be arranged through the COA or Sowing Seeds. If you have questions, please call 781-837-0359 and leave a message on the answering machine. Your call will be returned as soon as possi-ble. The Food Pantry welcomes donations to support its’ work. Food, health & beauty products, cleaning supplies and pet foods are always welcomed. Your generosity is appreciated.

MASS. MEMORIES ROAD SHOW

On Saturday, October 28 from 9:00 am—4:00 pm

The Town of Marshfield is excited to announce that it will be host-ing the Mass. Memories Road Show at the Ventress Library. The Mass. Memories Road Show at UMass Boston is an event-based public history project that digitizes personal photos and memories shared by the people of Massachusetts. The Road Show travels to different towns each year and helps the community organize and host the event. Members of the community bring three personal photographs to be digitized. Contributors are invited to share “the story behind the photos” on video, have their own “keepsake pho-to” taken, and receive advice from professional archivists and his-torians on dating and caring for their family photos. The contribu-tions will later be made accessible to the community as a historical digital collection! We are so excited to welcome the Road Show to Marshfield and will be looking for volunteers to assist with the day of activities!
