Statistics/RulesStatistics/Rules Of Interest

Determining Batting AverageA player’s batting average is determined by taking the player’s total num-ber of hits and dividing it by total at bats.

Determining Earned Run AverageA player’s earned run average is determined by multiplying the total num-ber of earned runs by nine, then divided that number by the number of innings pitched.

Determining Fielding PercentageA player’s fielding percentage is determined by dividing a player’s total number of putouts and assists by the sum of his chances.

Determining On-Base PercentageA player’s on-base percentage is determined by dividing the number of times a batter reaches base (not including by error) by his number of plate appearances.

Determining Range FactorA player’s defensive range factor is determined by adding his putouts plus assists and then dividing by his number of games played.

Determining Slugging PercentageA player’s slugging percentage is determined by taking the player’s total number of bases and dividing by his at bats.

Determining Total BasesA player’s total bases is determined by adding together singles, doubles, triples and home runs. Award one point for every single, two points for ev-ery double, three points for every triple and four points for every home run. Note, total bases are used to help determine slugging percentage.

Determining WHIP (Walks Plus Hits Per Innings Pitched)A pitcher’s number of walks and hits per inning is determined by adding the number of hits and walks allowed by the pitcher and dividing by his number of innings pitched.

Determining Winning PercentageA pitcher’s winning percentage is determined by taking the number of victories and dividing by the pitcher’s number of appearances.

Earned Runs RuleAn earned run is a run for which the pitcher is held accountable. In deter-mining earned runs, the inning should be reconstructed without the errors and passed balls, and the benefit of the doubt should always be given to the pitcher in determining which bases would have been reached with errorless play.

Hitting Streak DefinitionA player who hits safely in two or more games is considered to be on a hitting streak.

1. A consecutive hitting streak shall not be terminated if the plate ap-pearance results in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly shall terminate the streak.2. A consecutive-games hitting streak shall not be terminated if all the player’s plate appearances (one or more) result in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or sacrifice bunt. The streak shall ter-minate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit.3. A consecutive-games playing streak shall be extended if the player plays one-half inning on defense, or if he completes a time at bat by reaching base or being put out. A pinch-running appearance only shall not extend the streak. If a player is ejected from a game by an umpire before he can comply with the requirements of this rule, his streak shall continue.

Save RequirementsA pitcher can earn a save by completing ALL three of the following items:

1. Finishes the game won by his team.2. Does not receive the win.3. Meets one of the following three items:

1. Enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches at least one inning.2. Enters the game with the tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck.3. Pitches effectively for at least three innings.

Rule Changes in 2009Notable Rules insitituted or amended by the NCAA prior to the season

• Section 1: It is required that base coaches wear a helmet. Play will not continue until compliance with this rule is met. It is recommended that the helmet meet NOCSAE \ standards.

• Section 3: The coaches’ boxes shall be 20 feet by 5 feet and 15 feet from the foul line as shown in the diagram on page 15. At the time of the pitch, the base coach shall remain within the confines of the coaches’ box with both feet. Oregon State Beaver Baseball Camp is designed to provide the best possible baseball instruction for players from age 8 to 18 of all abilities.

Emphasis at the camp is placed upon improving each individual’s skills and knowl-edge of baseball.

Each camper will receive specific instruction on how to play the game and how to improve himself or herself both on and off the field. Skills and techniques will be improved through individual and small group instruction, drills, and game experi-ence. Instruction will cover all aspects of baseball.

Instructors include OSU head coach Pat Casey and assistants Marty Lees, Pat Bailey and Nate Yeskie who helped OSU become the first program to win back-to-back national championships in a decade. The Beavers won national titles in 2006 and 2007 and made an appearance at the College World Series in 2005. The staff also includes outstanding coaches from the junior college and high school ranks.

FACILITIES: Beaver Baseball Camps will be held in Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on the Oregon State University campus as well as the OSU Softball Field, Crystal Lake Parks, and the fields at West Albany High School as well as Corvallis High School. Buses will take campers back and fourth from Crystal Lake, West Albany HS, and Corvallis HS.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM: Our program instructs in all positions and game situations. We teach the proper techniques of hitting, pitching, catching, infield, outfield, base running and team defense. All areas of the game will be covered. Students will receive individual instruction on the correct techniques of the game with emphasis given to each camper’s primary areas of interest. Instruction is ad-justed for age and ability levels and student safety is stressed at all times.

Games are supervised by our coaches who teach and review proper play tech-niques. Games are played each day and are a great opportunity for students to incorporate the techniques they have been taught to improve their confidence in their abilities.
