The Prelude The First Nowell with Go Tell It On the Mountain Dan Goeller Fantasia on We Three Kings Brian Balmages The Striking of the Hour

The Invitatory Carol Once in Royal David’s City Text: C. F. Alexander arr. David Willcocks

4:00 soloist: Anne Emery Smith; 6:00 soloist: Harper Thomas[stanza 1: solo; stanza 2: choir; stanzas 3-4: ALL, standing]

• ALL: And our eyes at last shall see Him, through His own redeeming love;for that Child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above, and He leads His children on to the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by,we shall see Him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high;

where like stars His children crowned all in white shall wait around.

• The Bidding Prayer The Reverend Patrick Curles (4:00) The Reverend Claude E. McRoberts III (6:00)

The First Lesson – Genesis 3:1-19 ~ The First Promise of the Gospel The Anthem See Amid the Winter’s Snow arr. Dan Forrest

Alleluia. Alleluia.

See, amid the winter’s snow, born for us on earth below,See the tender Lamb appears, promised from eternal years.

Hail, thou ever blessed morn, hail redemption’s happy dawn,Sing through all Jerusalem: “Christ is born in Bethlehem.”

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Lo, within a manger lies He who built the lofty skies,He, who, throned in light sublime, sits amid the cherubim.

Hail thou ever blessed morn, hail, redemption’s happy dawn,Sing throughout Jerusalem, “Christ is born in Bethlehem.”

Alleluia, Alleluia

Sacred infant, all divine, tender love was Thine,Thus to come from highest bliss, down to such a world as this.

Hail thou ever blessed morn, hail redemption’s happy dawn,Sing through all Jerusalem, “Christ is born in Bethlehem.”

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

The Second Lesson – Isaiah 11:1-9 ~ The Peace that Christ Will Bring is Foreshown

The Anthem The Dream Isaiah Saw Text: Thomas H. Troeger Music: Glenn L. Rudolph

Lions and oxen will sleep in the hay, leopards will join with the lambs as they play,Wolves will be pastured with cows in the glade, blood will not darken the earth that God made.

Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart.Bring the dream Isaiah saw: life redeemed from fang and claw.

Peace will pervade more than forest and field: God will transfigure the violence concealed

Deep in the heart and in lust of gain, ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain.Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart.

Bring the dream Isaiah saw: justice purifying all.

Nature reordered to match God’s intent, nations obeying the call to repent,All of creation completely restored, filled with the knowledge and love of the Lord.

Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart.Bring the dream Isaiah saw: knowledge, wisdom, worship, awe.

The Third Lesson – Isaiah 60:1-6; 19-20 ~ The Prophet in Exile Foresees the Coming of the Glory of the Lord

The Anthem Arise, Your Light Has Come David Danner Awake, my spirit, Awake lute and harp; I will awake at the dawn of day. I will confess You, O Lord among the nations.

I will raise a psalm to You, for Your love is wide as the heavens, And Your truth reaches to the skies!

Wake, awake, for night is flying, the watchmen on the heights are crying; Awake, Jerusalem at last.

Midnight hears the welcome voices, and at the thrilling cry rejoices: “Come forth, you maidens! Night is past.

The bridegroom comes, awake; Your lamps with gladness take!”Allelulia! Prepare yourselves to meet the Lord,

Whose light has stirred the waiting guard.

Now let all the heavens adore you, and saints and angels sing before You.The harps and cymbals all unite.

Of one pearl each shining portal, where, dwelling with the choir immortalWe gather round Your dazzling light.

No eye has seen, nor ear has yet been trained to hear. What joy is ours!Crescendos rise; Your halls resound; Hosannas blend in cosmic sound.

Arise, O Jerusalem! Arise clothed in light!

Your light has come, and the glory of God upon your hearts will shine!Alleluia!

The Fourth Lesson – Luke 1:26-38 ~ The Angel Gabriel Salutes the Virgin Mary

The Anthem Magnificat in G Text: Luke 1:46-55 Music: Charles Villiers Stanford

Lacey Thomas, soprano

My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For He hath regarded the lowliness of His handmaiden.

For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.ForHhe that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is His Name.

And His mercy is on them that fear Him, throughout all generations.

He hath shewed strength with His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek.He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He hath sent empty away.

He remembering His mercy hath holpen His servant Israel, As He promised to our forefathers, Abraham and His seed forever.

The Fifth Lesson – Luke 2:1-7 ~ Luke Tells of the Birth of Jesus The Anthem African Noel André J. Thomas

Sing Noel, sing Noel, Noel, Noel, sing we all Noel, oh sing, O come, ye people, gather here to hear the news of good cheer. The King of Kings, the Lamb of God is born today in Bethlehem. Sing Noel!

The Sixth Lesson – Luke 2:8-20 ~ The Shepherds go to the Manger The Anthem What Sweeter Music John Rutter

What sweeter music can we bring than a carol, for to sing The birth of this our heav’nly King? Awake the voice! Awake the string! Dark and dull night, fly hence away, and give the honour to this day That sees December turn’d to May. Why does the chilling winter’s morn smile, like a field beset with corn? Or smell like a meadow newly shorn thus on the sudden?

Come and see the cause why things thus fragrant be: ‘Tis He is born, whose quick’ning birth gives life and lustre,

public mirth to heaven and the underearth.

We see Him come and know Him ours, Who, with His sunshine and His show’rs, Turns all the patient ground to flow’rs.

The Darling of the World is come, and fit it is, we find a room to welcome Him. The nobler part of all the house here, is the heart,

Which we will give Him; and bequeath this holly, and this ivy wreath, To do Him honour Who’s our King, and Lord of all this reveling.

What sweeter music can we bring than a carol, for to sing the birth of this our heav’nly King?
