THE ARRIVAL of March and the first day of spring signal the beginning ofthe gardening season. Our gardens come alive with spring blooms and newgrowth, local garden centers swell to bursting with new plants and fresh

stocks of garden supplies, and trays of seedlings begin to show up in windowsills, onporches, and in backyard greenhouses. And, what would spring be without the ea-gerly anticipated parade of wonderful horticultural events sponsored by public gar-dens, plant societies, garden clubs, and community groups across the country? Evenyear-round gardeners have a hard time notgetting caught up in the heady promise ofa new gardening season.

Whether you are seeking out new in-troductions, hard-to-find native plants, ortried-and-true successes for your garden,spring plant sales and garden shows are notto be missed. In addition to some greatfinds, these events offer the chance to talkwith growers and other experts who share your interests. As a bonus, your purchaseswill probably be supporting a worthy cause! This spring, we encourage you to showsupport for your local gardening organizations and let them know that their work isimportant. Check your AHS Member Guide or the “Regional Happenings” section ofthis issue for gardens and events in your region.

With Earth Day on April 22 and National Arbor Day on April 24, spring is also agreat time to get involved. Many horticultural organizations—including the AHS—could not exist without the volunteers who help with special events, maintain gardens

and greenhouses, staff in-formation desks, conducttours, and teach classes.Volunteering offers a re-warding and meaningfulway to give back to yourcommunity. It can also bea great way to learn, meetother gardeners, green upyour community, andmaybe even take a fewextra cuttings home.Spend a morning or after-

noon volunteering this season and help us make America a nation of gardens!One thing you will definitely want to do this spring is make time for this issue of

Editor’s response: Cultivars of Rudbeck-ia hirta are usually short-lived and for themost part tend to be grown as annuals,but they may overwinter under certainconditions. Thus ‘Cherry Brandy’ istechnically hardy to USDA Zone 3, butmost people pull them out—or they dieon their own—after one season.

NOMENCLATURE PROCESS CORRECTIONIn the lively and informative article aboutplant nomenclature by John Friel, pub-lished in the January/February issue, thegoverning body that oversees the processfor plant name changes is misidentified.According to the article, name change pro-posals “are reviewed by specialist groupsunder the umbrella of the InternationalSociety for Horticultural Science (ISHS).”

In fact, rules for botanical names (Latinnames) are revised at Nomenclature Sec-tion meetings of the successive Interna-tional Botanical Congresses and publishedas the International Code for BotanicalNomenclature (ICBN). A botanist may ef-fectively publish a botanical name for anew species or a new combination (for ex-ample, transferring a species from onegenus to another) “by distribution of print-ed material to the general public or at leastto botanical institutions with libraries ac-cessible to botanists generally.”

The new name must, of course, com-ply with the rules of the ICBN and con-tain a description or diagnosis in Latin.There is no prior review or approval byISHS, however. If others have problemswith a name, they may submit a proposalfor its conservation or rejection to the In-ternational Association of Plant Taxono-mists General Committee for study by aspecialist committee and recommendationto the Congress for disposition.

The 2006 edition of the ICBN states:“Like other international codes ofnomenclature, the ICBN has no legalstatus and is dependent on the voluntaryacceptance of its rules by authors, editors,and other users of plant names.” Formore information about the ICBN, visithttp://ibot.sav.sk/icbn/main.htm.

Members-Only Webinars for 2009NOW IN ITS third year, the AHS webinar program, offered ex-clusively for members, is a great way to learn from and interactwith leading horticultural experts without having to leave home.On March 11, author and garden designer Julie Moir Messervy

presented the first webinar for2009, “Home Outside: Creatingthe Landscape You Love.” Thenext webinar, on May 5, will be“A Little Garden Magic: Con-necting Kids to Plants” present-ed by Norm Lownds, curator ofthe 4-H Children’s Garden atMichigan State University. Reg-istration will open on April 8 inthe members-only area of theAHS website at www.ahs.org.

Other upcoming webinars are “Dry Beauty: Strategies for De-signing a Water-Thrifty Garden,” presented by author and gar-den designer Scott Calhoun on July 9, and “Gardening forWildlife” on September 9 with Douglas Tallamy, author of thehighly acclaimed Bringing Nature Home.

Each of these online seminars will take place at 1 p.m. Easterntime and consists of an online slide show with the presenter’s voicestreamed through a computer’s speakers or delivered by telephone.After the presentation, which lasts about an hour, the speaker willtake questions from participants via a chat box. Space is limitedso registration prior to the event is required. A high-speed Inter-net connection is strongly recommended for an optimum view-ing experience during these online seminars.

New AHS Corporate MembersIN ADDITION TO individual memberships, the AHS relieson contributions from other organizations and businesses thatsupport the Society’s mission. The Society recently welcomedseveral new corporate members: Brent and Becky’s Bulbs ofGloucester, Virginia; Furbish Company of Baltimore, Mary-land; and Renee’s Garden based in Felton, California.

Brent and Becky’s Bulbs is a mail-order and retail purveyor ofbulbs and other plants. Owners Brent and Becky Heath also arenationally renowned daffodil hybridizers, lecturers, and consul-tants. Thanks to the company’s generous donation of 15,000tulips, daffodils, and other bulbs, this year’s spring display at Riv-er Farm promises to be especially spectacular.

AHS Joins Sustainable Sites InitiativeTO HELP promote sustainable landscapes, the AHS has become a participant in the Sustainable SitesInitiative (SSI). A collaborative effort between the American Society of Landscape Architects, theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and the United States Botanic Garden, in conjunction withpartnering organizations, this initiative was created to promote sustainable land development and man-agement practices that can apply to sites with and without buildings. “Sustainability is an importantcomponent of the American Horticultural Society’s mission, which is why we feel it is imperative to beactively involved in this program,” says AHS Executive Director Tom Underwood.

Just as green building standards—such as the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED) program—provide guidance and motivation to reduce the environmental impact of buildings, the SSI is developing com-prehensive guidelines and criteria for creating sustainable landscapes. With a focus on improving all the aspects of a landscape, fromthe soil to effects on human health, the SSI is working towards benefiting both natural and manmade sites.

After two years of input and research from a range of experts, SSI issued a draft report of its guidelines and performance bench-marks in 2008. The coordinators will use feedback collected during a public comment period last winter to create an updated set ofguidelines this fall. The initiative also plans to issue a call for pilot projects this year, in order to evaluate “how well the rating systemapplies to design, construction, and maintenance practices.” To learn more, visit www.sustainablesites.org.

Spring Garden Market in Aprilat River FarmTHE AMERICAN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S eagerlyanticipated annual plant sale at its River Farm headquarters in

Alexandria, Virginia, is being ex-panded this year as the Spring Gar-den Market. LIBERTY HYDE BAILEY AWARDGiven to an individual who has made sig-nificant lifetime contributions to at leastthree of the following horticultural fields:teaching, research, communications, plantexploration, administration, art, business,and leadership.

THIS YEAR’S recipient of the AHS’s most prestigious award, Panayoti Kelaidisis the senior curator and director of outreach at Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG)

in Colorado, where he has worked for 29 years in many capacities. At DBG he hasparticipated in major garden expansions and helped amassa plant collection of more than 15,000 taxa. He is also anadjunct faculty member of Colorado State University.

His specialty is high alpine plants, but his interestsrange from growing vegetables and cacti to unusual treesand shrubs. While Kelaidis has introduced a spectrumof American native plants to general cultivation—frombuckwheats (Eriogonum spp.) to penstemons andphlox—he has also promoted awareness of hardy SouthAfrican plants, especially ice plants (Delosperma spp.).He discovered many new plants on plant hunting expe-ditions within the United States and in Africa, SouthAmerica, and Europe. Kelaidis was involved in the plan-

ning and development of the Plant Select® program, which introduces and pro-motes new plants suited to the Rocky Mountain region.

Kelaidis has written more than 100 articles published in plant society publica-tions and popular gardening magazines and contributed chapters to several gardenbooks. Among the numerous awards he has received are the Arthur Hoyt ScottMedal from the Scott Arboretum (2000) and the Marcel LePiniec Award from theNorth American Rock Garden Society (1994).

LUTHER BURBANK AWARDRecognizes extraordinary achievement in thefield of plant breeding.

James R. Ault is the director of environ-mental horticulture at the Chicago Botan-

ic Garden, located inGlencoe, Illinois. Hisresearch includesconventional plantbreeding, propaga-tion, evaluation, andexploration with anemphasis on NorthAmerican native

species. His focus on interspecific hy-bridization has produced plants withunique traits, such as the first orange cone-flower, Echinacea Orange Meadowbrite®,and the first three-species Echinacea hy-brid, Pixie Meadowbrite®. Prior to theChicago Botanic Garden, Ault was theplant propagator-physiologist at Long-wood Gardens in Kennett Square, Penn-sylvania, where he developed new crops forconservatory displays.

PAUL ECKE JR. COMMERCIAL AWARDGiven to an individual or company whosecommitment to the highest standards of ex-cellence in the field of commercial horticul-ture contributes to the betterment ofgardening practices everywhere.

Ronald E. Gass is president of MountainStates Wholesale Nursery in Litchfield

Park, Arizona,which specializesin desert-adapt-ed native and ex-otic plants. Sinceco-founding thenursery in 1969,Gass has col-laborated withbotanists andother nurseryowners to collectand propagate

water-thrifty plants throughout theSouthwest and Mexico in an effort to pro-mote their use in American gardens andlandscapes. His work has resulted in the in-troduction of more than 150 new varietiesof plants over the years, many of whichhave become popular landscape plants.

G. B. GUNLOGSON AWARDRecognizes the innovative use of technologyto make home gardening more productiveand successful.

Soil Food Web, Inc., in Corvallis, Ore-gon, analyzes soil samples to determine

the presence of arange of beneficialsoil organisms thatare key to sustainablelandscapes. Led byElaine Ingham, the

president and director of research, SoilFood Web is a small business that grewout of Ingham’s university research pro-grams. Working with collaboratorsaround the world, Soil Food Web hasdrawn attention to the importance of liv-ing organisms in healthy soil and fosteredthe use of compost, vermicompost, andcompost tea as sustainable solutions tosoil problems encountered by individualgardeners as well as larger public and pri-vate landscapes.

HORTICULTURAL THERAPY AWARDRecognizes significant contributions to thefield of horticultural therapy.

Karen L. Kennedy has spent 23 yearsusing horticultural therapy to improve

the lives of peo-ple with disabil-ities and chronicillnesses. Cur-rently, she is themanager ofwellness pro-grams at theHolden Arbore-tum in Kirtland,Ohio. She also

teaches introduction and programmingcourses in horticultural therapy for theHorticultural Therapy Institute in Den-ver, Colorado. She serves as a mentor forprofessionals and interns training in thefield and speaks about horticultural ther-apy topics regionally and nationally. Shehas served on the American Horticultur-al Therapy Association’s (AHTA) boardof directors and on various committeesfor the organization. Kennedy receivedthe AHTA’s Rhea McCandliss Profes-sional Services Award in 1994.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN AWARDGiven to an individual whose work hasdemonstrated and promoted the value ofsound horticultural practices in the field oflandscape architecture.

Paul Comstock is the head of ComstockStudio, a landscape architecture and

planning practicethat is part of theValleyCrest DesignGroup in Malibu,California. Formerlythe director of land-scape design for WaltDisney Imagineering,Comstock is known

for the natural artistry and cross-culturalcreativity of his designs. Among his mostsignificant projects is his design of Disney’sAnimal Kingdom, a botanically rich themepark in Orlando, Florida. In his work, heoften draws inspiration from his years as aclassically-trained, professional musician.Just as he would consider individual notesand rhythms when writing a song, Com-stock says he considers the habit and eco-logical needs of each plant in order tocompose landscapes that are both evoca-tive and horticulturally sound.

APOND WITHOUT plants is justa pool of water. It needs flowersand greenery along its edges and

on its surface to enhance its beauty and fos-ter a healthy aquatic ecosystem. Andthanks to an increasing desire to gardenwith native plants, aquatic plants native tothe continental United States have been anintegral part of the water garden move-ment since the mid-1990s.

Serendipitously, most of the aquaticplants sold throughout the world are

North American natives. Some of thesewon accolades in Europe before gainingthe attention of American gardeners. It’sa perverse habit of gardeners everywhereto look elsewhere for beauty instead ofdiscovering what exists in our back-yards—or streams, ponds, and wetlandsin this case. The appeal of our nativeaquatic plants lies in what they offer:beauty, wildlife habitat, and reduced po-tential to escape from our gardens andbecome thugs in natural areas.

When considering native water gardenplants, it’s important not to prejudge theiraesthetic potential based on their appear-ance in their natural habitat. “Some ofthem aren’t pretty in the wild,” explainsGreg Speichert, co-author of Encyclopediaof Water Garden Plants and director ofHilltop Garden and Nature Center inBloomington, Indiana. “But when youtake them out and cultivate them, you’reamazed at how much prettier and howmuch bigger they are.”

THINK REGIONALBefore moving on to the plants, I want toreinforce an important caveat: This is a bigcontinent, and not all plants native to thecontinental United States and Canada aresuitable for growing outside their localizednative range. Some may fail to thrive: thenights are too cool, the summers too warm,or the local water’s pH is all wrong. In somecases, the days just aren’t long enough. Forinstance, Arctic iris (Iris setosa), native toMaine, New Hampshire, and Alaska, re-quires 16 or more hours of sunlight. MyTualatin, Oregon, garden gets an averageof 15 hours of summer sun, so I have a de-cent shot at growing this iris with success;however, anyone further south should se-lect a more appropriate native iris.

Other plants grow so well that they be-come invasive. Aquatic plants aren’t affect-ed by climate in the same way as terrestrialplants. Even in bitterly cold winters, pondtemperatures could be 45 degrees Fahren-heit deep below the surface, allowing ag-gressive plants to gain a roothold beforetheir presence is known. (For more on in-vasives, see the box on this page.)

Additionally, the natural ranges for na-tive water plants aren’t as well documentedas they are for terrestrial native plants. Insome cases it is also difficult to determinewhether a newly discovered plant popula-tion in remote areas was in existence beforeEuropean settlers came to North Ameri-ca—the standard definition for determin-ing native plant status—or whether itarrived on the scene more recently.

Now on to the plants themselves, orga-nized by the different areas of water fea-tures to which they are best adapted.

SUBMERGED PLANTSBecause they live almost completely un-derwater, these behind-the-scenes workersare often overlooked for showier aquatics,but they are key to water quality and clar-ity. They efficiently absorb nutrientsthrough their roots and leaves, out-com-peting undesired algae. They are effectivedust busters: their foliage becomes stati-cally charged during photosynthesis, at-tracting soil and other particles until theirfoliage is completely covered. AVOIDING INVASIVESWater gardens bring life to gardensand joy to homeowners, but they docome with some responsibilities, oneof which is choosing plants that won’tescape and damage local ecosystems.

“In the mid-1990s, we noticed thata lot of invasive species were being soldnationwide. We made a determined ef-fort to purge our catalog of species thatcould be problematic in wild environ-ments,” says Eamonn Hughes, co-au-thor of Waterfalls, Fountains, Pools &Streams and owner of Hughes WaterGardens in Tualatin, Oregon. “We triedto increase the use of native material—there are a lot of Northwest native wet-land plants—because of the danger ofinvasive species that have either beenbrought in as ornamental plants orpiggybacked in on other plant materialbrought from overseas.”

Hughes experienced a recent, verysurprising example of how easily ahitchhiker can find its way into waterfeatures. He discovered jellyfish—yes,jellyfish—in his pond, something he’dnever seen, nor expected to see, de-spite 36 years of designing and con-structing water features in Europe andthe United States.

Many nurseries will note in their cat-alogs and on their websites if particularplants are prohibited for sale to specif-ic states. However, it’s wise to checkyour state’s noxious weed list, too. Theseregulations aren’t static; state and Fed-eral weed control agencies update weedlists periodically. And, unfortunately,there are vendors that neglect to followstate and Federal weed laws.

“People need to be careful of whatthey are buying, either online or local-ly, and bringing into their ponds,” saysHughes. “If they are going to be re-sponsible stewards of the waterways,they shouldn’t buy material that is in-vasive in their area.”

And never, ever dump waterplants—native or otherwise—any-where but the compost heap or thetrash. You never know what could behitching a ride. —L.A.

terrupted and the plants eventually die. Submerged plants are sometimes

called oxygenators, but this is mislead-ing, says Charles B. Thomas, editor-in-chief for the Online Journal of WaterGardeners International, past presidentof Lilypons Water Gardens inAdamstown, Maryland, and founder ofthe International Waterlily and WaterGarden Society. “It’s true than in thepresence of sunlight, these plants do pro-duce a nice amount of oxygen…howev-er, they consume oxygen at night,” notesThomas. “They are beneficial butshould not be relied on for oxygen pro-duction. The best thing to do is to let thewater circulate, let it splash. That’s howthe water will pick up oxygen.”

Thomas recommends at least onebunch of submerged plants for everysquare foot of water surface for ponds thatare 100 square feet and smaller. For largerponds, one bunch for every two squarefeet of water surface is sufficient.

Carolina fanwort (Cabomba carolini-ana, USDA Zones 6–11, AHS Zones12–6) and hornwort (Ceratophyllum de-mersum, Zones 6–9, 9–6) are two of thebest water cleaners. To clean the plantsand pond in one quick, slick action, usea bucket to scoop the plants from thepond, then rinse them off before return-ing them to do their job all over again.

Carolina fanwort, native to the south-eastern United States, has fan-shaped,deep green leaves with dark red or purple

undersides. Abundant tiny white flowerswith yellow centers appear on or near thesurface in summer. It grows in sun orshade in one to 10 feet of water. Speichertcalls it a “versatile and attractive sub-merged aquatic” but warns that it can be-come weedy even within its native range,especially in newly built, clean ponds.Even small fragments will produce newplants. It’s banned in several states out-side its native range.

Hornwort is native throughout NorthAmerica and much of the world. Branch-es of thick, dark green, bristly foliageform large mats with no true roots in

sunny to partly shaded ponds from oneto 10 feet deep. Tiny white to creamyflowers appear in midsummer. In winter,it sinks to the pond bottom, providingvaluable habitat for fish and other aquat-ic life. It’s been an excellent performer inmy pond and a favorite egg repository forPacific tree frogs.

Dwarf sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata,Zones 5–11, 12–5), a North Americancousin of the more familiar arrowhead (S.latifolia), carpets the bottoms of pondsthat are four inches to six feet deep. Ifplanted at the right depth, the showy, half-inch diameter, white flowers will appear insummer just above the water’s surface. Thiseasy grower thrives in full sun and toleratesslowly moving water.

FLOATING AND DEEP WATER PLANTS Floating plants are among the easiest togrow. Potting is unnecessary, just toss themin the pond and let them float around.Their dangling roots draw in nutrients andfilter suspended particles, limiting algaebloom and keeping the pond clear. Waterdepth is not a limiting factor for them, anadaptation unique to this plant category—and also a reason for caution. Case inpoint: the non-native water hyacinth is amajor water pest, banned in warm winterstates from Florida to California.

Deep-water plants—which include wa-terlilies, lotuses, and waterlilylike plants—

are sometimes incorrectly called float-ing plants because their foliage floatson the pond surface; however, theirroots are anchored in soil. Waterdepth requirements vary, but in gen-eral they prefer still water.

Whether their roots dangle belowthe water surface or grow in soil, theseplants serve similar purposes. Theyshade the pond, block ultravioletlight, and shelter pond life frompredators. Reducing ultraviolet light,along with reducing the nutrientlevel, helps control the growth ofalgae. Shaded water is cooler, andcooler water holds more oxygen thanwarm water. Although it might seem,then, that completely covering apond’s surface would be best for ponddenizens, too many plants depleteoxygen from the water, potentially re-ducing it to insufficient levels for fishand other aquatic animals. As a gen-eral rule, cover about one-third of thewater surface with floating and deep-waterplants. Container water gardens withoutaquatic life are an exception; you can fillevery inch of water surface.

Fairy moss (Azolla caroliniana, Zones4–11, 12–1) is a floating fern native to theeastern half of the United States fromTexas to New England and as far north asWisconsin and Michigan. Tiny brightgreen leaves that look like a cross betweenminiaturized arborvitae branches andspikemoss (Selaginella kraussiana) turn

red in sunlight and in fall. It’s a delicate-looking plant that can be invasive; highwater turbidity and low nitrogen levelsmay limit its growth. Remove excessplants by net or pond skimmer and addthem to garden beds—they dry out andbreak down almost instantly, like grassclippings—or to the compost heap.

Little floating heart (Nymphoides corda-ta, Zones 6–10, 10–4), is native to much ofeastern North America. Its dainty two-inchleaves look like miniature lily pads and itbears starlike white flowers in summer. It

grows best in a couple of feet of waterin sun or part shade.

American lotus (Nelumbo lutea,Zones 4–11, 12–1) is an enchantress

with large, wavy-edged round foliage, paleto medium yellow flowers in summer, andintriguing seedheads. The flowers appearabove the foliage and play a game of peek-a-boo during their three- to four-day lifespan, their color fading as they age. Afterthe petals drop away, the lotus seedpods aredecorative in their own right, graduallychanging from yellow to green to brown.Native to the eastern United States, Amer-ican lotus is a heat lover, growing bestwhere summers are hot and humid. before placing it in your pond.Start young plants in shallowwater—an inch or two over thesoil surface—then graduallymove them to deeper water as thestems lengthen. Thomas findsthat once established, they per-form well in six to 12 inches ofwater. Crosses between Americanlotus and other hybrids haveyielded several popular selections,including those developed by thelate water lily and lotus hybridiz-er Perry D. Slocum.

North American native cow-lily (Nuphar lutea, Zones 3–9,9–1) has waterlilylike leaves (it is amember of the waterlily family)that either float or are held aninch or two above the water.Sphere-shaped, bright yellowflowers appear in summer two tofour inches above the water. It can spreadup to six feet wide with pond depths of oneto two feet.

MARGINAL PLANTSThe margins of water features are suited tothe broadest selection of native water gar-den plants. This grouping of plants goes byseveral different labels: shallow waterplants, bog plants, and marginals; the lastterm is the one I have chosen to use.

Speichert describes these plants as the“most misunderstood and underratedcomponents of the aquatic landscape.”He points out that “they aregood for soil stabilization andwater filtration, they add habi-tat diversity for animals andinsects…they are the borderperennials for the pond, theycome into flower early, late,and add textural interest.”

Marginals grow in moistsoils or in varying depths ofwater over their crowns. Mostare fairly easy to grow in pondswith roughly neutral pH butthere are exceptions—such aspitcher plants (Sarracenia spp.)and northern calla lily (Callapalustris)—that demand acidicconditions. Pitcher plants, aswell as other carnivorous plants, also growbest in fertile soil. These requirements canmake them fairly tricky pond compan-

ions, but they are great for growing in con-tainers and bogs (to learn how to growpitcher plants, click on “The Potted Bog,”a web special linked to this article on theAHS website at www.ahs.org).

Umbrella plant (Darmera peltata andits cultivar ‘Nana’), floating marshmarigold (Caltha natans), cowslip (Calthapalustris), and skunk cabbage (Lysichitonamericanus) are good bets in regions withcool summer nights, but they will pout in

hot weather, their growth gener-ally diminishing each year untilthey completely fade away. Hotweather-loving natives includemallows (Hibiscus coccineus andH. moscheutos), and irises suchas copper iris (I. fulva), theLouisiana iris hybrids, and Vir-ginia iris (Iris virginica).

A grassy shoreline filled withopen, reedlike plants, such assweet flag (Acorus calamus, A.americanus), rush (Juncus effusus,J. patens) and water willow (Jus-ticia americana), provides im-portant habitat for frogs andother amphibians.

Lizard tail (Saururus cernu-us, Zones 2–11, 12–1), native tothe eastern U.S., has heart-shaped leaves and noddingspikes of sweetly scented, white

flowers that bloom for about a month insummer. Lizard tail spreads by under-ground runners, growing 12 to 36 inchestall. Plant it in moist soil or water up tosix inches deep in sun to part shade,though it will flower even in deep shade.

that will grow two to three feet out intothe water with its roots dangling below,giving small fish a great place to hide.Pink flower buds open to fragrant, whiteblooms in early summer just above thefoliage. Plant in one to three inches ofwater in sun to part shade.

Golden club (Orontium aquaticum,Zones 6–10, 10–4) is a tightly growing,clumping marginal species with velvety,lance-shaped foliage up to 18 inchestall.This arum family member is nativefrom Massachusetts south to the GulfCoast and Texas, but is listed as endan-gered in several states. Its intriguingwhite flower spikes, which terminate ina golden yellow spadix, appear in sum-mer. Plant this easy grower in water upto 12 inches deep. It will grow best insun to part shade, although it can sur-vive in deep shade.

GOING BEYOND THE ORDINARYWith such a wonderful selection of na-tive water garden plants to grace our gar-dens, gardeners should look beyond thefamiliar pickerel weed (Pontederia corda-ta) and cattails (Typha latifolia) to dis-cover other aquatics that merit greateruse. Some are widely available but youmay need to seek out less common choic-es at native plant nurseries or mail-ordercompanies. With careful selection andartful blending of shapes, textures, andcolors of foliage and flowers, your pondwill become a water garden that appealsto the senses, sustains wildlife, and treadslightly on the natural world. �

IN A QUIET corner of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, there is an un-marked track off a country road in what used to be a highly industrialized andprosperous part of the Keystone state. This area southeast of Pittsburgh was at

one time the heartland of the coal industry, run in the late 19th and early 20th cen-tury by Henry Clay Frick, once known as “America’s most hated man” for his ruth-less business methods. Brass and silver works, steel and iron factories, and machineshops, fuelled by local coke, were all significant local industries for decades.

At the end of the gravel track, nestled in woods growing on the spoil from the mines,now lies the Primrose Path, a small nursery and plant breeding operation focusing pri-marily on American native plants. From this isolated location, Charles and Martha Oliv-er have quietly launched an exciting range of foliage and flowering plants that has inspiredgardeners to add new colors and textures to temperate gardens around the world.

For more than 20 years, the Olivers have dedicated themselves to the study of nativeplants and plant communities both in their backyard and on plant hunting trips to re-mote locations throughout North America. Along the way they have shared their in-sights and inspiration with those they encountered through their nursery business, theirinvolvement with likeminded plant buffs in groups such as the North American Rock

Garden Society (NARGS), and their lec-tures to garden groups and college stu-dents. But they have influenced a muchbroader audience—gardeners around theworld who grow any of their numerousplant introductions—through their plantbreeding work.

IN THE AFTERMATH OF MININGAt the Primrose Path, the house, nursery,garden, and nature intermingle seamless-ly. In spring, the woods are carpeted withphlox that spread almost up to the door.In early fall, the wingstem (Verbesina al-ternifolia) is like headhigh streaks of but-ter spread across the tree foliage; it standsalongside the tomatoes in the vegetablegarden and sneaks up to the big shadehouse where potential new introductionsare being assessed.

A century ago, this 107-acre tract wasdeep-mined for coal. Mining ended in

1914 and the woods have since re-assert-ed themselves. The fundamental soil isderived from a mix of shale, coal, sand-stone, and limestone—with a pH thatvaries from neutral to acidic—but theresidue of mining operations has left anunusual balance of metals that causessome new plantings to grow well at firstbefore root growth stops.

Because of the demanding nature oftheir breeding program, the Olivers havecreated raised beds filled with their ownsoil mix for their trial gardens. This en-sures that any observed variation in indi-vidual plants derives from the plantsthemselves and not from the mixed lega-cy of coal mining.

THE PRIMROSE PATHWhen Charles and Martha Oliver movedto the property in 1972, they initially rana laboratory for testing drinking water.They launched the Primrose Path nurs-ery in 1985.

Charles majored in biology at Harvard,then, anticipating a career in college teach-ing, he earned a doctorate from Yale spe-cializing in the evolutionary genetics ofbutterflies and moths. But he had startedgrowing native plants at an early age andjoined the American Fern Society whilestill in high school. Martha earned a mas-ter’s degree in English at the University ofPennsylvania, taught English, and has writ-ten for many publications. Through studyof native plants in the wild, she developeda rich understanding of their communities.Martha also named the nursery, inspiredby a passage in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

At first the Olivers grew and sold a widerange of perennials, but it became clearthat a more specialized focus was needed.So they drew on their love of native plantsand their location in extensive woodlandsto concentrate on native shade plants.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Charles’s back-ground in genetics influenced him tolook for ways of improving native plants.His first introductions came in 1988.These included a dwarf form of blue lo-belia (Lobelia siphilitica), still growing inthe garden at Primrose Path, and selec-tions of native phlox: Phlox ✕procumbens‘Rosamund’ and P. subulata ‘AlleghenySmoke’ and ‘Green Ridge’. This was alsothe year Charles and Martha introducedtheir first hybrid heucheras. In 2001, the

Olivers discontinued the retail mail-orderside of their business to concentrate onbreeding and supplying young plants towholesale growers.

Most of the plants raised at PrimrosePath are propagated by tissue culture. Tinypieces are cut from the growing point ofthe plant and placed under lights in ster-ile conditions on a nutrient medium.They can then be repeatedly split in thesame sterile conditions, allowing a largenumber of plants to be propagated quick-ly. Each plantlet is then transferred intocompost and grown on in the greenhouse.

The Olivers have their own tissue cul-ture laboratory, housed rather incongru-ously, in an old barn. Here they maintainstocks of their varieties so that virus-free,true-to-name material can be supplied toother laboratories and wholesale growers.

PLANT BREEDINGIn all, the Olivers have now introducedmore than 80 new plants, including 39heucheras (six became available to garden-ers for the first time this year), 19 foam-flowers (Tiarella spp.), nine heucherellas(✕Heucherella spp.)—intergeneric crossesbetween heucheras and foamflowers—12phlox, and a variety of other plants.

The success of their breeding programis evident from the growing list of whole-sale growers that have signed on to sell theirplants, including Blooms of Bressingham,Walters Gardens, Skagit Gardens, andNorth Creek Nurseries. In 2008, Mon-rovia, one of the largest wholesale plant

suppliers in North America, included fourof the Olivers’ heucheras—‘Crystal Spires’,‘Caroline’, ‘Moonlight’, and ‘Rose Majes-tic’—in its line of new plant introductions.

“What initially piqued my interest inthe Olivers was their breeding program,which focuses on including indigenousplant species rather than just crossing hy-brids that are already in the business,” saysNicholas Staddon, Monrovia’s director ofnew plant introductions. According toStaddon, two attributes distinguish theOliver-bred heucheras Monrovia is intro-ducing—a vigorous growth habit and larg-er and more attractive flowers. “A lot hasbeen done with foliage color in heucheras,”says Staddon, “but Charles’s focus on flow-ers is of particular interest to us.”

Almost all the selection and plantbreeding at Primrose Path is based on na-tive species. A few of the Olivers’ intro-ductions, such as ‘October Skies’, anexceptional selection of Aster oblongifoliusthat has a shorter, bushier habit than thespecies, have been discovered growing ontheir property. Most, however, are hybridsof plants selected in the wild for special fea-tures or grown from wild-collected seed.

Bringing together native species fromdifferent regions that would not normal-ly grow together—and so would normal-ly not hybridize—and using forms withvaluable ornamental features, the Olivershave created new garden plants that cantake advantage of their thousands of yearsof adaptation to the rigors of the wild.

HEUCHERASHeucheras, sometimes called coral bells,have always been their priority, and fromthe beginning, one of the primary aimsof the breeding program has been to de-velop plants that are tough and reliablein the garden. By using as parents speciesnative to the eastern United States, suchas H. pubescens and high-altitude formsof H. alba and H. villosa, the selectionsare naturally hardy.

“I’d collected seeds of H. pubescensfrom Larenim Park in the shale barrens ofWest Virginia,” says Charles, recalling hisearly introductions, “and grew those withthe best silvered foliage with a pink flow-ered form of H. ✕brizoides. From that

came the ‘Larenim Hybrids’, with greenfoliage lightly marbled in silver and withpink or white flowers.

“At about the same time, I also grew H.✕brizoides ‘White Cloud’ alongside themarbled H. pubescens and this gave us‘White Marble’, introduced in 1995, withattractive silvered green foliage and un-

usually large white flowers aging to pink,”notes Charles. Crossing ‘MontroseRuby’—a vigorous hybrid of H. americanaand H. villosa with silver-red leaves devel-oped by North Carolina plantswomanNancy Goodwin—with ‘White Marble’created the exceptional hybrid ‘Quilter’sJoy’, which remains one of the most pop-ular Primrose Path plants. The foliage,with its bronze and silver mottling, set thetone for many later introductions and iscomplemented by contrasting white flow-ers. Being only two generations from itstough wild ancestors, ‘Quilter’s Joy’ hasproved a very hardy plant.

Crossing ‘Quilter’s Joy’ with the verylarge-flowered ‘Chatterbox’, whose pinkblooms are set against silvery patternedgreen leaves, begat the excellent ‘Regina’.

Of course, the very best foliage colorhas always been a top priority, but otherparent species, including H. pubescensand H. sanguinea, also bring large flow-ers. By the time ‘Quilter’s Joy’ and its de-scendent ‘Harmonic Convergence’ wereintroduced in 1997, they mingled the

blood of four species: H. americana forsilver leaf patterns; H. pubescens for silverleaf patterns and large flowers; H san-guinea for large and colorful flowers; andH. villosa for purple leaf color.

Charles also created the Petite Series, arange of neat and compact varieties bestsuited to raised beds and containers andvery popular with rock gardeners. Again,

wild species began the work. H. pulchella,from New Mexico and H. hallii from Col-orado are both dwarf, sun-loving, high-al-titude species, and crossing the tworesulted in the six-inch-tall ‘SanPico Rosi-ta’ with dark pink buds opening to palepink flowers above green leaves. Crossingthis with ‘Regina’ produced the six namedforms that make up the Petite Series.

The crossing of ‘Petite Bronze Pearl’and ‘Harmonic Convergence’ resulted inplants with highly silvered leaves and up-right stems of white or pink flowers. Fourwere named, including ‘Silver Scrolls’, themost popular of the group, and ‘Raspber-ry Ice’, which the Olivers feel best com-bines excellence of both flower and foliagewith bright silvery leaves. The large pinkflowers also sit attractively close to themound of leaves.

Heuchera alba, sometimes lumped bybotanists with H. pubescens, came intothe mix relatively recently as a result ofbreeding stock found high in the moun-tains of West Virginia. Using theseplants, with their unusually large creamyflowers, the Olivers began to increasetheir focus on improving the flowerpower of their plants while maintainingexcellent foliage color and pattern.

Using H. alba as a parent resulted inthe unusually large, leafy, and colorful

‘Shenandoah Mountain’ as well as ‘PurpleMountain Majesty’ and the newly released‘Moonlight’, all with unusually large flow-ers blooming above the familiar high stan-dard of patterned leaves.

They brought the coloring of ‘BronzeWave’, their selection of H. villosa withbronze-purple foliage which keeps itscolor well, into the mix by crossing it witha number of silver foliage types. However,out of many hundreds of seedlings, only‘Frosted Violet’ stood out.

Relying again on wild populations,they crossed a very large-flowered form ofH. cylindrica with ‘Chatterbox’ to create‘Coral Bouquet’, which has showy pinkflowers over lightly silvered leaves. This isnow being crossed with the highly silveredforms to combine the largest, most color-ful flowers with fine foliage.

When I visited Primrose Path last Sep-tember, I was impressed by the heucheratrial bed. During a long drought, theplants had not been watered at all. The re-sult, of course, was that many had simplydied—but those that remained hadproved they could cope with such harshconditions. Combining drought tolerancewith cold-hardy parentage ensures that theT

Olivers will continue to create unusuallyrobust plants capable of thriving in a widerange of conditions.

FOAMFLOWERS AND HEUCHERELLASAlongside the popular heucheras, the Oliv-ers have worked to develop foamflowers(Tiarella spp.) that combine colorful flow-ers with attractive foliage. Starting withlocal wild-collected forms, selected plantsof the eastern T. cordifolia were crossed to-gether to create ‘Tiger Stripe’, with palepink flowers and often boldly maroon-marked foliage. This was in turn crossedwith a deeply dissected form of the west-ern T. trifoliata forma laciniata leading to‘Martha Oliver’, which has densely packedflower heads and deeply dissected foliage

striped in maroon. ‘Elizabeth Oliver’, withnoticeably scented pink flowers and de-lightfully patterned daintily cut foliage, fol-lowed. The later ‘Pink Brushes’ isexceptionally prolific and has a longerflowering season, from spring into sum-mer, a trait which they have succeeded inbuilding in to later introductions.

It was perhaps only natural to startcrossing the two genera to createheucherellas (✕Heucherella spp.) which,while combining the best of both parentgenera, have proven overall less robust inthe garden. Charles started making cross-es in the late 1980s that led to ‘Snow

White’ and ‘Pink Frost’, both with silveredgreen foliage shading to maroon at thebase. Later crosses produced the unusual-ly vigorous ‘Quicksilver’.

The necessity to pamper the heucherel-las brings us back to the Olivers’ enthusi-asm for creating tough, gardenworthyplants. “Too many plants are out on themarket,” Charles says, “just because theylook different, but an awful lot are not verygood plants. I want to breed plants thatwill still be around in 20 or 30 years. I wishwe could all think more about what sort ofplants we really want, and test them more.”

The Olivers’ work on these heucheras,tiarellas, and heucherellas has inspiredother breeders in North America and Eu-rope to focus on these plants, which havenow become far more valuable in the gar-den—and immensely valued by garden-ers. And they collaborated on an

influential book, Heuchera, Tiarella andHeucherella: A Gardener’s Guide, pub-lished in 2006 by B.T. Batsford, Ltd.

Primrose Path has also selected and in-troduced other fine plants and continuesto develop others. There have been a num-ber of woodland phlox, a sedum, anevening primrose (Oenothera spp.) called‘Sunrise’, and a lovely yellow primrosecalled ‘Spring Sunshine’ that resembles alarge-flowered form of Primula elatior.

EXPANDING NATIVE OPTIONSWhen time allows in their schedule, theOlivers continue to explore natural areaslooking for potential breeding stock. Andthere are other projects underway closer tohome. For instance, Charles has beenworking with a number of well-markedforms of native Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisae-ma triphyllum) he has selected from theOlivers’ woodlands. “He thinks it might beinteresting to cross them with some of theJapanese arisaemas,” notes Martha.

For nearly a quarter century, the Oliv-ers have drawn on their passion for nativeplants and their understanding of how togrow them. Combining this with theirscientific background and artistic sensi-bilities, they have expanded the palette ofnative plants available to gardeners. In sodoing, they’ve also helped heucheras be-come among the most popular perenni-als in the country. �

THE NAME Coreopsis translatesto “like a bug”—that should tellyou something right there. If

that is not enough, its common name,based on the size and color of its seeds, istickseed. How many bugs (or ticks) doyou cherish? Most of us spend our livestrying to exterminate bugs. And as forticks, well, my dog, Hannah, can giveyou her opinion of those itchy things.

These plants, however unpleasant thename, have been an important part of theAmerican perennial plant palette forsome time. For starters, there are lotsfrom which to choose—between 80 and120 species, depending on who’s count-ing—all native to North America. Andcertainly for a rookie gardener or a be-ginning landscaper, coreopsis is often astaple, because some of them—especial-ly the familiar common tickseed (C.grandiflora), which is not one of my fa-vorites, as you’ll see later on—are amongthe easiest plants to produce and there-fore are always available to unsuspectinggardeners in the spring.

In talking about coreopsiswith a number of gardeners, I find thatsentiments differ, but the comment ofJudy Laushman, who is director of theAssociation of Specialty Cut FlowerGrowers and a gardener in northernOhio, struck a chord. “When I thoughtabout it, I realized coreopsis is one of

those plants that I buy one spring, tendlovingly throughout the season, then acouple years later think, ‘Hey, didn’tI…wasn’t there…? I could’ve sworn Iplanted some coreopsis there’.”

In my travels around the country Ihave closely scrutinized these plantsgrowing in many different regions; I havealso grown many of the newer cultivarsin the University of Georgia’s trial gar-dens in Athens. So before I start to soundlike a coreopsis scrooge, let me make itclear that I applaud the work of plantbreeders who are providing some out-standing hybrids. I also want to tip myhat to some of the native plant enthusi-

asts, especially those in the Midwest, whohave been extolling the virtues of some ofour lesser-known native Coreopsis species.

I should mention that, in preparingthis article, I consulted Nick Lomas, astudent at the fabulous Niagara ParksSchool of Horticulture in Niagara Falls,Ontario. Lomas, whom I met last yearduring a sabbatical from the University ofGeorgia, is a terrific horticulturist withthe potential to be one of Canada’s finest.

So, between the young lad and the oldman, here are a few coreopsis to consider.

GETTING STARTED WITH TICKSEEDSNative from Georgia south to Florida andwest to Kansas and New Mexico, com-mon tickseed (C. grandiflora, Zones 4–9,12–1), is a great beginner’s plant. It is soeasy to grow in the nursery that mostplants are in full flower in their contain-ers as we push our carts through the aisles.Plants grow 12 to 15 inches tall and maybear single, double, or semi-double yel-low flowers most of the season. The yel-low flowers glow above the dull greenleaves in the spring and continue to

bloom after planting. I recommendgrouping at least a half-dozen plants inthe front of the garden or two to three ina container so the flowers and foliage canbe appreciated. But I know you’re think-ing, if this plant is so good, why am I oneof its biggest critics?

The answer is that this is a great annu-al, or a biennial at best, and if sold as suchI would be its biggest supporter. It toleratescold temperatures, but suffers badly in theheat of the summer, often contracting dis-eases such as leaf spot and botrytis. It doesnot tolerate wet soils, so excellent drainageis essential. One of its greatest assets is alsoone of the gardener’s greatest challenges—Flowers are produced constantly but onlyif the spent flowers are deadheaded. If notremoved, they become blackened and dis-eased and, by midsummer, the plant stopsflowering, resulting in a wet dog look thatover time becomes a dead dog look.

Make no mistake, I recommend thisspecies to my daughters because of its easeof culture, but I tell them to put it some-where accessible so flowers can be easily re-moved. They nod their heads, acceptDad’s free flowers, and hope he doesn’tvisit in the middle of the summer.

Improved cultivars have been devel-oped, and although I don’t feel many area great deal better than the species, here area few that are worth a try.

‘Early Sunrise’ was an All-America Se-lections winner in 1989. Plants are easilyraised from seed and bear bright yellow,semi-double, two-inch-wide flowers. Itwas a breakthrough plant for producersthat allowed coreopsis to be in flower forspring sales. Although not persistent, it’sexcellent for a couple of years.

Flying Saucers (‘Walcoreop’) offersgood flower productivity and a compacthabit. Its flowers are yellow to gold.

‘Rising Sun’ has earned some accoladesfrom the Europeans, being named aFleuroSelect Gold Medal winner in 2005.Its large double flowers are yellow with amahogany base.

‘Sundancer’ is an exceptionally goodplant from Dupont Nursery in Plaquem-ine, Louisiana. Plants, which were select-ed from ‘Sunray’ in 1992, exhibit a dwarfhabit, semi-double flowers, and a longbloom period. They have looked verygood in our trial gardens.

and wine-red markings in the center. ‘Sunray’ is an old-fashioned selection

that has stood the test of time. Plants beartwo-inch-diameter double flowers ontwo-foot plants for eight to 12 weeks.

‘Tequila Sunrise’, sometimes listed as ahybrid, is either the ugliest or the prettiestplant you have ever seen. Its variegated fo-liage is green and white with a hint ofpink, topped by golden single flowers. Ihave always enjoyed the plant, but I seemto be in a minority. It does not have greatvigor and will likely not persist for morethan two years.

Lanceleaf coreopsis (C. lanceolata,Zones 3–8, 9–1) has a similar native rangeto common tickseed and behaves inmuch the same way in the garden. Itgrows one to two feet tall and bears gold-en yellow flowers on slender stems fromspring to early summer. Because it tendsto reseed, it is often used in roadsidewildflower plantings and meadows.‘Goldfink’, a dwarf selection growing to10 inches tall with handsome yellowflowers that have an orange eye, is prob-ably the best of the cultivars.

My experience with mouse-ear core-opsis (C. auriculata, Zones 4–9, 9–1) hasbeen much more positive, but this nativeof the American Southeast is an early

spring-flowering plant only. Stay awayfrom this plant if the label does not say‘Nana’ or one of the other cultivars listedbelow, because the species itself is quitetall—to two feet—and not as useful forthe garden.

‘Nana’ grows to about eight inches andproduces dozens of bright yellow flowersover foliage that remains in good condi-tion all season if moisture is provided. If

plants dry out, however, the foliage self-destructs. Don’t expect flowers after lateJune in the North, late May in the South.

By the way, flowers of the true ‘Nana’are sterile and the leaves are less than aninch long. It seems that over time, somenatural hybridization has occurred withcultivars of C. grandiflora. The resultanthybrid is taller than ‘Nana’, shorter-lived,not as stoloniferous, and the flowers arenot sterile. If plants are grown from seed,it is probably not ‘Nana’.

In addition to ‘Nana’, a couple of newerselections I quite enjoy are ‘Jethro Tull’ and‘Zamphir’. These are usually listed as cul-tivars of mouse-ear coreopsis, but thereseems to be some hybrid vigor involved.‘Zamphir’ is not as good a performer as‘Nana’, but has proven to be a winner.Plants are also dwarf, usually reaching 10to 15 inches. The flowers are a golden yel-low, but what is most unusual is that theray flowers are “open” at the ends, and looklike wine flutes, quite different from othercultivars. ‘Jethro Tull’, which originatedfrom ItSaul Plants in Georgia, resembles‘Zamphir’ but is even better. It has moreconsistently fluted ray flowers. We have en-joyed this 12- to 15-inch-tall selection in thetrial gardens because it has a long flower-ing period and quite special flowers.

In my travels, pink coreopsis or rosetickseed (C. rosea, Zones 4–7, 8–1) strikesme as a Jekyll-and-Hyde plant. I have ob-served lovely stands in northern Ohio andin parts of Canada, but elsewhere have

COREOPSIS BASICSMembers of the aster family (Asteraceae), tickseeds resemble many of the othercomposites that have daisylike, usually yellow, flowers. One distinguishing char-

acteristic is that they have two distinctcircles of bracts, or modified leaves,around each flower head; the outerbracts are generally green and the innerones are broader and often yellowish.

Generally drought tolerant, tickseedsgrow best in sunny sites with well-drained soil. The lower-growing ones fitin well at the front of a sunny border,while the taller varieties look best in amore naturalistic setting such as ameadow or cottage garden.

Perennial species, which spreadslowly via underground stems calledrhizomes, can be propagated by divi-sion in spring. Both annuals andperennials are fairly easy to grow fromseed sown at 70 degrees in late winterto early spring. —A.M.A.

seen way too many spotty plantings to getreally excited about it. But if you can growit, enjoy it. The plants are characterized bythin foliage and rose flowers with yellowcenters. They generally grow only abouteight to 10 inches tall and, at their best,form lovely colonies through a rhizoma-tous root system. At their worst, they sendup a few spindly stems and flowers, whichshould be ripped up and put out of theirmisery. Full sun and excellent drainage arenecessary. Consider placing them on asloping bank to enhance the drainage andprovide a better view of the flowers. Plantsdo far better in cooler climates and shouldbe avoided south of USDA Zone 6.

A selection called ‘Sweet Dreams’ seemsto have a good bit of C. rosea blood, but ismore heat tolerant and vigorous. We grewthese in our trial gardens for many yearsand they always stopped people in theirtracks. They grow 12 to 15 inches tall, butneed to be cut back hard in late spring orearly summer, especially in warm climates.Doing so stimulates growth of many thinstems that carry white daisy flowers with awonderfully contrasting red center.

THREADLEAF COREOPSISProbably the most forgiving and reveredtickseed is threadleaf coreopsis (C. verti-cillata, Zones 4–9, 9–1). Actually thespecies toiled in abject anonymity untilcultivars such as ‘Zagreb’ and ‘Moon-beam’ put better plants with interestingflower colors in front of gardeners. Thisspecies is the most heat tolerant of all thecommon coreopsis mainly because thewhorled leaves are so thin that they lose

very little moisture during the season.The bright yellow flowers are lovely andcontinue for many months. They stillbenefit from deadheading, but not to theextent of common tickseed. The follow-ing selections are all excellent choices.

‘Golden Gain’ is one of my favorites,forming two-foot-tall mounds coveredwith golden flowers most of the season.Nothing fancy, just good performance.

‘Golden Shower’ grows 18 to 24 inchestall and produces two-and-a-half-inch-di-ameter bright yellow flowers. It stands outeven in a crowded border.

Selected as Perennial of the Year in1992 by the Perennial Plant Association,‘Moonbeam’ was the most popular culti-var for years and performs well through-out the country. Plants grow 18 to 24inches tall and bear many soft-yellowflowers. These open continuously fromlate June to October, combining wellwith purple-foliaged plants.

The toughest and best performing cul-tivar is ‘Zagreb’, which has deeper yellowflowers than ‘Moonbeam’. The compact,upright plants grow only eight to 12 inch-es tall in the North but can reach 18 inch-es in southern gardens.

UNDERSUNG NATIVESAll tickseeds are native to North Ameri-ca, but only a half dozen or so are inmainstream gardening, which tells methat there is still a great deal of room forimprovement. Plant conservation, landreclamation, meadow gardening, andsimple love of native plants have resultedin some of our lesser-known natives be-coming more popular. Here are a fewspecies worth seeking out.

Chipola River coreopsis (C. integrifolia,Zones 6b–9, 9–6) is native to northwestFlorida, Georgia, and Alabama and pro-duces dark-eyed daisies in August and Sep-tember. They spread by rhizomes, but areT

not rapid colonizers. Plants are indigenousto moist areas, but do fine under normalgarden conditions.

Stiff coreopsis (C. palmata, Zones 4–8,8–1) is native to the American prairies andbears distinctively pale yellow ray flowerswith flat yellow centers in late spring to fall.The stiff and upright two- to three-footstems seldom need staking.

Tall coreopsis (C. tripteris, Zones 3–8,9–1) is one of my favorites even though itcan be quite a monster, reaching anywherefrom four to 10 feet tall. Plants are nativefrom southern Ontario to Wisconsin,south to Florida, Louisiana, and west toKansas. Both the leaves and the flowerheads have a faint smell of anise whencrushed. Plants flower in mid- to late sum-mer and are excellent for areas with poor,dry soils. It tends to reseed freely, however.‘Lighting Flash’, a new selection, growsfour to five feet tall with chartreuse leaves.My colleague Lomas, however, was disap-pointed because of this cultivar’s apparentlack of vigor in his garden on the shore ofLake Erie (USDA zone 5b/6). Yet he be-

lieves that with a little more vigor, theseplants could be extraordinary.

EVALUATING THE HYBRIDSIf anything in the horticulture industryhas changed in the last 10 years, it is themodernization of native plants, includ-ing tickseeds. Some people hate the ideathat our native plants have been used incommerce as parents for hybrids, butwithout a doubt, if it were not for selec-tion and breeding, many of our nativeplants would not be nearly as popular.

Some hybrids are spectacular, someare not, and the introductions have beencoming so fast and furious that little per-formance data have been collected—andin many cases parentage is uncertain.Here are a few that seem to have merit;

there are many more out there, and onmost of these, you take your chances, butwhat fun that is!

‘Autumn Blush’ (Zones 5–7b, 8–5) is be-coming more popular as more people tryit. In Athens’ harsh summer conditions,many of the low-growing forms tend tomelt out but we have had good successwith this hybrid. It grows about a foot talland at least as wide, and at its best is cov-ered with light yellow daisy flowers with acopper-colored center. I noticed that theflowers changed color over the season, butI was not nearly as impressed as Lomas,who says, “As the seasons change and dayslengthen, the flowers change from French-vanilla and subtle strawberry to a fullblown decadent strawberry-vanilla swirl.”Ah, the romance of youth!

likely includes C. verticillata ‘Moonbeam’and C. grandiflora in its parentage, and itsflowers are characterized by the lovelycolor of the former. Plants are about 18inches tall in our trial gardens. Despite thehardiness rating, we have had some trou-ble overwintering plants, although I admitour beds are not particularly well drained.I love the color but its vigor is still a littlesuspect in challenging climes. Lomas re-ports that plants reliably bloom from Junethrough October in his Ontario garden.

‘Full Moon’ (Zones 5–9, 9–5) reallycaught my eye this past season. The plantsgrew well, flowered for a long period, andshowed few signs of decline even in ourmiserable summer. Plants bear two-inch-wide, creamy yellow flowers on two-foot-tall plants. Lomas was even moreimpressed. He treated his young plants

badly, yet he says they not only survivedbut produced “some of the largest flowersI’ve ever seen on a tickseed. Large flowers,great vigor, great performer—what else isthere to ask for!” This selection arose fromthe breeding program of Darrell Probst ofGarden Vision Nursery and is the first ofhis “Big Bang” series.

‘Gold Nugget’ (Zones 6–8, 8–5) wasnew for 2008, so little information is avail-able. However, where I have seen it, I havebeen impressed with the gold flowers, each

with an obvious red eye. In locationswhere summer nights are cool, plantsshould remain in bloom for months.

‘Heaven’s Gate’ (Zones 5–8, 9–5) is an-other one of the many colorful dwarf cul-tivars that have arisen lately. This one hasthin stems topped with rose-pink flowers,each with a darker center. Plants growabout a foot tall and equally wide.

The Limerock series brings gardenerseither frustration or pleasure. When ‘Lime-rock Ruby’ (Zones 7–9, 9–6) was intro-duced, it was touted as being quite hardy.Beautiful it is, with ruby flowers and ashort, compact habit, but you are better offtreating it as an annual. However, ‘Lime-rock Passion’, with pink-lavender flowers,has proven to be more vigorous andhardier (probably to USDA Zone 5), par-ticularly in a site with excellent drainage.

‘Moonlight’ (Zones 6–8, 9–6) was alsonew in 2008, and produces soft yellowflowers on two-foot-tall mounding plants.

‘Pinwheel’ (Zones 5–8, 9–5), fromTerra Nova in Oregon, bears handsome,creamy yellow, fluted ray flowers withdarker centers. Plants are about two feettall. These look good so far.

‘Sienna Sunset’ (Zones 5–8, 9–5) is asport of ‘Créme Brûlée’ and shows the ob-vious parentage of threadleaf coreopsis. Ihave not yet trialed the plant, but theburnt sienna flowers are interesting.

‘Snowberry’ (Zones 6–9, 9–6) mayhave some C. auriculata in its parentage.Creamy white flowers with wine-red eyesbloom in late spring and summer. The fo-liage is a good dark green.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDERLike the dozens of flavors of ice cream,some coreopsis are better than others, but,to be sure, all taste good somewhere. I havelearned that a plant lover is simply theother side of a plant critic. What both sideshave to realize is that although gardeningis national, plant selection is local. Climate,soils, water, and other factors influenceplant performance, and regardless of theextensive travels of this writer, all edicts ofecstasy and mutterings of gloom have to betaken with a grain of salt. �

FOR MOST American gardeners,perennial vegetables bring tomind asparagus or rhubarb. Cali-

fornians might add globe artichokes tothe list. Yet there are many more speciesof perennial vegetables around the world,and well over one hundred can be grownin the United States. Some have beencultivated for millennia and are truly ex-cellent vegetables that are highly es-teemed in their homelands; others areproductive but obscure semi-domesti-cates or gourmet wild edibles.

Like asparagus, rhubarb, and arti-chokes, these crops can offer years of har-

vests from a single planting. They rangein form and size from trees to ground-covers and everything in between. Mostdo not require tillage, which fosters in-creased levels of humus and populationsof beneficial soil-building organisms.Their deep root systems, which help pre-vent erosion, also contribute to their re-sistance to pests, disease, and drought.Many can grow in niches of your gardenwhere no other vegetable will—includ-ing those dry, wet, and shady patches thatare a challenge to fill productively.

An interest in edible landscaping andlow-maintenance food gardening has led

me to spend much of the past decade in-vestigating perennial vegetables. Theyseem to have fallen between the cracks,perhaps because they do not fit into stan-dard categories in catalogs, books, and gar-dens. Some of these crops have beenstewarded by small nurseries and dedicat-ed plant collectors. A few are common or-namentals whose edibility has been largelyoverlooked. But most receive little or noattention from gardeners.

Yet the examples of asparagus, rhubarb,and artichokes illustrate what perennialvegetables offer us. More and more gar-deners are incorporating resilient and

long-lived edible perennials in their land-scapes. And although they will never re-place tomatoes or carrots, these crops canprovide a reliable and nutritious supple-ment to annual vegetables and fill in earlyand late-season harvests to complementmore familiar foods.

HERBACEOUS PERENNIAL VEGETABLESHerbaceous perennial vegetables requiredifferent management than annual veg-etables. They should be placed out of thetiller’s way and given a rich soil and plen-ty of mulch. Although it may take a fewseasons, once established they can be har-vested for years. Make sure to completelyremove perennial weeds such as quack-grass (Elymus repens) and field bindweed(Convolvulus arvensis) as you prepare yoursite, because weed control options are lim-ited once your crops are planted. Practic-ing good garden sanitation—thorough fallcleanup and removal of diseased plantparts—is essential, because you may notget the chance to practice crop rotation fora decade or more!

Sea kale (Crambe maritima, USDAHardiness Zones 6–9, AHS Heat Zones9–6) is a hardy perennial member of themustard family (Brassicaceae) grownthroughout much of North America as anornamental. Its cream-col-ored flowers are indeedbeautiful and smell likehoney. But at the turn ofthe 19th century, sea kalewas a very popular veg-etable; its blanched shoots,which have a sweet, nutty,cabbage flavor, were readi-ly found in the finest mar-kets and restaurants. I findthe flower buds, which are similar to broc-coli, delicious and I enjoy the collardlikeleaves in fall. Sea kale thrives in full sun andfertile, well-drained soil.

Gardeners throughout the countrygrow cannas for their outstanding orna-mental leaves and flowers. Achira (Cannaindica, syn. C. edulis, Zones 8–11, 12–1),however, is a species grown for its edibletubers, which are large, starchy, and verysweet when baked. (Tubers of ordinarycannas are also edible, although some va-rieties are rather fibrous.) Achira is an im-portant crop in Australia, where the plantis called Queensland arrowroot. Its shoots

can be eaten like asparagus. This cropgrows in sun or part shade and tolerateswet and poor soils, although it prefers arich garden soil. Achira grows in the samerange as most other cannas. In colder re-gions, it can be grown as a tender peren-nial; tubers should be dug and storedindoors over winter in a dark, cool place.In short-season climates, it may take twogrowing seasons to obtain full-sized roots.

Some perennial vegetables are popularwild edibles that are only beginning theirjourney toward domestication. An exam-

ple is ramp (Allium tricoccum, Zones 4–8,8–1), a native woodland onion. Ramp fes-tivals are held every spring in Appalachiato celebrate the plant’s sweet greens andpungent garlic-flavored bulbs. Ramps,sometimes called wild leeks, are ephemer-al bulbs; their leaves appear briefly in thespring in moist deciduous eastern forests,disappearing by the time the tree canopyprovides full shade. Only a small flower re-veals the bulb’s location in late summer.Overharvesting is taking a toll on somewild ramp populations, but the species iswell suited to cultivation in much of theEast and Midwest. Although ramps can be

planted almost any time, fall planting ofdormant bulbs is recommended. Theythrive in a humus-rich soil and at least partshade, and benefit from spring moisture.

AQUATIC OPTIONSA water garden can be an elegant addi-tion to your yard, attracting wildlife andcreating a sense of serenity. Althoughwidely appreciated for their ornamentalqualities, many popular water gardenplants are actually cultivated as vegetablesin their native lands. Edible water gardenplants are generally best grown in sub-merged pots with plenty of fertilizer.Avoid planting non-native aquatic plantsin natural bodies of water because theyare prone to naturalize aggressively. Arti-ficial ponds are surprisingly easy to cre-ate—and you can grow many species ofproductive aquatic vegetables in a simpleplastic kiddie pool.

With its outstanding blooms, sacredlotus (Nelumbo nucifera, Zones 4–11,12–3) is a central feature in many watergardens, but it has been grown for cen-turies for its edible roots—technically tu-bers—which are considered a delicacy inAsian cuisine. The mild-flavored rootsremain firm after cooking, and, whensliced, reveal an interesting honeycombpattern of air tubes.

Native to Australia and eastern Asia,sacred lotus is surprisingly hardy and willspread aggressively if uncontained. It sur-vives in cold regions as long as it is plant-ed deeply enough that the mud aroundits roots does not freeze. If you are con-cerned about freezing, lift potted plantsand store them indoors in a cool, darkplace until spring. In short-season re-gions, plants need two summers to pro-duce full-size roots. Plant in full sun forbest flowering and root production.

One aquatic perennial that has be-come a staple in my garden in the last fewyears is water celery (Oenanthe javanica,Zones 9–11, 12–1). Its mild parsley- or cel-ery-flavored foliage is used like celery, towhich it is related. Cultivated from Koreato Hawaii, many sources rate it as a trop-ical, although it apparently overwintersquite far north. In my own Massachu-setts garden, water celery often sprouts

up under the snow, offering a welcomesnack during midwinter thaws.

Water celery grows much like water-cress—it is best grown in water in a potfor upright foliage, but it will also sendfloating runners across the surface of thewater. This versatile species grows onland as well; it even thrives in part shadeas a delightful groundcover. But bewarned—it can spread great distances ina single season, on land or in water.Planting it within a rhizome barrier ormowed pathway helps keep it under con-

trol. ‘Flamingo’ is a variegated varietywith purple foliage.

Other aquatic perennial vegetables in-clude watercress (Nasturtium officinale),arrowhead (Sagittaria spp.), and taro(Colocasia esculenta).

LONG-LIVED VINESClimbing annual members of the beanfamily (Fabaceae), such as peas and polebeans, and sprawling cucurbit (Cucur-bitaceae) vines, including squashes, mel-ons, and cucumbers, are well known tovegetable gardeners.

Several members of these families arelarger, more vigorous, and much longer-lived. Accordingly, the supports on whichthey grow must be more robust—the peafence built to last one season will quicklysuccumb beneath the weight of theseperennial vines. But they can be grown onsturdy fences, pergolas, or covered walk-ways, and often make beautiful additionsto a landscape. All they need is full sunand a rich, well-drained soil.

Gardeners in warm regions can growthe ‘Seven Year’ variety of lima bean(Phaseolus lunatus, Zones 9–10, 10–9).This variety originated in arid regions ofAfrica, where it is grown over houses toprovide shade as well as food. Many climb-ing lima bean varieties are perennial inwarm regions, but all bush types are annu-al. Climbing varieties of runner beans(Phaseolus coccineus, Zones 10–11, 12–10)are also perennial in mild climates; somelive up to 20 years in parts of the UnitedKingdom. Of course, lima and runner

beans can be grown as annuals throughoutmost of the country.

Chayote (Sechium edule, Zones 9–10,12–9) is a wonderful vegetable from Mex-ico and Central America that has yet tofully catch on in American cuisine. Thevines yield pear-sized fruits that range incolor from white to dark green; somehave spines. Some varieties are reminis-cent of crisp summer squash, others aresimilar to potatoes when cooked. If careis taken to avoid damaging the plant, thesweet tubers can also be harvested. This

productive and reliable perennial veg-etable can be grown in warm, long-sea-son regions of the United States.

Perennial vegetable vines for cooler re-gions include groundnut (Apios ameri-cana), which features edible tubers, andCaucasian spinach (Hablitzia tamnoides),a Scandinavian leaf crop, although seedsources are limited. (For additional peren-nial vegetables, see the chart above.)

TASTY TREES AND SHRUBSGardeners in warm climates can cultivatesome truly world-class vegetables that lit-erally grow on trees. The tree and shrubvegetables profiled here have been culti-vated for centuries. While many of themare tropical, their range can be extendedsignificantly if they are grown as perenni-als that die back to the ground in winter.As long as the roots do not freeze, stemswill re-sprout in spring.

Moringa, or horseradish tree (Moringaoleifera, Zones 10–11, 12–9) is a remarkabletree vegetable native to tropical Asia. Infrost-free areas it produces edible pods thatare eaten much like green beans. Thesebeans have been an important cultivatedvegetable in India for centuries, and manynamed varieties have been developed. A

relative, M. stenopetala (Zones 10–11,12–9), is native to eastern Africa.

Moringa can be grown over a muchbroader range, however, as a resproutingperennial for the production of leaves,which are exceptionally nutritious.Pound for pound, they contain seventimes the vitamin C of oranges, fourtimes the calcium and twice the proteinof milk, four times the vitamin A of car-

rots, and three times the potassium ofbananas. The leaves can be cooked likespinach or dried and added to soups.Not surprisingly, the tree is becoming animportant crop in the developing world,including very arid areas.

Even if you live in colder climatesyou can grow moringa as an annual—inmy Massachusetts garden, it has reachedsix feet tall in a single season. In warmregions, moringa plants can send upmultiple shoots 15 feet high following afrost. Moringa will grow in any sunnysite with well-drained soil, but is moreproductive with plenty of nitrogen andorganic matter.

Nopale cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica,Zones 8–10, 12–7) is a prickly pear cactuswith edible pads and fruit. The pads are avery popular vegetable in Mexico and theAmerican Southwest, with a flavor andtexture between green beans and okra. Asa bonus, this vegetable has been shown tolower LDL cholesterol. But make sure toremove the tiny hairlike spines that growon the glochids—pea-sized bumps—onthe pads. Spines can be removed with avegetable peeler or knife, or by scrubbingwith leather gloves.

Nopales can grow to 18 feet, but theyare usually cut back to increase pad pro-duction. The fruit, known as tunas inMexico and sabras in Israel, is commer-cially produced. Nopales require full sunand well-drained soil.

Tree collard (Brassica oleracea, Zones8–10, 10–7) is a long-lived shrub kale formild-winter regions that produces sweet,ornamental blue and purple leaves. Shrubkales may have been the first brassicas tobe domesticated, although they are rare incultivation today. Within their range, theyare easy to grow as long as you provide fullsun and fertile, well-drained soil.

Cold climate gardeners can growtree vegetables too—notably the tenderyoung leaves of linden (Tilia spp.), alsocalled lime tree, and the spring foliage

of Chinese toon (Toona sinensis), whichhas a roasted-garlic flavor.

Tree vegetables are typically cut backannually, or even more frequently, to cre-ate flushes of tender growth and keepleaves in easy reach for harvest. Formoringa, linden, nopale, and Chinesetoon, you can either cut them back tomajor branches at a typical height ofthree to six feet, or cut them back to a fewinches above the ground.

PART OF A NUTRITIOUS LANDSCAPEWhen matched with low-maintenancefruits and nuts like persimmons, chestnuts,and kiwifruit, perennial vegetables makeexciting edible landscapes possible. Youcan easily incorporate a few of these cropsin perennial beds, at the edges of your an-nual vegetable garden, or beneath fruittrees. Some can be encouraged to natural-ize in a far corner of your garden. Andperennial vegetables, like other perennials,build healthy soil, prevent erosion, and cre-ate habitats for wildlife.

A vibrant, managed ecosystem of use-ful perennial plants could be a pathway toa new relationship with nature, an ap-proach that provides a long-term localfood source while having a positive influ-ence on the environment. �

Mary Yee: JSS is one of the few American seedcompanies that is still independently owned. Doesthis offer an advantage in running the business? Rob Johnston Jr.: As an employee-owned compa-ny, Johnny’s is beholden only to our customers, andI think we’re stronger this way than if we were part ofa big corporation. We’ve grown the business entirelythrough the good graces of our customers, with noequity investment. From what I’ve observed, serviceto the customer generally diminishes with corporateconsolidation—perhaps because of the diminishedenthusiasm of the people involved.

What changes have you seen in vegetable gar-dening over the years?During the 1970s, there was a back-to-the-earthmovement and a vocational appeal to growing foodat home, driven by the feeling that “maybe I’m goingto have to know how to do this some day.” But the

VEGETABLE GARDENING is on an upswing among American home gardeners, and for Rob John-

ston Jr., it’s good news. For more than 35 years, the founder of Johnny’s Selected Seeds (JSS), located in

Winslow, Maine, has been quietly espousing the merits of organic vegetable gardening and building an award-

winning company. Small commercial growers are JSS’s primary customers, but home

gardeners also look to JSS for a variety of vegetable seeds, many of them organic and

heirloom, some bred by Johnston himself. Last year, amid rising gasoline prices and the

weakening U.S. economy, JSS experienced a dramatic surge in its home gardening base,

a phenomenon also noted by many other seed companies. Gardening for food, which

had long taken a backseat to ornamental gardening, is suddenly in fashion again. “We

didn’t see it coming,” Johnston admits. “It was a huge surprise.”

Johnston has seen many changes in the seed business. In 1973, when he founded JSS

after dropping out of college to pursue farming, “organic” was far from mainstream. JSS was one of the few

American sources for then-hard-to-find Asian produce (Johnston had to get seeds from Japan). Once oper-

ating from a farmhouse attic, JSS is now an employee-owned company with a staff of 100, a seed production

facility, and a 100-acre organic trial and research farm, but its mission—with a nod to Johnny Appleseed, the

inspiration for the company’s name—remains simple: “Helping family, friends, and communities to feed

one another by providing superior seeds, tools, information, and service.”

Managing Editor and Art Director Mary Yee talked with Johnston before the start of the 2009 growing

season to get his insights on the renewed interest in vegetable gardening, the potential impact of biotech-

nology on home gardening, and some of his new projects in breeding vegetables.

1980s saw a back-to-the-office movement,so interest in home vegetable gardeningwent into a decline for about 25 years.

Last year, there was a big increase inhome vegetable gardening in the U.S.,Canada, and the U.K., which we thinkwill continue in 2009. Along with an in-crease in garden size and number of gar-dens, we’ve also noted more gardenersgrowing high-caloric crops such as pota-toes, winter squash, corn, and carrots—not just salad greens as in previous years.

What types of people are ordering veg-etable seeds from JSS?Many are gardeners who grew vegetablesin the past and are coming back to it tosave money, but there are also a lot of new-comers who are more interested in a betterquality of life—eating the freshest foodand knowing where it comes from. Andwith rising gasoline prices, many peopleare realizing that gardening is somethingfun and productive that they can do with-out driving someplace.

Most catalogs focus on selling prod-ucts, but the JSS catalog contains somuch information that it’s almost agrowing handbook. It must be time-consuming and expensive to produceeach year. Why do you do it?A great seed is only a concentrated bit ofpotential. We go to the trouble to supplygood seeds, so we want to give gardenersthe most detailed information—ideal sow-ing temperature, pests to watch for, andhow to tell optimum maturity for harvest-ing—to give them the best chance to getoptimal results.

JSS is among a list of seed suppliers whoparticipate in the Safe Seed Initiative(SSI). Could you tell us what that is?The SSI is a joint project of concernedseed growers, farmers, and scientists. As aparticipant in the SSI, Johnny’s pledges tonot knowingly buy or sell genetically mod-ified (GMO) seeds or plants.

In the 1999 catalog, I wrote that whileJohnny’s didn’t carry any GMOs, wewere “open minded about this new tech-nology,” and that we would consider thenew biotech seed varieties one at a time.I didn’t think it was a provocative state-ment, but we received dozens of lettersfrom people who were against GMOs

and found our open-mindedness so un-acceptable that some of them organizeda boycott. Our signing of the SSI pledgehelped to reassure people that JSS wasnot abandoning its core values.

Does biotechnology have a legitimateplace in horticulture?I remain intrigued with the possibilities,but there haven’t been any engineered traitsin vegetable crops that aren’t possible withconventional plant breeding techniques.

Other than a few summer squash andsweet corn varieties, there aren’t any GMOvegetables on the market. Some compa-

nies have developed varieties with GMOtraits, such as herbicide-resistant lettuce,but they have yet to be marketed. TheAmerican public seems to accept GMOcrops when the plant is invisible, such assyrup from engineered corn in a packagedfood product, but it is not yet willing tobuy a head of GMO lettuce for a salad.

One aspect of the business of geneticengineering that I’m against is its con-centration in large corporations, whichcould put the control of the plants we eatinto the hands of a very few.

You’ve been interested in plant breedingfrom the beginning and have developedmany varieties for JSS. Of those, do youhave some favorites?It’s hard for me to settle on my favorites,

but ‘Lipstick’ pepper comes to mind. Itwas one of my first sweet peppers in themid-1980s. It’s still as popular as ever. Iselected this small, cone-shaped, verysweet-flavored pepper from a cross be-tween two early bell peppers.

I also like ‘Diva’ cucumber, which wona 2002 All-America Selections award. It’sa delicious, seedless, non-hybrid cucum-ber bred by my wife, Janika Eckert. Whenyou taste it, you realize that simple plea-sures can make the world a better place.

What goes into breeding a new variety? It typically takes eight to 10 plant genera-tions of breeding work to finish a new va-riety, and only one or two percent arenamed and marketed. It can be nerve-wracking throwing out new plants, butbreeding is both an art and a science. Agood plant breeder makes the right choic-es in keeping the few winners.

So what do you consider when you’reevaluating potential new varieties?A typical Johnny’s customer is a mixedmarket gardener with between five and 50acres or an avid home gardener. Most aren’tin an ideal location to grow anything, sowe focus on wide adaptability—anotherway to say “easy to grow in diverse condi-tions”—and flavor.

Could you tell us about some of yourcurrent breeding projects? We’re working on lettuce that adapts tohot, humid summer weather, and early-maturing pumpkins with resistance to fo-liar diseases, especially powdery mildew.We’re also looking at peppers for early ma-turity, tolerance to cool nights, and resis-tance to fruit rot and tomatoes withresistance to foliar diseases such as earlyblight, septoria leaf spot, and late blight.

What’s been the most gratifying partof growing JSS the last 35 years?Talking with a customer and learning thatJohnny’s has been important in the successof his or her farm or home garden. �

ping each leaf in melted butter and tug-ging the stem end through my teeth todraw off the tender meat seemed likechild’s play.

Years later I discovered the rewards ofthis vegetable go beyond its culinary ap-peal. Ornamentally, it makes a bold state-ment in the garden, with deeply serratedleaves spreading into a silvery green foun-tain to five feet tall and six feet across. Butit’s the flower bud that is harvested forconsumption. Shaped like a pineconewith tough, prickly outer leaves—techni-cally bracts—it contains layers of tasty,creamy-textured interior leaves and asweet, oh so tender heart.

Although artichokes thrive where

summers are cool and moist and wintersare mild (USDA Hardiness Zones 8–9,AHS Heat Zones 9–7), with the propervariety selection and a little planning,backyard gardeners in most regions cansuccessfully grow this gourmet crop.

GROWING GUIDELINESIn USDA Zones 8 and 9, artichokes aregrown as perennials, producing crops forabout five years. They often survive in cool-er climates when grown in well-drained soiland provided extra winter protection.

In cold-winter climates that have atleast 90 frost-free days, artichokes are bestgrown as annuals. Plants require vernaliza-tion—exposure to a cold period—to in-duce flowering. This is achieved naturallyfor plants that winter outdoors, but if youare growing artichokes as an annual, placeyoung seedlings with two or three leavesoutdoors in a protected spot, such as a coldframe, for two to six weeks while temper-atures are between 34 and 50 degrees

Fahrenheit. Or to make it easy on yourself,buy seedlings from a garden center.

Artichokes grow best in full sun—af-ternoon shade where summers are hot—and slightly acidic soil rich in organicmatter. They are heavy feeders, so priorto planting, work a shovelful of rich com-post, aged manure, or a half cup of com-plete organic fertilizer into each hole.Follow up with a mid-season applicationof compost or aged manure.

After years of growing artichokes, Ilearned moisture is key—plants need lotsof water to produce big, succulent buds.Just be sure the soil drains well, especiallyin winter—poor drainage can cause theplant to rot at the crown.

Soil temperature is another vital partof bud development; a hot, dry spell canreduce the quality of the bud. Mulchingwith a two- to four-inch layer of straw,shredded leaves, or other organic matterhelps moderate soil temperature andconserves moisture.

To overwinter artichokes that aregrown as perennials, cut plants back tofour to six inches above ground in fall orbefore a hard frost, then generouslymulch with compost or straw.

PEST AND DISEASE PREVENTIONBesides crown rot, artichokes are rarelytroubled by disease. Botrytis blight candevelop on leaves and actively growingbuds; left unchecked, it can progress intothe main stem. An organic fungicide suchas neem oil will help remedy the situation.To minimize occurrence of the disease,avoid planting in heavy wet soil and space

plants so they have good air circulation. Snails and slugs are a problem in some

areas. Natural solutions include non-toxic slug baits such as Slug Stop or Slug-go, and barriers, such as Safer’s Snail &Slug Copper Barrier Tape. Aphids can becontrolled with a few applications of in-secticidal soap or strong jets of water.

Inmy Oregon (Zone 7) garden, winter-pro-tected perennial plants produce two cropsa year: a generous crop in spring, and asecond crop in midsummer to fall. Afterthe spring harvest, I cut plants back to sixto eight inches above the ground for anearlier and more productive second crop.

To harvest, select plump, tight buds,cutting the stem two inches below thebud’s base. Cut off the top inch and trimthe sharp tips of the remaining outerleaves. Steam or boil for 25 to 35 minutes oruntil tender. To eat, dip each leaf base inmelted butter, mayonnaise, or yogurt, andscrape off the flesh with your teeth. Onceyou get to the center, remove the fuzzychoke to reveal the ultimate delicacy—thetender and tasty heart! �

BEES HAVE ROLE AS PLANT BODYGUARDSWhile most people steer clear of busyhoney bees, it seems some garden pestsrespond to the warning buzz, too. Astudy published in the December 23,2008 issue of Current Biology reports thathoney bees protect the plants they polli-nate by simply buzzing about.

Researchers from the University ofWürzburg in Germany discovered thatwhen honey bees were present, beet army-worm caterpillars fed 60 to 70 percent less

on bell pepper plants than when the honeybees were absent. Using tiny hairs on theirbodies, the caterpillars sensed the vibra-tions of approaching bees. Once alerted,the caterpillars temporarily stopped feed-ing, some even dropping from the plant—significantly reducing plant damage.

This research suggests that caterpillarscannot distinguish between the buzz ofparasitic wasps and honey bees. Severaltypes of parasitic wasps attack caterpillarsby laying their eggs on them. When thelarvae emerge, they parasitize and eat thecaterpillars, so there is good reason for thecaterpillars to avoid buzzing insects.

Researchers now plan to see if inter-planting agricultural crops with flowers fa-vored by honey bees may lead to higheryields and new biological pest controls.Since honey bees pollinate about 130 agri-cultural crops in the United States, this isgood news for farmers and may offer morefood sources and reduced pesticide expo-sure for declining honey bee numbers.

TEMPERATE TREES AT RISKThe reduction of rainforests in the tropicshas long been a cause for concern, espe-cially since the trees help to mitigate theplanet’s rising carbon dioxide levels thatare causing climate change. According toa study published in the January 23, 2009issue of the journal Science, threats to treesin temperate regions are just as worrying.Researchers have found that old growthforests in western regions of North Amer-ica are suffering widespread die-offs,which could have significant ecologicaland environmental ramifications.

Led by the U.S. Geological Survey, col-laborators from several western universitiesstudied 76 sites in Oregon, Washington,California, Arizona, Colorado, New Mex-ico, and southwestern British Columbia.They discovered that the trees are dying offat a faster rate than they are being replacedby new trees. Because this trend is occur-ring regardless of other factors such as treeage, species, or elevation, the researchersblame rising temperatures throughout theregion. The resulting increase in droughtshas stressed trees, making them more sus-ceptible to pests and diseases.

The study warns that this trend couldaffect wildlife that rely on the trees andthere is definitely an increased risk of wild-fires. But perhaps most worrying, stressedforests like these give off more carbondioxide than they absorb, exacerbating cli-mate change. “Forest fires or major insectepidemics that kill a lot of trees all at oncetend to get most of the headlines,” saysMark Harmon, professor of forest ecolo-gy at Oregon State University and one ofthe study’s co-authors. “What we’re study-ing here are changes that are much slowerand difficult to identify, but in the longrun extremely important.”

Northwest and San Francisco Flower and Garden Shows Face ClosureIn a year that has seen the cancellation of the long-running New England FlowerShow by the Massachusetts Horticultural Society and the postponement ofCleveland Botanical Garden’s May flower show until next year, gardeners areanxiously awaiting a decision on the fate of two of the largest and most popu-lar flower shows in the country—the Northwest Flower and Garden Show heldin Seattle, Washington, and the San Francisco Flower and Garden Show in Cal-ifornia. Cur-rently professor of botany at Washington University in St.Louis and of biology at St. Louis University, Raven is alsopresident of the Missouri Botanical Garden, where he hasplayed a key role in its development for 40 years. Construction Accident at Atlanta Botanical GardenTragedy struck the Atlanta Botanical Garden when, in mid-December 2008, partof the new Canopy Walk under construction collapsed, injuring 18 and killing oneof the workers who had been building it. Thanks to the swiftness and capabilityof the emergency response team, all of the injured victims were brought to thehospital in time for critical care. When the garden reopened three days later, ad-missions proceeds and donations were allocated to a fund set up to help the work-ers and their families. Mary Pat Matheson, executive director of the AtlantaBotanical Garden, has announced that the garden is still committed to buildingthe Canopy Walk and the rest of its expansion, to be completed by 2010, despitethe construction accident. In the interim, Matheson expressed her hope that thegarden will continue to provide a place of healing and solace for the constructionworkers, their families, and the community at large.

WITH SO MANY new plants coming on to the market eachyear, it can be a challenge to know exactly how they will

perform in your garden or region. One useful but often over-looked resource for finding out about great new varieties is uni-versity trial gardens. “Trialgardens answer the ques-tion, ‘How do we make theplant buying experiencebetter? By having betterplants,’” says Allan Ar-mitage, the director of theUniversity of Georgia(UGA) trial gardens inAthens. Norm Lownds, thedirector at Michigan StateUniversity’s (MSU) trialgardens, agrees, pointingout that they “are a way tomake sure that the moneyyou spend on plants will bewell spent.” They also“showcase the beauty andnew varieties of the plantsthat are available,” saysJames Klett, director of theColorado State University(CSU) trial gardens.

Each year, plant development companies give seeds or veg-etative samples to specific universities for testing. Students, Mas-ter Gardeners, and university staff help gather and analyze data,ranging from bloom time to cultural requirements. At the endof the year, outstanding varieties are given special recognition.For example, UGA has the Athens Select program, CSU has theBest of the Trials program, and MSU has the Spartan Selectsprogram, all of which help to promote top-performing plantsto consumers and the horticulture industry.

However, university trial gardens serve as more than just clear-ing houses for new plants. These gardens provide a resource forhorticulture students and the plant industry. For students, thegardens are outdoor classrooms for learning identification andgarden management practices. For plant breeders, growers, andmarketers, the gardens serve as a testing area for new plants invarious environments. Evaluations from trial gardens help guidefuture breeding programs and marketing campaigns.

Many trial gardens are open to the public, and offer openhouse events for both home gardeners and professionals. Forexample, Armitage leads tours during annual open houses atthe University of Georgia’s gardens, scheduled for July this year.According to Armitage, these open house events offer visitors

the opportunity to ask questions and rate the plants in the gar-dens, which include more than 600 taxa of bedding plants, aswell as tropicals, vines, specialty annuals, and perennials.

At MSU in East Lansing, visitors can participate in two setsof annual open houses.The first set, a “spring intogardening” day on March14 and a “garden day” onAugust 7 are open to thepublic. For green industryprofessionals, MSU alsohosts the Garden PlantShowcase on the firstWednesday in August,which Lownds says is a“great opportunity to seenew introductions and getunbiased evaluations.” Asan official All-America Se-lections (AAS) trial gardensite, MSU evaluates about1,000 annual cultivarsthroughout its Horticul-ture Demonstration Gar-dens, which span nearly 14acres. AAS is an organiza-tion that collects trial data

from gardens across the country to determine which plants aretop performers on a national level.

Colorado State University’s trial gardens—comprising ap-proximately 1,000 cultivars of annuals, a cool-season pansy croptrial, and a two-year perennial trial—also offers annual openhouse events in summer. “The gardens bring together profes-sional horticulturists, growers, seed companies, and vegetativepropagators to observe how new and proven varieties performin our sunny, dry climate,” says Klett.

Even if you are not able to visit in person, many universitytrial gardens offer plenty of helpful information—such as topperformers, regional ratings, and photos of trialed plants—ontheir websites. As you plan yourgarden this spring, be sure to tap into the resources your univer-sity trial gardens offer so you can zero in on the plants withproven performance in your region. �

US NATIONAL ARBORETUM INTRODUCES NEW EGOLF VIBURNUM After 20 years of research and evaluation, the United States National Arboretum has released the newest Viburnum culti­var from its shrub breeding program. De­veloped from a 1988 cross of v: 'Eskimo' and V. macrocephalum forma keteleeri, 'Nantucket' is the 20th viburnum culti­var released by the arboretum's Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit. Each of these introductions was developed by the late Don Egolf, who bred woody plants at the arboretum for 30 years.

'Nantucket' is a semi-evergreen shrub that grows to 12 feet tall and half as wide with narrow, dark green leaves. Lightly fra­grant, white flowers neatly adorn the shrub in May. It is recommended for use as a hedge, mass planting, shrub border,

and it even performs well as a container plant. Currently, it is in wholesale pro­duction and it should be readily available at garden centers in two years. It is rated for USDA Hardiness Zones 6 to 8, AHS Heat Zones 9 to 6.

ECONOMY SPELLS BAD NEWS FOR GARDEN MAGAZINES In the last few months, publishers of gar­den and shelter magazines have felt the pinch of the economic downturn. Lagging

advertising sales have caused several pub­lishers to cease production of various titles in an effort to cut their losses.

Time Inc., the publisher of magazines such as Time and Southern Living, ended the four-year run of Cottage Living with the November/December 2008 issue. It will also close www.cottageliving.com. The January/February 2009 issue is the final one for Growing Edge, a trade mag­azine about hydroponics, after nearly 20 years of production. T he publisher, Tom Alexander, plans to continue selling back issues online and will expand www. growingedge.com beyond hydroponics in­formation. And in January, Meredith Corporation, which publishes Better Homes & Gardens and numerous other titles, announced it would lay off 250 people, about seven percent of its work­force. Additionally, it will cease pub­lishing Country Home with its March 2009 issue.

shrinks when it dries, its pH, its lack ofweed seeds, insects, and disease, and howwell it holds up over time are further fac-tors influenced by the specific make upof the mix. Although some potting mixescontain soil, many do not. If soil is partof the potting mix, it should be pasteur-ized (see “Pasteurizing Soil,” page 53).

Another point for environmentallyconscious gardeners to consider is this:How sustainable are the practices in-volved in producing and distributingyour potting soil?

ORGANIC COMPONENTSOrganic ingredients such as peat moss, co-conut coir, compost, and tree bark makeup a significant portion of most pottingmixes. Peat is the lightweight remains ofcertain plants—most commonly sphag-num moss—that have been preserved in ahigh acid environment such as bogs. Peatmoss retains a lot of water and is extreme-ly stable—it decomposes very slowly. It isalso acidic and has no nutrient value. Al-though relatively inexpensive to harvestand package, there are concerns about itsenvironmental sustainability (see “The Is-sue of Peat Moss,”page 51).

In recent years, several renewable al-ternatives to peat moss have emerged onthe market. A processed by-product ofthe dairy industry called RePeet™ is pro-duced by Organix, Inc., in anaerobic di-gesters at regional facilities located nearlarge dairy operations. Sold as a soilamendment, its primary component isdairy cow manure. When processed, itshares many traits with peat moss, in-cluding water retentiveness and porosity.

With a pH of 6.5, it is closer to neutralthan peat moss, which has a pH around4.0. “We are just now moving to our firstfull-scale production facility nearStephenville, Texas,” says Organix Presi-dent Russell V. Davis. “RePeet cannot be

found in any off-the-shelf potting mixesas of now, but should start showing up instores later this year.”

Coir is the pith that surrounds a co-conut; it is fibrous, lightweight, resistantto decay, and it adds significant porosityto a potting mix. “Coir is much easier toremoisten than peat, and not nearly asacidic. It does not last in a container for-ever, but I would guess about three timeslonger than peat moss,” says Brooklyn-based garden writer and photographerKen Druse.

A natural by-product of processing co-conuts, coir is renewable and would seemto be ideal for a potting mix except that,unless you live where coconuts grow, thematerial has to be shipped, often long dis-tances. Many manufacturers, however, feelthat coir is still a better choice, environ-mentally, than peat.

Gardens Alive’s Natural BeginningsSeed Starting Mix is one coir-based mixenhanced with worm castings and meal-worm guano as nutrient sources. It’s greatfor starting seeds where maintaining bal-anced moisture is critical.

Compost is frequently included inpotting mixes, and local sources are avail-able no matter where you live. It is amajor component of the Organic Me-chanics mixes. “We use locally madecompost to replace peat,” says MarkHighland, president of the Organic Me-chanics Soil Company, which distributesits peat-free products to the Mid-Atlanticregion. “To further reduce the energyconsumed in the manufacturing process,we’ve begun replacing perlite with ricehulls in some of our blends.”

Potting Soil and Mixes: Properties and Priorities

AGROWING MEDIUM that provides a healthy environment for roots is essential for successful con-

tainer gardening, and for propagating many plants from seed or cuttings. Good drainage and ade-

quate water-holding capacity are important characteristics to consider. Weight is another; your medium

should have enough weight to support the plant without its toppling over, but should not be too heavy

if you plan to lug the container from place to place. How easily the medium accepts water, how much it

THE ISSUE OF PEAT MOSSAbout 90 percent of the peat used in this country is harvested from bogs in Canada.According to the Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA), of the 279 mil-lion acres of Canadian peatland, less than .02 percent (42,000 acres) is being usedfor harvesting approximately 1.4 million tons of sphagnum peat each year. Accordingto CSPMA President Paul Short, this amount “is well within the sustainable allocationlimits of natural resource availability.” Furthermore, CSPMA has adopted a preserva-tion and reclamation policy to help restore bogs to a functional wetland ecosystem.

Yet many still question the sustainability of peat moss harvesting. The harvest-ing process involves draining the bogs by digging a network of ditches and basins.This may have long term effects on local water tables.

Although the Canadian bogs are extensive, and peat moss often starts to re-growwithin five years after it is harvested, it grows at an extremely slow rate, about onemillimeter per year. And according to the North American Wetlands ConservationCouncil, it may simply be impractical to return some harvested bogs to peatlands.In these cases, they recommend converting the area to farmland, wetland, or plant-ing trees. The result is a significant disruption of a highly specialized ecosystemand endangerment of the many organisms that inhabit it. —R.P.

range shipping by maintaining multiplemanufacturing facilities that serve spe-cific regions. For example, Monroviaproduces potting soils at eight differentfacilities in the United States.

Fafard has three U.S. production fa-cilities, in South Carolina, Florida, andTexas, and three more in Canada. “Fa-fard’s premium retail potting soils aresold only in independent garden centers.Because of our plant locations, retailers

that carry Fafard soil tend to be up anddown the East Coast,” says Ann Bryan,Fafard’s marketing services manager.Bark is included in many of Fafard’s U.S.mixes. “All bark is southern yellow pineand comes from vendors within a 100-mile radius of our plants,” says Bryan.

INORGANIC INGREDIENTSInorganic components commonly in-cluded in potting soils are sand, perlite,and vermiculite. Coarse sand, also calledbuilder’s sand, adds both porosity andweight to a mix. For top heavy plants itsweight provides stability.

Perlite is a volcanic rock and vermi-culite is a micaceous mineral. Both aremined materials that are heated untilthey expand, adding significant porosityto a mix. Much of the perlite and vermi-culite used in potting soil is imported.For example, although Fafard obtains itsperlite from several southeastern suppli-ers, it is originally mined in Greece.

Vermiculite is mined in many loca-tions, including a few sites in NorthAmerica. In the 1980s, asbestos, a mater-ial that has proven carcinogenic if the

fibers are inhaled, was found in vermi-culite mined in Libby, Montana; themine was closed in 1990. According tothe National Sustainable Agricultural In-formation Service, all sources of naturalvermiculite apparently contain some as-bestos, although levels may be very low.

No safety labeling is required on ver-miculite products, however, the U.S. En-vironmental Protection Agency suggeststhat if vermiculite is used, it should be han-dled outdoors or in a well-ventilated areaand moistened to reduce the potential re-lease of asbestos fibers. When vermiculiteis included in a moist growing mix, thelikelihood of problems is lessened.

PRE-MIXED OR HOMEMADE?For occasional use, it’s probably easiest topurchase a good commercial mix. There aremany available, but because little label in-formation is required, you take yourchances with an unknown brand. Ask forrecommendations at local garden centers orfrom neighbors who have container gar-

dens. Finding a good local—or at least re-gional—source of high-quality potting soilwill go a long way to help your containerplants thrive and minimize the energy usedin its distribution.

Premixed potting soils often containfertilizer. While this may be desirable foroutdoor container plants that are in activegrowth, it may not be appropriate formany houseplants and seedlings. “In myexperience, the fertilizers are released tohouse plants when they want to be dor-mant and burn their roots,” says Druse.

If you do use a lot of potting soil, con-sider making your own—it affords youthe option of tweaking the recipe for spe-cific plants—more or less acidic, more orless water retentive, etc. Local sources ofsand and municipal composting sites canprovide those ingredients inexpensively.You can also make high-quality compostin your own backyard—the ultimatelocal ingredient.

“My general medium is coir and per-lite—only,” says Druse. “Sometimes I usecompost as well for outdoor containers.

Depending on the drainage requirements,I use a ratio of one to three to one to fiveperlite to coir—and I try to use finelychopped coir that is neither too stringy nor‘coir dust’, which it is sometimes sold as.”(For additional potting mix recipes andrecommendations from experts around thecountry, see a web special linked to this ar-ticle on the AHS website, www.ahs.org.)

Another standard potting mix recipethat I like to use for outdoor containersis equal parts garden loam, coarse sand,and good quality compost. It’s a heavymix, so it’s not for large pots that youplan to move around, but it retains mois-ture well, and the compost provides thenutrients my plants need. Furthermore,at least two-thirds of the ingredients onlyhave to travel a few yards in my wheel-barrow to reach their destination. �

PASTEURIZING SOILIf you want to use soil in your pottingmix, it should be pasteurized to kill dis-eases, weeds,and insects, par-ticularly if youare using it forindoor plants orstarting seeds orcuttings. The ob-ject is to heatthe soil to 180degrees and maintain that temperaturefor 30 minutes. You can do this in yourkitchen by following the steps below:

■ Spread slightly moistened soil in apan, no more than four inches deep. ■ Cover the pan with aluminum foil.Place the pan of soil and an oven ther-mometer in the oven; set the temper-ature to 250 degrees.■ When the thermometer indicatesthe temperature has reached 180 de-grees, reduce the oven temperature to180 degrees and set your timer for 30minutes. ■ After 30 minutes, remove the soilfrom the oven. Allow it to cool thor-oughly before using it for planting.

I MUST BE ONE of the few plant lovers who hadn’t read anyof Ken Druse’s 10 other highly acclaimed books before discov-

ering his most recent offering,Planthropology. The advantage ofmy ignorance was that I experi-enced this book as innocently aswhen, as a new gardener nearlytwo decades ago, I discoveredplants like the marvelous sevenson flower (Heptacodium mico-nioides)—one of my first exoticpurchases that is still thriving inmy overgrown New Jersey garden.

Whether you, too, are new to Druse or an established fan, Plan-thropology is sure to engage you as it did me.

In this ambitious and satisfying book (an excerpt of whichappeared in the November/December 2008 issue of TheAmerican Gardener), Druse takes readers deep into the mys-teries of the plant kingdom, revealing little-known botanicalfacts as well as esoteric tidbits that will amaze and educateeven the most experienced gardener or horticulturist. Whoknew that Pythagoras invented vegetarianism or that figs haveflowers inside their fruit? The word “planthropology” is Druse’s own creation,coined to describe the study of plants and their histories.While the word may not ultimately make it into the perma-nent lexicon of gardening (though, personally, I hope it does),it is an apt reflection of the author’s genuine passion, knowl-edge, and respect for his subject.

With this book, Druse expands our understanding of howto take care of the plants we grow, and broadens our apprecia-tion for the way our plants in turn take care of us. “When everyperson learns more about plants,” writes Druse, “they will dis-cover what we gardeners already know—there are miracles allaround us. But the precious living things in our care are notonly fascinating, they are necessary to all life on earth.”

Haveyou heard of the ecological organizationInternational Canopy Network thatbegan with treetop studies by a talented,tree-climbing biologist? If not, then youhave now been exposed to a tiny bit ofNalini Nadkarni’s work.

Between Earth and Sky’s title evolvedfrom Nadkarni’s childhood experience

of seeing the giant National Christmas Tree in Washington,D.C., and thinking of it as a connection between the earth andthe sky, and from climbing high into the maples in her parents’yard. In this book, she brings to life myriad examples of bio-logical events, such as the destruction of the oldest living tree,a Nevada bristlecone pine dubbed Prometheus, by a researchertrying to establish its age. The tree’s name, from Greek mythol-ogy, means “forethought,” which is ironic, given that none wasevident before the tree was cut down, but Nadkarni places suchevents into sympathetic, meaningful historic context.

Nadkarni’s well-researched book is packed with interesting in-formation woven together from disparate sources in a well-orga-nized way. For example, she flows seamlessly through anadaptation of Maslow’s Hierarchy to baby blocks, poikilohydricfoliage, and Deuteronomy. She reviews the importance of theearth’s radioactive strontium layer, formed in 1954, to den-drochronology (the science of using tree rings as a way to date his-toric events) in a way that a lay person can comprehend. Each pagereinforces the importance of trees in our lives and to our planet.

If you open this book to a random chapter and read it, you willcome away more enlightened. I recommend, however, starting atthe beginning. The book is a multi-course banquet of informa-tion, and it is best digested in the order it is presented.

THE RELEASE OF these two enormously important works inthe same year offers a unique snapshot of the “State of the Or-

chid” at this point in time. The snap-shot aspect of the books is significantbecause, as noted in The Marie SelbyBotanical Gardens Illustrated Dictio-nary of Orchid Genera (IDOG), orchidtaxonomy is “presently unstable.” Inother words, five or 10 years from now,the names used for the plants in thesevolumes may be rather different.

IDOG is from America’s preeminentcenter of orchidology, the Marie SelbyBotanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida,while the New Encyclopedia of Orchids(NEO) is a product of the British orchidestablishment, which Isobyl la Croixrepresents admirably. Both books fea-ture wonderful illustrations and pho-tographs and superbly written text.However, there are differences in thetwo books that can help the casual or-chidist to decide which he or she needs,if acquiring both is not an option.

IDOG is precisely as advertised: an illustrated dictionary oforchid genera. It lists all orchid generic names, past and present,with the most current status along with an illustration of a rep-resentative species and a brief description of the genus as a whole.No species, no hybrids, no cultural information. As a basic ref-erence—one that would enable the seeker to discover the mostcurrent genus name—it is certainly without modern peer.

On the other hand, NEO is an encyclopedic treatment of 1,500orchid species currently in cultivation. Its introductory sectioncovers general orchidology (i.e., what is an orchid, how did theyevolve, where do they grow) and has cultural information that isfar more useful than is typical of most British orchid books, whichtend to be parochial in approach. Illustrations are larger and showmore of the flower habit than those in IDOG.

If you are looking for the most exhaustive contemporary list-ing of orchid genera, I recommend the dictionary. For informa-tion about culture, habitat, and particular species, theencyclopedia is the better choice. However, both of these volumesdeserve to be part of any serious horticultural library. �

Missouri Botanical Garden’s 150th AnniversaryTHIS YEAR marks the 150th anniversary of the oldest botanical garden in the Unit-ed States still operating—the Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG), founded in 1859.Throughout the year, MBG will be celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary withspecial events and displays tohonor and remember its founder,Henry Shaw. Excerpts fromShaw’s travel journals will be reg-ularly posted on MBG’s websiteto provide a glimpse backwards intime, and into the trips that in-spired Shaw to give St. Louis agarden that compared with thegreat formal botanical gardens ofEurope.

The past echoes again throughone of the highlights of the an-niversary commemoration—acustom-designed floral clock, 20feet in diameter, intended to re-capture the grandeur of a floralclock displayed in St. Louis at the1904 World’s Fair. The floral clock will be open for viewing beginning after the plant-ing in April, and will be fully grown by the beginning of May. It will showcase “sea-sonal flowers of varying colors and textures, moving clock hands, and a workingcuckoo bird chirping every quarter hour,” and will be on display until October.

Among the other anniversary events will be the Green Living Expo, from May 1to October 31, where visitors can “peruse select booths showcasing goods, services,and information with an environmental edge.”

A relative of daphnes, paperbush(USDA Zones 8–10, AHS Zones 10–8) de-velops multiple stout stems that arise fromits base. (Specimens trained as single-stemmed topiaries, like the one shownhere, are sometimes available.) Over time,it can reach six feet tall with an equalspread. The straplike leaves are six to eightinches long, providing a tropical effect.

Toward the end of summer, flower budsform for the following spring. These hangat the branch tips, creating a striking, silkywhite display in winter. In late March toearly April, the buds open to reveal clustersof sweetly fragrant, tubular, yellow flowers.The blooms fill a void between the witchhazels (Hamamelis spp.) and winter hazels(Corylopsis spp.)—which flower ahead ofedgeworthia—and flowering cherries(Prunus spp.) and magnolias, whichbloom slightly after.

Although I have grown edgeworthiain part shade here at the Scott Arboretumin Pennsylvania, it requires nearly fullsun to develop its best form. Because it isnot particularly drought tolerant, sup-plemental watering may be necessaryduring prolonged dry spells.

ONE SPECIES OR TWO?There is significant confusion amongbotanists regarding edgeworthia nomen-

clature: Some distinguish two or morespecies, others a single species with vari-ants. Summing up the current under-standing, plant explorer Dan Hinkleysays, “No one seems to know what speciesthey have and few seem to know if morethan one species actually exists.”

References that distinguish betweenspecies consider Edgeworthia papyrifera lessrobust than E. chrysantha and morediminutive. Many sources suggest that nei-ther species is hardy north of USDA Zone8. At the Scott Arboretum (USDA Zone6b/7a), we have found, however, that eventhough flower buds are set in the fall andexposed to the rigors of winter, edgewor-thia makes a fine early-flowering shrub for

the Philadelphia area, as it does through-out the southeastern United States, Cali-fornia, and the Pacific Northwest.

Some catalogs and references also list aselection of E. papyrifera called ‘Red Drag-on’, which I have coveted for years. I firstencountered this selection growing at theworld-renowned Eisenhut Nursery nearTicino, Switzerland. Like E. chrysantha, ithas early spring flowers, but these are a vi-brant reddish orange! ‘Red Dragon’ is saidto be less hardy than the species, but givenmy experience with supposedly tenderplants at the Scott Arboretum, experimen-tation with it is warranted.

SUITED TO SMALL SPACESEdgeworthias are appealing in small gar-dens. Mass them to maximize their effect;small plants can become well-formedshrubs in just a few years. To more easilyappreciate their early spring fragrance,plant them close to entryways. �

Edgeworthia chrysantha: Fragrant Flowers for Early Spring

State Fairgrounds in Raleigh,

North Carolina, in 1993 during a

tour of the gardens and collec-

tions. It was only late March and

this broadly rounded, deciduous

shrub—commonly known as pa-

perbush or edgeworthia—made

quite an impression on me be-

cause it was in full flower.

Edgeworthia’s fragrant yellow flowers appear in early spring well in advance of its leaves.
