Back Story: (Officials with the nonprofit that runsHuntington Dog Beach say they are facing bankruptcybecause donations this summer have dropped dramat-

ically and funds are running low.An estimated 2 million dogs visitDog Beach every year. Dog FancyMagazine in 2009 named SurfCity 'Dog Town USA,' in part be-cause of the beach).

Ed Note: Doggie Beach is asmuch a tradition in HB as anyother water-oriented facility wehave. Continuing this intoamenity into perpetuity is critical.

Our thoughts at The Local News...a note to the stewards atDoggie Beach: Preservation Society of Huntington DogBeach and the community at large.

    (1) Ask the City (Joe Carchio) to contact OCBoard of Supervisors since this is a Regionalamenity and perhaps a grant of $5,000 of more ayear is realistic.

    (2) Can the SPCA help(3) I know Ralph's Market has always been a

supporter... can you place a donation bowl at thevarious area Ralph's and ask for their support

    (4) Step up the ASK...at the beach...much morepronounced and aggressive solicitation of $1.00 avisit...small price to pay for Doggie Beach affec-

tionado's and all the people I know who currently go wouldnot hesitate.

    (5) Get your friends and family with Dogs to join the So-ciety... $25 per year is only 50 cents a week.

    (6) Can you get a local Pet Store as a major sponsor...the-ses mega local chain buisnesses certainly know HB is a goldmind for caring pet owners.

I would be more than happy to meet and help set up ameeting with caring, involved people to further brainstormthis issues.

has Smith / US Open of Surfing 2012 saidit better that I ever could: Our planet is a

playground. Huntington Beach, during theU.S. Open, just might be the epicenter. The U.S. Open of Surfing is our religious holi-

day. It is our Christmas. It is our Hanukah and ourHanukah is here once again! Instead of 8 nights of

menorah lighting and communal fried feasts wecelebrate 7 days of surf shred (a little skate shredtoo, for the kiddies) and booze. Instead of dreidelsmade from clay we have temporary tattoos affixedacross nude, tanned flesh. Instead of the recitationof Psalms we have rock n roll. The U.S. Open ofSurfing is the best time of the year. No high holidaycan hold a candle it, try as it might. It is a dream. It is heaven.

And Huntington Beach is the place to be. It is theonly place to experience all the glory and ritual.Huntington Beach is our religious holidays play-ground. What could be better? Nothing! Hunting-ton Beach. Surf City (much to Santa Cruzschagrin).

During the rest of the year the planet is our play-ground and Etnies is hosting a The Planet is yourPlayground contest. Upload a photo, write a cap-tion, win. Win a dreidel made from clay. Or a tem-porary tattoo. Or a trip to Hawaii.

Merry U.S. Open of Surfing one and all! (And a

    happy Casio.)

groups, is 1,500.(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is .0000188

Statistics courtesy of FBISo, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more

dangerous than gun owners.Remember, 'Guns don't kill people, but appar-

ently it could be concluded that some doctorsdo.'

FACT: Not everyone has a gun, BUTAlmost everyone has at least one doctor. This

means you are over 9,000 times more likely to bekilled by a doctor as by a gun owner!!!

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. Wemust ban doctors before this gets completely out ofhand!!!!!

HOLLYWOODPassersby do a quickdoubletake when they first see Dan McCoy.He definitely has That Look, like youveseen him before on the Big Screen or TV. Un-doubtedly you have. People often walk upand ask if hes Academy Award Winner JeffBridges. But he just shrugs it off with a smile.

You see Dan, who has lived almost his en-

tire life in Huntington Beach, is the RealMcCoy. Perhaps you saw famous actor NedBeatty rip a cigar out of Dans mouth in theremake of Splendor in the Grass. He playedan ex-boyfriend of Melissa Gilbert in thatone. Melissa is none to happy when she seesDan at a dance with another woman. Maybeyou saw him as a Bad Cowboy chasing RebaMcEntire in The Gambler Returns-TheLuck of the Draw. He played a Dalton Gangtough.

The cast in Gambler was sensationalnotonly Reba and Kenny Rogers but some of thegrand old westerners from the past likeChuck Conners (The Rifleman), GeneBarry (Bat Masterson), Hugh OBrian(Wyatt Earp), Claude Akins (Gun-smoke), James Drury (The Virginian),Brian Keith (Wagon Train), Dub Taylor

(The Wild Bunch),Linda Evans (TheBig Valley) andJack Kelly (Maver-ick), said McCoy.(Talking with Jack,Dan discovered helived right near theactor and former HBMayor).

But dont ever getMcCoy riled. His specialty, and what gothim in the

business over 25 years ago, is Stunt Fighting.(In fact, he has taught an 8-week course onStunt Fightinghow to get hit, and not hurt, how to throw chairs, you name itat a ChuckNorris Karate School).

My specialty also is falling from 3 story

buildings, getting in brawls, doing car stuntsand knocking someone off, McCoy saidwith a grin. Hes played both sides of thelawa heavy and a police officer. Dan was acadet on Police Academy, a guard and carstunt actor in Dennis Quaid and Eddie Al-berts Dreamscape. He also enjoyed beingin the Dabney Coleman comedy, Hot to

Trot. He played the double for well-knownactor Rick Jason in the movie, Partners. Hewas Karen Carpenters agent in The KarenCarpenter Story. McCoy has been in manyother movies, including George Burns 18Again, Melanie Griffiths Fear City, andMichael Keatons Touch & Go. One of hisfavorites was the Ron Howard, Buddy Ebsenfilm, Fire on the Mountain, where he did anumber of things, including getting in a fightwith a woman.

McCoy said he really bonded with bothHoward and Ebsen. Buddy invited me to hisBalboa house and we enjoyed hanging out to-gether. I really admired what a talented anddown-to-earth man, he wasjust such a classygentleman. Now, Dan hangs out and playsguitar weekly with famed actor Chris Mulkey(First Blood, CSI, Picket Fences.)Dans latest role, playing a goon in theScreen Actors Guild Short Film, Bunglers, just wrapped. And he continues to get callsfor other roles. Not bad for a sweet guy, whogot into acting by competing with hundredsfor only three Stunt Men jobs at Knotts BerryFarm, when he was 17.

Ive always been a daredevil, surfing, skateboarding, you name it and decided to tryout. I got the job and ended up being a Stage-coach Robber and worked in the stunt show.He went on to found the Orange CountyStuntment Association, the Huntington BeachSki Club and is on the Board of Directors ofthe Huntington Beach International SurfingMuseum, where he is doing a Golden BearExhibit that will debut at October 2012. Mostrecently, Dan celebrated his 54th Birthday atPelican Isle in Huntington Beach whereWoodrock played live music and 45 of his

    friends and family came.

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the se-curity of a free State, the right of the people to keepand bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

The second of the first ten amendments to our Con-stitution, the one of the two most commonly debated, discussed and bantered amendments to this day.

I am not here to say that the second amendmentshould be repealed, or that gun ownership is a badthing. I have been in the market for a gun the last few months. I believein the "Castle Doctrine", I believe in self defense, I know that guns haveshown to deter or even stop crimes from happening approximately onemillion times per year. Guns have a place in our society.

I am talking about common sense gun legislation; banning high capac-ity magazines, limiting the ability to buy assault weapons to one per trans-action, closing the "gun show loophole" that allows for the purchase ofguns without a background check and disallowing "non-permit" concealedweapons.

17,000 people are murdered each year in the US. About 70%, or12,000 of those murdered are killed with guns.

Will gun laws stop bad people from being bad? No,of course not. What these gun laws will do is limit thecapacity to kill:

Stockton, CA. Elementary School Shooting: 6dead 30 wounded (1/17/89)

Killeen, TX. Luby's Cafeteria Shooting: 24dead 20 wounded (10/16/91) San Francisco, CA. Petttit & Martin Law Offices: 9 dead 6 wounded (7/1/93)

Long Island, NY. Long Island Railroad: 6 dead19 wounded (12/7/93)

Littleton, CO. Columbine High School: 15 dead23 wounded (4/20/99)

Ft. Worth, TX. Wedgewood Baptist Church: 8 dead(9/15/99)

Honolulu, HI. Xerox Office Building: 7 dead(11/2/99)

Blacksburg, VA. Virginia Tech: 33 dead 17 wounded (4/16/07) Fort Hood, TX. Ft. Hood: 13 dead 34 wounded (11/5/09) Manchester, CT. Connecticut Beer Distributor (8/3/10) Tucson, AZ. Tucson Supermarket Shooting: 6 dead 12wounded (1/8/11)

Aurora, CO. Dark Knight Rises Shooting: 12 dead 59 wounded

(1/20/12)A ban on "High Capacity Magazines" might have reduced the numberdead. If we were mourning even one less loss of life today wouldn't thatbe worth it?

"Background checks wouldn't have stopped these killings from hap-pening." "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." "More people diein car accidents each year than from guns, want to ban cars too?"

I agree. background checks aren't going to put a stop to the insane com-mitting insane acts. Background checks have shown to decrease domesticviolence and crimes of passion, by taking guns out of the hands of thosewith a history of violence.

I agree guns don't kill people... bad people with guns kill people.I also agree that more people are killed in car accidents than from gun

violence each year. There are laws that reduce the number of people killedin traffic accidents; seat belt laws, speeding laws, laws that disallow peo-

ple from riding in the open bed of a pick-up truck. In 2008 the NRA started a campaign against Barack Obama, stating

that he would take away all your guns. Jump into my time machine and

see what was said in 2008: "Obama will ban the use of firearms for home self-defense." "Obama will ban rifle ammunition commonly used for huntingand sport shooting."

"Obama will ban the manufacture, sale and possession of handguns."

"Obama will mandate a government issued license to purchasea firearm."

"Obama will increase federal taxes on guns and ammunition500%."

"Obama will close down 90% of gun shops in America." "Obama will be the most anti-gun President ever."Not a single assertion came true from that 2008 NRA campaign.

Obama expanded gun rights as president by siging a bill allowing con-cealed weapons into National Parks. As a State Senator Obama voted tolimit handguns to one purchase per month. Yet the NRA grades Obamawith an F. The NRA grades Romney with a B+. Mitt Romney, in 2002specifically said he did not align himself with the NRA, signed a lifetime

ban on assault weapons, increased gun license fees, told the moderator ofa debate he owned guns (later to find out he did not), said that he hadbeen hunting, then when asked why there was no hunting license ever is-sued to him, said "I only hunt small vermints".

A recent interview with Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, givesme hope that reasonable compromise can be made on gun control. An-tonin Scalia: "The Second Amendment leaves open the possibly of guncontrol legislation." "The landmark 2008 case of District of Columbia V.Heller stated the extent of gun ownership will have to be decided in futurecases." "Exceptions to gun rights were recognized when the SecondAmendment was written, including a tort that prohibited people from car-rying a really horrible weapon just to scare people like a head ax or some-thing.

God bless you and God bless the United States of America.

Markings of a free society in-

    clude individual choice andautonomy from governments;

with the ability to self govern withinthe boundaries of laws. America is stillsuch a country but our desire for toler-ance is being manipulated to generateintolerance. Social conflict and injus-tices arise when citizens attempt toenact social change to meet their agen-

das at the expense of those with opposing views.Laguna Hills welcomed a new Chick-Fil-A, ( and Hunt-

ington Beach soon will too) conspicuously located acrossthe street from In-N-Out, near the corner ofEl Toro Road and the 5 freeway. This newstore joins 1,615 stores across 39 states. The opening was not without drama. Ahandful of protestors, offended by Presidentand Chief Operating Officer Dan Cathys

personal support of traditional marriage, formed a picket line and attempted to solicitcustomers away from the new store.

Chick-Fil-A is a family owned and familyrun business with biblical values rooted inSouthern Baptist traditions. The stores areclosed on Sundays but aside from that thebusinesses display no outward signs of theirpersonal values. There is absolutely no ev-idence that Chick-Fil-A imposes their val-ues on employees or customers nor are

there any claims of discrimination against them. The Com-pany founders should be growing accustomed to oppositionof their biblical values. Mayor Menino of Boston andMayor Rahm Emanuel of Chicago attempted to block theopening of stores in the cities they govern to protest DanCathys values. Each of the Mayors claimed Cathys valueswere in conflict with the values of their city. Individuals

elected to represent a diverse demographic, theological andideological population unilaterally decided to impose theirvalues upon three million people by stomping on the firstamendment rights of a business owner. Rahm Emanuel ap-pears to have learned from his days in the White Housewhere executive orders are commonplace tools to usurp ourconstitution. Clearly these two Mayors could benefit froma publically funded progressive class on tolerance and di-versity.

Chick-Fil-A is a generous company that has been good tothe communities that support them and to their employees.Chick-Fil-A has awarded over 30 million dollars in collegeand vocational scholarships to their employees. 6.7 milliondollars has been awarded to universities that participate inthe Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl (football). Chick-Fil-A funds11 foster homes and has sponsored over 15 thousand chil-

dren to attend summer camp in 2012. Chick-Fil-A also fi-nancially supports a Christian marriage retreat for couplesin crisis, couples that share their values. This offendedMenino and Emanuel.

The Chick-Fil-A family has been boycotted, discriminatedagainst, received threats of banishment by a government of-ficial from operating a business, and publically slandered. This action was not in response to any discriminatory act ontheir part but solely in response to their individual valuesdiffering from those of their opponents. Again, not theirbusiness values, their personal values.

We need to learn that we can still maintain and promoteour own ideals even if someone disagrees with us! That isthe majesty of freedom and democracy! We can believe inour convictions without forcing someone else to give uptheirs. In the words of Martin Luther King, Injustice any-where is a threat to justice everywhere. Now go eat a

    chicken sandwich!!

There is no shortage of feel good stories surround-ing the London Olympics, but one of the besthas to be Oscar Pistorius.

You may know Pistorius as the South African runnerwho lost hislower legs just

below the kneebefore he was ayear old. The ef-fervescent 25-year old is a

    veritable foun-tain of inspira-tion to anyonewho has heardof him and hisa c c o m p l i s h -ments. He is thefirst double am-

putee to compete inthe Olympics, a feat that has generated a great deal ofcontroversy.

Everyone, it seems, has a kind word for Pistorius andno one questions his dedication to running, which hetook up only eight years ago while rehabbing from aknee injury he suffered playing rugby. He has beenhooked on running ever since. Dubbed the BladeRunner, Pistorius competes in Cheetahs, carbon-

fiber legs specially designed for running (he wears a

different set of legs for every-day use). Pistorius ini-tially competed in the Paralympics, but after experienc-ing success, he hungered for more.

At first he was banned from competing against ablebodied runners, the decision basedon expert testimony that his man-ufactured legs allowed Pistorius toexpend less energy than runnerswith natural legs. He appealed thedecision to the Court of Arbitra-tion for Sport. After additional

testing and testimony from a dif-ferent set of experts includingthe man who manufactured Pisto-rius Cheetah legs the original

ban was overturned. His competitors are decidedly

mixed about competing againstPistorius. Although they are unan-

imous in their praise of him as a per-son and they admire his tenacity and dedication to theirsport, many of them are outspoken in their belief thatPistorius has an unfair competitive advantage that theywill never be able to match. It matters little that nonewould want to.

Should Pistorius be allowed to compete against run-ners with natural limbs or should he be restricted tocompeting in the Paralympics? Are the decision mak-

ers afraid to say no for fear of bad PR and protests from

a vocal minority?A bigger question for Olympic organizers is whether

this is just the beginning of allowing double amputeesto compete in the Olympics. For example, will a boxerwho lost his/her (this is the first Olympics that has al-lowed women to compete in boxing) fists be allowedto compete with titanium appendages?

Whether Pistorius has an advantage over his able-bodied competitors today may be debatable, but twothings are certain. Pistorius will not medal in thisyears Olympics. The competition is just too strong,

having had at least a decade head start on training. Andsecond, advances in technology will give him andother amputees - an advantage in the future. The onlyquestions are when and to what extent.

For now, Pistorius is an inspiration to millions aroundthe globe, able-bodied and disabled alike.

    Dear Earth-Talk: I couldnt

    believe my ears:genetically engineered

mosquitoes? Why on Earth would they be created? And I understand there are plans to release them intothe wild? ~Marissa Abingdon, Sumter, SC

Yes its true, genetically engineered mosquitoes, which were bred in the lab to transmit a gene duringthe reproductive process that kills their offspring, have already been used on an ex-

perimental basis in three coun-triesthe Cayman Islands,Malaysia and Brazilto coun-teract the quickly spreading mos-quito-borne viral infectiondengue fever. The World HealthOrganization (WHO) estimatesthat as many as 100 million cases

of humans infected with denguefeverwhich causes a severeflu-like illness and can in certaininstances be fataloccur annu-ally in more than 100 tropicaland sub-tropical countries.

The British company behindthe project, Oxitec, is focusinginitially on dengue fever, giventhat the particular virus whichcauses it is only carried by onesub-species of mosquito. Thismakes the illness easier to targetthan malaria, for instance, whichis carried by many different types of mosquitoes.

Oxitec first released some of the genetically modi-fied mosquitoes in the Cayman Island in the

Caribbean in 2009, much to the surprise of the inter-national community and environmental advocates,

many of whom are opposed to genetic engineering inany of its forms due to the unknown and unintendedside effects that unleashing transgenic organisms intothe world could cause.

In Brazil, where the largest experiments havebeen carried out to date, the government is backinga new facility designed to breed millions of genet-ically engineered mosquitoes to help keep denguefever at bay.

Dengue fever isnt considered to be a big problemin the U.S. as yet. The U.S. Centers for Disease Con-

trol and Prevention reports that most of the denguefever cases showing up in the continental U.S. areamong those who have travelled to sub-tropical and

tropical areas of the world. Still, WHO reports thatthe incidence of dengue fever in the U.S. has in-

creased some thirty-fold over the last half century.A proposal by Oxitec to test its transgenic mosqui-

toes in the Florida Keys has some locals upset. In April2012, the town of Key West passed an ordinance pro-

hibiting the release of the mosquitoes pending furthertesting on possible implications for the environment. In the meantime, Oxitec has applied to the U.S. Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) for a patent on theirmosquito and permission to release them in the U.S.

Some 80,000 people have signed onto a campaignon the Change.org website calling on the FDA to denyOxitecs application. Mila de Mier, the Key Westmother who launched the campaign, is concernedabout the potential consequences of releasing an ex-

perimental organism on a delicate ecosystem.Oxitecs business goal is to sell genetically modi-

fied mosquitoes in the United States, said de Mier.weve already said we dont want these mosqui-toes in our backyards, but Oxitec isnt listening.More definitive scientific study is needed, she says,

that looks at the potential long-term impacts.

David White, a wine writer, is the founderand editor of Terroirist.com. His columns arehoused at Wines.com, the fastest growing wineportal on the Internet.

    RediscoveringReisling

If you ask a sommelier to name her favorite grape,

theres a good chance shell say Riesling. If youre surprised, then its probably because youassociate Riesling with the sweet, simple Germanwines of yesteryear, like Blue Nun, Liebfraumilch, and Piesporter. These wines were and still are affordable and approachable. And theyll always havefans. But they do a disservice to true Riesling.

Fortunately, that could soon change. New York Citysommelier and restaurateur Paul Grieco is on a mis-sion to make sure that Americans giveRiesling the respect it deserves.

Griecos crusade began in2008, when he announceda plan to focus on Ries-ling all summer long atTerroir Wine Bar in

    New York Citys EastVillage.

In a single-minded at-tempt to get guests to atleast try this noble grape,Grieco offered only Riesling ashis by-the-glass white wine offering. Ashe tells it, the staff was incredulous and the guestssuspect, but with 30 different glass pours we setupon a massive inspirational and educational schemethat was challenging and fun.

His campaign quickly took off.In 2010, 14 wine bars in New York joined together

to create a Riesling Pub Crawl; several well-knownRiesling producers visited the city; and Grieco organ-ized a concert where only Riesling was served. Lastyear, about 200 bars and restaurants across the countrytook part by hosting events, offering specials, andagreeing to spread the gospel of Riesling.

This summer, the Summer of Riesling attracted

nearly 500 participants. (To see if anyone is partici-

pating in your community, head to www.Sum-merOfRiesling.com.)Misconceptions still abound, but consumers are

starting to recognize that Riesling is a serious grape.Over the past several years, Riesling sales havesteadily risen. And sommeliers are finding that con-sumers are extremely receptive to the grape.

Rieslings greatest strength is its versatility.First, theres its geographical diversity.

While its ancestral home is Ger-many, where Riesling has been

grown in the Rhine andMosel Valleys since the

14th century, its alsothe most plantedgrape in the Alsaceregion of France. Thegrape is also experi-

encing a resurgence inthe United States, espe-

cially in New Yorks FingerLakes. And there are sizeable

plantings of Riesling in Austria, NewZealand, and Australia.

Theres also its sweetness. Some Rieslings are syrupy and lusciously sweet

and work as dessert. Others are bone dry, pairingbest with raw fish, subtle cheeses, and other lightdishes. Most fall somewhere in between, and are the

perfect match for spicy Asian cuisine, like Thai andIndian. All are marked by high acidity, which is whyits such an adaptable food wine. And all are ex-tremely fragrant. Its no wonder why so many som-meliers love Riesling.

Dont ever let Rieslings sweetness trick you into

thinking its not a serious wine.

    Sommeliers also

evangelize about Ries-ling because its sogood at capturing ter-roir, or a wines sense ofplace. In part, this isbecause most Rieslingis fermented in stain-

less steel, so it isnt ma-nipulated through oak aging or other winemakingtechniques. The grape is remarkably transparent German researchers have found a link between soiltype and flavor in Riesling. Riesling grapessourced from slate vineyards tend to produce wineswith citrus aromas, while grapes sourced fromlimestone vineyards typically result in more trop-ical fruit aromas.

As Robert Parker, the worlds most famous winecritic, recently explained, If you want to talk aboutterroir, talk about German Rieslings or Alsace Ries-lings, where the wines are naked theres nomakeup.

Even though Riesling sales have been rising, Griecoand other Riesling proselytizers still have their workcut out Riesling accounts for just 5 percent U.S.wine sales. But its not by accident that Riesling haslong been known as the noblest of the noble grapes. So dont be surprised if the next time you dine out, your waiter steers you towards a glass of Riesling.

Five Orange County mayors and Hunting-ton Beach's mayor pro tem signed a letterTuesday pledging their opposition to

proposed toll lanes on the 405 Freeway fromSeal Beach through Costa Mesa.

Orange County Transportation Authority andCaltrans officials are considering three optionsfor expanding the freeway, one of which in-cludes the toll lanes. OCTA board members areexpected to weigh the three options at an Aug.

13 meeting, with a vote scheduled forSept. 24.

Caltrans officials have the final sayon the project.

Fountain Valley Mayor JohnCollins, Los Alamitos Mayor TroyEdgar, Seal Beach Mayor MichaelLevitt, Westminster Mayor MargieRice, Costa Mesa Mayor Eric Beverand Huntington Beach Mayor Pro

Tem Kevin Dwyer signed the letterthey plan to submit to OCTA officials.Adding one non-toll lane in each di-

rection from Euclid Street to the 605Freeway would cost $1.3 billion, which is

how much is left in the renewal of MeasureM funding appropriated for the project, saidOCTA spokesman Joel Zlotnik.

Option two, which the six cities support, would add two non-toll lanes in each directionand cost $1.4 billion, Zlotnik said.

The third option, which includes the toll lane, would go from the 73 Freeway in Costa Mesato the 605 Freeway and would cost $1.7 billion,Zlotnik said. It would also add a single freelane in each direction.

Motorists with three or more people in a ve-hicle would be allowed to use the toll lane forno charge, Zlotnik said.

Measure M money would be used to pay forthe free lanes in each direction, but the remain-der of the cost for the toll lane would be fi-nanced through bond sales that would be paidoff with toll revenue, Zlotnik said.

OCTA officials say the third option wouldmove the highest volume of traffic most effi-ciently, Zlotnik said.

    Top 10 Consumer Complaints

Emily Jane Fox of CNN complains...well not rally but shares with us who is com-plaining about what in America.Emily hits them all and says..."Apartments crawling with bedbugs. Pricey phone

services the customer -- senior citizens -- didn't order. A tombstone never delivered. And, of course, ...buying vehicles off Internet Lists like Craig. The Consumer Fed-

eration of America on Tuesday released its annual chronicle of the top 10 consumercomplaints. The CFA list comes from a survey of 38 consumer agencies about thekinds of complaints they received in 2011.

The consumer groups received nearly 290,000 complaints, and recovered or savedconsumers almost $147 million.

No. 10 Household Goods and Home Solicitations:In a tie for the final spot, consumers complained about misrepresen-

tation in both household goods and home solicitations. eFaulty fur-niture or appliance repairs and failure to deliver were among thecomplaints agencies received

about household goods. In terms of home solicitations, consumers cited telemarketersand mail solicitations that misrepre-sented or failed to deliver services. Alsoof concern were violations of do-not-callrules.

No. 9 Real Estate:Real estate is new to the top 10 list

this year. Complaints involved realestate fraud, retirement and assistedliving facilities and timeshare sales.Consumers said some timesharecompanies used long, high-pressuresales pitches and the lure of prizes toget them to agree to not-so-greatdeals. Wow...what a surprise!

No. 8 Fraud:Consumers complained about a range of scams, including fake

checks, bogus sweepstakes and lotteries and grant offers. The reportcited a scam investigated in Kansas, North Carolina and Minnesotain which a group promised consumers a $25,000 grant from the U.S.government if they purchased pricey books and coaching services. There is no FREE Lunch...sound to good to be true...then it probablyis.

No. 7 Internet Sales and Landlord/Tenant:These two complaints tied for seventh place. Consumers

complained that Internet retailers didn't deliver or misrepre-sented online purchases. When it came to tenant complaints, renters griped about unhealthy or unsafe conditions andlandlords who didn't make repairs. The CFA said that illegaleviction tactics and deposit and rent disputes were also com-mon.

Last year, there was an increase in the number of tenants complain-ing that their apartments were infested with bedbugs, and that landlordsfailed to respond adequately. You have rights in thisare...learn them and use them.

No. 6 Services:The report detailed misrepresentation in a variety of services -- things like providers

who lacked required licenses or who did a lousy job.A New Jersey resident complained that she bought a headstone for her sister's grave

two years before, only to notice that it was never delivered. An investigator in theGloucester County Consumer Protection Office found that the stone company hadnever been paid by the memorial company, despite the fact that the consumer paidthem in full.

No. 5 Utilities:Consumers complained about billing disputes and service problems with phone,

cable, satellite, Internet, electric and gas services. Last year, a company misrepre-sented land line phone services to elderly couples in Massachusetts; the

result: higher fees, larger bills and changes that consumers didn'task for.

No. 4 Retail Sales:Some of the top complaints when it came to retailsales included false advertising, fraud, defective

merchandise, rebate issues, coupons, gift cardsand gift certificates. In the report, the CFA saidthere was a swell of complaints that busi-

nesses had refused to honor promotionalgift certificates, or that their terms weren'tclear. Use the HB Gold Card at partici-pating Merchants and let us know what

    happens.No. 3 Home Improvement/Con-

    struction:Consumers complained that

home improvement and construc-tion companies wouldn't finishjobs they started and performedshoddy work when they did. Oneteacher in Florida paid a contrac-tor $18,000 for an addition to

her home that was never built.Do like I had my daughter do:(1) require a performance bondand, (2) if necessary require a

Completion Bond! No. 2 Credit/Debt:For the third year in a row, com-

plaints about credit card billing andfees, along with mortgage-related

fraud, predatory lending and abusive debtcollection tactics, comes in at number two on

the list.Among the abusive debt tactics the report chronicles was the story

about a disabled woman in New Jersey who was harassed until she paid afee to an ambulance service in full although she had agreed to a monthly pay-

    ment plan for the service.

No. 1 Autos:The report said, for example, that nine customers in Floridawere duped by a seller on Craigslist. Some of the people who

paid never got their vehicles, while others got cars that barelyworked or vehicles without titles. This is an easy fix...Shop one of

the 10 New car Dealers on Beach Blvd. and avoid this problem.
