Mulvey looked at how the audience views

women who are presented in the media. She

believed that women are there to be seen, and

viewed as sexual objects by the use of the

camera.

She focused on:

How men look at women from images

How women look at themselves from images

How women look at other women from

images. (Sexual objects, or unrealistic).

Page 3: The male gaze theory

Emphasises the curves of a woman's body.

Refers to women as objects instead of

people.

Women are displayed how men think women

should be perceived.

Females viewers watch the content through

the eyes of men.

Women are sexualised and viewed based on

sexual desire and how they look.

Page 4: The male gaze theory

Describes how the audience or viewer is put

into perspective of a heterosexual male. For

example the camera will make the woman

central. The women are usually the objects

rather than the possessors.

The camera will use movements that perceive

women in an idealistic view.

A man in the video will emerge as a dominant

power. Mulvey also stated that the female gaze

is the same as the male gaze because women

look at themselves through the eyes of a man.

Calvin Harris ft John Newman-Blame

The spotlight in on the woman who is lying on Johns bed.

She is in her underwear and in the center of the bed.

However you can’t see her face therefore showing her as more of

an object rather than a person.

The lighting used one the women emphasises the woman’s figure.

Female viewers will watch this video through the eyes of a man,

most probably wanting to look like her.

Lily Wood ft Robin Schulz- Prayer in c.

This also supports the theory, but in a more subtle way.

However, there is a close up following one of the women walking

but it is focused on her bum.

The women in the video are also wearing less clothing such as

crop tops and short shorts.

Sam Smith- I’m not the only one

This video does support Mulvey’s theory however it is discrete.

But at moments you see the man as the dominant character in

the narrative.

Also when he is shown cheating you cannot see the woman's

face and she also has no clothes covering her back. Therefore

showing her as a sexual object.

Taylor Swift- Shake it off

This video still supports Mulvey’s theory.

Although it is hard to notice, the consumes picked for her still

accentuate the curves of her body in order to show off her

figure, and this is for the male viewers purpose.
