Just Read: In the early 1900s, China was ripe for revolution.
China had faced years of humiliation at the hands of outsiders. Foreign countries controlled China’s trade and economic resources. Many Chinese believed that modernization and nationalism held the country’s keys for survival. They wanted to build up the army and navy, to construct modern factories, and to reform education. Yet others feared change. They believed that China’s greatness lay in its traditional ways.
What is this?
Nationalist Movement:• Kuomintang
– Led by Sun Yixian(Sun Yat-sen)
– Overthrew the Qing dynasty
• Sun president for only 6 weeks– Nationalism, people’s rights and livelihood – “father of modern China”– Lacked authority and military support
Political Unrest:• Peasants suffered
– Warlords terrorized the countryside– Infrastructure fell apart– Famine
• Gained little from the Treaty of Versailles
May Fourth Movement (1919):• 3,000 students protest• Movement spread• Nationalism
Communist Party:• Mao Zedong among founders• Kuomintang unites with Communist Party• Soviets offered support• After Sun’s death conflict between nationalists
and communists arose– Communists are massacred and forced into hiding
Civil War:• Mao developed new brand of communism
– Rural– Led by peasants– Red Army
• The Long March– Communists outnumbered 6 to 1 – Hazardous 6,000 mile journey to escape– Lasted more than a year– 100,000 began the march, less than 30,000
