How do I buy a bus pass or bus ticket? For first time purchase, the form can be found online on South Hunsley’s VLE under Sixth Form Induction – Bus Pass Form.

If you are not currently at South Hunsley but will be joining us in September, please contact us so we can post or email you a form to complete. If you have a current sixth form bus pass you will receive a reminder to pay for the next half term towards the end of the current half term. You can then pay the required amount to keep the pass or hand your pass in at the end of term.

The price of the pass for each half term is dependent on the length of the half term.

If you have any queries please contact our finance department.

We heavily subsidise sixth form transport to make your journey affordable. To take advantage of these rates you need to buy either a half termly bus pass or bus tickets from our finance office.

Please remember to buy your tickets in advance – if you try and purchase tickets on the bus they will be significantly higher!

Rachel is in Year 12 and currently studies Psychology, Sociology and PE. She is a key member of the PE department and her role as a Sports Captain has seen her gain extra qualifications and skills which will be extremely valuable when it comes to university. Rachel hopes to pursue her love for sport by becoming a PE teacher. Here she tells us more about her sixth form experience so far.

> What’s the best bit about sixth form?

The free lessons are really useful. You get to catch up with the work from your lessons and make your own notes on what you’ve just learnt. It was a big change from Year 11 but I really like the freedom - you’ve still got to stick to your deadlines though and make sure all your work is done on time.

I also really like helping out in lessons with younger year groups – I help out in PE lessons which has given me new experiences and skills for the future.

I’m really happy with the subjects I’ve taken. Sociology and PE are my favourite subjects. PE is a lot harder than I was expecting though! We have four lessons a week; three are theory and one is practical – but it’s going well so far.

> What do you do in your free time?

I’m a Sports Captain. This involves coaching younger students lower down the school, talking to them in assemblies, organising Sport Relief charity events, helping out with Sports Day and Interform competitions and we’ll also be going on the Year 8 Ribblesdale trip as well. We meet every two weeks to discuss fixtures and keep everyone updated with our work…so there’s quite a lot to it!

> What else plays a big part of your sixth form life?

Sport mainly! I’ve completed the CSLA and the JSLA and in Year 13 I’m going to start the HSLA. I’ve also gained a refereeing qualification and I’m a qualified Handball and Rounders umpire as well.

> What are your plans after sixth form?

I want to go to university in Leeds and then become a secondary school PE teacher. Helping out in lessons with younger students has been really useful and given me good experience for university.

> Has your first year of sixth form been what you expected?

Yes. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and I’m glad I stayed at South Hunsley. It’s really convenient and the courses I wanted to study were all here so it just made sense to stay on.

The Magazine of South Hunsley Sixth Form

It’s a big step moving from Year 11 to Year 12… probably bigger than you realise!

Here are few things for you to consider before you start your sixth form journey, including some handy tips from current sixth formers on what they wish they had known before starting Year 12.

> IndependenceOne of the biggest changes between

Year 11 and sixth form is the amount of

independence you will now have, and

with independence comes responsibility.

• You are in charge of your education and if you want

to succeed and the get the best grades possible, it is

down to you and your hard work.

• Teachers will do everything they can to help you, but

ultimately you have to help yourself and complete all

work, not only what your teachers set you to do, but

also your own research outside of lessons.

> Time ManagementRevising for your GCSEs will be good practice at managing your time and you might think that studying only four or five subjects will make your workload easier, but think again!• Make the most of your free periods and study time – the more work you

get done in college the less you have to do at home.

• Try not to miss a day – you could miss out on a whole morning or afternoon of work which is hard to catch up on.

• Don’t panic – getting stressed about the amount of work you have won’t help. Break each subject down into doable chunks and, if you get stuck on a particular topic, ask your teacher for help and go back to it.

> No more School Uniform!

Some people love it and some people hate it, but whatever your thoughts are on uniform, it is another big difference between school and sixth form.• The fear of wearing a different outfit each day

of the week is a serious issue for some people, but after the first couple of weeks you’ll notice that people’s effort levels quickly drop and the comfy joggers and hoodies start to make an appearance.

• Plan your outfit the night before to prevent a last minute panic in the morning.

Preparing for sixth form

I’m not really sure what I would do differently, I

suppose I would do homework the day it was set as well as practising questions from exams straight after learning that topic in class and just generally being more productive throughou the whole year rather than just before exams.

Jenny NewtonOne thing which I wished

I had known about sixth form was just how important study periods are. Many people say they are a great way to revise, get ahead or catch up on work, but these periods seem far more valuable than I expected as, if used correctly they can seriously boost the quality of your learning and therefore your grades. I wish I had realised the true value of them sooner.

Adam Collick

I would say the importance

of the Learning Resource

Centre and how useful it is for

doing work is a big tip as I get

so much work done in there

during free periods. I would also

recommend asking students in the

year above about the new courses

and what they offer so you are

fully aware of what they have in

store. I would also say to approach

teachers more; if anything is

confusing definitely speak to

teachers as they are so helpful.

Sixth Form is a very great place to study as long as you

keep on top of your work. I found the best way of doing this would be to make sure you have your folders organised into all the different topics within the subject. I also find it necessary to do homework as soon as it is set to leave time for independent work.

> OrganisationEven though you’ll be studying fewer subjects than at GCSE, an important part of sixth form is to stay organised and keep on top of your work.

• Use your planner – carry it with you all the

time and record your assignments each day.

• Have a folder for each subject – this will be

a huge help and make your notes easier to

find when it comes to revision.

• Get the right stationery – invest in the

stronger lever arch folders to store your

notes and handouts and always bring

plenty of lined paper to lessons with you.

• Have a filing system – don’t just stuff your

papers into bags or drawers or any other

random place, keep your lesson notes and

handouts all together in one folder.

What I wish I had known

Aneil SangheraI’ve really enjoyed sixth form so far and the flexibility it gives

me. I wish at the beginning of the year I had been more organised and done more independent learning throughout, rather than leaving it until the last minute.

Sixth form is very different to

regular school and I like it a lot

more because the teachers still work

very hard to help you achieve and

the classes are smaller so it helps you

to concentrate. The atmosphere is a

lot different and because you have

chosen all your subjects they are

really fun to learn.

It’s always nice to see how ideas change as different year

groups progress through the school and this year it was decided that we would find a different way to raise money over Christmas time. In December over the course of a week we sold Candy Canes to students - they could write a message to go with it and send it to whoever they wanted and then we delivered them to their lessons.

We also want to start a quiz league for the sixth form tutor groups where teams from each tutor group pay 50p to take part every other Friday morning during form time. This keep things fun but obviously the underlying message is to raise money for charity.

Other ideas we’re trying to work on are organising a school bake off because the Great British Bake Off was such a popular TV programme, and also a sixth form Drama Review where drama students could write short sketches to perform at lunch times for students and staff at a small cost.

We try to keep the ideas varied so people stay interested, and we also try to organise events which students of all year groups can get involved in.

It’s great seeing things through from the initial conception of the idea to them actually happening, and usually being quite successful. I’ve been involved with the group in both Year 12 and 13 and generally

we’ve done very well at getting events organised and making them successful, and most importantly raising lots of money.

Just from being in such an organisational role has meant there’s quite a lot of skills I’ve been able to pick up – from organising the events, arranging meetings, writing up meeting minutes. Even just being able to converse with different members of staff around the school to get ideas approved has been useful. It’s brought a different element to my life at the sixth form, rather than just doing my A Levels.

Clubs & Societies

STUDENTLife

At South Hunsley Sixth Form there are lots of different clubs and societies for you to join which will help you gain new skills, meet different people and have fun. No matter what your interests, there’s sure to be something that takes your fancy. Read about some of this year’s most popular clubs.

“The club owns a state-of-the-art telescope and has been given a grant of £500 from the Institute of Physics to access more advanced technology. We have visited the Brough Observatory where we all got the chance to see Jupiter and its moons through their telescope. Astronomy club gives students and sixth formers the chance to try something new and exciting which they wouldn’t usually have access to outside of school.”

James AitkenYear 12 Physics student and Astronomy Club volunteer

> Debating Society

Georgina RobinsonWhen Georgina Robinson started Year 12 last September she took it upon herself to set up a Debating Society for her and her fellow students.

“Our group of about 18 meet weekly on a Thursday and we’ve had a whale of a time debating on lots of different topics such as: ethics and moral issues, politics, pop culture, religion, controversial issues, recent news, myths and legends.

As a prospective Law student, when I started Year 12 I questioned why we hadn’t already got a debating society as it seemed like such a valuable opportunity and I knew there was a demand for one. So I got a group of friends together and had some introductory sessions, which went fabulously. After that, we established a meeting room and have enjoyed our weekly rambles ever since!”

The Debating Society is a perfect example of what can be achieved when a group of students share an interest and want to set up a club on their own. If the demand is there, go for it!

> MentoringIf you join this society there are lots of different ways you can get involved and support our younger students through their school years.

Peer Mentoring is a great way to help out younger students and to pass on your own first hand advice to those who may be struggling in school. We have many sixth form peer mentors at South Hunsley who mentor students for a variety of reasons; it could be a student who is lacking in confidence or a student who may be struggling with school work. There are drop in sessions during form time and lunch time which are informal and relaxed to enable students to talk through their problems.

Another way you can be a mentor is through the English and SEN departments who have come together to help students improve their reading age. If you enjoy reading yourself and want to help younger students, this is a great opportunity for you to make a difference. You can become a reading mentor for a Year 7 student who you would meet with twice a week and help with their reading.

As well as these there also countless roles available as classroom support. If you have a passion for one of your sixth form subjects and feel you have something to offer, why not pop in to a class lower down the school to share your knowledge and help students with their work.

> Astronomy ClubIf you’re a fan of all things outer space and want to help others learn more about the universe around us, then Astronomy Club could be the club for you.

Set up at the beginning of the year, the Astronomy Club is one of our newest clubs and involves students of all ages. But there’s more to it than just gazing at the stars…

Working with students lower down the school, sixth form students play an important role in the running of the club, helping to organise activities, designing tasks, operating equipment, acting as guest speakers and supporting trips.

“I do Reading Reg in the Library and I’ve really enjoyed the experience so far. The reaction from the younger students is great because they see you as an adult and not just another student. I’ve found that when I come to help them they give you such a great response and a lot of respect.”
