My wife and I decided to celebrate our oldest niece’s upcoming departure for college by inviting all of my siblings’ kids for a two night sleepover. I knew the cousins would jump at the chance to hang out together, sans parents, one last time before heading back to school.

Entertaining, feeding, bathing and supervising eight kids, ranging in age from 3 to 18, was quite an experience. Bonfires, swimming, surfing and late night card games made for exhausting, but good times. The shower routine alone was a ninety minute ordeal. Meals were served buffet-style, with seating at a premium. Laundry never ceased and the amount of food consumed was staggering.

After just 48 hours, the respect I have for my parents grew immensely. How did my mom and dad do it with five children? Heck, I remember growing up with several families that had 8 or more kids. The idea of not just existing, but actually teaching, nurturing and providing for such a large family over the course of 25 to 35 years is mind-boggling.

We enjoyed the calm that set over our house after the cousins were shuffled back to their respective homes. Hours later, though, I found myself missing the laughter of the kids, the banging of the drums, and the frenzy that existed in a house full of energetic kids. I am happy to be a part of a large family and the love we share. Time keeps on ticking, and in a blink of an eye, your little or not-so-little ones, will be off to college and starting families of their own. Enjoy every moment!

Our cover this month features Julie Kilduff, Master Personal Fitness Trainer and owner of SJC Pilates & Spinning. Read about her high-energy workouts at her newly expanded studio. My favorite month of the year has arrived, and I hope September treats you well. Now get those kids back to school!

InTEllIgEnT ExERcISEKilduff, a buff and energetic Master Personal Fitness Trainer and Certified Personal Trainer, teaches the benefits of Pilates and spin. Her studio is equipped with eight Stott Pilates Reformer machines, BOSU balls, a Stott Pilates Split Pedal Chair, a Stott Pilates Arc Barrel Ladder, and eleven Star Trac NXT Spinner Bikes. SJC Pilates also sells Pilates, spinning and other workout attire by lululemon athletica.

“Pilates is a terrific form of exercise that elongates your muscles and tones your body without adding bulk, with an emphasis on core strength. It is great for people of all ages, makes your body feel terrific and makes you look great,” Ju-lie shares. “Many of my clients have back issues and claim they feel better and stronger when they do classes at the studio. We can also work around pretty much any injury... the Reformer is a great piece of equipment used by physical therapists and fitness enthusiasts all over the world.”

In addition, spinning classes are a fun way to burn calories and fat, Julie mentions. SJC Pilates & Spinning offers ½ spin and ½ Pilates mat classes for variety. “I have started calling this class ‘CLIMB & CHISEL,’ ” she adds.

SJC Pilates & Spinning owner and fitness instructor, Julie Kilduff, is revved up for what lies ahead. Having recently shifted gears to expand the size and shape of her already successful Pilates studio, she’s now perfectly positioned to get Orange County fit.

“When I opened my Pilates studio in 2005, my dream was to expand and add a spinning studio next door. Fate brought me to my new location on Memorial Day and I now have 600-square-feet more space. I have added a spinning studio that is state-of-the-art, gorgeous, fun, and everything I was hoping for,” says Julie. The new location, in historic San Juan Capistrano’s Mercado Village Courtyard Shops, is decorated in warm colors and layered with Persian rugs and antiques.

A DESIRE To InSPIREA former professional figure skater as a child, Kilduff says she has always been an athlete and enjoys instructing others.

“Pilates is the best form of exercise I have ever come across. I have taught every form of group exercise over the last 30+ years and this is the best of the best,” she says. “Now that I have spinning classes, too, my students and I are in heaven. “I have always enjoyed helping people achieve their goals; I do have a passion for fitness,” she contin-ues. “If a fitness instructor is not excited about fitness and helping people, how are they going to motivate you to get where you want to be?” she stresses. “People often say to me ‘you really love what you do!’ They are so right!”

A cuT ABovESJC Pilates & Spinning prides itself on being more than just a place to work out. There’s an inviting feeling that emanates throughout the studio. “My students are such a blessing and we have formed life-long friendships,” says Kilduff.

Julie is also dedicated to keeping her studio in top shape. “It’s spotless at all times. When I’m not teaching classes, I’m cleaning. You will not find a cleaner or more beautiful studio anywhere... and I mean that.

Pilates has really helped my back pain. I have a spinal fusion and am amazed at what my body is capable of on those Stott reformers! Julie has an extensive background in physical fitness and has taught me so much. Plus, the classes are great fun & do not seem like exercise. — heather Bunnel, San Juan capistrano

fITnESS AT Any AgEKilduff’s students run the gamut from young adults to seniors. She instructs experienced athletes, fitness enthu-siasts looking for something differ-ent, as well as people who have completed physical therapy and are recovering from injuries. “It gives me such pleasure to meet someone who has never worked-out and to be able to motivate them to exercise and teach them to love ev-ery moment of their workouts. I am a teacher and I take my job seriously,” she says.

The 2009 SC Open, San Clemente’s annual Surf & Skate Championship, will be held Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th. This year marks the ninth annual skate compe-tition, and the second annual surf contest. Last year’s combined event attracted over 1,500 competitors and 3,000 spectators.

The SC Open is a community, non-profit event promoting local boarders while raising funds for San Clemente’s Beaches, Parks and Recreation Foundation. Skateboarding and surfing are entrenched in San Clemente’s culture. The SC Open is unique in that it provides amateur and sponsored athletes throughout Southern California with the chance to compete...on a ramp, a wave or both!

local happenings

For more information on the

SC Open, call (949.(361.8244.

Online registration is available

at www.san-clemente.org.

The skate contest will be held on Saturday, September 19th at Ralphs Skate Park (241 Avenida La Pata). Pre-registration for both the skate and surf contests closes on Wednesday, September 16th. A $35 entree fee, required to compete in each contest, includes a t-shirt and goodie bag for all contestants. All skateboard participants are required to wear proper safety equipment, including helmet, knee and elbow pads. The competition is open to all ages, male and female, amateur and sponsored, with awards provided to the top three finishers in each category. Professional skateboard demonstrations, live music, and a vendor fair will be ongoing throughout the skate event.

On Sunday, September 20th, the SC Open shifts from land to the sea. The Surfing Championships, restricted to short-boarders due to time constraints, will be hosted by the San Clemente High School Surf Team. The surf contest will be held at the pier and begins at 8 a.m. Top SC Open finishers who have competed in both the skate and surf competitions will be eligible for special awards to be placed in perpetuity in the community center.

“One by one, the few remaining sailing ships are disappearing. They drop away and are heard of no more. With them goes much that is worthy and incalculable. It passes like a high

squall sinking beyond the horizon, wind and sea, mot ion and color, romance and inspirat ion, a whole range of human endeavor, all vanishing t o leeward with tall ships in their midst.”

— Master Mariner Lincoln Colcord

Tickets for the festival, SunSeT PArAde SAiLS and CAnnon bATTLe CruiSeS are available online. Pirate Adventure Passes include deck tours on all tall ships, activities aboard the brig Pilgrim and admission & activities inside the ocean education Center. Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for children 3 to 12 years and children 2 and under are admitted free. Parking and shuttle service are complimentary for all guests. The Ocean Institute is proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point Harbor September 11th through the13th. Come and explore the majesty and wonder of the area’s rich maritime history through the smells, sounds and sights of functioning tall ships. Interactive living-history encampments including blacksmiths, scrimshaw artists, and the infamous Port Royal Privateers are sure to entertain and amaze guests of all ages.

The largest annual gathering of tall ships on the West Coast kicks off on Friday evening, September 11th, with a Sunset Parade from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Climb aboard a Tall Ship for the voyage, enjoy the view on the water aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, or simply grab a seat on shore to witness this breathtaking specta-cle. Experience blasting cannons, towering rigging, bustling decks and the mag-nificence of canvases full of wind. Work with the crew hauling up sail or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular demonstration of skill, knowledge and survival! On Saturday, September 12th and Sunday, September 13th, the tall ships kick up the excitement with a Sunset Cannon Battle Cruise from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Events and interactive activities are scheduled in and around the Ocean Institute, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Baby Beach Park will offer many family activities, ranging from gold panning and treasure seeking at the Pioneer booth, to knot tying races and incredible face painting for the kids. A live musical stage at the grass park will feature amazing performances of traditional sea-faring music, chanteys, and nautical folk songs.

Back this year by popular demand, Pirate’s Dinner Adventure from Buena Park, will grace the decks of the Pilgrim. Venture aboard for a swashbuckling experience! Pirate’s Dinner Adventure performance puts you and your family right in the middle of all of the action. Guests are entertained with an aston-ishing display of aerial artistry, swashbuckling swordplay and dynamic duels in a classic, humorous story of good vs. evil.

If you are a land lover, stay close to the docks with deck tours, climbing and sail furling interactive demonstrations, pirate games and a Block & Tackle car-go exhibit. Enjoy the majesty and wonder of the seven participating tall ships as you speak with the men and women who sail them.

Inside the Ocean Institute, explore their work on protecting the local water-sheds through hands-on labs and art activities. Get up-close and personal with some of the ocean’s most amazing sea creatures, including sea stars, jellies, rays and octopus. New this year, your child may participate in ‘Cap’n Jack’s School for Scallywags,’ a friendly pirate class for kids. Watch as your child learns to walk like a pirate, talk like a pirate and sing like a pirate! Another interesting activity, new to the festival this year, is Omar’s exotic birds and wildlife conservation presentation. Story time will also be offered throughout the day in the children’s theater, along with pirate crafts.

local food & drink

If you’ve ever driven by the intersection of El Camino Real and Avenida Palizada in San Clemente, you probably wondered about the crowd of people on the sidewalk. What you witnessed was the “Sonny’s phenomenon.” As a matter of fact, from 11a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, that happy, revolving crowd enjoys the weather and chats along patiently as heavenly scents waft from the kitchen.

But forget nectar and ambrosia – what you want at Sonny’s is the Eggplant Pomodoro. Really. Slices of beautiful, freshly-breaded eggplant are layered with spinach and creamy ricotta cheese and then nestled in a perfectly seasoned marinara sauce.

Another wildly delicious item on the menu is the Ravioli Amour. I’m talking about perfect pillows of ricotta-filled pasta served with artichoke hearts, hunks of Italian sausage and a tomato cream sauce (try this sauce on the gnocchi too!)

If you’re in the mood for something different, go for the Chicken Christina. Chicken breasts wrapped around fresh spinach, mush-rooms and pine nuts laying atop al dente pasta in Marsala cream sauce. I’d pick the La Crema Pinot Noir to swirl around with this dish, or opt for any of Sonny’s house wines (Salmon Creek Vin-tage) for $4.95 by the glass.

Here’s a little insider information (which you won’t find listed on the menu); on Monday nights, a heaping plate of spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread is only $5.99 (add a house salad for $1 more). Of course, any day at Sonny’s is a great day for pizza; their super thin crust lets all your favorite toppings shine through.

For almost 30 years, the sauces have been made from scratch daily and that kind of attention to detail is what sets Sonny’s apart. So whether you dine inside or sit out on the patio, you’ll understand what brings people back week after week.

For Italian food, Sonny’s is the place to be – just ask the folks standing out front.

In this economy, choosing the best advertising exposure for my store is very important to my bottom line. In the past year, the most profitable advertising response I’ve had is from The Local DISH Magazine. It has more than paid for itself this past year and I am looking forward to continuing putting my advertising dollars with The Local Dish.denniS PenMAn, oWner, renAiSSAnCe hoMe FurniShingS

The Local DISH is just that. It is the perfect place to advertise in our growing South Orange County communities! The March 2009 cover and story produced by The Local DISH Magazine brought us much new business. Publisher, Matt, and his staff were professional all the way, and the expert photographers and writer they sent to our office were perfect for my patients and their parents covered in the article. Great reporting, great photography and great job, Local DISH!FrAnk MogAvero ddS MS, boArd-CerTiFied orThodonTiST

We’ve never had so much response from any other print advertising we’ve done in the past. Thanks Local DISH!briAnne MArquArdT, AMAZon TAn
