    FORMATION OF INTERSTITIALFLUID

When blood flows from arteries intocapillaries, the hydrostatic pressure at the

arterial end of capillaries is high

This forces some fluid out through the

capillary walls into the intercellular spaces

This fluid is called interstitial or tissuefluid

    FORMATION OF INTERSTITIALFLUID

It is similar in composition to bloodplasma, but has NO erythrocytes,

platelets as these are too large to passthrough capillary walls

    IMPORTANCE OF INTERSTITIALFLUID

It forms the internal environment of thebody

It bathes the cells and supply them withtheir requirements --- O2 and nutrientswill diffuse from blood

Waste product (CO2 and urea) will diffuseout of the cells into the fluid

    FATE OF THE INTERSTITIAL FLUID

90% of the I.F. flows back into venousend of the capillary system the

    hydrostatic pressure is low

Remaining 10% enters the lymphaticcapillaries and is called lymph

if excess I.F. is unable to return to theblood circ system, it will accumulate andcause tissue swelling OEDEMA

    STRUCTURE OF THE LYMPHATICSYSTEM

Part of the circulatory system and theimmune system

Consisting of a network of lymphaticvessels, ducts and nodes

    No pump

lymph squeezed along thelymphatic vessels by pressure associatedwith movements of skeletal muscles andbreathing

    STRUCTURE OF THE LYMPHATICSYSTEM

TLS starts from the minute blind-endedtubes - lacteals in the ileum & lymphatic

    capillaries in tissues

Lymphatic capillaries joins to form larger

    vessels

    LYMPHATICS

    Semilunar valves presents along thelymphatics

    STRUCTURE OF THE LYMPHATICSYSTEM

Lymphatics from all parts of the body willform 2 large ducts right lymphatic

    duct and thoracic duct

    There were oval-shaped structures called

    lymphnodes along the lymphatics

Large lymph nodes in the neck andarmpits

    STRUCTURE OF THE LYMPHATICSYSTEM

Lymphocytes that produce antibodies arefound in the lymph nodes

Phagocytes in the lymph nodes help toremove bacteria

ROLE OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEMIN TRANSPORT

To transport excess interstitial fluid back tothe blood before entering the heart

    - The right lymphatic ducts open into the rightsubclavian vein

    - The thoracic duct opens into the left

    subclavian vein

    Transports enzymes and hormones

Cholesterol enters the blood via the

    lymphatic system
