Mackerras described his choice of music: Pineapple Poll is a patchwork of tunes from the Savoy Operas, which pass by so quickly as to bewilder even Sullivan experts. Every bar is taken from the operas, although I found it necessary to ‘cheat’ at the end and insert a few bars from Sullivan’s delightful Overture di Ballo. Occasionally I have made several tunes go together (a trick often used by Sullivan himself ), and those who consider Sullivan incomplete without Gilbert will find that the original words in the opera often fit the situation in the ballet.” The story of Pineapple Poll is based on Gilbert’s The Bumboat Woman’s Story: Pineapple Poll (short for Polly) is a dock-side flower seller, selling flowers to the the sailors of the H.M.S. Hot Cross Bun. The dancers from CMBA tell the story through dance, accompanied by an expanded orchestra under the baton of Sergei Pavlov. Our second one-act is Trial by Jury, Gilbert and Sullivan’s second collaboration, which concerns a “breach of promise of marriage” that is being tried in court. Like modern televised court-room dramas, the plot of Trial by Jury is absurd, and the characters behave as if everything happening were perfectly reasonable. Complimenting Gilbert’s comedy is Sullivan’s witty lyrical music that features several musical jokes. Trial by Jury is a tightly constructed piece as it has no spoken dialogue, so each song carries the plot forward in mock-seriousness. Savoyardage #112 July 2019

In my debut season with the Madison Savoyards, I am delighted to conduct two very different pieces: the well-known and much-loved musical comedy Trial by Jury, and the less known ballet Pineapple Poll.

The story of this ballet’s creation began with a boy in the 1930s attending an all-male secondary school in Sydney, Australia. He had a beautiful voice, and the school’s music teachers often assigned him the leading female roles in the school’s Gilbert and Sullivan productions. A few years later, he became a rehearsal pianist for a professional ballet company. While pursuing his studies in music the idea for a ballet based on the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan formed.

In 1951 the boy was the talented young conductor Charles Mackerras. At the age of 25, he finished the score for Pineapple Poll, which enveloped the famous tunes of Sir Arthur Sullivan into a lush and beautifully imaginative orchestral arrangement. British audiences were delighted.

This summer, we are performing this rarely heard orchestral masterpiece together with Trial by Jury, which showcases young vocal talent at the beginning of their professional careers, joined by singers from our community, and accompanied by our professional orchestra of some of the best Madison-based musicians. Come and join us: we’ll share the music, you’ll share your smiles! — Sergei Pavlov

•The original choreography created by Artistic Director Molly Luksik and faculty member Michael Knight makes the most of Central Midwest Ballet Academy dancers’ technical skills and comedic talents. Every one of our young performers is given an opportunity to shine in this delightful spoof of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas.

This performance partnership with Madison Savoyards offers our students avenues to showcase their talents, building their self-esteem and letting them see that dreams can become reality. There is no greater investment than in the futures of our children, and we feel privileged that the Savoyards has joined us in making that investment through the arts. — Marguerite Luksik, CMBA Artistic Director

Keith Christianson was first on our stage in 2008 as a gentleman of Japan! He returns to our stage for the fourth time as our learned Judge.

Thore Dosdall is a master’s student in vocal performance at UW Madison. He is our traitor all defiant, the Defendant.

Megan McCarthy recently earned her master’s degree in vocal performance from UW Milwaukee. She is our Plaintiff, Angelina.

Jim Chiolino is our Usher, and back with the Savoyards for the 6th time, having first performed with us in Pirates of Penzance in 1987.

Tyler Williams is a lyric tenor based in Milwaukee, WI. He has sung with Lyric Opera Studio and the Florentine Opera Company. He plays our Counsel to the Plaintiff.

Don Dexter is the Foreman of the Jury and a regular member of the Madison theater and musical theater community.

Spring Mikado Sing-AlongWe held a spring sing-along of The Mikado at Oakwood West’s Theater with an enthusiastic crowd of around 80 people. With Mikko Utevsky conducting, Ted Reinke at the keys and several past performers to help lead the way, the audience sang through an abridged version of the show. Several enthusiasts brought scores, while others used the projected lyrics to refresh their memories.

This sing-along allowed us to also discuss the current controversy surrounding The Mikado for propagating negative Asian stereotypes. Specifically, Gilbert’s use of silly names for the characters, along with the frequent portrayal of a general “Asian-ness” and the use of Yellow-face by productions, has made this show a challenging one to produce without causing offense.

We want to continue this conversation with our audience members and the public and are considering ways to produce this show in the future, while being sensitive to the issues mentioned above. Please reach out if you would like to discuss, to our email [email protected].
