In an Associated Press story recently..."The BorderPatrol reported that 14 suspected illegal immigrants weretaken into custody after a suspected smuggling boat wasfound on the sand at Huntington Beach.
Border Patrol spokesman reportedly told the OrangeCounty Register that the group aboard the 24-foot pangawas taken to a border station.
In another incident, earlier in the month, an abandoned30-foot panga was found 200 yards off Fernald Point inSanta Barbara Countys Montecito area. A Sheriffsspokesman Drew Sugars told the Santa Barbara
News-Press that life jackets found on the beach suggestthat up to 20 people may have been aboard.
City of Huntington Beach officials report that therehave been at least 8 ponga-related events in HuntingtonBeach jurisdictional waters and shores involving the
possible arrival or attempted arrival of illegal aliens tothe United States through the portals of the 9-mile or sovast Surf City shore area.
There have been eight ponga related incidents in thelast year within the city jurisdiction. These incidents
are allegedly human and drug
smuggling operations.
One of the photosattached shows HBLifeguard vehicles work-
ing with HB Police in transporting bales of drugs that con-tained a street value of nearly 1.5 million dollars. TheHuntington Beach bluff area is the location of choice forthese purported international criminals who pose a seriousthreat to public safety by beaching their vessels illegally andoff loading their human and drug related illegal cargo. Theyare likely desperate and probably armed so their behavior
will likely be unpredictable. Obviously they are coordinat-ing with land resources and scouting areas for drop off/pickup. Clearly, this is a threat to public safety and officers whoare responding to the scene.
It should be pointed out that some preliminary researchindicates Huntington Beach has never had this problem
before local marine safety night patrol operations wereeliminated about 2 years ago. Our understanding is thatcurrently, Marine Safety assets are all off duty at 5 pmthrough the winter season. Apparently, the allegedsmugglers and/or "scouts" are aware of the lack of
beach patrols and operational times. They have even planned their "landings" during the time when beachmaintenance takes their breaks as well. Perhaps, No Habla,
but for sure, habla opportunity.

Ellis Ave. is adjacent to the proposed site of a new, majormixed used project in Huntington Beach on Beach Blvdat Ellis. Concerns are being raised the neighborhood.Imagine.... 200 police calls were made in a year at the EllisAve. apartment complex, far more than any other propertyin Huntington Beach.
Out of a possible 365 days per year, the Beach View Villacomplex at 8102 Ellis Ave. has seen 229 police incidents. These police calls have included a variety of police responses.Police have responded to calls revolving around animal cruelty,
battery, domestic violence and several calls to investigatepossible narcotics activity, among other types of incidents.
This apartment complex is currently home to 106 affordablehousing units. The information surfaced when the EIR in sup-
port of more "affordable" housing was presented to the citycouncil. The profile begs the question: How af -
fordable i s
Affordable Housing in light of the social, public safety and related demand forpublic services resulting from concentratinghigh density developments withoutadequate mandates for communitycompatibly and sustainability.
Perhaps there should be some conditions
applied to ownership of these needed, butobviously long term issue-driven develop-ment projects. Two police calls per year is toomany for any single address. What is anacceptable threshold -totally subjective, however, a rational number should bedeveloped that when reached, triggers (excusethe pun) government actions resulting in some
punitive action against the property owner.Whether that result is substantial financial
penalties to help off-set the cost of supplyingunreal levels of public satiety or conditionalUse Permit issues that become in
jeopardy...something needs to be done to helpavoid these abuses in the future. TLN Opin-

The Cranston West Prayer
Banner is not just an old mural
painted on the wall. Both
the School Creed and School Prayer
should be viewed as cornerstones of the
foundation that makes West the
school that it is today.
After discussions with my
high school classmates
regarding the recent court decision to remove the Prayer Mural
from the wall, I realized my feelings about the mural were
much deeper than just our class gift in 1963.
Many comments and opinions have been expressed onthe internet, TV and newpapers but no one seems to under-
stand why the murals both the Creed and Prayer were an
important gift, for our class and the school.
To understand you need to go back to 1960 when students
graduating from Hugh B. Bain Junior High were
divided into two groups. Students from western
Cranston would start their sophomore year at the new
Cranston High School West, also being used as a
Junior High School at that time, and the rest of the
students would attend Cranston High School East
previously named Cranston High School. For the first
time the city would have two high schools. There was
a lot of controversy and some students were unhappy
about attending a new school. Many of their
parents and siblings had graduated from
Cranston High a school filled
with history, tradition and
legacies. We
started our high
school years in
a new school
where not only
the academic
bui lding
was not
f inished
but the
gym and
auditorium
had not
even
been started! As sopho-
mores, in 1960, we were
the entire high school student body no juniors, no seniors!
Imagine your school fielding sports teams with only
underclassman, hallways without trophy cases, walls void of
academic achievement awards and PE class without a gym!
We were students in a school without a history or a legacy.
The Class of 63 became the leader of tradition at West not by
choice but by circumstance. Not that we knew it then. We were
just enjoying our high school years and could not project out
10 years never mind 48. Did we feel deprived by all that was
missing at our school? I dont think so. In fact, we really didnt
know anything else and enjoyed every milestone as it camealong. Interscholastic games were played, dances were held,
plays put on and SATs taken. Everything we did was a first!
And that made it special. Finally the main part of the school
was finished, the gymnasium built and the auditorium was
almost complete when we graduated.
During our senior year, one of the big questions was: What
should we give our school as a graduation gift? It needed to
be something special, a lasting gift. With the approval of the
school we chose to place the School Creed and School Prayer
on the auditorium walls. Our Prayer Mur al was given not as a
religious statement bu as part of the school society as we knew
it during our high school years.
What a pleasant surprise when I went back to West last
year and found the hallway lined with trophy cases as well as
banners hung around the school showcasing awards and
achievements earned over the years. Wonderful to see! West
now has the history, tradition and legacy that was missing in
1963. The School Creed and School Prayer murals were
part of that legacy. Taking down the mural will remove a
cornerstone; part of the foundation started by the schools first
graduating class so many years ago.
June 2013 will be 50 years since the first class, 1963,
graduated from West. As part of our 50th Reunion celebration
we would like to present the school with a replacement
mural to continue building on the
legacy of Cranston
High School West.

Asegment of the popular90210 TV series that wasshot at Bolsa Chica State
Beach recently, may appear in Marchon KTLA Channel 5, according toofficials. Bolsa Chica State Beachis a great place to shoot because itsa beautiful location and lesscrowded in Winter, said NickBiron, a CBS Location Scout, whoworks finding sites for the showabout 9 months of the year. He saidthey also use beaches in Torranceand Redondo for shooting.
A large set, complete with hugelights, was set up on the beach, including a stage and and other areaswhere a varietyof cameras, onand aboveground, caughtevery move.Surfer actorswere used in
b a c k g r o u n dshots. Nearby
joggers and bicyclists going
down the beach trail cranked theirnecks in an effort to catch a glimpseof the shows stars and take in theexciting Hollywood glamour.
In the Bolsa parking lot weredozens of star trailers, productiontrucks and Hollywood caterers. Thetaping brings much needed moneyto the state, employment to hundredsinvolved in the show and adds a fewhours of glitz to one of our beautiful
beaches, where seagulls, pelicans, least terns and other passersbyusually see just sand and surfersthis time of year. After Bolsa, the show is heading to Inglewoodfor further shooting.
More than 60 people recently came toa Costa Mesa Historical Society meetingto hear legendary Southern CaliforniaArchitect Richard Dodd speak about theMissions along El Camino Real. The
Newport Beach man, who has been anaward-winning architect for more than50 years, showed slides of his mission
photos and told fascinating facts aboutmany of the 22 California Missions. Hesaid the missions were established
between 1769-1823, a one day horse rideapart. The first was in San Diego. TheSpanish initially created the missions tohave Franciscan Fathers save souls, fortrading posts and to protect Californiafrom other countries. But after Mexicodefeated Spain, missions were given
back to the native people, who mostlydidn't want them, Dodd said, so thespectacular church compounds were soldto friends. After the United States tookcontrol of California, the missions werereturned to the church.
Dodd said Mission Santa Pala is theonly one where the bell tower is separatefrom the church. The width of MissionSanta Ynez is based on the size of the
timber in the area. He said San Gabrielis the only one built with fired bricks butmost are made of adobe. Dodd said thecity of San Francisco got its name
because of the mission. He gave the fascinated audience free
mission photos taken over the lastseveral years. There were also triviacontests in which he had the crowdanswer mission questions and winnersgot parts of real adobe bricks. Dodd, whoreceived the California Council of theAmerican Institute of Architects'Excellence in Education Award, is authorof "Architectural Styles OrangeCounty." The Atheist WhoChallenged
Cranston:The Crux of the Story
Iattended Cranston High School West a verylong time ago. Some 48 plus years after thefirst graduating class of this school a young
lady brought suit giant the school for a bannerthat my class donated to the school upon ourgraduation. This letter to the editor sums it allup...why all the fuss?
Letter to the Editor ( BYTimes):
Re: Student Faces Towns Wrath in ProtestAgainst a Prayer about a successful lawsuit brought by Jessica Ahlquist, a 16-year-old
atheist in Cranston, R.I.:There are only six words in the text posted onthe wall of Cranston High School West that arethe cause of the problem. They are SchoolPrayer, Our Heavenly Father and Amen.Take them out. The text can then read, withslight modification:
May we each daydesire to do our best,to grow mentally andmorally as well asphysically, to be kindand helpful to ourclassmates andteachers, to be honestwith ourselves aswell as with others.May we be goodsports and smilewhen we lose aswell as when wewin. May we valuetrue friendship andalways conductourselves so as to bring credit toCranston HighSchool West.
Who could possibly objectto that?

1963 was a different time, we ate dinner as a family, often including a prayer before meals. In 1963 wedrank water from a garden hose, we played in thestreet...we even burned our leaves in front of ourhomes in the summer.
I had the honor of being the President of the firstGraduating Class at CHSW. We had no agenda withour gift...common words were used to express amessage to future classmates, teaches and parentsof Falcons.
Almost 50 years have passed since then, severalwars, numerous tragic events and what we have todayis a more politically correct (perhaps vanilla) set ofhyper-sensitivities directed towards everything we allonce took for granted. Where is Thomas Jeffersonwhen we really need him?
We, the Class of 1963, are about to celebrate our50th Anniversary. The real tragedy in all thisunnecessary grandstanding over legal points
surrounding the separation of Church and State wouldbe if our Class could not continue to point to ourattempt to leave a "message" vs. the few specificwords in question, over the years to come. Our intentwas so wholesome, non-political and all-inclusivethat I we will be allowed to come together andre-dedicate a 2013 version of our thoughts, hopes anddreams so that all who have and will follow can sharewhat we felt as we pioneered a new Schoolexperience With unlimited fiscal resources, the
passion to drive a train and with an army of believersat my side...I would certainly pursue what I thoughtwas the right answer. Keep the Banner!
But unfortunately, for the Cranston School Boarddemands for service out way the resources available.I believe the resources needed to try to change thisnational mood would seriously detract from other
public priorities, even though perhaps it is the rightcourse of action. I applaud your courage and
righteous approach to thisincremental dismantlingof what so many holddear...so many havedied and sufferedfor. I rememberwhen my first classmate died in the Vietnam conflictand the reality of life struck me so hard.
We had just played football together a mere fewyears before.. Our fight needs to be at the ballot
box if core life styles are to prevail. I've come toown and publish a newspaper in Souther Californiaso I live these issues every day...and do not envythe tough debate you have had. Thank you foryour public service. Good luck with the results ofyour decision process.

In 1887 Alexander Tyler, aScottish history professor at theUniversity of Edinburgh, had
this to say about the fall of theAthenian Republic some 2,000years prior:
"A democracy is always temporaryin nature; it simply cannot exist asa permanent form of government.
A democracy will continue toexist up until the time that votersdiscover that they can votethemselves generous gifts from the
public treasury. From that momenton, the majority always votes forthe candidates who promise themost benefits from the publictreasury, with the result that everydemocracy will finally collapseover loose fiscal policy, (which is)always followed by a dictatorship."
"The average age of the world'sgreatest civilizations from the
beginning of history, has beenabout 200 years.
During those 200 years, thesenations always progressed throughthe following sequence:
HFrom bondage to spiritual faith;HFrom spiritual faith to great
courage;HFrom courage to liberty;HFrom liberty to abundance;HFrom abundance to complacency;HFrom complacency to apathy;HFrom apathy to dependence;HFrom dependence back intobondage."
The Obituary follows:
Born 1776, Died 2012
It doesn't hurt to read thisseveral times.
Professor Joseph Olson ofHamline University School ofLaw in St. Paul , Minnesota
points out some interesting factsconcerning the last Presidentialelection:

Populatio of couties wo by:Obama: 127 million McCain: 143million
Murder rate per 100,000residets i couties wo by:Obama: 13.2 McCain: 2.1
Professor Olson adds: "Inaggregate, the map of theterritory McCain won wasmostly the land owned bythe taxpaying citizens ofthe country.

Olson believesthe United Statesis now somewhere

LeadershipSOME WILL APPRECIATE THIS AND SOME WILL NOT. HOWEVER, ALL OF IT IS TRUE.
After two years of Change! ... Here's your change!
Just take this last item: In the last two years we have accumulated national debt at a ratemore than 27 times as fast as during the rest of our entire nation's history. Over 27 times asfast. Metaphorically speaking, if you are driving in the right lane doing 65 MPH and a carrockets past you in the left lane. 27 times faster, it would be doing 7,555 MPH!

Larry Taite started his careerwith the City of HuntingtonBeach in 1977 as part of the
Public Works Survey Section. After
a brief stint in Las Vegas in 1980-81,he returned to the City and hasnever looked back. In 1986 Larrymoved over to the Engineering/Design Section and currently worksas Civil Engineering Assistant.Unfortunately for the City, Larry
plans on retiring this summer after33 years of service. His coworkerswill miss his work ethic, his senseof humor and the stories he has toshare from his many experiences.
Larry is known for his meticulousattention to detail. Once given atask, there is no doubt that he willgive it 100% and you know it willnot only get done, but get doneright. This attention to detail has
proven valuable as evidenced by
the many successful projects withwhich he has been associated, in-cluding the many successful audits
of state and federally funded grants.Larry brings this same bird dog
attitude to his hobbies. In additionto obtaining a black belt in martialarts he is currently a member of the
World Championship USA RifleTeam. Larry set a world record in2005 at 600 yards and was
subsequently named NationalBench Rest Shooters Association(NBRSA) national champion. Mostrecently, in May 2011, Larrytravelled with the team to Ireland
where he competed in the IrelandNational Championship (an individualevent), taking a bronze medal at800 yards and grabbing the gold at
900 yards. While there the teamcompeted in the USA vs. EuropeChallenge Match and theCreedmoor Cup (USA vs. Ireland)taking gold at both events.
Larry was born in West Covina, the 6th of 7 siblings. He moved toHuntington Beach at the age ofthree and has lived here for mostof his life, attending CircleView, Perry and Dwyer Schoolsand Huntington Beach High. Heis the proud father of daughterMystie and son Mark and has 3grandchildren. When it is all saidand done, family is more importantto Larry than anything else in hislife. We wish him the best in a welldeserved retirement.

During WWII, Irena, got permission to workin the Warsaw ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer
specialist. She had an ulterior motive. Irenasmuggled Jewish infants out in the bottom of thetool box she carried. She also carried a burlap
sack in the back of her truck, for larger kids.
Irena kept a dog in the back that shetrained to bark when the Nazisoldiers let her in and out of the
ghetto. The soldiers, of course, wanted nothing to do with the dog and
the barking covered the kids/infants noises.
During her time of doing this, she managedto smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants.
Ultimately, she was caught, however, and the Nazi's broke both of her
legs and arms and beat her severely.
Irena kept a record of the names of all the kids she had smuggledout, in a glass jar that she buried under a tree inher back yard. After the war, she tried tolocate any parents that may have
survived and tried to reunite the family. Most had been gassed. Those kidsshe helped got placed into foster familyhomes or adopted.
In 2007 Irena was up for the NobelPeace Prize. She was not s elected. Al Gorewon, for a slide show on Global Warming.
Later President Barack Obama, won for his work as a communityorganizer for ACORN.
Thank God for all the IrenaSendlers in the world and wehope and pray there will bemore in our future.
I was in my back yard trying to launch a kite.
I threw the kite up in the air, the wind wouldcatch it for a few seconds, then it would comecrashing back down to earth.
I tried this a few more timeswith no success.
All the while, a lady friendis watching from the kitchen
window, mutteringto herself how
men needto be
told how todo everything.
She opens the windowand yelled to me,
'You need a little tail.'
I turned with a confused lookon my face and yelled back,
'Make up your mind.Last night, you told me togo fly a kite'

You will prepare me agourmet meal tonight, bring it tome, and when I am done eating mymeal, you will clear the dishes andserve me a scrumptious dessert.
After dinner, you are going to goupstairs with me and we will makelove the way I want! Afterwards, you are going to draw me a bathso I can relax. You will put onsoothing music, wash my back andtowel me dry and bring me myrobe. You will massage my feetand hands to relieve any last bit oftension so that I can sleep like a
baby. Then tomorrow, guesswho's going to dress me and combmy hair?"
The wife replied, "The funeraldirector would be my first guess, unless I have your arse cremated."

Acouple of months ago, I had theopportunity to donate 24 basketballsto the Huntington Valley Boys and
Girls Club on behalf of the Orange CountyWater District (OCWD). How were these
basketballs used by a water district? Why were they no longer needed? Herein, lays a story of engineering creativity andimagination, as well as a story of waterconservation and monetary frugality.
To capture as much of the Santa Ana Riverwater as possible, the District installed a long, rubber inflatable dam in 1993. The dam is320 feet long and 7 feet high. During floodevents, the dam can be deflated. Whendeflated the dam lies flat on the riverbed. When flows begin to subside, the dam can bere-inflated so that water can be diverted fromthe river channel. The cost to construct thedam, pipes, valves, compressor and otherequipment was $3.2 million. It is estimatedthat the additional storm water captured bythe dam paid for the dam in the first winter ofoperation! There is no question that this damis a key part of the Districts groundwaterrecharge system.
In 2010, District staffnoticed that there were signsthat the dam was wearing out.Because of its importance, theDistrict began making plansfor replacing the dam. Thereplacement rubber dam was
made in the USA andweighed 40,000
pounds.A large cranewas used to liftthe dam off of thedelivery truck ontothe ground. In orderto move the daminto position, 400
basketballs were pur-chased and used like
ball bearings. Oncethe dam was in-stalled, the DistrictsBoard of Directorsdecided to providethe basketballs tolocal charitableorganizations.
With this inflatable rubberdam the OCWD can divert15,000 acre feet of waterannually, water that need not
be purchased from theMetropolitan Water District. The savings can be approxi-mately $12 million annually.
In conclusion, the childrenat the Boys and Girls Clubcan have fun playing basket-
ball, we can be proud of thefact that we are conservingthis priceless resource and themonetary savings can helpkeep our water rates to usersat the lowest possible level.Clearly a win, win, win for allof us...and a series of darngood ideas.

Dear EarthTalk:What caused
Solyndra, a leading American solar panel
maker, to fail last fall and what are the implicationsfor U.S. alternative energy industries?
~Walt Bottone, Englewood, NJ
Solyndra was a California-based maker of thin-filmsolar cells affixed to cylindrical panels thatcould deliver more energy thanconventional flat photovoltaic
panels. The companys novel systemmounted these flexible cells, madeof copper, indium, gallium anddiselenide (so-called CIGS), ontocylindrical tubes where theycould absorb energy from anydirection, including from indirect andreflected light.
Solyndras technology was sopromising that the U.S. government provided $535 million in loanguaranteeswhereby taxpayers footthe payback bill to lenders if a
borrower fails. And fail Solyndra did:In September 2011 the companyceased operations, laid off allemployees, and filed for bankruptcy.
What caused this shooting star of alternative energyto burn out so spectacularly after just six years in
business and such a large investment? Part of whatmade Solyndras technology so promising was its lowcost compared to traditional photovoltaic panels thatrelied on once costlier silicon. When Solyndralaunched, processed silicon was selling at historichighs, which made CIGS a cheaper option, reportsRachel Swaby in Wired Magazine. But silicon
producers overreacted to the price run-up and flooded
the market. The result was that silicon prices dropped90 percent, eliminating CIGS initial price advantage.
Another problem for Solyndra was the falling priceof natural gasthe cleanest of the readily availablefossil fuelsas extractors implemented newtechnologies including horizontal drilling andhydraulic fracturing to get at formerly inaccessibledomestic reserves in shale rock. In 2001 shale gasaccounted for two
percent of U.S. natural gas output, while today that number is closer to 30 percent. Theresult of this increased supply is that the price ofnatural gas has fallen by some 77 percent since 2008,meaning utilities can produce electricity from itmuch cheaper as well. Renewables simply cantcompete, adds Swaby.
The final blow to Solyndra was Chinas creation ofa $30 billion credit line for its nascent solar industry. The result: Chinese firms went from making justsix percent of the worlds solar cells in 2005 tomanufacturing more than half of them today, says
Swaby. U.S. market share is now just seven percent.
Low natural gas prices have also hurt otherrenewables, especially given the slow economy andits stifling effect on innovation. To wit, the rate of newwind-turbine installations in the U.S. has declined bymore than half since 2008. The fossil fuel industryand its allies in Congress clearly see the solar andwind industries as a threat and will try to kill [them],says Representative Edward Markey, a top Democraton the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Regardless of the challenges in furtheringrenewables, the White House remains committed tothe greener path. In his recent State of the Union,President Obama renewed the call for a federalRenewable Energy Standard that would force utilitiesto derive significant percentages of their power fromcleaner, greener sources. This would providemuch-needed regulatory uniformity and a more robustand consistent market for renewable power, wherever
solar panels, wind turbines or other equipment happento be manufactured.
Navigating a wine list can bedaunting: Even wine geeks areintimidated by the leather-bound tomesthat so many restaurants hand out. When the wine list doesn't land on thetable with a thud, patrons are still metwith unrecognizable regions and
producers. Plus, no matter where youdine or how much you know, pricescan be senseless.
Fortunately, deciphering a restaurant'slist doesn't have to be stressful. Here arefive simple tips.
Ask For Help: The era of the snootysommelier is over. Whereas yesteryear'ssommeliers were glorified sales agentswho intimidated their guests by pushingexpensive, predictable wines, today's
sommeliers are wine zealots, eager toshare their passion and palates. So if therestaurant you're visiting employs a wine
professional, ask for advice. Most arekeen to help patrons find the perfectwine, regardless of the price.
Be Brave: If you're at a restaurantwith an impressive wine list, seize the op-
portunity to be adventurous. Your dinnercompanions will be impressed with yourcourage, and you'll learn something new.
If you like Chardonnay, for example, consider Viognier. If you like SauvignonBlanc, try Torrontes or Albarino. If youtypically order California Cabernet, consider ordering Malbec or Sangiovese. And don't be afraid of Merlot. Eventhough it's become cool to bash thegrape, Merlot can be as rich as
Cabernet Sauvignon, and is generallymore approachable.
If everyone at your table has orderedsomething different, opt for anunusual wine that'll pair with virtuallyeverything. For white, think AustrianGruner Veltliner. For red, thinkSicilian Nero d'Avola.
Look For Value: I recently chattedwith Kathy MorganMS one of just186 people world-wide to earn the"master sommelier"designation andshe insisted thatgood deals can be
found virtuallyeverywhere.
"Don't be afraidto order cheaperwines, especially ifthe wine list was puttogether by asommelier or awine professional,"she explained. "Ifthought is put intothe list, all the winesshould be good."
If there isn't asommelier, Morganadvises people to seek out wines fromless popular regions. At steakhouses, forexample, you can often find deals onPinot Noir from France and the United
States, as most patrons order bigger wines. And at everyrestaurant, wines from Spaintypically offer a great value.
Try Some Glasses: Morganis also convinced that skippingthe bottle list can be a wisedecision. "At restaurants withserious wine programs," she explained,
"sommeliers seewines by the glassas an introductionto their programs
they knowthat's where
people are goingto get their first
impression."Ordering by
the glass alsoenables patrons totry a wine beforecommitting to it
it's not frownedupon to ask yourserver for a tasteof something
before ordering afull glass. Plus, ordering by theglass makes iteasier to try a
variety of wines at one meal.Remember That You're In Charge: Is
your wine too warm? Do you feelpressured to spend more than you'd like?
Is your server refillingyour glass too quickly? If the answer to any ofthese questions is "yes,"speak up!
Restaurants are noto-rious for serving redwine too warm redsshould always be served
slightly cool, at about 60-65 degrees. Soif your wine tastes like it's been sitting atroom temperature, ask for an ice bucketor switch to a white wine or beer.
If the sommelier is steering youtowards something too expensive, therewas probably a miscommunication. Sosay something. If you don't want to letyour guests know how much you're
spending, point to the price you'rethinking and ask for something similar. Finally, don't be embarrassed to ask
your server to slow down. I always insiston finishing my glass of wine before it'srefilled. That way, I can track the wine'sevolution and better monitor how muchI've consumed.
While there are countless otherways to navigate a restaurant's wine
program, these five tips should be easyto remember and help elevate yournext dining experience.

Blogger Chris Barnes takes theCoke challenge ge and share someinteresting new thirst quenching, kitchen cleaning new usesfor the 100+ year old
beverage.
"Remember in theMichael J. Fox movie DocHollywood when the oldcountry doctor tells himthat you can pretty muchcure anything with a canof Coca-Cola? He was
partially right. Sincethe first glass was
poured in 1886, peo-ple have enjoyed itas a beverage as
well as findingother unofficialuses as well. The
jingle was right;things really dogo better withCoca-Cola. Hereare some of ourfavorite uses forCoca-Cola.
CompostHelper
A flat bottle ofCoke can come inhandy if you're intocomposting. Simply
pour the soda overthe pile. Coke'sm i l d l y a c i d i cnature will help
b reak dow norganic matter, while its sweetnesshelps attractmicro-organismsthat aid in thecomposting process.
Stomach Relief
Take this with a grain of salt or really, a sip of Coke. There's an
old wive's tale that Coca-Cola can
relieve a stomach ache due tothe soda's carbonation. Hey, it'sworked for me...
Kitchen Cleaner
If your kitchen counters, stove or microwave get alittle greasy after a marathon
cooking session take out thecoke can. Pour a little bit ofthe soda onto a spongeand wipe the counter down.Coke acts like a degreaser.
Just make sure you wipethe counter down a secondtime with water; thisway the counter willnot be sticky.
Insect Distractor
We all know that bugs go crazy forsweet things let'suse that knowledge toour advantage. Ifyou're having a bar-beque, leave a smallcup of coke on theground a few feetaway from your
patio. The scent willget the attention ofall the little crittersand drawing them tothe soda instead ofyour picnic table.
Grout Cleaner
If the tile grout onyour bathroom flooris looking a little...interesting... reachfor a can of Coke. The acid in the sodacombined with the
carbonation packs a 1-2 punch against ground-in
dirt. Simply pour over the tile, letsit for a few minutes, then clean thefloor as usual."

According to recent data, the housing marketmay have finally be reached bottom. For manyhomeowners that have been watching the equityin their home stripped away year after year, thisis welcome news. For prospective buyers whohave been hesitant to get in, this may be the signtheyve been waiting for.
For buyers, the timing couldnt be any better.Depressed values combined with record lowmortgage rates have pushed home affordabilityto an all-time high. Many peo-
ple who never thoughttheyd be able to afford ahome of their own arefinding that they can
buy a home and obtaina mortgage paymentthat is lower than whattheyre currently payingfor rent.
The primary variable thats been keepingprospective buyers on the sidelines is the fearthat values might drop even further after theyve
bought. This may no longer be a cause forconcern. According to a recent reportfrom the Commerce Department, homevalues actually rose in December of2011 compared to the prior year. The difference was small only 0.7% - but itsthe first positive data that weve seen in a longtime regarding home values. Although the yearsfinal figures still showed a drop in values, thatdecline was only 2.4% from the prior year. InCalifornia, values only fell 1.3% in 2011. Thesefigures are substantially less than the 10-20%annual declines weve previously becomeaccustomed to, and a welcome sign that thehousing market may finally be stabilizing.
For those who already own a home, the painof watching their largest investment decrease invalue year after year may finally be reaching anend. Many of these homeowners have beenunable to sell or refinance their existing homesas a result of no longer having sufficient equityto qualify for terms that offer any benefit. This recent data provides welcome optimismthat the equity they want and need may soon
be coming back.
The data provides an additional optimism interms of refinancing programs. Lenders
eliminated many programs and the remainingoptions became much stricter
as property valuesdropped. Lenders will become more likely torelax their lendingcriteria and open therefinancing window to
more homeowners aftervalues turnthe corner.A l t h o u g h
were notthere yet,this recentdata might
be the light at the end of whats been a long andpainful tunnel for many.
On a broader note, this may be the data thatthe country as a whole has been waiting for tofinally stage a recovery in our draggingeconomy. The housing market has been thefoundation of every single economic recoveryfor the last century. It happened after the GreatDepression, it happened in the 1980s, and its
been part of every other recovery i n between. It
needs to happen againin order for oureconomy to recovertoday.
This tenet is wellunderstood by US
policymakers. OnJanuary 4, 2012, theFederal Reservereleased an officialstatement on the state of the US economy. Thevery first line of that statement read:
Restoring the health of the housing marketis a necessary part of a broader strategy foreconomic recovery.
In other words: fix housing first, and the restof the economy will follow.
Warren Buffett says along with equities,single-family homes are a very attractive
investment right now.Appearing live on CNBC's Squawk Box, Buffetttells Becky Quick he'd buy up "millions" ofsingle family homes if it were practical to do so.If held for a long period of time and purchasedat low rates, Buffett says houses are even betterthan stocks. He advises buyers to take out a 30-year mortgage and refinance if rates go down.
