Dear Members,

March is officially here, which means we can look forward to days of nice weather and hope-fully lots of fun times with family and friends. Our team is looking forward to a great spring and summer at the Club!

COVID-19 trends in NC have improved so much in recent weeks that restrictions have con-tinued to lift. As we start to prepare for some normalcy, please take a look to our Club cal-endar for future events and activities. Join us for our second Mother-Son Dance on Friday, March 5th, the Fat Axe Throwing event for all families on Sunday, March 7th, and the St. Pat-rick’s Day Tournament and Dinner on Saturday, March 13th. Our famous Oyster Roast will be held on Friday, March 26th and our All-You-Can-Eat Taco Tuesday will be back on March 30th. Following the NC government’s guidelines is our top priority, along with keeping our membership and staff safe and healthy.

The best thing about a holiday is that it happens every year, and Easter is no exception! Easter 2021 will feature more in-person events for the whole family. We will offer our Easter Egg Hunt and Lunch on Saturday, April 3rd. On Sunday, April 4th, we have a very special Easter Bunch buffet for your whole family to enjoy. Availability will be limited, so please make your reservations in advance.

The Stitch Intercollegiate will be back again this year; the tournament will begin on Thurs-day, April 8th and conclude Saturday, April 10th. We have had over 30 days of rain during our bunker renovation, but are pleased to see the continued work. Cart path renovations will soon take place on #10. Despite all the inclement weather, David Apple and his team have continued to improve the golf course by working on the drainage installation on the 4th through the 9th tees. They have more work scheduled to take place on #13 and #16. Due to the wet conditions, the maintenance crew has also been working on the outside edges of the course, cutting small trees and improving airflow through the golf course and side lines.

The golf course is not the only area at the Club which has been hit hard by all the rain. We are currently updating our drainage system adjacent to tennis courts #4 and #5. Along with this vital update, we have made several changes to the in-terior of the Pro Shop and look forward to reopen-ing the space starting this month!

Sincerely,Marielys LeeGeneral [email protected]

Dear Members,

We are looking forward to some great things this year and hope this upcoming golf season cre-ates a new sense of normalcy. We have added new staff to our team to help serve you and have made improvements to our events schedule. We would like to welcome Bryce Gill from Mid South Club in Southern Pines. He will be handling First Assistant duties, including the SMGA. We’ve also added Lee Sunggeon as our Academy Director; he will oversee the Operation 36 program. Combined with our seasoned staff, these new additions are here to make sure you enjoy your golf experience at MacGregor.

Despite the recent inclement weather, the bunker project is progressing nicely. The new bun-kers provide some great new character the golf course, especially on hole #14. I have received many name suggestions for these fairway bunkers. Here are the top 5 — Black Hole, Queen’s Gambit, Byrd’s Dungeon, Clan Gregor’s Tomb, The Poole.

Making memories during golf events is what makes them so great! We encourage you to make some memories at this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Irish Open on Saturday, March 13th. We will have a traditional format of the Green Ball. A couple of years ago, I remember the green ball was lost by a great player on the first hole. You would never think that could happen to this player, and still to this day we chat about it.

Do you have any golf equipment that you are looking to sell? On Friday, March 26th, 8AM-4PM, you will have a chance to sell your outdated golf equipment for a gift card. We are part-nering with a “trade in” company who will be here to assess and buy your old clubs. That Friday evening is the Opening Day MGA Pairings Party for Saturday’s MGA Ice Breaker Open, which will be a 10AM shotgun. After the Pairings Party, head upstairs to the Oyster Roast event!

Best,Jens KlemscheDirector of [email protected]

Stitch IntercollegiateWe are looking forward to holding the NC State/Stitch Intercollegiate once again! We will host eleven teams, including NC State, East Tennessee State, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Davidson, Elon, Duke, Virginia Tech, Campbell, College of Charleston, and the University of Denver. The schedule is as follows.

Thursday, April 8: Practice Round for Teams. Course to open at ~11AM.Friday, April 9: 36 Holes starting at 8AM. The course will be closed all day.Saturday, April 10: 18 Holes starting at 8AM. Course to open at ~12PM.

Viewing of the final will be available behind the 18th green. Spectators may follow golfers on the cart path. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Joellyn at [email protected].

Gentlemen’s TartanWhen someone thinks of MacGregor, they often think “tradition”. One of the most well known golf traditions in North Carolina is the Tartan, our own Member-Guest Tournament. There are many memories that have been made at this event over the years and everyone should try to participateat some point. The field is limited to 72 teams and the cost is $1,350. The format is a Better Ball of Partners, consisting of 5 9-hole matches with the other 5 teams in the flight. All players must have a World Golf GHIN Handicap. Maria Rivero and her team have a special weekend scheduled for all players and their guests. This tournament can’t be put on without our sponsors. Sponsorship opportunities have been extended through Friday, March 5th with in-person registration opening Saturday, March 6th at 7AM for all golfing members whose home Club is MDCC. Online registration will open at 9AM to all golfing members whose home Club is MDCC. If the field is not filled by Saturday, March 13th, registration will open to all members.

Operation 36 Junior Program (Ages 7-17)The Operation 36 program will formally start back up on Monday, March 1st for the 2021 season. Classes will be offered 5 days a week along with 9-hole events, supervised practice, and private lessons to help our juniors work through the 6-level Operation 36 curriculum.

New this year will be an Advanced Juniors class which will be open for players 9-17 years old to apply. Players must have demonstrated beating 36 from Division 4 —150 yards in a 9-hole event. These juniors will have the opportunity to train every week in a more perfor-mance-based environment while still working back to shooting 36 or better from Division 10, the Gold Tees here at MacGregor.

Operation 36 Ladies ProgramIn April we will begin our first Operation 36 Ladies program, the ideal program to introduce and guide someone in the game of golf. Beginners arewelcome! We will run a monthly pro-gram for members which allows them to take weekly classes to work through the curriculum with Coach Lee and also offer monthly 9-hole events. This will be a great prep program to help prepare folks to play in the LGA-Ladies Golf Association.

Ladies,

I hope you are all doing well and staying healthy. I know we are in the midst of winter (cold and wet course conditions), however spring will be here before we know it. I am looking forward to the 2021 season and I hope that you are too! Please note in order to play in any of the LGA events or LGA reserved times, you need to be a member of the LGA. The cost to participate in this year’s activities is $30, which helps support our major events and also covers tee gifts on Play Days. Your account will be charged in March.

There will be a block of LGA times on all Tuesdays from April-October on non-LGA play days for LGA members only. Please refrain from entering TBDs during these times. If there are open times within 48 hours, they may be released to other members.

The goal is to provide a fun environment for little ones to develop their physical, social, emotional, and cog-nitive skills while on the golf course. Class activities will leverage storytelling and creative play to keep kids engaged and delighted.

Dear Members,

As we get into spring season, we are looking forward to warmer weather and hopefully, we won’t have to worry about frozen courts again anytime soon! As we start the spring season for leagues, we are going to have a lot of play on our courts. Please make sure to reserve your courts well in advance when you are wanting to play.

We are going to continue with the same junior clinic weekly schedule in March and April. There will be a 4-week session offered in March and a 3-week session offered in April. We will take a break from clinics the first week of April due to the Easter holiday. Please remember that if you would like to sign up for a monthly session, you will register your child for the first day(s) of that session and that reserves their spot for the rest of the month. For example, if your child would like to come to 10U clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you will sign them up for the first Tuesday AND the first Thursday of that monthly session. We will once again offer Junior Team Tennis league and look forward to providing additional details soon!

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to play adult league tennis this spring! We have formed a lot of strong teams! If you would like to get some extra practice in during the season, we will continue to offer a wide variety of clinics. We will have clinics for 2.0-4.0 women. The weather has not cooperated very well this winter for the 3.0-3.5 men’s clinic, but we hope to continue them in the spring. We are always open to creating new clinics and/or team practices if there is enough demand. Please contact any of our Pros if you are interested in a clinic that we do not currently offer.

We have recently ordered a lot of new MDCC tennis apparel, junior tennis racquets, and sev-eral versions of the new Babolat Pure Drive racquets for the Pro Shop. Please contact any of our Pros if you have questions about equipment, such as which racquet would be the best fit for your game!

Dear Members,

As I’m writing this, we are finally enjoying some spring-like weather. After having what seems like countless inches of rain over the last several weeks, I am excited to begin hosting even more events outside. Our tented Garden Terrace, covered 19th Deck, and Lakeside Deck are great outdoor spaces. We’ve also recent-ly upgraded the scoreboard area with market lights, which makes it a great atmosphere for evening gatherings. While often overlooked, our pool area makes for a nice casual location for birthday parties and small luncheons, and we’ve even been known to hold events at the playground, which has several picnic tables.

No matter what your vision, our team is here to make sure your next event is memorable. As I’ve mentioned before, we have plenty of experience with socially-distant events and we make sure to follow best practices and current regulations. Please consider the Club next time you are planning a party, luncheon, or dinner and remember, room rentals are waived for members.

See you soon,Taylor LankfordCatering [email protected]
