1 The Link To All Clubs Of The Ganaraska Spring (AprilJuly 2017) TheGanaraska News We are preparing for the spring meeting of the Board of Directors of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association (GHTA) and there are all sorts of new initiatives coming forward. For example, for the first time I can recall, a budget for the current year will be presented. A Strategic Plan will also be up for discussion. Why a Strategic Plan? The GHTA has essentially been treading water on a number of outstanding issues and it’s time to move forward with them. The Strategic Plan will include a number of subjects such as: The Mad River Club has struggled lately and trail maintenance is an issue. We need to find a solution. I received a renewal notice from one of the five hiking clubs I belong to. In it, they mentioned that a charitable donation receipt was available for the membership fee. That means three of these five clubs now offer tax receipts. We will be looking at that possibility for the GHTA. The renewal notice also noted that I could renew my membership online. Four of the five clubs now offer that option. We will also be looking at that as a possibility for the GHTA. We will need some help implementing such initiatives. If anyone with some technology skills would like to volunteer to help, please let me know. Another item is a continuation of the governance initiative. A couple of years ago, it was discovered that the GHTA had not been keeping up with a lot of necessary paperwork. For example, in 2000, a name change to Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association Inc. was authorized by the membership but the application to implement that decision was never filed with the Province. I’m pleased to report that late last year, that Province issued Supplementary Letters Patent to implement the change and the official name is now Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association Inc. Another key area is annual filings. As you know, everyone must file an annual tax return with the Canada Revenue Agency. The GHTA is no different. The Canada Revenue Agency publishes information from the GHTA’s annual returns on the internet and they form part of the GHTA’s online profile. If that online profile is not up to date or not correct, potential donors may be discouraged from making donations. I’m pleased to report that we have updated the CRA filings and any potential donors checking out the GHTA can get a true picture of what the GHTA is all about. This is very important as the GHTA relies on charitable donations to balance its budget. Also, if the GHTA does get into making charitable donation receipts available for membership fees, there might be more scrutiny and we would want to make sure we are doing things right. We will also be working hard on a new organizational bylaw for the GHTA. Not-for profit corporations such as the GHTA or the Bruce Trail Conservancy do not have Constitutions. Rather they have Letters Patent and organizational bylaws. If you would like to see an organizational bylaw, take a peek at the fall 2016 Bruce Trail Magazine pages 27 to 29 under the title “Bylaws for AGM Ratification 2016”. Another example can be found on the Ontario Government website at www.ontario.ca/page/rules-not-profit-and-charitable- corporations under the title “Draft default organizational bylaw”. We will be drawing from resources such as these and others and tailoring a bylaw suitable for the GHTA. It is hoped that this project will proceed quickly so the new bylaw might be ratified at the fall 2017 AGM. We must also not lose sight of the fact that 2018 will be the 50 th anniversary of the opening of the Ganaraska Trail. Planning for celebrations is now in progress. Hopefully an extra effort can be made on trail maintenance this year so that the trail is at its best for 2018. Finally, I hope to meet some of you personally over the coming year. I have extended an offer to each of the club presidents to attend a club function this year. Spring (April– July 2017)

TheGanaraska News

We are preparing for the spring meeting of the Board of Directors of the Ganaraska Hiking Trail Association (GHTA) and there are all sorts of new initiatives coming forward. For example, for the first time I can recall, a budget for the current year will be presented. A Strategic Plan will also be up for discussion. Why a Strategic Plan? One in ten people fall victim to

phishing scams

Phishing is a general term for emails sent by criminals and designed to look like they come from a well-known and trusted source, such as a friend, business, financial institutions, etc.

Phishing scams are crude social engineering tools designed to induce panic in the reader. These scams attempt to trick recipients into responding or clicking immediately, by claiming they will lose something (e.g., email, bank account). Such a claim is always indicative of a phishing scam, as responsible companies and organizations will never take these types of actions via email.

One investigation revealed that criminal syndicates often started by generating email lists compromising of up to 10 million names, on the assumption that only a few responses are needed for the fraudsters to succeed. Further lists are then compiled from the details of people who have responded to scams in the past and considered easy targets.

Although your personal information may appear in this newsletter, such as your name, mailing address, telephone number and email address, yet there’s no need to panic. The best way to protect yourself is to arm yourself with knowledge, use common sense and verify the source. Your financial details are precious so if in doubt, double-check who you’re dealing with before giving anything away.

Don’t Fall Victim

Barrie

The fall 2016 Hiking Season was well attended. Our members continued with Thursday hikes and snow-shoeing well into the winter. All of our Thursday hiking or snowshoeing is a joint venture with the Orillia Club. Barrie coordinates the hiking and Orillia coordinates the snowshoeing.

The Minesing Swamp section of our trail between Pinegrove Road and County Road 90 received some badly needed maintenance in the early to late fall. Brush and weeds were cut, blazes were improved and some of the stiles were repaired and moved to better locations. The work will continue in 2017.

The GHTA website Home Page now has a calendar of events for most of the clubs. The Barrie and Wilderness sections' spring hikes are currently up-to-date and the other clubs' latest offerings will be listed there as we receive them. The calendar will be updated with new additions and corrections. Check it out: http://ganaraska-hiking-trail.org/

Barrie (cont’d)

This past fall the Barrie Public Library invited the Barrie club to participate in a “How to in 10 event” on November 19th and 26th, 2016. Barrie members participated in both events and encouraged library patrons to learn something new. We explained Trail Maps, Etiquette, the Blaze System and Use of a Compass, all of that in 10 minutes per group! We have been invited back for Saturday May 6, 2017 and plan to attend.

KAWARTHA

Winter hikes have been interesting; they have been going from sunny days with beautiful snow-covered terrain to freezing rain and slippery conditions – only in Canada, eh! We are planning some new hikes and hopefully some new hike leaders this spring. So, come join us on our hikes.

We experimented with offering hikes last summer and they were successful, so we are planning on doing more this summer on Wednesdays, starting at the east end of the Oak Ridges Hiking Trails and travelling west. If you are interested in hiking with us, just let us know.

If you have old pictures related to the Kawartha section of the club, please scan them and email them to me at [email protected]. We are working on pulling together a history of the 50 years of our trails, so if you have any stories they would be amazing as well.

We are going to work on setting some suggestions for carpooling amounts to make it easier to figure out what to offer the driver who takes you to and from your hikes. We know some folks travel together all the time and we are not addressing that group, but there are others who go with different drivers all the time, so the guide is just that a

suggestion to help offset the cost of going to the hiking sites and back.

Our next Annual General Meeting, will be held on Wednesday, June 28th at 6pm at 1099 Clonsilla Avenue (building B, straight ahead off of the road). This will all be a potluck, so bring a food dish, plus plate, cutlery and cup.

ORILLIA Our club members have enjoyed all the snow Mother Nature has given us.

But now thoughts are turning to spring with hikes planned for Tuesday morning with Paul, Thursday joining Barrie group, scheduled hikes Saturday some long hikes and short hikes. We hope to join other clubs as they pass thru Orillia section of the Ganaraska Trail. Again we will be biking on Thursday with Isabelle. As we enjoy all the 150 years of Canada celebrations, let's hike and be thankful for all our beautiful trails.

ORO-MEDONTE

January saw quite a bit of freezing rain so we had to cancel some planned outings but the ones we were able to participate in were wonderful. Awenda never fails to be a beautiful place to go in any season and winter is no exception. We skied in the morning then stocked the fire in the little cabin so we would be nice and warm while eating our lunch before tackling the trails once again on snowshoes. At Wasaga we had perfect skiing conditions and in the Simcoe County Forest we had good snowshoeing conditions.

Although in the winter months our attendance is a little lower those who do come out have a great time. This year we also had an outing per month where we got together with fellowship and food. The potluck followed with a moonlight ski/snowshoe walk is the highlight of the winter season. There is something magical about walking in the moonlight with snowflakes gently falling down and the only sound you hear are your footsteps crunching in the snow. We are sorry to see winter come to a close but look forward to some great hiking in the spring. Trout Hollow and Oak Ridges trails are just two of the planned hikes we have for this season. An easy one hour walk on Thursday mornings will begin again in April as well as our regular hiking schedule.

Christine Cornu, President

PINE RIDGE

Our resident climatologist and Hike Director, Colin Banfield, has informed me that despite large temperature swings, freeze-thaw cycles and icy stretches on some trails, Pine Ridge hikes have had a typical turnout of approximately

20 hikers this winter. As has been said, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad equipment". Keep those icers handy.

Along with "old reliables" several new and modified hikes are planned for the spring/summer season. These include hikes in the Northumberland Forest, an expanded list of Ambler hikes and joint hikes with the Kawartha Club. All are welcome.

Our annual Spring Hiking Trip will be a return to the Collingwood area May 15th – 18th.

We are also anticipating the dedication of a section of the GT in Port Hope to our founders Jack Goering and Pat Lawson on May 27. We are hoping that many members of the GHTA will be able to join us.

WASAGA BEACH

Rain, Ice, Snow. We have had it all this winter. Overall, we had few cancellations due to the weather. We continue with mostly "local" hikes on Wednesday. Lois has had good turnouts for the leisurely walks.

Our Annual Christmas potluck on December 7th was held after a wonderful, snowy hike. There were a lot of attendees as well as tables loaded with main courses and desserts. We had an interesting variation on carol singing, which we might improve upon next year. Our Choir mistress, Irene was quite awed by the singing.

The annual outdoor BBQ in January was held in Bertram’s backyard. The handcrafted, portable fire pit was hot, hot, hot. This was preceded by a sunny, warm and windless hike on the beach. Bertram whipped up a large pot of chicken noodle soup based on a recipe from his "talking" computer. Thanks Bertram.

We have some new members joining our hikes and we welcome them with our poles wide open.

Our hikes, over the years, have taught me that even if I have slowed down, it hasn't shut me up.

THE “CAMINO”, SPAIN May 1 to 13, 2017

The Camino de Santiago is an iconic trek covering some 800km across the north of Spain. Our journey encompasses the last 160km from O’Cebreiro to Santiago de Compostela,

including many “extras” in order to make it a complete Galician experience. Thousands of pilgrims have walked

before us, and it is time to add your footsteps to this famous trail.

KENYA WALKING SAFARI

Imagine encountering herds of zebras, giraffes and gazelles right on your path! Travel to 3 different parts of the country, take in incredible sunsets over the savannah, visit Masai

herdsmen in their homes and, of course, see lions, elephants & leopards on our game drives. Accommodations include luxury tented camps and one night at The Ark! And did you know that July is the coolest month of the year in

Kenya?

MACHU PICCHU, PERU September 15 to 27, 2017

Explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas by hiking through the famed salt pans of Maras, the ancient ruins of Pisac, and trekking high up into the Urubamba mountain range. Then

that all important day arrives when we hike into Machu Picchu – rounding the corner of the Sun Gate and seeing

Machu Picchu with your own eyes will give you goose bumps!

(Note: This trip does not involve ANY camping – all accommodations are in hotel & lodges.)
