I have a few important items to share with you this month. First, several months back, I shared with you the fact that our federal government is making changes to the rules that govern skilled nursing facilities such as ours. With these changes, there are some additional required postings we must have up for our residents and families. Over the next few weeks you will see the area outside of the care conference room being transformed into the “Resident Information Center.” In this area, you will be able to find important contact information as well as helpful resources such as a guidebook on Advanced Directives. We see this area really evolving in to the “go to” place for valuable information. This area will include not only the required notices, but also facility specific information that would be helpful. Please let us know what type of information would be helpful to you to have there. The other item I need to bring to everyone’s attention is regarding a large maintenance project that will be taking place the beginning of July. We are going to be replacing our chiller that currently sits on the roof. This is going to involve some large equipment being around the back side of the building. Here we are already the year is half gone I have a few important items to share with you this month

First several months back I shared with you the fact that our federal government is making changes to the rules that

govern skilled nursing facilities such as ours With these changes there are some additional required postings we must

have up for our residents and families Over the next few weeks you will see the area outside of the care conference

room being transformed into the ldquoResident Information Centerrdquo In this area you will be able to find important contact

information as well as helpful resources such as a guidebook on Advanced Directives We see this area really evolving in

to the ldquogo tordquo place for valuable information This area will include not only the required notices but also facility

specific information that would be helpful Please let us know what type of information would be helpful to you to have

there

The other item I need to bring to everyonersquos attention is regarding a large maintenance project that will be taking place

the beginning of July We are going to be replacing our chiller that currently sits on the roof This is going to involve

some large equipment being around the back side of the building Doors you might be used to coming in and out of

might not be available during this time Our intention is to have the rehab entrance available always Please be safe and

do not enter areas that are marked off by tape or rope Thank you in advance for your patience as we work to make the

needed improvements to our building

Join us on the 4th This year we would like to invite families to join us as we enjoy the annual Bettendorf 4th of July Parade with our residents from the convenience of our own property Contact Chris or Misty in Activities if you would like to make plans to watch the parade with your resident loved one Staff will be assisting with transportation as needed tofrom the designated parade viewing area on our property

Independence Day July 4th+

Independence Day is a day Americans hold dear The signing of the American colonies from the rule of England The signers of the Declaration gave their all when they signed the document The Preamble of the Declaration states ldquoWe hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life Liberty and the pursuit of Happinessrdquo A few interesting historical trivia facts related to the Declaration

The first printings of the Declaration of Independence were done by John Dunlap who made an estimated 200 copies They are called the Dunlap Broadsides There are only 24 known copies left today two of which are in the Library of Congress

One of the Dunlap Broadsides was found in 1989 and sold in 2000 for 8 million dollars There were 56 signers from all different backgrounds including lawyers merchants farmers

plantation owners physicians scientists and a minister The signers made a promise to ldquomutually pledge to each other our Lives our Fortunes and our

sacred Honorrdquo Nine of the signers paid with their lives and 17 of the signers lost their homes money and property Visit wwwdarorgarchivessigners-declaration-independence the web site of the Daughters of the Revolution to see pictures and information about each of the 56 signers

HISTORICAL BRIEF ON THE MANSION The Bettendorf Mansion was built in 1909 and 1910 The elaborate Spanish-Moorish

style home was built on 33 acres at a cost of $150000 Unfortunately Mr William Bettendorf never enjoyed his beautiful home He died unexpectedly in 1910 before he was able to move in His widow and her son by a previous marriage Oscar Staby moved into the house but found the house and grounds to be too much to manage

The Bettendorf Mansion was vacant for several years until 1925 when the Grand Lodge of Masons in Iowa purchased the mansion contents and grounds for $50000 They immediately built on an adjoining building as a ldquohospitalrdquo for Master Masons their wives and widows The ldquohospitalrdquo opened in 1927 as ldquoMasonic Sanitariumrdquo and operated under that name until 1970 when the name changed to ldquoIowa Masonic Nursing Homerdquo In 1999 the name was changed again this time to the current name of ldquoIowa Masonic Health Facilitiesrdquo Masonic affiliation is NO longer required The Bettendorf Mansion which currently houses the business offices of the facility was left practically intact and remains as such today

In 1979 a new wing was added to the northwest side of the nursing facility In 1994 a new community center reception area and parking lot were added In 2002 an existing maintenance building was torn down and replaced by a new maintenance building At that time construction also began on an 18 bed ldquoAnn Ruge Special Care Unitrdquo which opened in 2003

In 1987-1988 Masonic Village an independent living retirement community consisting of forty independent living condominium-style villas was constructed on the southern portion of the property

Iowa Masonic Health Facilities is a non-profit health center offering on-site intermediate and skilled nursing services It remains under the ownership and jurisdiction of the Masonic organization and is governed by five appointed board members

HISTORICAL BRIEF ON THE MANSION The Bettendorf Mansion was built in 1909 and 1910 The elaborate Spanish-Moorish

style home was built on 33 acres at a cost of $150000 Unfortunately Mr William Bettendorf never enjoyed his beautiful home He died unexpectedly in 1910 before he was able to move in His widow and her son by a previous marriage Oscar Staby moved into the house but found the house and grounds to be too much to manage

The Bettendorf Mansion was vacant for several years until 1925 when the Grand Lodge of Masons in Iowa purchased the mansion contents and grounds for $50000 They immediately built on an adjoining building as a ldquohospitalrdquo for Master Masons their wives and widows The ldquohospitalrdquo opened in 1927 as ldquoMasonic Sanitariumrdquo and operated under that name until 1970 when the name changed to ldquoIowa Masonic Nursing Homerdquo In 1999 the name was changed again this time to the current name of ldquoIowa Masonic Health Facilitiesrdquo Masonic affiliation is NO longer required The Bettendorf Mansion which currently houses the business offices of the facility was left practically intact and remains as such today

In 1979 a new wing was added to the northwest side of the nursing facility In 1994 a new community center reception area and parking lot were added In 2002 an existing maintenance building was torn down and replaced by a new maintenance building At that time construction also began on an 18 bed ldquoAnn Ruge Special Care Unitrdquo which opened in 2003

In 1987-1988 Masonic Village an independent living retirement community consisting of forty independent living condominium-style villas was constructed on the southern portion of the property

Iowa Masonic Health Facilities is a non-profit health center offering on-site intermediate and skilled nursing services It remains under the ownership and jurisdiction of the Masonic organization and is governed by five appointed board members
