Chances are you use some form of mathematics during your daily life. This week we are exploring therole of maths in many of the processes that determine what happens in our world like the weather,
interactions between people, the environment and the society in which we live.
FRACTIONSONE half, one quarter, onethird, what are they? They’refractions. A fraction describesa part of a whole when thewhole is cut into equal parts.Fractions can also be parts ofa group.There are different ways ofwriting a fraction. For ex-ample, two fifths of an objectcan be written as
■ a common fraction 2/5■ a decimal 0.4■ a percentage40%.In a com-mon frac-tion thereis thedenom-inator – thebottomnumberwhich givesthe number ofparts in the whole– and the numerator – the topnumber that tells how manyparts in the fraction.There are three differenttypes of fractions:Proper Fractions where thenumerator is smaller than thedenominator eg 7/8Improper Fractions wherethe nominator is greater orequal to the denominator 9/4Mixed Fractions have awhole number plus a fraction3 2/3The horizontal line whichappears between the numer-ator and denominator is calleda vinculum.

FIND a fraction – look throughthe newspaper and circleexamples of where numbersappear as fractions. Rememberthey may be written as adecimal, a percentage orcommon fraction.

◗ The rate of inflation.◗ The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).◗ The nation’s unemployment rate.◗ The taxes the government imposes.

THE STATSWHAT’S AVERAGE?THERE are many “averages” in statisticsbut the three most common, the ones youare most likely to encounter and use arethe MEAN, MEDIAN and MODE.The MEAN is the average used, where you
add up all the values in a set of numbers andthen divide the sum by the number of values in theset.The MEDIAN is the middle value in the list of numbers. To
find the median, the numbers are listed in numerical order, soyou may have to rewrite your list first.The MODE is the value that occurs most often. If no number
is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.The RANGE is just the difference between the largest and
smallest values.ExampleThe scores made by each batter in a cricket team are record-
