LYMPHATIC AND IMMUNE SYSTEM
The lymphatic system is a vital part of the immune system, along with the thymus, bone marrow, spleen, tonsils, appendix, and Peyer's patches in the small intestine. The lymphatic
system is a network of lymph nodes connected by lymphatic vessels. This system
transports lymph throughout the body.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
RELATED DISEASES TO THE LYMPHATIC AND IMMUNE
SYSTEM
• Hodgkin’s disease• Mononucleosis• Adenitis• Sarcoidosis• Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome AIDS
ADENITIS
ADENITIS Also known as bacterial infection of the lymph nodes of the neck, acute adenitis of the cervical lymph nodes may accompany a sore throat and stiff neck, simulating mumps if severe. It is most often related to an oral, a pharyngeal, or an ear infection.
It is usually caused by bacterial infection in one of a series of lymph nodes found running along the sides of the neck
Some of the symptoms:Painful mass in the lateral neck, along the large "strap" muscle, called the "sternocleidomastoids," which tightens when one looks upwards and rotates the head simultaneouslyFeverWarmth and redness in the area of the massIn severe cases, a feeling of "fullness," as if there were a balloon filled with fluid in the area, may be noted.Recent history (within the last several weeks) of an upper respiratory tract infection ("cold"), or sinus or ear
It can be treated antibiotics. In older patients with less severe symptoms, oral antibiotics are usually sufficient. Sometimes, one or two injections of antibiotics will be given as well.
MONONUCLEOSIS
MONONUCLEOSIS
Infectious mononucleosis (often called "mono" or "the kissing disease) is a common viral infection that causes fever, sore throat, and enlarged lymph nodes. Mononucleosis is most commonly caused by the Epstein Barr virus (EBV), and it is most frequently diagnosed in teenagers and young adults.
Mono may begin slowly with fatigue, a general ill feeling, headache, and sore throat. The sore throat slowly gets worse. Your tonsils become swollen and develop a whitish-yellow covering. The lymph nodes in the neck are frequently swollen and painful
It is often spread by saliva and close contact. It is known as "the kissing disease," and occurs most often in those ages 15 to 17. However, the infection may develop at any age.
MONONUCLEOSISSome of the symptoms:
Drowsiness, Fever, General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling,
Loss of appetite, Muscle aches or stiffness, Rash, Sore throat
Swollen lymph nodes, especially in the neck and armpit, Swollen spleen
Treatment The goal of treatment is to relieve symptoms. Medicines such as
steroids (prednisone) and antiviral (such as acyclovir) have little or no benefit.
To relieve typical symptoms: Drink plenty of fluids. Gargle with warm salt water to ease a sore throat. Get plenty of rest. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and fever.
