During this Lenten season we’re studying Luke’s gospel, paying attention to those places throughout it where Jesus lives out his stated mission to “proclaim good news to the poor, freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, freedom from oppression and the favor of God on all people. (Luke 4: 18-19) We don’t

have to look too closely to see this happening on every single page. Luke’s is a gospel filled with Jesus working hard to help the no-bodies in society understand deep within their bones that they are somebodies in the eyes of Almighty God. And that gospel – the Gospel of Jesus Christ – still holds that kind of good news for us and through us today.

The mission statement of our church begins like this: Second Bap-tist Church is committed to fostering meaningful, Christ-centered community. Why? Because we believe that the good life of God is found only with Jesus at the center of life, and is best experienced within Christ-shaped community. In this kind of community we come to understand we are not alone. In this kind of community we come to realize Jesus’ promise to be with us always (Matthew 28:20) and to be with us in a special way through our mutual love and commitment to him. (Matthew 18:20) In this kind of commu-nity we come to know that we are each somebody in God’s eyes and we hopefully experience that truth through our life together. In this kind of community we embrace part of our mission to extend the good life of God to others as we invite them to belong to a people who are committed to seeing all of God’s dreams for them and for this world come true.

As we continue our move toward Easter together, will you consid-er new (or renewed) ways you might experience and share God’s resurrection power through investing in meaningful, Christ-cen-tered community, so that everyone in your life will come to know in the deepest way possible that they are loved, that they are indeed somebody?

With Easter hope,

Jason EdwardsSenior Pastor

We're continuing our partnership with Team World Vision to bring clean water where it is needed most! Kansas City has been chosen as one of four cities in the US to host this race. Your $50 registration fee provides clean water to one child in Africa, and you will run with that child's photo on your race bib!

An opportunity to serve in Bogota without Leaving Home!2BC member Megan Yohe is in her second year of teaching at El Camino Academy in Bogota, Colombia. She teaches 2nd grade and has a desire to surprise each child in her class with a few of his/her favorite books.

From Megan: “My kids’ favorite place in the classroom is our reading tent. If we had nine more of those tents instead of desks, they would be in heaven! They anticipate their day on the calendar when they can read with someone in the tent, work on writing, or just read by themselves. It’s a place filled with pillows, and it takes them to wherever the words on the page lead them. I’m sure you can think of a cozy spot you love to settle into with a good book. It’s just the same for them, and when it’s time to switch activities, they always ask for just a few more minutes.

Reading isn’t just a favorite activity for them, but it’s a favorite thing of mine to do with each of them too! Each story teaches us something different, and every story invites us to explore the world together. Three days each week I have small group reading with four kids at a time, and it’s a great opportunity to focus on reading strategies and skills in a small setting. I see their personalities and their expressions as they get to know the characters in the stories.

I am so thankful for the many books, titles, and various authors that fill the shelves in our classroom. I know it’s not like that in every classroom, but it is definitely a gift we enjoy! The thing that puts a bump in the road is the amount of English and English books they come into contact with when they leave the classroom, which is where you come in! With your help, I would love to surprise my kids with two of their favorite books for them to own and keep at their home. Thanks for helping with this.”

Here’s how to help!1. Access the Book List Google document at 2bcliberty.org/send.2. Pick a student you would like to support or find a book you would like to purchase. (Each link directs you to Amazon to purchase the book.)3. Ship the books or drop them off to Megan’s parents by April 6: Kent & Karin Yohe, 1925 Marvel Lane Liberty, MO 64068

It’s OK to be HumanAn important theme of the Lenten season is the humanity of Christ. In Jesus, God became human and fully experienced the wide range of emotions we all encounter in life. Jesus experienced times of loneliness, sadness, hurt, anger, disappointment, grief, and

abandonment. That is part of being human. Another part of being human is needing help from each other. God never intended us to be completely self-sufficient. Part of God’s plan is for each of us to turn to others for help when we need it.

So when you are experiencing difficult times, don’t struggle alone. Our Stephen Ministers will walk with you, listen to you, encourage you, pray with you, and provide confidential one-to-one care to help you through tough times. Stephen Ministers can bring the love of Jesus back into your life. To learn more about Stephen Ministry, talk to one of our Stephen Leaders. Please click here or contact Mike Lassiter at (816) 781-2824 or Carol Kingery at (816)916-8407.

Meals on Wheels Driver CoordinatorThank you, Bobbie Chasteen, for coordinating for 20 yearsLiberty Meals on Wheels began in the Second Baptist kitchen over 30 years ago and has been a part of our local mission partnerships since. Bobbie Chasteen has been a wonderful coordinator in times when Second Baptist is called on to supplement the regular drivers. After 20 years, Bobbie is “retiring,” and we would love to invite another person to coordinate drivers when it is our assigned month. We have a list of 20-25 people who have driven before.

Meals on Wheels brings nutritious noontime meals to people who find it difficult to leave their home consistently or are returning home after a hospital stay. The meals are picked up at the Election Board (Beside the Fire Department on Mississippi) to be delivered by volunteer drivers on assigned routes of up to 6 stops. Most routes take between one half and one hour to complete. For some clients, the driver may be the only eye to eye contact for the day! If you would be interested in driving or coordinating drivers, contact Mike Lassiter at [email protected] or 781-2824.

Do you love taking photographs? As part of our effort to capture stories of God's work in our congregation, we would like to form a team of photographers who are willing to be ready to snap a photo at times like Sunday services, when new members join, special church-wide events and service ministries (mission trips, etc.). To express interest, contact Kim Halfhill at [email protected] or Connie McNeill at [email protected]. If this brings someone to mind, you could even recommend someone!

Schumacher Elementary Youth MentorNext Training March 29 | 10 a.m. | Rm. 303A Youth Mentor can make a world of difference in the life of a student(s) by spending as little as one hour per week at the school.

To become a Youth Mentor, you need to fill out an application, complete a background check and attend an interview and a two-hour training session. A training will be Tuesday, March 29, at 10 a.m. at 2BC for those who have already signed up to be mentors and also for those who have not yet applied.

If you are interested in becoming a Youth Mentor at Schumacher, contact School Connections Team leader Debbie Lane at [email protected] or (816)781-9281.

Leaders and Leading Conference June 10-12Hold your calendars! Put it on your phone or tablet now—June 10-12, 2016. If you are an elected or appointed leader or have volunteered to lead some ministry or activity in the church—this retreat is for you. Who could that include? Deacons, Sunday School teachers for all age groups, committee members, mission leaders, Stephen Ministers, team members—all are congregational leaders. You may not be serving in a leadership position but you may be invited by a member of any of these groups to come in preparation for serving in leadership in the future. This will be a unique and valuable experience.

Lance Wallace, Senior Director of Communications and Issues Management, Georgia Tech University, Atlanta, GA., will be our speaker. You will learn, you will be inspired, you will be encouraged. You will be a better leader and our church will be stronger. We kick off Friday night at the church with Nick and Tracy doing a Low Country Boil for us; the retreat continues on Saturday until early afternoon. Put it on your calendar now. You will be glad you did and sorry later if you don’t.
