FIRST FRIDAY SHORTSPRESENTED BY MOTHER ROAD BREWING CO.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2 AT 7:30PMGENERAL ADMISSION: $8 | LOFT MEMBERS: $6

$200 MONTHLY PRIZE! | $1,000 YEARLY PRIZE!

On the first Friday of each month comedians Bridgitte Thum and Mike Sterner host our monthly short film contest – just bring us your short films and we’ll play them on the largest movie screen in Southern Arizona! IN CASE YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO A FIRST FRIDAY SHORTS SHOW, HERE ARE THE RULES: We’ll play any short film, music video or short documentary that you’ve made that’s under 15 minutes long and is brought to us on a thumb drive (One film per person, drives need to be in by 8pm. We do not accept commercials or advertisements). Submissions (the first 15 films each month) are only taken on the day of the event. All films are played in the order they’re received. Every film is guaranteed to play for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck, our intrepid host stops the film and the next movie begins. But don’t despair … if your film is gonged, you can re-work it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have pleased the audience. This is a great way for filmmakers to try out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so take advantage. You cannot submit the same film more than once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy! Filmmaker must be in attendance to win the cash prize. We reserve the right not to screen any short film for any reason. PLEASE BE ADVISED: Content ratings are unknown and some material may not be suitable for all audiences.

TEMPORADA DE PATOS(DUCK SEASON)SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 AT 7:30PMGENERAL ADMISSION: $8 | LOFT MEMBERS: $6

PART OF LOFT STAFF SELECTS!A monthly series showcasing film favorites chosen by our amazing Loft Cinema staff! This month’s film was chosen by Peggy Johnson, Executive Director!

Presented by Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón and directed and co-written by acclaimed filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke (Lake Tahoe; Club Sandwich), Temporada de patos tells the hilarious and heartfelt story of Moko (Diego Cataño, Desierto) and Flama (Daniel Miranda), two fourteen-year-olds who have been best friends since they were kids.

“A quiet, loopy gem, Duck Season is a goofball celebration of old friends, new beginnings, adolescent freedom, and baked goods laced with a little something extra.” – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer

They have everything they need to survive yet another boring Sunday: an apartment without parents, videogames, porn magazines, soft drinks and pizza delivery. The electricity company, Rita, the neighbor, Ulises, a pizza deliveryman, eleven seconds, the Real Madrid-Manchester game, some chocolate brownies and a horrible painting of ducks, all combine to break the harmony of what promised to be a placid Sunday, and reveal issues such as the parents’ divorce, loneliness, the confusion between adolescent love and friendship, as well as the frustrations of adulthood. Temporada de patos is a movie that shows that, when the lights go off, we can see the stars. Shot in luminous black and white, this charming gem was the winner of five 2005 Ariel Awards (Mexico’s Academy Award), including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography. (Dir. by Fernando Eimbcke, 2004, Mexico/USA, in Spanish with English subtitles, 90 mins., Rated R)

PART OF OUR CULT CLASSICS SERIES!The greatest cult movies of all-time are back on the big screen!

A coven of teen witches transforms their high school into a little shop of horrors in the magically delicious comedy/thriller The Craft. After transferring to a posh Los Angeles Catholic high school, Sarah (Robin Tunney) finds that her telekinetic gift appeals to a group of three wannabe witches, who happen to be seeking a fourth member for their rituals.

“Schlocky fun … a satirical teen-clique horror movie that’s Carrie meets early John Hughes.” – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

Burn victim Bonnie (Neve Campbell, who also starred that same year in Scream, turning her into the ‘90s go-to Teen Scream Queen), bullied Rochelle (Rachel True) and self-proclaimed “trailer trash” Nancy (Fairuza Balk, in a bat-s**t crazy performance that must be seen to be believed), like Sarah herself, all have troubled backgrounds, which combined with their intense teen angst and nascent powers, lead to dangerous consequences. Using tools stolen from a local magic shop, the newly formed coven summons the power of Manon, a primitive deity, to exact revenge on their tormentors and transform their lives. Drunk with power, the girls (egged on by the increasingly insane Nancy) see their spells spiraling out of control, and the coven soon realizes that with magic, “whatever you give comes back three-fold,” leading to an explosive, witchcraft-powered finale. A fun, so-‘90s-it-hurts high school horror flick combining Clueless, Carrie, The Breakfast Club and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, The Craft is guaranteed to put a spell on you. (Dir. by Andrew Fleming, 1996, USA, 101 mins., Rated R)

SINATRA IN PALM SPRINGSSATURDAY, OCTOBER 5 AT NOONGENERAL ADMISSION: $10 | LOFT MEMBERS: $8PLEASE NOTE: WE CANNOT ACCEPT PASSES FOR THIS SCREENING

This screening is part of Tucson Modernism Week 2019, presented by the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation!

Palm Springs, the small desert oasis 100 miles east of Los Angeles, was Frank Sinatra’s home for fifty years. During his brief yet turbulent marriage to Ava Gardner, Palm Springs was center stage. And for the rest of his life, the Rancho Mirage compound on Frank Sinatra Drive was the sanctuary he called “My Heaven.” Palm Springs still feels the ghost of the legendary performer. In this documentary, director Leo Zahn explores Sinatra’s deep attachment to Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, capturing the spirit of the Sinatra era and paying tribute to his unique lifestyle and the fabulous mid-century modernism of the desert town he loved.

“Sinatra in Palm Springs is a Frank Sinatra fanatic’s dream come true …an entertaining documentary focused on Frank and his relationship with a larger-than-life getaway city.” – AV Nirvana

Featuring swinging and entertaining clips from his movie and television appearances as well as revealing interviews with Barbara Sinatra, Mel Haber, Tom Dreesen, Bruce Fessier, Trini López, Michael Fletcher and many others who knew and lived and played with Mr. Sinatra, Sinatra in Palm Springs brings to life a bygone era and offers fascinating insight into a true icon of entertainment. (Dir. by Leo Zahn, 2018, USA, 92 mins., Not Rated)

Fueled by ego and ignorance, he tries to surmount a lack of experience, funds and likeability by personally connecting with unsuspecting constituents. It does not go well. BACK TO THE FUTUREFRIDAY, OCTOBER 11 AT 8:00PMFREE ADMISSION

FREE OUTDOOR SCREENING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA MALL! PRESENTED BY CATS AFTER DARK

THIS FREE SCREENING IS A GREAT EVENT FOR UA STUDENTS, AND IS ALSO OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN SEATING.

Hop in your Delorean and get back in time with Marty McFly and Doc Brown at a free outdoor screening of Back to the Future, part of Family Weekend 2019 at the University of Arizona!

“To put it bluntly: if you don’t like Back to The Future, it’s difficult to believe that you like films at all.” – Adam Smith, Empire

The ingenious time travel comedy Back to the Future is a pitch-perfect combination of sharp satire, warm sentiment and sci-fi excitement. Michael J. Fox plays 1985 teen Marty McFly, whose mentor, Doc Brown (a brilliantly manic Christopher Lloyd), invents a time-tripping DeLorean that takes the kid back to 1955. When he inadvertently gets in the way of his teenage parents’ relationship (and causes his future mother, played by Lea Thompson, to develop a crush on him!), Marty has to figure out how to give his nerdy father (a gloriously odd Crispin Glover) confidence and get them back together to insure his own eventual existence. Funny, touching and suspenseful, this love letter to American pop culture is one of the most purely entertaining films of the 1980s. (Dir. by Robert Zemeckis, 1985, USA, 116 mins., Rated PG)

PART OF OUR CULT CLASSICS SERIES!The greatest cult movies of all-time are back on the big screen!

“Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.” That pretty much sums up the appeal of this fang-banging ‘80s horror/teen flick mash-up, a vampires-running-amuck-in-Southern California fright flick that dishes up as many laughs as screams … not to mention a pair of teen heartthrobs both named Corey!

“An ‘80s teen vampire flick done right … a sexy blend of bad lads, bloodsuckers, camp comedy and carnage.” – Total Film

When a single mom (Diane Wiest) and her teen sons (Jason Patrick and Corey Haim) move from the Midwest to hip and happening Santa Carla, California, the boys find that they have a hard time fitting in – not because they’re not cool enough (come on, it’s Jason Patrick and Corey Haim!), but because, as it turns out, the “in-crowd” is actually comprised of a gaggle of leather-clad, blood-thirsty teen vampires (led by a sinister, punked-out Kiefer Sutherland) with nothing to do but suck down the red stuff and listen to New Wave classics by INXS and Echo and the Bunnymen. And when Jason P. falls under the spell of a sexy vampira (Jamie Gertz) and is accidentally turned into a vampire himself, it’s up to young Corey Haim and his new nerd pals The Frog Brothers (Jamison Newlander and Corey Feldman) to save him from an eternity of wearing sunglasses at night. (Dir. by Joel Schumacher, 1987, USA, 97 mins., Rated R)

TOMBOYEUROPEAN ARTHOUSE CINEMA DAY 2019!

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 13 AT 2:00PMGENERAL ADMISSION: $10 | LOFT MEMBERS: $8

Celebrate international European Arthouse Cinema Day with a special screening of Céline Sciamma’s acclaimed 2011 drama, Tomboy! European Arthouse Cinema Day takes place at theatres worldwide on October 13, 2019, promoting great European films and the local cinema experience.

In Tomboy, the second feature from celebrated French filmmaker Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), a family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure and 6-year-old Jeanne, moves to a new suburban neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her Jean Seberg haircut and tomboy ways, Laure is immediately mistaken for a boy by the local kids, and decides to pass herself off as “Mikael,” a boy different enough to catch the attention of leader of the pack Lisa, who becomes smitten. At home with her parents and younger sister, she is Laure. Hanging out with her new pals and girlfriend, she is Mikael. Finding resourceful ways to hide her true self, Laure takes advantage of her new identity. But as the end of her idyllic summer approaches, so too does the dilemma of revealing her potentially unsettling secret. Writer/director Sciamma brings a light and charming touch to this contemporary coming-of-age story (buoyed by a disarmingly natural and likeable performance by young actress Zoé Heran as Laure/Mikael), which is also about relationships between children, children and parents, and the even more complicated one between one’s heart and body. (Dir. by Céline Sciamma, 2011, France, in French with English subtitles, 82 mins., Not Rated)

European Arthouse Cinema Day is a project of CICAE (The International Federation of Art Cinemas), a non-profit association promoting cultural diversity in cinemas and festivals. The CICAE was founded in 1955 and represents more than 4,000 screens and 22 international film festivals that have a shared mission of building audiences for excellent independent international film. The Loft Film Fest is the only American festival member of the CICAE.

This screening will take place outdoors on “Hippie Hill” at Himmel Park, 1000 N. Tucson Boulevard. Please bring your own seating.

From mad genius Tim Burton comes Frankenweenie, a heartwarmingly creepy Halloween tale about a boy and his dog … with an undead twist!

“This delightfully twisted story about a boy and his (dead) dog showcases precisely what Tim Burton excels at: blending the macabre and the heartfelt in a perfect, oddball, union.” – Connie Ogle, Miami Herald

After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life-with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous. Burton, the man responsible for such delightfully ghoulish animated favorites as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, here puts his uniquely demented spin on the legendary Frankenstein story and comes up with a hilarious, heartfelt and downright macabre ode to puppy love that is a doggone devilish delight and a Halloween classic for all ages! Based on the bestselling books by R.L. Stine, Goosebumps is a fun fright fest guaranteed to shiver the spine and tickle the funny bone!

“With a lot of jolts and a lot of laughs, Goosebumps is pretty much the perfect scary movie for kids.” – Roger Moore, Movie Nation

Upset about moving from a big city to a small town, teenager Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) finds a silver lining when he meets the beautiful girl, Hannah (Odeya Rush), living right next door. But every silver lining has a cloud, and Zach’s comes when he learns that Hannah has a mysterious dad who is revealed to be R. L. Stine (Jack Black), the author of the bestselling Goosebumps series. It turns out that there is a reason why Stine is so strange… he is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong! PART OF OUR CULT CLASSICS SERIES!The greatest cult movies of all-time are back on the big screen!

“It’s Showtime!” A deliriously off-the-wall, fast-paced horror/comedy, Beetlejuice was Tim Burton’s second feature – and it not only defined his signature mix of wild imagination, sweetly fractured characters, surreal sensibility, gothic whimsy and dazzling special effects, but also firmly established him as one of the most original movie makers of our time.

“Colorful, delightfully deranged and endlessly inventive – a grand-scale funhouse that can be enjoyed by children of all ages.” – Kyle Counts, Hollywood Reporter

Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin play a young married couple who are killed in a car accident but are stuck haunting this world before they can move on to the next. When an obnoxious yuppie couple (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffery Jones), and their unhappy, Goth-obsessed daughter (Winona Ryder, in her breakout movie role) move in to their old home, the ghostly duo tries every trick in the afterlife playbook to frighten them away. But when their fledgling haunting skills prove less than effective, the two turn in desperation to a veteran spook: a profane, malevolent, thoroughly gonzo spirit named Beetlejuice, played to over-the-top perfection by Michael Keaton. And that’s when things really get weird, as Burton’s signature style of macabre comedy goes into maximum overdrive! (Dir. by Tim Burton, 1988, USA, 92 min., Rated PG)

MISSISSIPPI BURNING (35MM PRINT!)

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 19 AT 2:00PMGENERAL ADMISSION: $8 | LOFT MEMBERS: $6

PART OF JOURNALISM ON SCREENJournalism on Screen is an ongoing series combining films that explore the world of journalism with lively discussions with experts and industry professionals. Presented by The New York Times, The Arizona Daily Star, The Daily Wildcat/UA TV-3, The University of Arizona College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, The University of Arizona School of Journalism, Arizona Inn and The Loft Cinema.

See the 1988 Oscar-winning drama, Mississippi Burning, starring Gene Hackman, Willem Dafoe and Frances McDormand, followed by an onstage discussion with the film’s Golden Globe-nominated screenwriter, Chris Gerolmo, moderated by Tucson-based screenwriter Will Conroy.

Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe co-star in this acclaimed drama directed by Alan Parker (Midnight Express), loosely based on the real-life 1964 disappearance of three civil rights workers in Mississippi. Nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Hackman) and Best Director, and winner of an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, this emotionally charged film vividly captures a crucial chapter in American history. In Jessup County, 1964, as three civil rights activists drive down a desolate stretch of highway, headlights ominously draw near. Telling each other to stay calm, they have no way of knowing that in minutes they will disappear into the night and spark one of the most explosive murder investigations in history. Enter straight-laced Ward (Dafoe) and deceptively easy-going Anderson (Hackman), a former small-town Mississippi sheriff himself. Can these two philosophically opposed FBI agents overcome their differences and uncover the chilling mystery of a small Ku Klux Klan-ridden community before it tears itself apart? Also starring Frances McDormand (Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee), R. Lee Ermey, Brad Dourif, and Michael Rooker. (Dir. by Alan Parker, 1988, USA, 128 mins., Rated R)

BLACK SUNDAY (1960)THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24 AT 7:30PMFREE ADMISSION | $5 SUGGESTED DONATION

PART OF OUR ESSENTIAL CINEMA SERIESSee classic art films the way they were meant to be seen - with an audience, on the big screen!

In this darkly atmospheric chiller, a mysterious young woman is executed as a witch, but not before placing a curse upon those who have condemned her – a horrible vengeance that is fulfilled some 200 years later in a riot of pure terror!

In one of the most auspicious directorial debuts in movie history, Italian director Mario Bava bridged the gap between the gothic horror picture and the European art film with Black Sunday (aka La maschera del demonio or The Mask of Satan). Made in 1960 (a banner year for groundbreaking horror films, including Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom), and now considered a cult classic, it continues to reverberate through cinema, inspiring and influencing new generations of filmmakers. In Black Sunday, the bewitching, wild-eyed Barbara Steele (Fellini’s 8 ½; Shivers) plays Princess Asa, a high priestess of Satan who is gruesomely tortured and executed in 1600s Moldavia by having a spiked mask hammered into her face. Before she dies, Asa vows vengeance on the family who killed her and returns from the grave two centuries later to keep her promise by wreaking bloody vengeance. With vampires, bubbling flesh, dank crypts, undead servants and torch-bearing mobs, the film’s plot is pure, high-grade gothic horror, but the visuals are the stylish Mario Bava’s primary concern. Fog, shadows and sinister black and white photography create an overwhelmingly dense and foreboding atmosphere, and the sheer, ghastly beauty of it all is entrancing. Although this was Bava’s first feature-length film in a career that spanned 26 films (including such horror classics as Planet of the Vampires and Blood and Black Lace), Black Sunday is the legendary genre master’s signature work and a milestone in Italian horror cinema. (Dir. by Mario Bava, 1960, Italy, in Italian with English subtitles, 87 mins., Not Rated)

When three 17th century Salem witches – the over-the-top Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler), and her bumbling sisters Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) – are accidentally summoned from beyond the grave by modern-day pranksters, the 300-year-old trio sets out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth by taking the souls of the town’s youngsters, but first they must outwit three clever kids and a talking cat named Thackery Binx! And thus ensues an unforgettable Halloween adventure filled with scary hijinks, zany fun, and even a little singing and dancing … not to mention a whole lot of good, old-fashioned Hocus Pocus! FRIED GREEN TOMATOESSUNDAY, OCTOBER 27 AT 7:30PMGENERAL ADMISSION: $8 | LOFT MEMBERS: $6

PART OF LOFT STAFF SELECTS!A monthly series showcasing film favorites chosen by our amazing Loft Cinema staff! This month’s film was chosen by Shawna DaCosta, Director of Education and Engagement!

Academy Award-winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy star with Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker in this beloved Southern drama based on Fanny Flagg’s best-selling novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

“Brimming with wonderful performances, the movie is remarkable for its collection of rich female leads.” – Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle

Director Jon Avnet’s film moves between two relationships taking place more than a half a century apart. In the modern day story, unhappy Alabama housewife Evelyn Couch (Bates) is surprised when she befriends and bonds with elderly nursing home resident Ninny Threadgoode (Tandy), who fascinates Evelyn with her tales of feisty, tomboy-ish Idgie Threadgoode (Masterson) and her deep friendship with Ruth Jamison (Parker) during the 1920s and 1930s. Through Ninny’s funny, charming, heartbreaking stories of a bygone era, Evelyn learns about two remarkable women whose relationship endured through everything, including running their small-town social hub, The Whistle Stop Cafe, where, in addition to dishing up delectable barbeque and other Southern delights (including those tasty fried green tomatoes!), the Cafe’s employees served up a few major scandals as well. “Klaatu, Barada, Nikto!” Spend the scariest night of the year at The Loft Cinema as we bring out the Dead (and the Bruce Campbell!) for a spine-tingling, rib-tickling twofer of terror, featuring back-to-back screenings of Sam Raimi’s original 1981 gore fest, Evil Dead, in a newly restored and rescored version, and his insane 1992 medieval action/horror/comedy Army of Darkness! Spooky prizes for best costumes, and free Halloween candy for everyone, while supplies last!

EVIL DEAD (1981) 4K digital restoration with new 5.1 surround sound and reimagined music score by original composer Joseph LoDuca! Presented by Grindhouse Releasing.

Sam Raimi’s debut feature, the one that introduced audiences to anvil-jawed hero Bruce Campbell and scared the world out of creepy cabins in the woods forever, is a low-budget rollercoaster ride double stuffed with shocks, gore and bizarre humor – a funky fright flick made by and for true horror fanatics. An unsuspecting group of college pals decide to vacation at a creepy backwoods cabin (big mistake!), but instead of rest and relaxation they find an unspeakable evil lurking in the forest, and one by one, the kids are transformed into undead creatures with a taste for terror. Soon it’s up to our man Ash to survive the night and save the day, but it ain’t gonna be easy …. (Dir. by Sam Raimi, 1981, USA, 85 mins., Not Rated)

ARMY OF DARKNESS (1992)Officially “Part 3” of the wild and wacky Evil Dead series, Raimi’s Army of Darkness is an outrageous, action-fueled comedy with monsters – a film designed to make you laugh more than scream, at least if you have a really demented sense of humor. Bruce Campbell returns as Ash, a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported – along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm – to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his ragtag band of medieval knights against the demonic Deadites, aka The Army of the Dead. (Dir. by Sam Raimi, 1992, USA, 81 mins., Rated R)

PART OF OUR CULT CLASSICS SERIES!The greatest cult movies of all-time are back on the big screen!

A quintessential cult film of the 1980s, Alex Cox’s singular sci-fi comedy features the always captivating Harry Dean Stanton, in one of his greatest roles, as a weathered repo man in a desolate Los Angeles, and Emilio Estevez as the nihilistic, middle-class punk he takes under his wing.

“Great weirdo fun. This is the kind of movie that baffles Hollywood, because it isn’t made from any known formula and doesn’t follow the rules.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

The job becomes more than either of them bargained for when they get involved in repossessing a mysterious – and otherworldly – Chevy Malibu with a cop-evaporating alien force hidden in the trunk, threatening to change the very laws of science as we know it. Featuring a hilarious script, a colorful gallery of amazing character actors (including Sy Richardson and Tracey Walter) and the ultimate early eighties L.A. punk soundtrack (with Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Fear and more), this offbeat comic odyssey is also a politically trenchant take on President Reagan’s domestic and foreign policies. Brilliantly directed by Alex Cox, Repo Man is a one-of-a-kind blue collar punk rock masterpiece. “Let’s go do some crimes …” (Dir. by Alex Cox, 1984, USA, 92 mins., Rated R)

Words from a BearDIRECTED BY Jeffrey Palmer, USA, 2019, 85 mins., Not Rated

When N. Scott Momaday won the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for his novel, House Made of Dawn, it marked one of the first major acknowledgments of Native American literature and the vibrant contemporary culture it described. Now, Momaday’s transportive words come to life in this cinematic biography of one of the most celebrated Native American storytellers. In Words from a Bear, distinctly expressive animations intersect with stunning footage of the Great Plains as Momaday draws from his Kiowa ancestry and identity to pose universal questions about how we connect to our origins, each other, and the earth. In a series of intimate interviews, Momaday expounds on his life and its many challenges, while insights from the likes of Joy Harjo, Robert Redford, and Jeff and Beau Bridges reveal the impact of his literary contributions. Words from a Bear reveals the inspiring beauty of Momaday’s work while also guiding audiences through the grave historical struggles that Native American communities have faced. The result is a profound celebration of not only Momaday’s writing and history but also the art of storytelling itself..

When 2017 Honorary Academy Award-winner Agnès Varda died earlier this year at age 90, the world lost one of its most inspirational cinematic radicals. From her neorealist-tinged 1954 feature debut La Pointe Courte to her New Wave treasures Cléo from 5 to 7 and Le Bonheur to her inquiries into those on society’s outskirts like Vagabond, The Gleaners and I, and the 2017 Oscar nominee Faces Places, she made enduring films that were both forthrightly political and gratifyingly mercurial, and which toggled between fiction and documentary decades before it was more commonplace in art cinema. In what would be her final work, partially constructed of onstage interviews and lectures, interspersed with a wealth of clips and archival footage, Varda guides us through her career, from her movies to her remarkable still photography to the delightful and creative installation work. It’s a fitting farewell to a filmmaker, told in her own words.

In Jamie Catto’s engaging documentary, the core arcs of Ram Dass’ life and teachings coalesce through historic clips and extensive interviews, manifesting the unique existence of Richard Alpert/Ram Dass, the bridge between Eastern and Western philosophies whose spiritual guidance has defined a generation of inner explorers and seekers of truth and wisdom.

“Powerful and moving.” – Bilge Ebiri, Spiritualty & Health

Through his turns as scion of an eminent Jewish family from Boston, rock-star Harvard

psychologist, counter-culture rascally adventurer, Eastern holy man, stroke survivor and compassionate caregiver, Ram Dass has worn many hats on his journey. The film captures a loving man full of joy, wit, honesty, and wisdom, at ease in conversation while sharing his considerable pains and pleasures. The life experiences that have freed him from the attachments of his ‘Somebodyness’ have transformed him into the radiant soul who now inspires a new generation to address the vast question of ultimate freedom. “One of the most fun-filled horror comedies of the year.” – Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish Conjurings

Forced to improvise a new plan when their getaway vehicle runs out of gas, they break into a nearby suburban home looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a seemingly sweet-as-pie couple, George

(Jeffrey Donovan, Burn Notice) and Gloria (Kyra Sedgwick, Closer), whose bland exterior hides dark secrets and sinister intentions, and the bumbling criminals soon find themselves in increasingly hot water (and various forms of bondage) as their overly polite hosts reveal themselves to be clearly insane homeowners who will do anything to keep their twisted secrets from getting out. A darkly comic horror thriller with heaping helpings of grisly thrills and squirm-inducing laughs, Villains turns the home invasion genre on its bruised and battered head. (Dir. by Dan Berk/Robert Olsen, 2019, USA, 88 mins., Rated R)

In late 2014, a low-res video of a person in a clown mask emerging from underneath a sleeping child’s bed appears on YouTube. The description below the video claims that the clown is named “Wrinkles,” that he lives in southwest Florida, and that he’s been hired by the child’s parents to frighten her for misbehaving. The video goes viral. Soon, more mysterious videos of Wrinkles scaring children appear online, along with a phone number to hire him for “behavioral services.” Wrinkles becomes internet lore – a whole genre of YouTube videos of kids filming themselves calling him appears online, and over a million messages are left

at the number. Voicemails range from disturbing to hilarious to terrifying: parents use the number to terrify their children, kids who are obsessive fans of creepy clowns reach out to make a new friend, children threaten to inflict wildly creative violence if he comes anywhere near them. But who is Wrinkles, and why is he doing this? With incredible access to the mastermind behind the mask, Wrinkles the Clown is a cryptic and playful exploration of these questions, as well as an inside look at myth-building and the unpredictable spread of imagination in the Internet age. Monos, Alejandro Landes’ awe-inspiring third feature, is a breathtaking survivalist saga set on a remote mountain in Latin America.

“A monumentally cinematic experience of lush wilderness and raw emotions.” – Tomris Laffly, RogerEbert.com

The film tracks a young group of soldiers and rebels—bearing names like Rambo, Smurf, Bigfoot, Wolf and Boom-Boom—who keep watch over an American hostage, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson, I, Tonya), and a conscripted milk cow. The teenage commandos perform

military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night, an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force known only as The Organization. After an ambush drives the squadron into the jungle, both the mission and the intricate bonds between the group begin to disintegrate. Order descends into chaos and the strong begin to prey on the weak in this vivid, cautionary fever-dream. In his alluring debut feature, writer/director Lucio Castro offers both a sun-soaked European travelogue and an epic, decades-spanning romance. When Ocho (Juan Barberini), a 30-something Argentine poet on vacation in Barcelona, spots Javi (Ramón Pujol), a Spaniard from Berlin, from the balcony of his Airbnb, the attraction is subtle but persistent. After a missed connection on the beach, a third chance encounter escalates to a seemingly random hookup. But are these two merely beautiful strangers in a foreign city or are they part of each other’s histories—and maybe even their destinies? Castro deliberately unfolds mystery after mystery,

leading the audience on a journey of discovery as the two leading men discover themselves and each other. With sumptuous lensing of a Barcelona summertime and tangible chemistry between the actors, End of the Century is a love story that echoes across time. Winner of Best Film at the Buenos Aires Film Festival and Best First Film at the Frameline: San Francisco LGBTQ Film Festival. One of the most controversial and influential American figures of the 20th Century, Roy Cohn was a ruthless and unscrupulous lawyer and political power broker whose 28-year career ranged from acting as chief counsel to Senator Joseph McCarthy’s Communist-hunting subcommittee to molding the career of a young Queens real estate developer named Donald Trump.

Cohn formulated his playbook in the ‘50s, but it is all too familiar today: always attack; never admit blame or apologize; use favors and fear to ensure support for your objectives; expertly manipulate the media to gain advantage

and destroy your opponents; lie shamelessly, invalidating the idea of truth; weaponize lawsuits; evade taxes and bills; and, most importantly, inflame the prejudices of the crowd by scapegoating defenseless people. For those who remember Cohn and those who were too young to have any awareness of him, Matt Tyrnauer’s Where’s My Roy Cohn? lays out who Cohn was and how his lessons to his apprentice Donald Trump have shaped contemporary American politics. From the director of Valentino: The Last Emperor and Studio 54. (Dir. by Matt Tyrnauer, 2019, USA, 97 mins., Rated PG-13)

Celebrated auteur Takashi Miike (Blade of the Immortal, 13 Assassins, Ichi the Killer, Audition) returns with one of his most fun, action-packed films, marked by high-energy mayhem and breakneck pacing. First Love is a noir-tinged yakuza thriller blending genres as it tells the story of Leo (Masataka Kubota), a promising but aimless young boxer, who discovers something to fight for when he encounters Yuri (Sakurako Konishi), a beautiful young woman on the run, and on impulse rescues her. Yuri, literally haunted by the ghost of her no-good father, has been forced into prostitution for a local gang boss to pay off her father’s debts. The

duo falls passionately in love while getting innocently caught up in a drug-smuggling scheme over the course of one night in Tokyo. Baby-faced gangster Kase (Shota Sometani) has decided to double-cross his boss and hijack a big drug shipment with the connivance of a corrupt cop. But after killing the courier they lose the drugs, and multiple parties all chase after it, including Julie (Becky), the ferociously bloodthirsty girlfriend of the slain courier, bent on vengeance. In celebrated writer/director Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, Antonio Banderas plays Salvador Mallo, a film director in physical decline who reflects on his past as his present comes crashing down around him. Some of these reflections are in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the ‘60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity; his first adult love in the Madrid of the ‘80s; the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense; writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable; the early discovery of cinema; and the void, the infinite void created by the incapacity to keep on making

films. Pain and Glory talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation. Also starring Penélope Cruz and Asier Etxeandia. From the Oscar-winning director of Volver, Bad Education, Talk to Her and All About My Mother. (Dir. by Pedro Almodóvar, 2019, Spain, in Spanish with English subtitles, 113 mins., Rated R)
