MEET GOVERNOR SARA SWEETEN
Hello New England Key Clubbers! My name is Sara Sweeten and I am proud to serve as your 2012-2013 District Governor. It is such an honor to be given this opportunity. I am cur-rently a junior at Sturgis Charter Public School East in Hyannis, MA. I’ve been a member of Key Club since my freshman year where I’ve held the positions of club editor, club presi-dent, Division 20 Lt. Governor, and District Kiwanis Family Relations committee chair. Becoming involved in Key Club has been one of the most rewarding parts of my high school experience. It’s all due to the amaz-ing service work I’ve been able to do, the inspirational people I’ve had the chance to meet, and the adventures I’ve had traveling across New England.
This year as governor, one of my goals is to work closely with lieutenant governors to ensure close communication between clubs and the New England District. It is important for the club offi cers (and all general mem-bers) to become familiar and friendly with their LTG and vice versa. Effi cient communi-cation is one of the most important aspects of success. Let’s strive for it within our District, and I know we will have a great year of productive community service! I’d also like to work to increase membership within clubs as well as retain our current members. Utilization of Key Club International resources - such as publicity tools – can be utilized so students want to join Key Club. But remember, nothing is better than your own example and enthusi-asm to draw others to our great organization!
I look forward to meeting many of you throughout the year and would also like to take this opportunity to say, whether you’re an LTG, club offi cer or general member, that I am here to help in whatever way I can. Hope to see lots of you at International Con-vention in Orlando!
Please feel free to contact me at any time.

The May YanKey - Page Five
Hello New England District! My name is Emily Mathieu, and I was elected your 2012 – 2013 District Treasurer. I am currently a sophomore at Kennett High School in Conway, NH (Division 5A). I have worked to create this bond with New England, and I hope to strengthen it this upcoming year!I have many goals this year that I wish to accomplish. A few of them include pro-moting the Early Bird Dues Award, focusing on clubs that are struggling to pay their dues (or are on suspension), creating a list of clubs that are past deadlines and contacting their LTG to find a way to help the club, and most importantly, I want to increase communication about next year’s DeCON. I want to see more clubs with paid dues to be able to give more mem-bers the opportunity to learn what Key Club is about. What is OUR history? What is OUR motto? What do WE stand for? I can’t wait for this upcoming year! Let’s have a memorable time. Let’s be a part of something so much bigger than just ourselves!Emily MathieuNew England District Treasurer
Hello Everyone,
This year’s district convention was a blast, and I am very excited and honored to serve as your New England District Secretary. I am currently a junior at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School.
I joined key club my freshman year. For the past year I had the privilege of serving as the lieuten-ant governor of districts 14-15. I am very excited to serve as your district secretary. Some of my goals for the upcoming year are to improve upon the system of sending secretary reports. The Google sites page will serve as an easier way for secretaries to fill out and send the re-ports in on time. I hope to increase the number of clubs who send in their secretary reports. I look forward to working with everyone this com-ing year.
Thank you,
Emily MoranNew England District Secretary
Hey New England Key Clubbers,I am Miranda Roberts, the 2012-2013 New England District Bulletin Editor. I am really excited to start working with this year’s NED Board of Trustees and my fellow executive board mem-bers.I am currently a sophomore at Hermon High School in Hermon, Maine. Along with Key Club, I volunteer at my local hospital as a student volunteer manager. I currently have over 500 hours of community service, and I plan on having at least 1000 before I graduate. As Bulletin Editor, my goals for this year are to continue the online usage publication of the YanKey and to create longer editions of the YanKey. Also, I hope to educate club editors on their importance and the importance of the newsletters they produce. I am very excited to be serving on the New England District Board this year as your Bulletin Editor. I am looking forward to meeting everyone soon!Thank you!Miranda RobertsNew England District Bulletin Editor

Service is the core of Key Club International. We work annually with both our Inter-national partners –March of Dimes, Children’s Miracle Network and UNICEF – as well as our District projects – Children of Peace International (COPI) Camp Sunshine, and Kiwanis Pediat-ric Trauma Institute (KPTI) – to fulfill our duties as Key Clubbers. While International and District projects hold a great importance, local service also cannot be forgotten. Each time you recite the Key Club International pledge, you vow to build your “home, school and commu-nity”. A project that the Sturgis East Key Club has completed in the community recently is known as “Survivor Kits”. Sturgis East club member, Casey Cunningham suggested the club get involved with this organization. The club backed this involvement 100% because it acted locally and was hands on. The aim was simple, to create as many survivor kits as possible. Survivor Kits provide basic necessities for domestically abused survivors in the hospital. They consist of hygiene products, as well as some items to make the survivors feel safer and more at home after such a tragic incident. The project was extremely successful, with the help of Sturgis East Key Club; they were able to get the entire school involved. The Sturgis East Key Club and the Sturgis East School as a whole, were able to create over 60 of these kits which were distributed throughout our community A project such as this one is valuable for many reasons, but especially because it is lo-cal and hands on. Fundraising is great, but doing hands on projects is so beneficial for vol-unteers to visually see the impact that they’ve had. Reach out into your community. If you don’t know how to find local projects, first step is word of mouth. Ask parents, teachers, and coaches if they’re involved in any service organizations. Secondly, it’s as simple as opening a search tool on the internet and looking up service opportunities in your area.

Haverhill Key Club gets down with YUDA Bands
Haverhill High’s Key Club, in Division 12-13, recently finished the YUDA Bands service project. Many students, siblings, and even teachers were anxious to get one or two of these beautifully handmade bands! These bracelets are made out of leather, string, and coconut shell. Bright young kids and their families in third world countries come together and make these bracelets. These bracelets are then shipped out to clubs that would then sell them. In exchange for bands, these children get an education. These children are eager to learn and have very big dreams. Without the help of US high schools, their goals of going to school would not be possible. These bands are sold for $7 each and for every 175 bands sold, a child of the club’s choice is sponsored to go to school for one year. On average, most high schools with rough-ly 1,100 students sell enough bands to sponsor 2-3 children to go to school. Haverhill High’s Key Club sold enough bands to sponsor 2 children to go to school.

Within a couple of weeks after district convention, the newly elected Lieuten-ant Governors gathered in Portsmouth, NH for a fun filled weekend of training! This weekend consisted of building new friendships, pointing out various problems found in clubs/divisions, and of course, being trained to become a great Lieutenant Governor! The Lieutenant Governors were joined by the lovely executive board and also Mrs. Greene, Mrs. Browne, and Mr. Whitney. Mrs. Greene walked us through everything that we needed to know. She handed out all of the forms that we will need for the year. She was very helpful and I’m very grateful for attending the trainer. Mrs. Browne gave us a wonderful experience on how Robert’s Rules worked with many types of snacks such as M&M’s, Goldfish, Crai-sins, macaroni and cheese, Chex Mix, and more. It took a while to get through all of the snacks but we eventually got our trail mix going and we had a lot of fun during this. Overall, it was a great trainer. We learned about monthly reports, secretary reports, directories, dues, meeting dates, and other information that would be essential for a Lieutenant Governor to run things smoothly. Keenan Phillips, the Lieutenant Governor of Division 8, stated, “At the trainer, I learned that team work is crucial even at the district level.” It was a great to meet the other Lieutenant Governors and we all had a great time!
