ABSTRACT
Rafiq, Reza Aflicha. 2016. The Listening Ability of the Seventh Grade Students of
SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus Taught by Using Shadowing Technique in
Academic Year 2015/2016. Skripsi, English Education Department,
Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Muria Kudus University.

Key words: Listening Ability, Shadowing Technique.
Listening is an activity which responses knowledge, idea, and feeling in
form of text so that the result can be enjoyed and understood by the listeners. It is
of skill which requires students to give response their ideas in written. Listening
should get more attention because there are many students who get difficulties in
response text from native speaker. The writer found a problem owned by students
of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in Listening ability. The writer then try to apply
a technique, called Shadowing Technique to teach listening. This is needed to use
this technique because the students can practice in recognizing the utterance by
shadowing the utterance listen.
The objective of this research is to find out if there is any significant
difference between of the listening ability of the seventh grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in the academic year 2015/2016 before and after being
taught by using Shadowing Technique.
The design of research is experimental research with one group pre-test
and post-test design. The population is the seventh grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in the academic year 2015/2016. The writer takes VII C
as the sample by using cluster random sampling. The research instrument uses
multiple choices and written test (complete the missing word).
The result of the research shows that the mean of listening ability of the
seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in academic year
2015/2016 before being taught by using Shadowing Technique is 62 and standard
deviation is 8.4. It is categorized as “sufficient”. Therefore, the mean after being
taught by using Shadowing Technique of the seventh grade students of SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus in academic year 2015/2016 is 73.7 and standard
deviation is 7.7, which is categorized as “good”. It shows that the ability of
listening expression of greeting and introduction after being taught by using
Shadowing Technique is better than before using Shadowing Technique.
Based on the result, the writer conclude that Shadowing Technique is
effective technique in teaching listening, because it can make students more active
and enjoyable in teaching and learning process. For the next writer, it is expected
to give more treatments for the students to get more valid data of the research

ABSTRAK
Rafiq, Reza Aflicha. 2016. Kemampuan Mendengar Siswa Kelas Tujuh SMP
Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus pada Tahun Pelajaran 2015/2016 yang diajarkan
dengan Menggunakan Teknik Shadowing. Skripsi, Program Studi
Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan,
Universitas Muria Kudus. Pembimbing : (1) Dr. H. A. Hilal Madjdi, M.Pd.
(2) Mutohhar, S.Pd, M.Pd.
memberikan pretest and posttest pada satu kelompok. Populasinya adalah kelas
VII SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kudus tahun pelajaran 2015/2016. Penulis
