The Lungs• The Lungs are paired organs in the chest that

are used for breathing (respiration). • Each lung is between 25 and 30 centimeters

long. • Each day, you take about 23,000 breaths• The air that you breath in contains several

gases, including oxygen, that your cells need to function.

• With each breath, your lungs add fresh oxygen to your blood, which then carries it to your cells.

More than 600 additives can legally be added to tobacco products.

These include

• coffee extract – caffeine addictive• sugar • cocoa - produces bromine gas that dilates the

airways of the lung• Hydrazine - a very toxic chemical used mainly in

rocket fuel • ammonia compounds - speed the delivery of

nicotine to smokers by raising the alkalinity of tobacco smoke

• Formaldehyde – embalming fluid

Long Term effects on the body from smoking

• Effect on the lungs - shortness of breath, coughing, infections like pneumonia and chronic bronchitis, Emphysema (collapse of the small airways in the lungs), cancer

• Effects on the heart and circulation - Heart attack and other coronary diseases, Gangrene due to a decreased blood flow to the legs

• Reduced overall fitness and appearance Difficulty recovering from minor illnesses, more colds as compared to non-smokers, yellowish stain on fingers and teeth, facial wrinkles appear at an early age, making them look older than non-smokers of the same age

• Different kinds of cancers - throat, mouth, bladder, kidney and stomach

Facts about Cigarettes• Tobacco use kills around 111,000 people in the UK every year, more

than 300 every day - as if a plane crashed every day and killed all its passengers, this is around 20% of all deaths.

• About half of all regular cigarette smokers will eventually be killed by

their habit. • 30% of all cancer deaths are linked to smoking.

• Cancers other than lung cancer which are linked to smoking include: cervical cancer, cancers of the mouth, lip and throat cancer, pancreas, bladder, kidney, stomach and liver.
