DESCRIPTION

Creating a new dvd package from one of the Criterion Collection's top cult classics. I decided to choose one out of six that was provided for this project and The Man Who Fell To Earth was the winner. The other five were Seven Samuri, Breathless, My Own Private Idaho, Down by Law, and 3 Women. We were not able to use any photographs from the film. So we were to bring in elements of the movie in a different manner by creating hand made vectors or any other form.

REPRESENTING A STORY

Out of the seven cult classic !lms, I chose the !lm featuring David Bowie called !e Man Who Fell To Earth. A !lm by Nicolas Roeg and based on a novel by Walter Tevis. "e movie itself is a science !ction in an art form from the 1970s. It’s about a story of an alien who comes to earth for a res-cue mission to launch a ship to the home planet with water, but gets caught in a twisting end.

Nicolas  Roeg’s  Film

The  Man  Who  Fell  to  Earth is a daring exploration of science fiction as an art form. The story of an alien on an elaborate rescue mission provides the launching pad for Nicolas Roeg’s visual tour de force, a formally adventurous examination of alienation in contemporary life. Rock legend David Bowie, in his acting debut, completely embodies the title role, while Candy Clark, Buck Henry, and Rip Torn turn in pitch-‐perfect supporting performances. The film’s hallucinatory vision was obscured in the American theatrical release, which deleted nearly twenty minutes of crucial scenes and details. The Criterion Collection is proud to present Roeg’s full uncut version, in this exclusive new director-‐approved high-‐definition widescreen transfer.

“We'd have probably done the same to you, if you'd come 'round our place.”

-Thomas Jerome Newton

“The film is a more poignant (and infinitely bleaker) portrait of extraterrestrial home-

sickness than ‘E.T.’”

The Man Who Fell to Earth is  a  daring  exploration  of  science  fiction  as  an  art  form.  The  story  of  an  alien  on  an

elaborate   rescue   mission   provides   the   launching   pad   for   Nicolas   Roeg’s   visual   tour   de   force,   a   formally

adventurous  examination  of  alienation   in  contemporary   life.  Rock   legend  David  Bowie,   in  his  acting  debut,

completely  embodies  the  title  role,  while  Candy  Clark,  Buck  Henry,  and  Rip  Torn  turn  in  pitch-perfect  support-

ing   performances.   The   film’s   hallucinatory   vision   was   obscured   in   the   American   theatrical   release,   which

deleted  nearly  twenty  minutes  of  crucial  scenes  and  details.  The  Criterion  Collection  is  proud  to  present  Roeg’s

full  uncut  version,  in  this  exclusive  new  director-approved  high-definition  widescreen  transfer. The Man W

A Film By Nicolas Roeg

“Bowie, slender, elegant, remote, evokes this alien so successfully that one could say, without irony, this was a role he was born to play.”
